I don't know if its only me who noticed but Cory looks like he missed his anger management therapy session this week. It looks like fluval forced him to make a video about this canister filter.
I think the finer sponge and the white polishing pad in there are better than the coarse sponge… otherwise fiber detritus will be returning to the tank… and it’s supposed to clog up at some point, that means it’s doing it’s job…. Now, the prefilter at the intake is a good idea, although I use medium rather than coarse.
@@cram1nblaze brothers, you gotta realise how people use these. Nobody cleans them. It goes on months, sometimes years without a clean. If you wanna have it work for a month or two without greatly minimizing flow by clogging, you gotta use coarse media. And btw, what happens to aerobic bacteria when your fine filter sponge clogs? It dies
Well last week I cleaned my mechanical media in my canister after about 5-6 months. I have 3 grades of sponge in there and filter floss. Yeah it was pretty gross in there, but I never noticed the reduction in flow, I just cleaned it because I thought it's about time. The best way to set you filter is to have 2 grades of sponges - coarse and medium, then filter floss and the rest filled up with bio media.
Everyone should be doing what you did by default! If someone's dropping money on a canister and just uses it out of the box without looking. Well, you can't fix stupid. But why so disdainful? With a canister I can have a sponge filter, a poly-fil filter, tons of bio filtration media, and something like Seachem Purigen, all in one. Then I can add lily pipes to adjust my flow or even add a surface skimmer on my inflow. Helping keep my expensive aquascape clean and pretty. They don't have to be everyone's solution in order to be a good idea.
Another way to optimize them is to get rid of that sponge cage and just stack a bunch of coarse sponge on that side. I have an old 305 and that's what I did, replaced it with a stack of coarse Aqua Clear sponge blocks cut to size. Every inch of the available space in mine is filled with media. The 305 has 3 of those baskets and 2 of mine are filled with bio-rings and the last has the filter media for a HOB that I use in my quarantine tank.
I used to use HOB for my aquarium, but no matter which brand, and did the proper maintenance, but they always kept dying on me within the first 6 months. I now have a fluval 207 and I have had no issues whatsoever.
Can't help but feel like Fluval reminded Cory about the dreaded canister filter they sent him for free a year ago and perhaps some pressure was applied for him to talk about it lol! In any case, I do have 2 of these filters I have yet to set up (came with the F35 and the F90 aquariums) so this was a useful video for me. Cory, I will hotrod these filters and purchasing YOUR coarse sponges. Thank you!
Never put the fine pad above your bio media it will trap all the muck in your bio media when it’s clogged. So I recommend not taking his recommendations of putting it towards the top when the filter filters from bottom up. If it filtered from top down that’s different
You love the canister really Cory 😉 I love sponge filters on all my tanks to be honest, but I've invested in a 307 for my 350L tank and it has saved my arse as my hornwort decided to die off and make my main display tank look horrid, I also have some big pooper fishes in there, so I think a power filter was needed! Haha
Although when using fresh biologicl media, it would be useful to place a very fine filter media at the bottom tray until the bio media gets colonized, so that the pores don't get clogged up before the bacteria settle in.
I have that very filter - thanks so much for this video. It comes with no instructions as to why things are where they are or what would actually be best. I knew I could count on you to fill me in. Thanks!
😂😂😂 this was the first video from Cory and Aquarium Co-op that I ever saw, I remember thinking..this dude seems way too angry 😂😂. A year or so later and im a NERM.
Some very good tips again Cory. As soon as I can get my fish room built I will be buying a couple of bigger tanks that I’ll run canisters on, so these tips will be put to good use.👍🏻
This is good filter, good design, but is freakin noisy! Ive had Jbl canister filter, Eheim ( ive got it now) and Fluval 107 and the 107 is by far the loudest ! And they say its 25% quieter o_O .Cant imagine what it was like before.... You can barely hear Eheim or JBL, but i can hear my fluval 4 meters away.. Anyone got the same problem ?
I agree canister filters are a waste...I only have one because I bought it 15yrs ago(5yrs actual run time) and it still works. Thanks for another enjoyable video. 👍😁👍
I’m considering the Fluval 307 for my 20+ year old red eared slider turtle. After watching your informative video, I’ll stock the canisters, starting for the bottom, course sponge with bio rings, then the remaining two canisters with bio rings. Also, please recommend a decent heater for my turtle. Thanks!
Hey need advice with my 307 set up. Want to get clear water and get rid of particles. My set up at the moment is Purigen O rings Orings Polishing pad Coarse sponge Should i remove the middle tray of orings and replace with poly fil? Want to mention my tank has been up and running for less then 3-4 months. I do have 2 sponge filters running and a very tiny one just incase i have to medicate .
Why would you put very coarse sponge after the prefilter sponges? Your not going to catch any debris with the sponge because the prefilter will have caught everything already that size.(in theory) if your not going to run a polish pad or a fine sponge in the bottom tray bio media which has a high surface area greater then the sponge is a better option.
lol I scrolled through so many comments looking for one that confirmed my exact thoughts. The black sponge is for bacteria growth only, the surface area is designed for it. It goes after the pre-filters and the quick-clear microparticle pad. So water hits the course sponge first, the finer one second and the finest one last. Then it moves through the biological media (black sponge with extra surface area and ceramic rings) and finally the chemical filtration if you have any.
You needed the finer sponge as the last sponge the water touches before the bio media to prevent solid things in the water getting through and clogging your bio media, making it not work well at all.
Fluval user here..had 306 leaking after a while-came with the tank. Bought 407 ,most advanced, silent and shit. Start leaking after 6 months, used silicone-based grease all the time and sponge prefilter at the intake. Cleaned only 3 times in 6 months. Had an Aquasky Fluval, after 13 months lights were flickering, after another week no power to the lights. Took apart the lights, inside corrosion on the Bluetooth module . Had to solder connection directly to the led board, so all the LEDs would come on simultaneously. Reseal it after that. Bought an led dimmer as well. Previously i wrote to Fluval,i posted a comment on their Fluval Aquasky video on youtube, comment deleted by Fluval team.
I currently have an overstocked african tank. I have 2 tidal 75s and a 307 on 40 breeder. Overkill but i have constant debris or maybe sand from them digging in the water. Wouldnt removing the fine pads catch less of debris in the water?
Companies don't want to make good products, they want to make profits. Testing to make something better costs money, doing nothing makes money for them.
I'd say for "2020 technology" , using the Fluval with the plastic wrap still on is pretty much accurate. 😂 But I think the Oase Biomaster Thermo line comes as close to the 'best' canisters can be right now.
They also try to meat price points. Its why they give you all sponges and not decent bio media. There are so many products that would actually be good of they did just one or two things differently. Most of which would cost very little, but would make huge differences.
@@AquariumCoop I understand your point of view. That being said, you have changed sponge filters and now they are one of the best out there. Why not with canisters.. but with another company sharing costs.
@@Hayato234 I have one and is OK. What I like, heater in the filter, this should be standard, one of the reasons for using a canister filter is to have more space in the aquarium or around it, prefilter cleaning is eaaasy and reduce maintenance a lot and the price is OK. What I do not like is that you can hear it, not noisy but low background noise, the good part is you hear it when is something wrong. There should be a way to control the flow electronically not via the mechanical drive, at least the classical 10 min feed pause. What I do not like in general for canister filters is missing an extra inlet/outlet for water change. Decoupling of the tubes for water is fantastic for taking out the filter for cleaning, why the hell they do not do the same for the electrical connections to the pump and heating? Every time I take it out I need to dig for taking out the cables out of sockets. One reason I like canister filters is you can put inline CO2 difuser and UV sterilizer.
Did you look into how the water actually flows in the filter? I do not have experience about this filter, but usually the placement of media is ass backwards in the canisters by default, and the mechanical filtration is done last. This leads to clogged bio media making it less efficient. Instead the filter sponges should be the first thing the water hits, in this order: coarse, medium, fine. And then the actual biomedia (whatever one chooses) that takes care of the nitrites and depending on the media, some nitrates too.
@@TheBeebop420 No it is not. The 407 was on sale at Petsmart so I got it cheap. Having that size filter on my talk means I hardly have to do water changes or clean the filters.

yeah very bad advice right there to replace the stock egg crate sponge with a plain super course pad. Even worse advice is removing the polishing pad.
Yup . Then again that’s probably why he doesn’t like fluvial canisters . He’s using them wrong .

Actually I've had aquariums for the last 45 years, but you can teach a old dog new tricks! Amazing!
I don't know. I really love these filters. They are so simple to set up, easy to clean, parts can easily be ordered if something does break.
