No I don’t know i don’t know it’s gonna Fagan killing the band just for one song does the video on UA-cam where they someone added it it and did it normally a poor job it was stupid but what they were trying to do every time

There’s nothing that would ever make me not love Steely Dan, but their performance in this video is pretty sloppy, and disappointing. Brian May is a great guitar player, with his unique, awesome tone - which became a signature for Queen - but neither his playing or tone works at all here. RIP to the late Walter Becker, who was a great rhythm guitar player…but his constant “noodling” of random lead riffs over top of Fagan’s lead vocals is distracting. Neither May or Becker were able to capture even a hint of Denny Dias’ incredibly playing or tone on the original version… Fagan’s vocal is lackluster, he’s just sorta phoning it in… And, the song’s feel seems to meander all over the place, lacking definition in groove and pocket. In short, they did everything here that Steely Dan was famous for NEVER doing. IMO.
I agree, particularly about Brian's playing here. This just isn't his wheelhouse. You're not gonna find a bigger Brian Mayniac than me, but I am sober minded enough to know when I'm seeing him NOT in his element. Brian's a great writer and arguably a creative genius. And contrary to many people's opinions' he's also a very good player technically. Anyone who wishes to challenge that should try to play the REAL solo from Hammer to Fall--the album version. But Brian is not much of a jammer. I honestly don't think he had any real idea what he was going to play other than to feel his way around. It was painful when it aired, and it's painful more than two decades later I'm sad to say.
@@GrantSchinto I think Brian's just not a great improviser. He's the kind of guy that would sit down and meticulously compose every single note of a solo.
Glad to see your comment. Denny was fundamental to Steely in so many ways. I've long been convinced that despite the scads of legendary "strangers who passed through the door", their homeboy Denny was the best musician.
I had this awful dream that a very bad Steely Dan were on stage with Brian May. No one had practiced and it sounded shit. Fuckin weird dreams arnt they?
It wasn’t actually that bad. You have to consider that they’re old, also this song is matured for them as they’ve been playing it for decades at this point, so they play it differently
Not a great performance by anyone here, truthfully, and my opinion hasn't changed from when I first saw it. You can constantly hear guys changing to the wrong chords/notes too early (Seems like Paul Schafer's the only one aware of the arrangement), Fagan's straining to hit notes, and Brian sounds way too cautious and conservative.
I'm such a huge fan of Steely Dan and of Queen and Brian May. Does this sound good? Not at all. But I love that, they couldn't care less and it shows, so it's like a big f you to the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame.
Truth is, though Brian's musical style is so different from The Dan, he coped admirably. The lassitude that Donald & Walter sometimes emit in live performance almost makes it sound disinterested like a hotel lounge group. They cannot control the live sound in the way they do intrinsically in the studio & I feel they are almost always unhappy with their band performance. They are still kings of what they do, though.
A few years ago a cat got hit by a car in front of my house .... She ran into the bushes & cried all night .... It sounded like this performance ..... Sorry Donald !!!
@@jml-rj5re heh. i loved allan and founded his official facebook group, but he didn't often follow the chord either, lol...in fact, when i saw him in 2010 , he blew chunks on thesimple song 'fred', he literally apologized to me and my roomie (we were 5 feet away from him) DURING his solo. RIP!
Yes. Paul couldn't help but take the center of attention and act like a jackass. About the last thing you need in the middle of a progression when you're trying to find the 1 or the harmony is a bald monkey waving his hands in your face. What a pro.
What appeared virtuosic as a young struggling guitarist now look more a matter of familiarity. Do others have a similar experience, or is this just more of the bag of illusions we cling to as we get older? The misques here are obvious to the most pedestrian, fun nonetheless, big fan of all involved.
My favourite band of all time getting it very wrong big time! Awful guitarring by Becker (and May), dreadful vocal by Fagen. Perhaps that's why their live shows later went on to become clinically faultless but possibly lacking the fun element (Drew Zing, Wayne Krantz shows excluded from that comment)
Who on earth arranged those horn parts? That weird harmonic swell in the seventh bar of the verse sounds like they're getting to the chorus early. That's confusing as hell.
Looks and Sounds like a meddlesome composition from Paul Schaeffer and his band of misfits. I suspect Brian, Donald and Walter are compromising their performance for the fans. Broadway meets classic rock.
Should have used the Steely Dan band and not a bunch of unsympathetic house-band guys. And Brian May isn’t a total disaster, but he got a bit lost in the chord changes which is easy to do when you play along with Steely Dan, so dude… rehearse more.
I see where his head was at with the tasty blues riffs but it wasn’t executed properly. Clearly he didn’t rehearse… Would’ve been awesome if he did because I usually love May’s feel
I always say, REGARDLESS of what you may read from Wikipedia or any other source, Donald Fagan is NOT the singer on the original version of this song. It's David Palmer!!! The version we all know and love from the album is David Palmer!! Fagan has tried for years to remove David from any affiliation of this song. But as you can tell, Donald is horrible on vocals
Paul Shaffer made me cringe - so embarrassing - he must have been on everyone's nerves - how can they focus on playing with that clown running around in everyone's face ? what was the point of it ? he must be insecure .... Brian May should have been left out of it - his "solo" was another ruining factor ... in the absence of David Palmer, i'll tolerate Fagen's vocal ( but i'm assuming one of the female backup singers just couldn't pull it off at rehearsal - if they even had one rehearsal)
Seems very discombobulated, upside down, random instrument noise and Brian obviously doesn't fit here but Walter Becker seems like he is not happy at all

Why was Pitbull running around onstage waving his arms and pointing at musicians?

a great collaboration if its a birthday bash but if you have Becker you dont need anyone else..RIP Mr.Walter Becker
Agreed 💯
I'm Not at all convinced the other musicians have ever heard the song before
I think you nailed it. In the case of Brian May anyway. He's the only one I was really paying attention to anyway, LOL.
Brian’s solo is discordant
He can't play w/ jazzers
😢
Walter Becker’s reaction at 04:35 says it all
i don't't see his reaction, he looks expressionless to me, but god knows he woulda done waaaaaay better on that solo, he was so tasteful! RIP
I see what you mean.
Where is the reaction? 🤔😀

No no no please...
Love Paul Schaeffer, love Steely Dan, love Brian May.... but this so didn't work at all

I've always thought Queen was a very overrated group hiding behind a talented singer. Thanks to this video, I know it's true.
Brian May sounds like crap like he's never heard the song. It was like he was lost. smdh 🤣
The greatest honour of Brian May's career at the Waldorf Astoria hotel.

Sounds like Donald Fagan wasn't even putting any kind of effort in his singing. All his vocals sounded too "open mouthed" if you get the picture.
If you were in the audience you would have loved it !!!!
Who on earth arranged those horn parts? That weird harmonic swell in the seventh bar of the verse sounds like they're getting to the chorus early. That's confusing as hell.

Good thing Paul Schaffer was there. masterful .
Steely Dan and Sir Brian May on the same stage!

Listen guys, this is live playing, in the moment, good or bad its worth more than any studio recording.
Such a strange collab. It's like he's trying to play in the Steely Dan vein but doesn't cut it. How did it come about?
Not the best performance....
He tried to pull it off but I don't think it worked.

Way better than i would have done. 😊
You are correct love ya Brian but facts are facts
wtf where they thinking. Walter Becker could have handled that.
Ah.. back in the days when AI was still in its infancy. I bet Brian never was there at the scene… and IF he was… OMG!
