Gotta say, my first two hand tapping song I heard was “Atlas Novus” by Scale the Summit; then I found Yvette Young. Chris Letchford and Yvette Young are my two main influences.
For Chris Letchford, my favorites from his band Scale the Summit are "The Levitated," "Atlas Novus," & "Soria Moria." I know there are a few others where two hand tapping is a prominent theme. I would not catagorize them as math rock, more of prog, but they have a very mellow and beutiful sound; with melodies being a strong narative for most songs. Love Scale the Summit one of my favorite bands. I would recommend their albums "The Collective," "The Migration," and the album "V"
I don't really have a lot of time to play and learning has been a real struggle for me for a long time, but your videos really help me bit by bit to piece things together. Thanks, Steve
I started doing the technique with a chord in the left hand and tapping with the right. I saw it in a tosin abasi video and it opened me up to a bunch of new stuff. I make a Couple of good songs using the technique. I play alone, so it's a good way to be able to play something that sounds complete.
That's awesome. I think it's my favorite tapping technique. Tosin is a super solid player. I don't think I'll ever to play that fast a precise no matter how much I practice.
That's because it's from the tab book Tim made for their first album :) that particular video is from another video I did on how to play like ttng, hence the analysis on the tab. I think you can buy the tab book from the ttng website, along with tabs for all their other albums too!
Dave Knudson of Minus The Bear was the reason I became interested in tapping, his chord tapping technique is amazing, also the reason I became interested in PRS and ended up owning one. I was later inspired by the tapping styles of Covet and Scale The Summit.
Let's Talk About Math Rock After I made this comment, I saw your video with your bassist friend who made a direct statement on that band. Lol I appreciate you guys!
This is so cool. I loved this. Never would have thought a channel like this existed. Loved the 5th technique you showed, because as soon as you mentioned open tunings I finally understood how I could compose like that. Really great examples and really stellar playing! As far as artists getting me into tapping, for sure American Football, TTNG, Night Verses, and some others I can't think of. I've definitely been trying to implement more tapping in my music and I'm loving it. It's just got such a cool sound to it.
i just decided to ditch my pick a couple of days ago, and now this pops up in muh recommendations! lovely timing, and nice video friendo. decided to use tapping to learn the intro to CAFO by AAL lol
Hey. Yeah, finger style with tapping is beastly. Try some different tuning with it if you haven't already. Check out bands such as TTNG and Covet if you haven't heard of them already.
Let's Talk About Math Rock yee, i’m well aware of Covet, and Yvette’s crazy tip tapping skills lol. as far as weird tunings go, first thing i may try is F-Bb-F-Bb-Eb-F-Bb-Eb.
I see, but I don't think you have to play like him on most records, like there are examples he gave of double tapping that I think matches your video. For example "Guitar Lesson: Tosin Abasi - Tapping with chords" or better example: "Guitar Lesson: Tosin Abasi on tapping" But if you have to play something from an album.... then yeah you'd have to become an alien first.
Hey! I've been following your channel for a while. In addition to playing Bass, I also play the Chapman Stick, one of the instruments build completely from the ground-up for tapping. I'd love to talk with you some time about traditional guitar-tapping vs. touch guitar-- find out what's similar, what's different. If that interests you, let me know!
Hey Jacob. Some cool stuff there. I tend to be rather busy these days so I haven't really got the time to chat. I'm happy to reply to comments or emails though :)
Just checked them out. Someone else also recommended them. Can't believe I hadn't hear of them till now, just goes to show what I can find by asking for your input. Thanks.
Hi Phil. It's a fretwrap. They are great for killing unwanted string ring and unwanted harmonics. If you want to play something cleanly and you aren't using open strings, then you'll want one of these. The are used mostly in the studio when trying to track parts as cleanly as possible.
Hi Steve, great lesson. I'm getting into tapping guitar skills, im still new to it n trying to get better at finding the right harmonies. Are all of those riffs in standard tuning. is there away to do those tapping riffs in standard (open tunings can take a while). Are there any cool songs i could learn in EADGBE? Also are there any tapping riff song lessons you could link? Awesome lesson as always, Thnx -Greg
Hey Greg. You'll be glad to know that every single on of these (apart from the very last one) are in standard tuning! It is perfectly possible to write tapping stuff in standard. What open tunings give you is the ability to combine hammer ons and pulls offs with open strings and add tapping to the mix you can create some cool stuff. I have a few tapping lessons, here's a play list of them: ua-cam.com/video/tMXRt9zWqIQ/v-deo.html Good luck!
Hi, I've had issues with getting my tapping to cut through the mix. I use a more driven tone somewhat like the new tiny moving parts guitar tone. Should I get a compressor?
Hello. That's a good question. There are a few things you could try. First you could try changing the eq of your guitar to cut through a mix, you could have this at all times or when just doing tapping sections. I'm talking a mid range boost, check out the jhs haunting mids pedal, boss ge7 or the earth Quakerdevices arrows. Another thing you can do to help with the signal is compression, I use an earthquaker devices the warden pedal, but so you said you're having trouble cutting through a mix I'd say the first suggestion will help more, but a good compressor can help make the volumes even and such.
Thanks. I've only had 2-3 listens of the whole thing. I'm digging the new drummer, some of the songs didn't stand out that much but I'm sure with a few more listens they'll grow on me. How about you?
Will do! You have said before, I think. Any video in particular? As for Covet. I'm digging the new drummer, some great songs but some of the songs didn't stand out that much. That being said I'm sure with a few more listens they'll grow on me, and I'm not a fan of the way the strandberg sounds, sounds rather muddy. How about you?
ua-cam.com/video/rnxZ_1tnCGg/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/elOxW3wbz7A/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/xCTRCG20Jb4/v-deo.html he's created lots of techniques, not really using them for math rock also lots of overlap with 8 string stuff like animals as leaders (thumping etc) dunno about the new covet, i guess it is kinda muddy but i dig the more atmospheric sound (comes from experimenting with a bunch of pedals from the look of it?) it's gonna be cool to see where they get to musically after more years/albums
If you want godlike tapping, listen to Uchu Conbini. I've watched this guy's videos for a while now and he's never covered Uchu Conbini (I don't blame him though, I dont think it's possible for anyone to play the crazy stuff Daijiro creates.)

Hello you lovelies. Hope you find this one useful! Master the math rock finger tapping technique here 👉 bit.ly/3zKIcTY
1:47 This is the first time I've ever felt included as a left handed guitar player lol
Haha! I try to think about everyone!
Birdhouse and Caution both by Tiny Moving Parts. Those two songs really got me to try to buckle down and learn how to tap.
Awesome. Dylan's tapping stuff is pretty catchy.
Birdhouse fucking SLAPS
Gotta say, my first two hand tapping song I heard was “Atlas Novus” by Scale the Summit; then I found Yvette Young. Chris Letchford and Yvette Young are my two main influences.
Anything by Chris that you'd recommend? Thanks.

That's awesome to hear! Thanks for watching.
After losing half of my left index finger I'm trying to recover some ability to play again. This is very helpful. Thank you!
Ouch! Keep it up you'll get better in no time. Thanks for watching.
Maybe my first math-tapping band: Jardín de la Croix, from my hometown Madrid. They're a must in case you don't know them.
Love that Gibson SG special! 2014 was a great year for Gibson SG's.
I started doing the technique with a chord in the left hand and tapping with the right. I saw it in a tosin abasi video and it opened me up to a bunch of new stuff. I make a Couple of good songs using the technique. I play alone, so it's a good way to be able to play something that sounds complete.

Let's Talk About Math Rock for sure man
Where'd you get the 26 Is Dancier Than 4 tab? It's crazy accurate!
That's because it's from the tab book Tim made for their first album :) that particular video is from another video I did on how to play like ttng, hence the analysis on the tab. I think you can buy the tab book from the ttng website, along with tabs for all their other albums too!
Just to be sure, you mean the Animals tab book (ttng.band/merch/animals-tab-book), right? Either way, thank you!
Nope. They used to have the first album too :(. Have a search online. Maybe somewhere someone still has it for sale.
Good to know. I'll get looking.
there is a good guitar pro tab for it on ultimate guitar
Wow. I’ve never heard of math rock, but this is rad!
I have constantly been returning for 4:08
How can I practice this. What are the tabs ?
That riff is for midnight :0
Isn't it that one tiny moving parts song. Good enough I think?
@@lonelysorrowknight nope, similar riff but not the same, this is from Steve's band, Mountains, the song is "Incandescent"
This channel is underrated. Keep up he work!
Thanks for saying that, Dan!
The content on this channel is always getting better! Thank for sharing so much of your lessons, ideas and knowledge
Cheers!
Let's Talk About Math Rock, you’re welcome! Keep up the entertaining inspiration ✌️
Dave Knudson of Minus The Bear was the reason I became interested in tapping, his chord tapping technique is amazing, also the reason I became interested in PRS and ended up owning one. I was later inspired by the tapping styles of Covet and Scale The Summit.
Awesome stuff. Minus the bear are wicked.
Yeah, I'm deeply saddened that they are embarking on their farewell tour in October. :'(
I forgot to mention, Tera Melos will be there.
Elephant Gym is my favorite! You should do a video on their bassist!
Yeah. They are great! I don't think my weedy fingers could tap like she does in a bass. Haha
Let's Talk About Math Rock After I made this comment, I saw your video with your bassist friend who made a direct statement on that band. Lol I appreciate you guys!
Haha. Awesome! You're welcome. Thanks for watching :)
Did you really think you could sneak Incandescent past me, Steve? That song is gorgeous.
Haha! Thanks.
Awesome ideas! Thank you!
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!

The song that got me into math rock was "Ride Or Die, Remember? by Look Mexico on their album Uniola" You should demo some of this stuff :)
I'll check that out. Thanks!
I would like to recommend "Atlas novus" by Scale the summit as a great double handed tapping song
Subbed, love instrumental math rock, thanks for the videos, they are inspiring! Peace, be safe

No problem^^
Do you have a playlist of some of your favorite math rock out there? I am always looking for new tunes and you seem like you know your stuff!
Hey Sam. Someone asked me this a few days ago. I will put one together soon. Just thinking about how to best do it. Thanks. :)
Interesting! I would have liked to see some Tosin Abasi examples.
I don't think my fingers can move that fast.
I see, but I don't think you have to play like him on most records, like there are examples he gave of double tapping that I think matches your video.

Yeah. She has some fun stuff to play.
You should keep up a Spotify playlist of all the songs you've used/played/recommended in your videos, if you don't already!
Hi. That's an awesome idea! Thanks for that.
Hi Steve, great lesson. I'm getting into tapping guitar skills, im still new to it n trying to get better at finding the right harmonies. Are all of those riffs in standard tuning. is there away to do those tapping riffs in standard (open tunings can take a while).

It's not really math rock but i think the band that would i best describe as the one that got me into tapping was joe satriani or van halen
Nice. I think one of the first tapping things I learned was a Joe Satriani exercise from a guitar magazine. Haha
Fingerpicking exercises pls
Sure thing. I was asked by another a few days ago. Will be working on one soon!
great video as always, very imformative !
Thank you!
What about Josh Martin's typing style? :D
Someone else already mentioned him. I hadn't heard of him till now. Great stuff :)
nice vid as usual m8
btw what's your verdict on covet's new record
Thanks. I've only had 2-3 listens of the whole thing. I'm digging the new drummer, some of the songs didn't stand out that much but I'm sure with a few more listens they'll grow on me. How about you?
What album is that next to twin galaxies?
Gulfer - What Gives (greenish blue one)
White one is Invilads
apologies if i dropped this on your other videos, but check out josh martin's tapping techniques
also, thoughts on the new covet?
How about you?

also lots of overlap with 8 string stuff like animals as leaders (thumping etc)
dunno about the new covet, i guess it is kinda muddy but i dig the more atmospheric sound (comes from experimenting with a bunch of pedals from the look of it?)
it's gonna be cool to see where they get to musically after more years/albums
oh yeah, i really like these diagrams for polyrhythms too ua-cam.com/video/FZiKp5Rz1a8/v-deo.html

Thank you!
If you want godlike tapping, listen to Uchu Conbini.
I've watched this guy's videos for a while now and he's never covered Uchu Conbini (I don't blame him though, I dont think it's possible for anyone to play the crazy stuff Daijiro creates.)
Yeah. That stuff blows my mind, and yes, I don't think I'd be able to play that. Haha. Must take some serious dedication and practice.
how come i don't see you mentioning uchu conbini :(
What's the song on 4:07?
