Absolutely, frequently, it's my 'Fresh start' between projects, it's also very relaxing for the eyes, which is great! As an added bonus, when testing paints you can test if they cover well over black :)
I am wondering whats the humidity in your studio because its impossible for me to keep those paint out like that for more than 20 seconds before they are dry xD
I knew someone would ask this! Recording issues plagues both busts, I will do a future video on this specifically though, as it worked so well. Retributor Reikland wash Sepia wash (repeat to taste) Retributor highlight, add silver to taste :)
I have a question. I’m painting something like a deep red and it already has a basecoat of Khorne Red on it. What happens if I put a coat of flesh tearer contrast over that? Because it’s a translucent paint will it just darken the recess?
Not a stupid question! The inside of the piece is fairly flat on the inside, so I just grabbed a flat long piece of sprue, and put a spike in one end to push into the cork I used as a holder. Hope that's useful! I'll put it on a proper plinth soon :)
@@ArtisOpus it was more how the bust was attached to the sprue? Blue tack or glue or? I'm still not sure how I'm gonna attach my subassembly pieces, because I've been rather unlucky with blue tack losing its adhesive before I pretty much for started
If you use superglue it’ll bond strongly enough to paint with but you can just snap the sprue off the bust once done. I assume that’s what he has done :)
No worries, buddy, we only design products that are worth supporting long-term, we'll be supporting the lines ongoing, they're a truly special thing in person, we'll ensure that they have a wide retail release, so maybe you'll get to see one in a FLGS in the future.
😅 a problem we can all empathise with... Although if they are all painted I raise my hat to you, Sir! Maybe just for the extra-shiny dudes, good call :)
How in gods name do your paints stay wet for so long without using a wet palette? I tried painting on a wood palette a little while ago.. and its great early on. but very soon..my paints start to dry. :(
Hey buddy, they're not diluted, so they don't evaporate as fast, and it's primed, so it's less absorbent, we also use compacted, slightly impregnated wood, so it's less porous than normal.
I have krondys and I’m not sure how to build the 2nd head as I got mine through the subscription so it only has instructions on how to build the first head 😭
Before applying the colors it looked so white, I guess you could have skipped the black primer and went for a light grey primer instead? There was so much white from the spray on it, I didn't see any black left...
If I held it upside-down you might have, but yes, you absolutely can, you could start mid/dark grey, or even a blue (see slapchop bloodthirster for an example of starting from a coloured-base)
Mhhm, contrast method on him, specifically? I know of one particular army in the Warhammer scene that was achieved amazingly with contrast + oil washes, which I think is specifically really good for their textures...
Ooooooooo now that sounds interesting. I thought contrast (mainly on thr skin) esp guillman flesh. As I struggle to get the best out of that contrast. Dunno why thou. Keep up the amazing work
I've always thought that the trolololodon looks cool, but mostly the head, so maybe I should do another one, perhaps in a sea-dragon style... Thanks :)
The Warcry mindstealer does it and it’s awesome! Love your videos, products and everything, but I’m really struggling with the flashy snaps, zoom and things between things… making me a feel a bit sick and takes me away from the epic content, sorry :(

I was very torn between drybrushing and using contrast on this model...after watching this video I'm glad I went with drybrusing, nothing against the skill you have...it's just drybrusing gave me the look I imagined.
Hey, Ashley, thanks for the question! You'll notice I'm choosing to use a much larger brush for the contrast step, large brushes are more resilient, I do however have a specific brush or two which I use for heavy tasks (size3 + size5). I take care of them, though, they're rinsed thoroughly, and cleaned after, Kolinsky is the price it is because of quality, but also resilience, so with good care, your brushes can last for a very long time! Any more questions, please let us know in another comment (not in a reply, UA-cam isn't good for conversation notifications!).
I have ran out of about 3 non-contrast/wash paints in the last 5 years, they're at more risk of drying out than being wasted by the nanolitre in my palette! 😅

OK now just mixing in screaming skull to each of the contrasts you used to do all your highlights is mind blowing, I have to give it a try.
You absolutely do! There's plenty of other paints it will work with, too!
I don't find your glass with the sponge in. I don't know if it's your cration
Hey buddy, it is our creation :).
store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing
It's the little wooden pot in every brush set, and available separately 'dampening pad'.
Any questions let us know in another comment, we ship worldwide :)
Wonderful result, beyond my skills I think.👏👏
Nono! Give it a go, you may surprise yourself :)
Did you ever paint up Karazai in a video, if not, do you plan to any time soon? I've just built him and going to practice on this bust first.
Hey man, not the entire thing, but if you check our latest Instagram story you'll see 2 turquoise and an additional partial orange bust being worked on 😅. By the time I have done the 4th bust you would think I should have my method down for the big guy 😄
@@ArtisOpus brilliant, thanks. There are plenty of tutorials out there but yours are always the easiest to follow.
The Stormdrake also comes with an extra head
I followed Pete the Wargamer Vengorian Lord conversion and now have a large scale vampire 'bust'.
I'm texting Pete right now 😅 what a coincidence! 'It's like the Warhammer cinematic universe' :D
@@ArtisOpus nice! Would love to see your take on the vampire 'bust'.
Mine is still on the sprue and some inspiration would be awesome 😎🖖
love your work, inspirational !
and yes, eyes ... they are a real challenge
Thanks, buddy! Are you going to give it a go? :)
Always, buddy! Even larger :D
@@ArtisOpus really tempted, just need to find the model to purchase, hoping the last one on Amazon UK is available and not a database glitch
As far as texture mats I ordered the xl and got a med which they never fixed.
Hey buddy, did you contact support? We don't sell a medium - XL is A4, XXL is A3
@@ArtisOpus this is smaller than a piece of paper
Or as large
such a nice video I hate to see/listen to these videos when am at work because the thirst to paint goes up.
Let me just say the camera work when painting the eyes were quite impressive.
Cheers, my man!
Do you re-prime the DryBrush Palette with Black Paint from time to time?
Absolutely, frequently, it's my 'Fresh start' between projects, it's also very relaxing for the eyes, which is great!
As an added bonus, when testing paints you can test if they cover well over black :)
@@ArtisOpus Thank you, your time and content sharing is noted and appreciated.
I am wondering whats the humidity in your studio because its impossible for me to keep those paint out like that for more than 20 seconds before they are dry xD
Well, I'm from the UK so do have it fairly easy! A humidifier and dropping aircon can make a big difference though, depending where you're from
What brand is the titanium white you used for the dry brushing ?
Hey dude, it's Monument Hobbies 'Bold Titanium White' :)

@@ArtisOpus Thanks for the reply
I love your Paintjob with this Dragon, but the eyes your crazy but i love it :)
At least you guys got enjoyment from it 😅😅🥹
What brand and color name did you use for the metallic parts of the horns?
I knew someone would ask this! Recording issues plagues both busts, I will do a future video on this specifically though, as it worked so well.
Retributor
Reikland wash
Sepia wash (repeat to taste)
Retributor highlight, add silver to taste :)
Wait what? About 19min mark you mentioned a spray. What spray?
The one we describe at 4:10 buddy. It's still evident at this stage as we are using transparent paints :)
I have a question.
I’m painting something like a deep red and it already has a basecoat of Khorne Red on it. What happens if I put a coat of flesh tearer contrast over that? Because it’s a translucent paint will it just darken the recess?
Freeguild General on Griffon. Loads of griffon heads.
gorgeous shelves! Where can these be purchased?
😂sorry. I know it😊
No worries :) for anyone else: www.kickstarter.com/projects/artis-opus/cabinets
The mindstealer sphiranx comes with a bust albeit a small one
Correct! Added :)
Dankhold troggoth is a great free bust.
Thanks, buddy!
I‘m searching for a quick to paint, cool looking, Tyranid sheme, maybe u got one ups your sleeves? 😇
This video's one? :D
Link me a picture reference of something you like (can be anything, any art/flower/whatever) and I'll scheme it for you.
It might be a stupid question, but how have you mounted it to the sprue?
@@manapause That does make sense, thanks.
With the seraphon carnasaur kit it can also be built as a troglodon, so you get either a carnosaur or trogolodon head spare,
Yes! Thank you, added
The cabinets look nice, but unfortunatly far too pricey for me at this time...
No worries, buddy, we only design products that are worth supporting long-term, we'll be supporting the lines ongoing, they're a truly special thing in person, we'll ensure that they have a wide retail release, so maybe you'll get to see one in a FLGS in the future.
What do you expect? Every Artis Opus product is extontionately expensive. His brush kits are the same price as a decent air brush for christ sake.
The shelves look stunning and id love to display all 2000 minis in them but im not a millionaire ...
might buy one just for the primarchs alone ....
😅 a problem we can all empathise with... Although if they are all painted I raise my hat to you, Sir!
Maybe just for the extra-shiny dudes, good call :)
How often do you clean your texture palette? I would imagine that it easily gathers lint and dust.
You can wipe it with a damp microfiber pre session, and I give mine a periodic re-prime fairly regularly (y)
I'm late to the party here but the zombie dragon kit comes with a similar head bust
Very good, and it's a badass one! 🥰
U the man Byron! 🔥🔥🍻👊🥰🐶
Cheers, buddy!
Amused that you use the sable brushes with contrast Paints.. 🤔 Wouldn't they ruin them?
Not if you use large (much more resilient) ones, and clean them!
Please do the giant axeman bust. Would love to see your method on contrast paints with him please. Esp the skin tone. Thanksn
Keep up the amazing work
Not as nice a bust as the dragon, but the carnosaur/troglodon kit you get an extra head and neck as well.
I've always thought that the trolololodon looks cool, but mostly the head, so maybe I should do another one, perhaps in a sea-dragon style...
Thanks :)
Nice! I love those dragons!
Thanks, buddy!
The Terrorgheist and Carnosaur kits give you 2 different heads you can assemble!
Yeah buddy, adding!
I guess the new daemon prince has a few extra heads
Good call, sir, I think 5spare and 6total!
Gryph hounds I think come with a spare head
Got me with the click bait but I’m glad you did!😂
Our pleasure to have you here :)! Coming next week 5 top tips, you WON'T BELIEVE#3! 😊
The Warcry mindstealer does it and it’s awesome!
Love your videos, products and everything, but I’m really struggling with the flashy snaps, zoom and things between things… making me a feel a bit sick and takes me away from the epic content, sorry :(
The zooming in and out is annoying I agree
Great call, this is different to the other Mindstealer (the original)?
Can you be more specific about the video critique please, bud? In the intro, throughout the video?
We're using close-ups more to help people see exactly what's going on with the painting, so more info on this is way better than less!
The changes we make and bring in to play are all with an effort to increase the quality of the education, and content for the viewers, so we always take special note of this type of thing.
Much appreciated
@@shauntaylor9251 Hey buddy, same as Stuart, can you let us know specifically when, please? Intro, during painting, etc.
@@ArtisOpus Mindstealer Sphiranx from warcry, great model with multiple head/neck options
A slow click and paste on the colours used would be helpful
Thanx Byron
Cheers, Chuck!
Have u been in contact with Ciara about teach her to drybrush like a professional Byron? I think she has a live stream in about 12 hours I gonna be there for probably the last half of it (will be sleeping still when it starts coz of time differences) 🥰🐶
I have not, dude, it's a hectic time here, I believe she's off holidaying for a bit, maybe we can do something on her return :)
@@ArtisOpus yeah I went to check her stream and saw she was on holidays 😞 hope ur doing ok bro! 👊🥰🐶
I mean, are those cabinets another repackaging of a different product like the Rosemary&co brushes or is it something remotely original? ;)
Fantástica 🎨🖌️🎨🖌️ del 🐲🐲 gracias 👍👍
Gracias! 🙏🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥
Why am I constantly advised not to let paint into the ferrule of my brush but then I see expert painters doing that very thing? Is it because you get the brushes for free??
Which timestamp, buddy? Generally I have a 'mixing brush' that does my scooping, but sometimes I forget while going fast, nobody is perfect!
What brush did you start with. It almost looks like a woman’ make up brush. (Forgive me I’m new to painting.) Great job!
Hey buddy, nothing needs forgiving! I am using the drybrushes I developed, which are definitely more shaped in this way, when compared to the old style 'flat' ones.
They are available here, if you have any questions please ask in another comment (not a reply, they get lost on youtube)
we ship worldwide: store.artis-opus.com/collections/series-d-drybrushing
Man this is giving me big inspiration to go paint some lizardmen!... I'd like to see an abomination of plastic made from the second option bits from kits like this. A kitbash bonanza! Bonus points for each different faction :P
😊 scales are forgiving! Weirdly you could sneak some other armours on them too, I think, perhaps Stormcast bits?
Screw it, dragon conversion, half carnosaur: go!
@@ArtisOpus good god yes.
The Skaven Verminlord is another one
I was very torn between drybrushing and using contrast on this model...after watching this video I'm glad I went with drybrusing, nothing against the skill you have...it's just drybrusing gave me the look I imagined.
The seraphon carnisaur and troglodon
Correct, good Sir!
Ah yes, the watercolour-gouache approach
This is absolutely fair TBH, why had I never thought of that?
Doesn’t that paint ruin the brushes ?😅
Hey, Ashley, thanks for the question!
You'll notice I'm choosing to use a much larger brush for the contrast step, large brushes are more resilient, I do however have a specific brush or two which I use for heavy tasks (size3 + size5).
I take care of them, though, they're rinsed thoroughly, and cleaned after, Kolinsky is the price it is because of quality, but also resilience, so with good care, your brushes can last for a very long time!
Any more questions, please let us know in another comment (not in a reply, UA-cam isn't good for conversation notifications!).
This guy must be working for paint companies, making us waste all our paint on some pallette
I have ran out of about 3 non-contrast/wash paints in the last 5 years, they're at more risk of drying out than being wasted by the nanolitre in my palette! 😅
