    Some thing else to consider.
Easy gold is mostly gone. There is still lots of great gold to be found, but you need to work for it.
If you are not prepared to walk lots of km up and down some steep country in all weather, not prepared to drive your car off road, get scratches and dents etc, and not prepared to spend a fair bit of money on good camping gear, fridges, solar power, 4x4 recovery gear , then gold prospecting might not be for you.
It's not like going fishing for a couple of hours.

SPOT ON mate. It takes hard work and PROSPECTING. Prospect a spot, if you find nothing then prospect another spot. You gotta be prepared to do the hard yakka.

Matt, thanks for another great insight to Metal, Relic and Gold detecting, the opinions go on and on about which is the best gold detector and it makes for healthy discussion, unfortunately we are human and emotions can run high. The key points you raise on detector selection are very important, if I lived in the WA goldfields, a 6000 (straight out of the box) would be my choice, I live in Victoria and find the 7000 does what I need it to do, but it has taken me 3 years to become at least somewhat comfortable in firstly understanding the soil and then understanding my detectors attitude. I come from a family of prospectors and still find it a challenge, whereby my siblings would get out of bed and stub their toe on a gold nugget (so I say)
