Really good video, thanks. I'm coming to more of the opinion that contrast isn't a magic paint that works with everything but is another tool in your toolbox, the high pigment makes it useful for many things, tinting metal was my last adventure, lovely blue steel effect over silver
As always a great video. Awesome how you show things that many other painting channels forget to show. Not to mention how you explain every step in detail with small tips and tricks. Excellent!

I just scored the tyranid half of the leviathan box for super cheap. Your videos will be my go to when i start them. I like to pull my elbows into my side when i brace for painting and super precise hobby knife cuts.
Great video! Really enjoy these live premieres when I can catch them. Definitely some things to try, thank you. Love seeing this detail on smaller troops.
Wow that blue is *chefs kiss* I am doing blueish color shift paints for my nids shells but I might try this pattern with a bright silver to make it more interesting!
Could you go into why you switch between lahmian medium and contrast medium (or even water)? I'm sure it's probably something simple! Thank you so much for these though. I've visibly improved this week alone from applying these methods, and I can't wait to get started on my next mini. Mixing white ink with the contrast paint makes it like a liquid highlight which is amazing for glazing over the highlights that get a little desaturated
Byron, just recently purchased your box set of drybrushes ( ninjon edition) by god they are soooo good, no more cheap makeup brushes for me. After this video I am now looking at purchasing a series S-set of brushes next.
Is there a guide to that little blue guy you showed off at the start of the video a couple of times? Or more pictures some place or anything at all around him. I... love, love, love that and really want to steal it...
Hey dude, a couple more pics on Instagram, but importantly he's in edit now, and you'll be getting a *very* thorough tutorial on him/breaking down citadel schemes in the near future :) Key colours: Ulthuan Grey,Terradon Turquoise (shell, diluted lots for skin), doomfire magenta for the pistol.
This was wonderful thank you Byron! It would be great to see this applied to something with hard edges like a space marine (particularly the last technique).
beautiful work as ever. Would it be possible to get more info on highlighting on less organic/complex surfaces? on a space marine or even on a guardsmen it can be a little awkward when you havent got the bone structure etc to work off of.
Hey Opus great video! Being a new painter I find it intimidating to mix contrast colors. Would be really educational to see you break down the different colors of contrast and how they mix. Maybe a video just on breaking down the color wheel and how you did that through painting your miniatures. That said this video really did help me, because I'm using the slap chop method for my GSC Acolyte Hybrids! I'm not sure yet on how to paint their arms after painting them with black speed paint. I want that cool blue outline with a good shade coming off the blue highlight. Havnt gotten that far but I would really love your feedback.
I could watch this legend paint all day. Just got into all this and blew my budget on the leviathan box and paints. Need to figure out how to make my own dry palette on the cheap. Any ideas or tips on them?
Okay mate so you told me to drop a new comment not a reply. Looking at bigger models with flatter carapace and less *ridges* to follow, for example carnifex. Tyrant guard. Etc. Because the carapace is flatter (and curved at ends) - with larger spaces but with less ridges, whenever I try to do this method it feels like it looks out of place. In smaller minis, new termagants, Barbgaunts, I find it looks really good because there's lots of details to follow.
Thanks, man :). OK, well firstly; your question makes sense, it is harder on bigger stuff. Remember, with this technique you can make things more subtle, and if you've contrasted under you're still going to have more interesting variation in the shells, which you don't want to completely pull the attention from. I'd take a cue from the smaller areas of the mini (e.g. up from the base of the tail where scales are smaller), do what you think is right there... If this looks good, carefully repeat it on the larger areas, but keep it quite subtle (thin repeated lines, in the direction/orientation that makes sense). Once you've done this, and an edge, you can knock it back with the repeated contrast step. Repetition is hugely important, and all the more on bigger stuff!
Hmm ... maybe before putting on the contrast paints you can make harder highlights with black/grey/white. That should shimmer throught the contrast paint.
I really liked this video, and the previous contrast one. Im going to try it on my new leviathan minis as a evolution/ different scheme. I have a similar green colour to yours, but I use a green-yellow highlight; any idea what colour/ technique I could use to achieve it? The yellow green (moot green/ flash gitz mix) is fairly see through which means I need a lot of layers and can make mistakes.
I watch this series and iam so inspired by that. When iam at home in a few days I will Start painting my New seraphon army that way. So iam exited what results I can get after using this input. I will Show my work after. I order your brushes when I am at home and than start. Hope it will work like youres
Banger of a video! Do you have any tips on painting smaller models like Cadian troops using dry brush? I feel there's not enough room for the transitions you create with drybrush to appear fully
Smaller brush and patience and be realistic, without spending a huge investment per model you are probably going to have to lose a couple of the transitions, but with them being smaller this is fine, one good transition will do, especially when you have lots of them!
@@ArtisOpus ty for the response! I'm probably doing slapchop intl green snake -> sybarite green. Should I use a dark blue as a base instead of black? Or even spend a bit extra time going for blue/purple over the black on the shadows?
My goodness me this was the vid I was looking for since forever!! I just invested in speedpaint to shift from pure acrylic after getting fed up with taking too long to paint. But I always hoped to pop a few highlights because I don't really like the finish of contrast paints. You're so good at demonstrating simple techniques that are so effective, thank you SO much for sharing your skills. Really inspiring ⭐⭐⭐ And WHERE did you get that amazing singlet you paint your minis in?!! 😄👍👍 Love your content.
Absolute mini-painting must in recent UK temps :Z! Half of my T's had their sleeves removed. Thanks for the kind words, this is exactly what we'd hoped for from this video, so stoked! Please check out Monday's video, we're running a bit of a hashtag (#NidOpus) - we're starting with people sharing the carapace method on their own minis, but I'd not say no to seeing the highlight one on top, too!
Is there a video of where you complete the model? I am at a stopping point on how to cover up the areas where the contrasts hit areas I didn't want to.
This method works fantastic for leather cloaks and I love using it for colored fabric. I think You need two areas to explore with this approach: 1. Painting white 2. Painting non-organic shapes
I have used the "blob" or "spotty" highlight on the banana colour scheme from the previous video. Given how many layers of contrast and washes I put on before then applying the dot, could I do the dots at an earlier stage, say just after the first contrast wash? I used a really thinned down was of my original contrast layer but the carapace is now more brown than banana!
Quick question, (I’m new at this so be gentle out there) do you normally paint the mini in pieces, and then assemble it or was this for demonstration purposes only. To be clear I’m not looking to paint an entire army, I don’t play (forgive me) I just think this approach makes sense when you want this amount of detail and I think it might make it easier, if not faster to paint. Thanks
Not a worry man! Sometimes it does make sense, for me that's normally down to access issues with big brushes and the techniques we use, generally it's something like a cape, wings, big stuff :)
He's coming! Largely: Ulthuan Grey, Very Dilute Terradon turquoise (skin is just those two), terradon turquoise for the scales :). Doomfire magenta took care of the pink bits, aethermatic blue for the couple of greeny parts (y)
Im sure this has been brought to your attention. But the series D brushes are being knocked off everywhere on Amazon! I bought a set for a measly 18 USD and to no surprise started falling apart right away. No replacement for the true Series D brushes.
Unfortunately, it's something that's rife in the industry, if you're imaginative, you get copied... Mostly by people who don't understand just how hard it is to make things right (old-fashioned, high-quality materials, mostly by-hand), who take people for a ride with low-durability knock-offs :|. We're going nowhere mate, class is permanent, and we spend an average of 5 years developing and testing each product, it's normal for people to test what else is out there once, and then come back to the originals for good :).
@@ArtisOpus it sucks, I knew it was a knock off right away. They even had the balls go straight up use some photos of the great work you all do here. Some reviews blew my mind trying to saying it was just as good as the series D. Downright delusional, never owned the originals, or straight up bots I sware! You got fully knocked off, down to the dampening pad the jars, even all 5 sizes! Its just so sick. I've used my XL almost down to a nub but I dont have the heart to replace it yet lol. Your brushes have changed the game forever!
I always get contrast paint into the base of the belly close to the ferrule. It happens when I rinse my brush. I do follow your brush cleaning video, but it doesn't always help with the ferrule part or the prevention. Any advice?
Keep a chunky old size 3 or similar for the dirty tasks, you see the same one of mine used for the heavy stuff in pretty much every video of ours, it will keep your others pretty. You can't 100% clean the contrast out, but it will last for way longer than you think!
You're a wizard Harry (Byron)!! Always love your tutorials, inspiring and informative. Assuming you don't have a house elf hidden under your desk doing this for you (ok no more potter references). Would love to see your take on how you'd plan out and execute a diorama one of these days
I have the Half Blood Prince's colour mixing book! 😅 Mhhmm... OK, I would love this challenge, I will have to think how to format it in a way that didn't scare people off :)
I've been lookin at the brushes for some time now, but they aren't the cheapest, and I use contrast/speed paint a lot, and they are really hard on the brushes, do you experience the same?
Absolutely, but our brushes are the toughest! Natural hair can be revitalised. I 'retire' my brushes a little early to heavy duty work, you will probably notice the same size 3 being used for heavy tasks on the channel for the last year or so of videos :). I put red dots on the end of my retirement brushes.
The highlighting specifically man? What specifically are you looking to achieve (colours pls). Let us know in a separate comment, not a reply, they get lost. We'll get you sorted 👌
It blows my mind I as a complete noob (1 year of hobbie on weekends) ended up doing the same, but because I dont have as many colors, so I ended mixing contrasts+white/light colors to do the highlights hahahah
14:40 - This is a great tutorial, but I can't ignore when a large creator spreads flagrantly incorrect information. A gaming chair is absolutely mandatory if you want to paint miniatures well. It becomes obvious when you look back at GW materials from the 80s. You can see the much sloppier, more simplistic paint jobs they had to go with due to the lack of gaming chairs. You can easily see the throughline of miniature artistry improving hand-in-hand with gaming chair technology. It's only possible for professionals like Byron to paint on a stool due to the muscle memory he has of thousands, even tens-of-thousands of hours of sitting on a gaming chair. And even then, forcing your body to contort into that gaming chair pose without the chair itself is dangerous and harmful to your back muscles.
Thanks for the input man, I hard disagree, though, a gaming chair might be mandatory for gaming, it's what it's made for... It's not been made for painting, though! On the assumption that we want to paint: a) Comfortably b) Safely (in a way that's not damaging) c) In whatever the exactly right position is for painting, light, stability, access, etc Your gaming chair might present several issues, one of the common ones being arms literally stopping you from being able to be in right position from your desk, but also height for elbows down, or wrists braced being achievable, without a curved back. Gaming position is arms down, wide (like the arms of the chair) painting is often arms up, wrists together, very different things. What do you think? Dangerously harmful to your back muscles is you hunched over getting your eyes as close to your mini as they should be, not you sat well supported, holding yourself up, but at no risk.

very fine content mate :)
Very helpful. Wonder, why you use the metal dish instead of wet pallette? Keep up the great work 👍
Hmm ... maybe before putting on the contrast paints you can make harder highlights with black/grey/white. That should shimmer throught the contrast paint.

Is there a video of where you complete the model? I am at a stopping point on how to cover up the areas where the contrasts hit areas I didn't want to.
I wish you would do a video specifically about that minty-fresh termagant.
Watch this space 😱
You sir have just earned yourself a new subscriber.
Are you going to be doing tutorials for the part other than the chitin too?
Yessir! Thanks buddy, plenty more to come!
Do you have a video or guide for the blue termagant you showed at the beginning? Would love to try the scheme.
Check tomorrow's premier, *very in-depth* guide imminent!
Ohh tutorial for that termagant you show there at the start? 😮
In edit, Sir :)
This method works fantastic for leather cloaks and I love using it for colored fabric.
I think You need two areas to explore with this approach:
1. Painting white
2. Painting non-organic shapes
You've chosen a good two, there, they definitely require a little more consideration!
I would like to know where did you buy your shelfs with leds. Thank you so much
I have used the "blob" or "spotty" highlight on the banana colour scheme from the previous video. Given how many layers of contrast and washes I put on before then applying the dot, could I do the dots at an earlier stage, say just after the first contrast wash? I used a really thinned down was of my original contrast layer but the carapace is now more brown than banana!
Where did yo get those amazing display cubes???
Quick question, (I’m new at this so be gentle out there) do you normally paint the mini in pieces, and then assemble it or was this for demonstration purposes only. To be clear I’m not looking to paint an entire army, I don’t play (forgive me) I just think this approach makes sense when you want this amount of detail and I think it might make it easier, if not faster to paint. Thanks
Not a worry man! Sometimes it does make sense, for me that's normally down to access issues with big brushes and the techniques we use, generally it's something like a cape, wings, big stuff :)
Thanks for the video. What paints did you use on the blue nid that's your favourite?
Bit confused about what exactly is the unusual bit?😅
Just using a single highlight, and then repeating your contrast steps over it for coherency/hiding mistakes :)
So 40mins of video, to explain something that fits in one tweet?
Love your channel, but man
No god hands needed, got it. Do I need straight brushes? 😅
Not for technique #3! ☺️
Does these mean that the dry brushing that you had done some much over last few years isn’t as good as this contrast method
I noticed that the green one suddenly turned black on the skin. How did you base coat it again without "spilling" it over to the green?
Series M 2 for the dangerous bits close, it's real quick with a control brush, then just jump to my trusty old S3 :)
Excellent and yes can we have a vid on how to do the brain:
I have started testing! 🧪
Pink brain plz!
Requests building! You're probably going to get your way :)
Wanted to ask this question: But is it possible to undershade somehow with drybrushing
Under the drybrushing, or to undershade USING drybrushing? If #2 then absolutely yes, just like airbrushing it.
@@ArtisOpus Yeah! #2, did you have an video covering this ? 🤔
Mhhmm...
Pink glowing brain tutorial please!
The masses are speaking!
Struggling to do this on a bigger carapace. Any tips?
The highlighting specifically man? What specifically are you looking to achieve (colours pls).
Let us know in a separate comment, not a reply, they get lost.
We'll get you sorted 👌
Do you want to sell a set of S series brushes because….. 😅
We always do! Head to the store :)
@@ArtisOpus I know the way :)
It blows my mind I as a complete noob (1 year of hobbie on weekends) ended up doing the same, but because I dont have as many colors, so I ended mixing contrasts+white/light colors to do the highlights hahahah
Necessity is the mother of invention! 🧪
Hey hey
Hey hey hey!
Pink brain 🧠 my zombie in me just started saying "brain's, brains". 😅
I think we've nearly reached the required amount of requests for this, now :)
Uhm excuse you god hand clippers are triple S tier
:D I use Dispae, they are ascention-level!
Tasty 🤤
🥰🥰
-Yaay more Hive Fleet Hippocampinae lol. sorry I'll stop now ( maybe )
Never! :)
PINK GLOWING BRAIN TUTORIAL !!!!!
The masses are speaking!
On the assumption that we want to paint:
a) Comfortably
b) Safely (in a way that's not damaging)
c) In whatever the exactly right position is for painting, light, stability, access, etc
Your gaming chair might present several issues, one of the common ones being arms literally stopping you from being able to be in right position from your desk, but also height for elbows down, or wrists braced being achievable, without a curved back.
Needs to be matted. I don't like that shiney finish.
You can matte it if you like 👍
What is that dish called and where can I get it please it's at 4.04ish @Artis Opus
