- I show you how to start an Erudite Magician on a new TLP server. The mage is one of the most powerful classes in Classic Everquest and this guide shows you why.

2023 this guide still helps newb mages thank you.
Glad it helped. The Mage is a nice class to play on a TLP .
wow watching this really hit me in the nostalgia. I loved playing my mage, till I started grouping with a necro friend. Then I had wished I would have created the necro. The necro could solo so many other areas that I couldn't.
Fun watching the video, brought back some great memories of the first MMO I ever played for so many late night hours.
Rolling my first mage on teek, thnx for the guide.
Glad I could help!
Mage is my main since early 2002. I started on a Paladin then grew to love being a Ranger before finding my true calling in EQ. It's a powerful class that can contribute in any situation and it's FUN 😋
Thank you so much for this guide. I only played one free month of EQ back in 2004 and moved on to other MMOs after. I just recently subbed to Daybreak with an Erudite Wizard in mind and this video is exactly what I was looking for.
Welcome back!
A mage spell guide would also be great. Love the vids.
I find being a DE caster is really great. The int factor is not that much in the grand scheme of things. But DE's can level to their teens right on the back yard unless they go for croc teams at 11ish ..or to kill those rock/dust things on lava storm next to Najera around 12 ish to 14. I made a DE necro ( should have done a Magician LOL) and I have not traveled really far at 23. Same for gnomes,.their backyard allows them to level up to teens just in one zone plus they are close ( relatively speaking ) to Unrest.
These are really great! Sorry if you already do this, but I thought it would be cool to do zone highlights. Like good camps for groups, for solo, for loot. EDIT: I see you have a couple of these but they are more of a follow along. Thank you for all your work!
That is a GREAT idea!
I loved the video, but what I loved even more was that /chatfontsize 5 .. For all my time, I didn't know that was a feature!
I learned about it last year too!
Thanks for the guide, made a mage High Elf and put 10 into str because I need to carry stuff to sell lol ....Still did not make much of a difference sill can kill yellows and still have mana to get a blue after if need to be. I'm stuck at level 20 trying to figure out where to hunt for good exp. Unrest yard is all grey and green already and inside groups are hard to find since one group can control all the inside of the house. One of the benefits of the High Elfs is the starting ara and the bandit camp in the middle are good EZ exp from level 6 to 12, no need to go to crush bone then is unrest to 20+ if you can find groups. The oasis is a great place from 8 to 20 also just killing crocs ...and orcs. Ohh and level 16 pets need to be acquired at OoT , but if you go to unrest you can definitely skip 16, 17, 18, fast and just get the pets past 16. Once 25+ I will go to mistmore.
Played 99-2004 with mage. Didnt think mage was all that great as a solo class. Couldnt solo yellow or red vs a necro who could. Then when hitting 60 and getting your epic, it was a game changer
If you play the mage at end game (level 120), it's always in the top 3 for DPS depending on the raid. Some of the last raid streams we did had the mages at the top so they just get stronger as time goes by :)
Thanks, this is the class I was waiting for!
you're welcome!
What about the High Elf?
I still like the ERU more because of the higher INT. HE is ok and they get better vision and better start location.
Can't speak for other servers but I do know on teek, the Earth Pet dies to things that the water pet brushes off. I'm at level 11 and this trend is so far maintained itself let the water pit is tanking the best
Thanks for explaining mitigation of the mighty. It really stinks for pet classes/charmers on raids. Let's see those pro strats for Kerra Isle. No one is gonna go there even in classic.
Yes, I really don't like MOtM. I remember trying Naggy with mages back when MOtM was on the test server and the mages have no way to lower the agro and they can't hit him all all.
Does INT really matter when you can get gear that can easily max out INT? Im sitting at 340 something INT at lvl 41 as a Necromancer
I know this is an old comment but I agree. It matters in the beginning but INT will be maxed rather quickly as expansions go on. For me this only makes three things actually matter.
1.) Looks
2.) Gnome Tinkering
3.) Dark Elf Hide
@Doctor Nachoz will you be playing on the new TLP in may? Have recently decided to give EQ a go since EQ Online Adventures the only EQ I've played and by far my all time favorite MMO isn't playable. Would be cool to be on your server and learn from you, have been watching your Necro/mage guides past 2 days lol.
It all depends on the ruleset and what our guild votes on. Stay tuned!
@@doctornachoz8099 will do sir, thank you again for the great content!
Which server would you recommend a new player to join atm?
Do you use the standard UI , or would you recommend other preferred UI?
Thanks.
I use the standard UI. sorry, but I don't know much about the other UIs.
Nostalgia… nostalgia…. Every dang thing you make bud is full of nostalgia. Every game I’ve played has nostalgia… D2, CS 1.5 and 1.6, DAC, team fortress, WOW (before burning crusades)… every game I remember playing had this amazing quality of dragging me into a world of play (fast paced or slow as a snail/ repetitive to build skill or grind to the top). Everything I loved about games from these days was the if I want to do it then I’ll do it (NOT PAY FOR IT). I can’t explain how much I hate this about modern games. No mystery or commitment but just in your face well if you pay this then you can xxxx. Honestly I can’t explain how much I miss mmorpg that had nothing but a subscription. You have to cover cost of the server? Sorry but paying cash for anything else is a ban. Here’s my money. Versus a modern giant walkthrough that you can’t be “better?” at by buy diamonds needed for chrome coins to be used for building skills and buying equipment ($100 for a rusty sword…..) bring back a real game that can only be won within the game please. Everything else will only last maybe a few months and eventually people will just stop playing the games because there is nothing enjoyable about the game. My 2 cent. Miss EQ and hope a remake or a new release will bring back the only thing people loved about Games in general
where can i buy the best food at tlp eq launch that stacks above 20 ?, so i dont have to keep buying for along time as a mage... (note: i dont want to summon it)
I like to buy Bread and milk which can be bought in stacks of 100 which can stack up to 1000. Cheap price too.
What about drakken?
Mage 4 life!
I always thought the air pet was the rogue and the water pet stunned.
Air pet is the one that stuns and Water is the Rogue. The air pet is probably the one you'll use the most.
All these years I've had it backwards lol...thanks for the clarification.
btw, is it possible to join your guild?
If you have a microphone and headset you can join us. Here is the discord invite which will expire 24hrs from when it is posted. Make sure you post on the main forum and i'll give you access. discord.gg/vqJR9U
cool, thanks.
Gnomes get a race xp bonus... Plus they can run faster they get hit less and take less damage... A friend of mine had a Gnome Necro and she was fast she told me she never put 1 AA in to run speed... plus if you jump you do a backflip... Lol
Interesting. I never noticed the exp boost. i like gnomes for GnomOvision
@@doctornachoz8099 if remember right it's almost 10 percent..
I know this is an old comment but for anyone reading this in the future gnomes do not get a run speed increase and they do not take less damage.
Kind of hard to start a mage on that server when you can't even get logged into the server
The que for Aradune is about 102m at 1:23pm PST. We'll see how high it goes. I've started on Rizlona since there is no que there.
High Elf?
Anyone know which video he CM99games is talking about?
give me a time in the video and i'll get you a link
@@doctornachoz8099 ua-cam.com/video/pA7ThNtX_1c/v-deo.html @24:24 you say check out my video how to get rich on a classic server

And this one ua-cam.com/video/EGSO-u7P-PY/v-deo.html
Rogue next. Come on halflings!
I did a rogue halfling guide back in 2017.
More rogue! 😂
Haha! so rough with no gear :(
My pants can summon poison 😆😆
Never manually set stats and still killed all content past pop multiple times. Its just not worth worrying about imo
Rolling a mage on a TLP server? Put points in STA. Enchanter? DEFINITELY put all you can in STA. Necro/Shaman? Mana won't even be a concern. Go all in on STA. See a pattern here? One extra nuke means nothing, if you can't survive the fight or soak up the healer's mana, keeping you alive, when they should be focusing on the tank. When you pull aggro, and the mob quads and crits you down below 30% or so, good luck getting the tank or anyone else to pull it off you. HP is life in EQ, and STA is the most difficult stat to max in older EQ. Sure, INT is important for casters, but if you're dead, it won't matter how much mana you started with. Wizard is probably the only caster I would dump all I could into INT, because they're such a one-trick pony.
If you know you're going to be rolling around with friends able to tank for you then having more Stamina isn't all that helpful unless you're a necromancer or a shaman since they can convert health into mana. If you're not taking damage then that boosted Stamina isn't actually doing anything. Also, yes, low health aggro is a thing in EQ and one of the best ways to get an aggro lock - not that any tank wants that unless they really like living close to the edge. One of the best skills a player using a caster can develop is how to pace themselves. Just because you can drop a bunch of nukes and/or DoTs on a target the moment it reaches camp doesn't mean you automatically should.
On another note avoidance is indeed better than mitigation. There's a minimum amount of damage mobs can deal with each hit even with mitigation. Not getting hit means that swing is guaranteed to deal zero damage. It also means that proc effects the mob has have fewer chances to fire.
Great tips! Well said!!
@@ladyabaxa "If you're not taking damage then that boosted Stamina isn't actually doing anything." That's fair. Maybe it boils down to play style as much as anything. Personally, I play as much solo as grouped (more, actually), so I like the extra bit of insurance. If you never fight outside of a group, I could see where you might prefer to boost your mana over your HP.
Do a ranger episode 🥰
You skipped high elf
i don't know why I forgot to give Hight Elves some love...
Hi there! Could I ask for a discord invite please? I'd love to join you for Aradune.
Here is the discord invite which will expire 24hrs from when it is posted. Make sure you post on the main forum and i'll give you access. discord.gg/vqJR9U
Don't even buy the Earth pet it is not worth it, it does very little damage compared to the others, it can't hold aggro, it's root gets resisted most of the time. Water pet is the best, 2nd highest health, dps, and aggro. Leveling up all I will only use water and air, you can switch to fire if you're in a group. Soloing with fire pet just doesn't have the health. This is just my opinion, but it's based on a lot of experience playing mages. Experiment yourself if you want.
Same here. I like the air pet the most for the stuns. I remember the Fire pet had a bug on Agnarr where the low level ones were hitting for 300+ at some point, but then they fixed it. :(
I went mostly 1 to 30 earth pet mostly, as solo on live back when kunark was new. If you keep your defense skills up it was no issue jumping in and stabbing while you nuke, adding your weapon dps helped over come the pets weaker dps. And you had the safety of roots and a pet with more hp. And because you kept you defense skills up bad pulls were not as bad. After 30 sure that won't work but now you can take a hit or avoid a hit because early on when things couldn't one tap you, you didn't waste not getting skilled.
It's pronounced "Air-uh-dite" just saying. :)
What about the High Elf?
they are good, but for a mage then INT is lower and high INT is the way to god on mages.
What about drakken?
Drakken were not available at the start of this TLP, but you can start one when it becomes unlocked.
