I absolutely love the colors you have used! And the Wash idea to bring out the details on the flesh and wings, brilliant! I'd like to try on a model of my own. Pro tip; When trying to get coverage with your white like you had to do, look on your color wheel to the opposite side of the relative color on your model currently. Then tint the white with a small amount of that opposite color. The one you found on your color wheel. This dramatically increases the coverage capacity of that white over that particular color. I hope you find that useful. Cheers!
Love that fix to bring the scales back out. Theres a few cloaks i need to go back and do that to. I also love that blackened metal and that it is so simple to do. I stumbled on somthing similar with ratling grime and some overly shiny armour on a test model that changed it from tin soldier to menacing af instantly - i dont have a lot of paints and im still not sure what they all do with each other yet so it was a nice surprise. Great vid again!
This will be my first "real effort" model project, been burnt out trying to get through my infantry. Hoping this teaches me some real skill. I have it saved and ready
I actually stumbled into a good use for the black legion. I used it for black armour for my STE; base spray leadbelcher, cover with black legion, dry brush with iron hands steel (I assume any other metal would be fine). Helps it read as black metal armour that knights might have rather than the flat plastic blue if my ultramarine power armour
That turned out great! I think the 50/50 approach for videos (not all) would be really great for everybody! Oh, and think we need a magenta/purple cabbage next (-:
It could definitely benefit from one, especially if you only wanted to hit the cracks exclusively, this was the lazy middle ground between that and a filter :D
I really would like to see you paint this beast the colour scheme at around 16:30 on your phone, the white/grey/black but in your own style, like this one. I do not really dig the yellow scheme but the technics you are using are next level. Keep it up!
Thanks so much for the kind words dude, the model is wonderful enough that I'm pretty tempted to do another! I can't pick what it'd be though, turquoise may be calling 🙄🙄🙄
That yellow is amazing and you'v got to love how easy it is to get a stunning colour with it. The only part I wondered is when you added a wash to darken the cracks, as brilliant as it looks, wouldn't an oil wash have given a good result with less effort without worrying about darkening the yellow? Just wondering what your thought processes is when deciding a wash method?
Hey dude, it would, 100%, if that was the only intent - I'm fine with the depth added to the surface of the scales, it shades a little according to texture, and flters, adding that warmth. If you wanted to just go for the cracks, the oil wash would be far superior, maybe it'd work for the albino style one you can see me referring to for shading reference, for example.
@@ArtisOpus Ah ok, makes sense! Sometimes I struggle understanding wash selection either way and knowing which is the best for the job - Appreciate the answer, it helps a load :)
In an email to Artis Opus support, I asked about Series D + zenithal over black with contrast paints on behalf of a reasonably large contrast painting group. It's great to see a video about it, and hopefully we'll see more in the future.
Thanks man, I'm very tempted to try out another one and really push it further, somehow, either animal markings, or colour, or just double the time and increase the quality... Can't make my mind up!
@@ArtisOpus animal markings would be really interesting. When done right that can push the quality through the roof. Also make each scale feel like it is an unique thing.
probably just sold me a cabbage. quick tip, if the contrast paint has a layer of pigment on the bottom that behaves like a heavy body wash, if it doesn't then it behaves more like an ink.
Thanks buddy! I realised this shortly after this one, we cover it in the video with the bloodthirster on the cover :) Do a cabbage, they are the best 🥰
There should be an anxiety trigger warning at the beginning of this vid with all the double dipping going on. ;) great vid as always and a fantastic result.
Did you ever find the megaboss? Going to use your process on my cabbage, thank you for showing us how these contrasts can be used together I would never have thought to try.
I did yeah, the entire army painting process was recorded actually, it's quite a lot of footage, so it's in the queue for when we get a slot/work out the format :)
I love oils, here the contrasts and shades really worked, but maybe for pushing the cracks in the skin, without filtering, oils could have definitely been used.
@@ArtisOpus Also want to say that you've really turned my opinion of drybrushing around entirely. I made a hash of it as a kid and never knew it could be so smooth!
I mix in extra contrast medium in to the strogest of the contrast colors, i realy like the new 27 colors, and try to mix some of the Black legion in to some nuln oil, makes it darker and better in my opinion, and that sewer contrast(cant remember the full name) is great to do dark wood and the darkest parts of leather. I found good uses for all the contrast colors. Are you going to try out Valljeo Xpress Color when they release? Valljeo's contrast style paint
Good to hear, dude, so you're basically using them to tint things, and behave like shades? (That's not critical, if it sounds it, they'll make some colours that aren't in the shades range). I will probably give them a test, if they're good, Vallejo know their stuff, so I presume they won't be a rushed product, and will have a place in the market. There's so much out there that we tend to be pretty picky :) Cheers!
How about a monochromatic greyscale/black and white drybrushing vid? I just watched a bunch of vid on it from SchnauzerFaceMinis, Zumikito Miniatures, Angel GiraldeZ and Nights at the Game Table. But I'm curious if it can be done with the 100% drybrushing method that you use. Seems like it might be a decent speed paint method for Dnd minis. Rather than spending hours with multiple colours, go for that vintage black and white photograph/TV aesthetic.
How do you detach the wings? When I'm building models I glue them together. Hold do you hold them together for priming and painting? Do you glue them after the paint with plastic glue?
I use the smallest amount and it practically fuses them together. Are you just doing some minor dots to hold in place then do a final full glue after the paint?@@ArtisOpus
What do you use to keep your brushes in such excellent condition? I want to get some of those brushes, but I want to be able to keep them in good shape.
Note: It's pretty potent! So when we use it later in with the sepia (which is *not* potent, at all) it's just a dot, to up the warmth and coherency for the wash we put over the yellow. Happy painting!
I have asked the question on the Artis Opus website but heard nothing back. Can you clean the texture palette, or is it a one use and throw away item. I was thinking about buying one, but didn't want to buy something for that much that will get thrown away in a week or 2.
