Scarlet turned way up, does it sound better with a cloudlifter just because the scarlet will be turned down?

Hi, are you using a mic booster like Cloud lifter with Rode podmic? Do you need it for better sound?

Thanks for the question. I don't use a booster for my reviews as I believe the majority of viewers start without one. I should probably include a comparison with and without a booster (thanks for the idea). The PodMic requires a considerable amount of gain, so it will depend on your preamp as to how much benefit a cloud lifter (or other booster ) will be (the 8i6 I used in this review has 56 dB of gain and has pretty clean preamps). If you notice noise / hiss when driving your preamp high for the PodMic, a booster may be a good choice, but keep in mind that with additional gain also comes increased pickup of background / room noise. If you like to work at a distance of more than 8 inches from the mic, a booster will also help with most preamps / interfaces.

That's kind of you to say. I keep working to improve my reviews and tutorials...will probably never get to a point I will be satisfied with, but if I can share my thoughts, provide some value, and help others out, I'm happy with that. Thanks again!

Thanks! So many choices in this price range...There is just about a mic for everyone's tone preference.

It does have great clarity. I think Rode designed this mic with those needing to have dialogue rise above background sound in mind (game streamers, etc.), but it sure has gained a broad following over two years.

No hate here but this is unoriginal! Blatant copy of the Podcastage format. Hey if you want to do reviews, why not do something more interesting and unique in your review instead of a copy of others?

Thanks for your suggestion. I do enjoy Bandrew's reviews, in particular for microphones that are out of reach or simply too specialized for most of us to own. Even though many reviews include a similar format / elements, I find it helpful to hear how microphones perform with different reviewer's voices using different gear - still not the same as hearing our own voice, but i believe it does provide some context. That said, I am always adding new tests and demonstrations to my reviews (like the processed demonstrations I provide) and have a few new additions planned for the near future that I at least have not yet seen in mic reviews... I believe my approach to headphone reviews (see ath-m40x, Razer Kraken) demonstrate my efforts to expand upon what reviews can be.

Hey that’s great to hear! I noted your processing section which is a nice thing to include, also agree about different voices on the microphones too. A couple thoughts that I note is the value of working distance with most microphones - tests greater than 18” away on a non shotgun type don’t bring a great deal of value, whereas tonal quality can change drastically between 1/2” and 10”. Although I like an 8” working distance some microphones sound substantially better at 3”. Good luck to you, maybe consider a tear down of the podmic, I can’t find a tool to disassemble it.

I'm with you on working distance vs tone...I think that is one of the reasons so many people don't get the sound they expect when they purchase a new mic and then sadly simply purchase more gear. This is also why (beyond the quality/performance) so many like the RE20 imo... Tear down of the PodMic, now that sounds like a demo to be partnered with iFixit!

Blatant copy, I think not. He does not throw the box. I really enjoy his reviews and his unique style.

I still chuckle when he throws the box...and the self critique on the quality of the throw is hilarious! I'm not sure about the shader filter when four feet away though lol (I save those for my OBS videos)
