The most eye-grabbing moment was back in 1999, when I first started my high elf cleric. I remember trying to get to Kelethin, and shout-asked if anyone knew the way. A higher level ranger, in FULL roleplay mode, came by and led me all the way to Kelethin, making comments about the dangers of Crushbone and his gratitude for Felwithe as an ally in the coming fights ahead. Then, I saw the city, and I was completely blown away - he gave me a mace and a shield to start out with and wished me well. I had never experiencing anything like in on any video game ever, and that memory still sticks with me over 20 years later.
One thing I do find really sad about the direction EQ went was for whatever reason, you saw the roleplaying vanish. Seems like that was only a super early-era kind of thing, but it was really, really neat to parttake in.

I had a very similar experience on Xegony with roleplaying when I first started playing in the summer of 1999. ( I think it was summer) I had a paladin and came across so many role players and I RPd back since I had some experience in RPing when I had been playing pen and paper Dungeons & Dragons all through out college. I was given several pieces of Bronze and a nice sword and shield and I felt almost invincible at my level. Later on some of those same people helped me along in getting my ghoulbane by clearing down to the camp with me and helping me separate the spawns so I could handle it by my self. I got my Ghoulbane and after I manage to get out of Uguk I did a shout that I finally got my GB and everyone in the zone cheered! Those were the days. I have yet to really recapture any of that. I think the closet I came was when I played DAOC when it was released, and here just recently EQ Project Quarm. THe people on Quarm are sooo nice.

@@alphadragongamingFTW I remember that we were looking for a guild to ally with, because ours was too small to put together a full raid force. It took several weeks to make it happen. Because we all had to learn Dwarvish and gain faction with Kaladim because that's where the meeting to ally our guilds was going to be held.

That is what playing back in the day was like. Even if it was not full role play, people were all about the experience. The concept of 'pay it forward' was huge too.

Everquest really helped my development as a child, infact being able to spell, read, and type very fast from playing the game from a young age actually masked a profound learning disability which was only discovered by my tutors in university from my attempts of writing degree+ papers!

1999. My half elf bard born in Qeynos, completely blown by the size and danger of the world , ventures to Blackburrrow for the first time.
A train full of bloodthirsty screaming Gnolls rushes to me. I panick, try to run, loose orientation and fall in the hole at the entrance. 3 seconds later I am dead .
All my meagre belongings lost , a deep sense of despair overwhelming me but I go back.
At the entrance a high level (anybody above 20 was for me high level and impossibly glorious) tells me that he knows where my corpse fell and that he would help.
He fights all the way to the horrible depths of Blackburrow and leads me to my corpse. I almost faint with relief and fear to not make it back. We did.
My undying gratitude to this hero whose name I have forgotten but whose kindness I still remember 25 years later.

That's really what drove EQ in the early days: it was a social system with an attached MMORPG that happened to be lots of fun. The problem is that now there are TONS of social interaction apps that have siphoned off and fractured what used to be a cohesive player base into a billion different subgroups whose main interests nowadays seem to consist solely of themselves.
How do we fix that and bring back the old style D&D players that were emotionally invested in creating characters into which they vested a great deal of creativity? I dunno. But playing an RPG with "Stinky McPimpleDik" whose chat capabilities would make a lolcow blush seems kinda ubiquitous across all platforms. Maybe we're just dying out. 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, well now it's not. You either solo, you raid, or you quit. Granted there are the groups of people who play together, all the time. I'm not in one of those, nor will I ever be. People log on, they form up their predetermined groups, and when they get tired, the activity is over. No more asking for more people to join, because there are no people. And I've been back in EQ long enough to know that if you're a solo playing spamming for a group, you might as well be talking to yourself. And that in fact, to most people, makes them look down on you. Why? Because you don't have the experience to know that isn't how things work anymore and if you're stupid enough not to know that, then you're probably not worth dealing with.

For me its the sense of adventure you get from EQ that no other game does for me. Specifically exploring a dungeon for the first time, I'll never forget bumping into a wall and going through it being a secret wall feeling like data from the goonies and screaming over the party chat "GUYS! I'm in a whole another room!". Getting truly lost in the world with friends for hours and hours on end is why EverQuest will always hold a place in my heart and while I may take breaks for as long as the servers are up I will always find my way home.

Early on, our normal group got stranded in the Qeynos / Blackburrow area. I was not yet capable of porting us (as a wizard) so we made the run across the Karanas and up the ramp into Highpass, through Kithicor (along the wall, even though we waited until daylight!) and into the Commonlands. Now, by this time our group was actually 8 members strong, so we formed an ad-hoc raid by putting two groups of 4 together. My wife led one group and I, the other, and I was on the phone with the other husband and wife team who were also playing in opposite groups. I think our biggest takedown that day was the griffawns in Northern Karana, but it's been 25 years and the memory is a bit fuzzy. Maybe they were Griffins and the one's in the Commonlands were Griffawns, I dunno. Either way, it was a blast, our first "raid," and a hell of a grand adventure for all of us. I think we were level 12 or so.

A couple of days in I met a High Elf, Cleric if I remember correctly, named Breezer though so with a name like that he might've been an Enchanter. Anyways, after killing some orcs for awhile near the Northern most lift nearest Crushbone he asked if I wanted to learn any of the languages. I had no clue what he was talking about so he gave instructions, I followed, & soon began learning various EQ languages. I was so amazed & hooked.

I remember camping Ragefire with a friend (he was a cleric) back in the original Kunark and when Ragefire was still in SolB. The server had a rotation for clerics ready for the last encounter and it was my friends turn. If you left the zone at any time you forfeited your spot. We sat there for 68 hours. His guild cleared the Fire Giants everytime they respawned so they could come enmass to kill Ragefire. Finally, Rage fire pops ! We put out the call and the guild comes running. He does the turn in we do both fights and before he can loot the piece he goes LINKDEAD. Remember this is dial up modem era. 68 hours and no issue and POOF he disappears. Luckily after some resets he got back in just in time to loot the piece. A rez stick back in the day was huge and our guild was happy we had it! I slept for 17 hours after that haha

EQ was special to me because it let me build and create “my character” in a way I had never been able to do in a game before. The progression thereafter was that much more special because I was growing and learning in my own way. Having that level of customisation in a rich world with deep lore made me feel like I was creating a place for myself in Norrath, especially when I felt like I have no place for myself on Earth

    - first black screen from blind
    - first death in the middle of Kithikor by night
    - first death from trap in Beffalen
    - first GM running full speed and full gear in Nektulos (WTF!!!)
    - /ooc train to zone macro
    - you have been killed by Kizdean Gix
    And a lot more...
    To be continued ... I hope :)

I first started playing Everquest in early 2000 when I was in 6th grade. I reached level 14 or so and had just gotten some bronze armor on as a Paladin. I got too big for my britches and thought I could take on the world beyond the Commonlands(EC and WC). I wandered into Kithicor Forest and soon thereafter, night fell. I was swarmed by the high level undead and quickly was killed. I had no idea where my corpse was in my frantic attempt at an escape. I cried my eyes out after I died because I was too terrified to go back and search the huge zone for my corpse. My corpse decayed with all of my gear... I learned a very important lesson about Everquest that day. Don't get too big for your britches.

I used to enjoy drawing my characters, and each armor piece had an identity. It created this cool patchwork of all of my character's adventures. This does not happen when it's all the same.
My most stubborn memory : I was riding a boat, I believe it was just a boat to and from Freeport. I was either in the wrong spot, or I lagged on load. My fully equipt Cleric fell into the water. I had a panic. I could not find anyone on that could summon my body. An Iksar finally messaged me back. This guy dove into the ocean with no way of knowing where I was. He swam up and down the boat path. Eventually he found my body and he dragged it all the way back to me. If you know how far a boats path can be, before zoning you know that is huge. It was amazing. I also very much remember the tunnel and people paying it forward. Paying any favor forward was a huge deal. Sitting and taking donations for buffs. Etc. I miss the social aspect of it.
They make you able to solo which is great but then, no one needs you. I have other memories but that Iksar was awesome. Oh and my posts are STILL on Allakhazam mostly under Valdon Gravestone.

I used to play a long time ago around the Velious Expansion. I have fond memories of my time in Everquest. Your idea about updating the models would be amazing, and honestly I feel as though it would bring new players into the game. I would imagine from an outsiders perspective the game has grown stale after so many years. After watching your video though, I hope that they are looking to put in some more work with future and more content rich updates, especially the visuals. That would do a lot to bring in new players.

May of shared this before, but one my all time greatest raid memories comes from Planes of Power. It's raid night, we are going to fight Coirnav, we have Xegony and Fennin down, and starting work Coirnav and the Rathe. We are set up, we start the fight, things are going great, we are fighting coirnav, can barely see anything left on his HP bar when my screen locks up, and I find myself in the Plane of Tranquility. Yup, we missed the 15 minute timer and had been booted from the zone. Lots of explicitives in guild chat, and the active roster went from like 80 to 10 in about 20 seconds. That would be what I consider my first ever fail on an enrage timer, less than 1% hp, and while not a wipe, might as well of been.

When you play up a SHD or something, you really feel like melee abilities and magic are unequally balanced to the point where I don't even press my melee buttons if they don't have an effect like stunning or something, because autoattack does like 40 times more damage than me mashing my entire hotbar. Spells however seem to actually do a meaningful amount of damage, and I have no idea why. I used to love playing Assassin, but it feels pointless now except for Assassinate or Mortal Blade. Entering high level areas is also mind boggling when you autoattack one-shot heroics and then get your trash kicked in from a boss that visually looks no more challenging than the rest
Also, the individual stats being redesigned to Primary Stats really took the immersion away from me when I was excited for progression servers back when

Everquest is what started my addiction to MMOs. I don't always have the fondest of memories of my actual playtime back in the day, mostly due to the fact that I was one of those weirdos who actually played on the PVP servers, and as a teenager I ended up being pretty toxic at times. Still, the world itself I've always looked back on fondly. I put another good amount of time in on Thornblade when it came out, and I'm interested to see what they will do with TLPs this year. As much as I love the idea of the game, I won't be going back if it's just another classic experience. I'm not saying I just want another random loot server, but it will need to be something equally as radical and interesting, or I won't be playing.
My dream would be for them to somehow make an EQ3 that managed to straddle the difference between the encouragement of social engagement along with the realistic and sometimes punishing consequences of EQ, but with gameplay that wasn't braindead boring (looking at you melee classes). For a while I thought Ashes of Creation would be that game, but I've lost almost all interest in it over the years of following the development updates, as it seems to be leaning more and more into an elitist focus where all of the interesting mechanics are designed for a small percentage of no-lifers, (node mayors, castles, flying mounts, freeholds, legendary weapons, no karma on the ocean, etc.), and 95% of players it seems are expected to just play as loyal serfs.

I'm an active EQ player and have been playing for well over a decade. I jumped onto the ship whenever everyone else seemingly jumped off and my experience with the game has been vastly different than the nostalgia chasers that you normally see. I don't sit here day dreaming through rose tinted glasses about the good ol' days. I've played through multiple TLPs as well as being an active participant on the Live servers. All this being said, my most fond memories are of raiding content and clearing before the other guilds can clear it. That level of excitement to see clear times faster than another gives everyone involved friendly competition and it keeps the raiding scene alive through all the cookie cutter expansions we've had for the past several years.
What I'm hoping for the future of Everquest, for all of our sakes, is that they begin to at least attempt to police their game again. TLPs and Live servers both are rampant with botters, cheaters, farmers, and multi-boxing armies. All of this has killed the spirit of Everquest and the staff seems to not care enough to get this epidemic under control. I miss the days of grabbing a group for an AA grind and cutting it up in group chat while we mindlessly kill mob after mob. Now, if you aren't running with a tight group of friends, you are stuck solo/molo and Everquest just isn't built for that. I put Everquest 1 at a 2 star on the survey specifically because I would never recommend the game in the current state that it's in to any new player. It's barren and confusing for a new player to join into.

Honestly, GMs. That's what EverQuest needs more of. Ones that are empowered to script and run spontaneous events, investigate player /reports, ban (even if just temporarily) people who cheat/grief/etc.
And depth. People like to talk about the graphics or the music or whatever, but visuals are outdated the moment they're released. Every game needs to attract players, sure; but more than that, they need to KEEP THEM. And when your game descends into a phat lewtz stat inflation death spiral that has as much lore behind it as a leaflet on famous Jewish sports legends, even the hard-core don't want to bother. 🤷‍♂️
Edit: That DX11 upgrade really killed me, as my old laptop's GPU doesn't support DX11. So, now I can't play. At all. Gonna have to wait until I buy a new computer now. 🤦‍♂️

I miss how the world felt immersive there werent instant travel abilities you bare minimum needed a wizard or a druid to get somewhere quick and even that was limited by the locations they could go. I loved how as a human shadowknight I had to be careful in town because I may be human but my dark class may lead to a fight I wasnt expecting. Not to mention the social aspect baked into the game that has been all but removed from MMOs now.

I prefer the general gameplay of EQ. It’s a natural, truly open world fantasy MMO where how you do things matters to not only your personal story but that of others when grouping/raiding.
I prefer the activity options and depth of EQ2. Through specialized quests (heritage, lore and legend, etc), crafting, housing, etc it allows such a wide variety of things to delve into. For instance I want to start a housing library and collect as many books as possible with a Conjurer TSing Scribe focused on gaining arcane knowledge. That could be hours and hours of gameplay.
I hope the next EQ melds the strong points of EQ and EQ2 to create an extremely versatile and long lasting MMO.

For years they thought I was a girl, because I played a halfling female druid. It wasn't until another clan mate asked me what gender I was, and he let me know that Saphie and Briah thought I was a girl. I've had to ditch Windows, thuse making it near impossible to play EQ1. (switched to Apple, not Linux like I've done before) So I've been playing WoW a little while, in the back of my mind, hoping the 64bit switch might make it possible to run EQ1 on my M3 iMac.
While playing WoW again the difference in how it was managed is SO different, and frankly better. They had a vision into the future that truly out classed the management of EQ1. I prefer EQ1. I like the community in EQ1 WAY better than in WoW. (it's an age thing I think) Yes, it was much easier to future proof WoW since they had a lot more staff and money to work with, but it's still very obvious that EQ1 was not managed in a way looking this far into the future of the game. WoW dealt with this problem much better.
Again, I ditched Windows, not EQ1...but a game is a game and (talk about mis-management) after the stuff I've had to deal with on Windows at home, and in the work place, I finally had enough. Tinkering in Linux was not a practical solution even though it would mean I could play EQ1 still. As it stands, I'm so happy with my iMac M3 (24gb RAM + 2tb storage) and have confidence it'll last me a good 6 years (minimum) based on my personal needs and affinity for older games. (just not ancient games like EQ1 hehehe)

EQ is definitely bloated with skills/spells.. instead of coming out with endless expansions (with further add to the bloat), they should spend some serious time revamping the early gameplay to bring in new players. They could slow the pace down, focus on adding quests to racial starting cities and adding incentive for existing players to create alts to increase the player base for grouping. There's a lot they could do to bring back some fun in the older zones, instead of just doing them as hardcore heritage zones for higher level players once in awhile.

The biggest thing that's had everquest shrinking slowly over the years has been how completely out of touch the people who make it are with people who don't play it or don't play it super hardcore. A lot of the jealous rage that seeped into SOE after WoW became the smash hit it did by copy pasting and tweaking the EQ formula still has a lot of influence over how things are run in Carlsbad. It's a shame - an everquest that isn't completely repellant to newcomers would be soaking up tons and tons of new players as wow has past its peak and there's really nothing else worth playing in the MMO space.
But, it's just too much leveling alone, so that pretty much just leaves TLPs for new players. This last round of TLPs was ruined by JChan's *terrible* response to a massive widespread dupe issue that blew up all of the TLP economies. I had four friends playing with me for the first time (after years of attempting to convince them) on the TLP and the duping stuff chased them away.

  • @Lompico

The difficulty was enough that it made achieving something meaningful, and it made having a guild where you could group with people meaningful vs the group finder instance grind of more modern mmos. And the combat roles are the best with the cc role actually mattering, and pulling actually mattering, and tanking/aggro control mattering. Newer MMOs are so easy they are boring. I played from about 1997 thru 2003, and then for a couple month in 2023. It felt empty and lonely and boring in 2023, even on a TLV or randomized loot server.

If EQ had done that and had left the big world a big part of its gameplay pre luclin I think its the game that still dominates not wow.

Everquest is a failed company that people can not seem to get away from. They failed with the DX 11 update shouldn't be the job of the players to find workarounds. I mean the devs are paid, right? If there is an item dupe they talk to the shareholders more then the players that are affected by it they hide the fact there was a dupe for weeks saying tell was clear it was going around and people were still able to keep most of the plat. Suspending players for using quests in the game that were fun or for getting duped items, even if they didn't know about the dup. Everquest as a game was great but the company in general has failed over and over
