How to: Remove the Air Intake Manifold E46 M3 S54 MANUAL AND SMG

    Hey everyone, we are installing some Dinan Throttle bodies, performing the much needed coolant system revival, and installing a new starter which has began to fail. All these tasks require the Air intake manifold to be removed from the S54 engine. There are many hoses, lines, and mounting points that will need to be disconnected in order to remove it.
    Additionaly, the SMG transmission has a few extra steps to pay attention to in order to avoid making a mess.
    This is a good time to replace worn out parts whether it be an aribox, air filter, etc look below for the parts to consider.
    A simple K and N air filter or performance intake is a good first modification when you install your manifold later, we recommend the CSL air intake; which is often a bit pricey.
    For those interested in the CSL airbox but the price is too high. The new turner motorsport CSL airbox is on its way, for one half the price but same performance! This is what we are looking to do.

    Do you have to bleed the smg pump after removal and filling it back up? Heard it's gravity fed and shouldn't have to if air doesn't get in the lines. Wanna know what you did. Thanks

      Mark T happy new year! We have had a lot of life keeping us from getting editing done! But we are going to be back at it now. Part throttle isn’t crisp? Is it not revving up with your pedal? Any other symptoms that you notice?

      @@FatboysGarage well I've done all the basics I know I do not have any coil pack alternator battery clutch issues but there's definitely hesitation in my part throttle this is an SMG and when I'm keeping it in neutral stepping on the gas there is a dead spot in revving in idle I'm about to change my fuel pump 92 k I have issues with power and in extreme cold under 40 I'm here in Florida LOL I've been getting stalls in the morning when I drop down the second gear otherwise runs better but I'm still lost in 2 MPG less I have owned this car for the last four years and it never has gotten less than 19 City so needless to say this car is maintained meticulously and once I do the fuel pump and also I'm changing the timing chain tensioner and it tapping when cold I'm off to a Dyno tune to investigate other intermittent any thoughts will be completely appreciated thank you for your time !

      @@markt9438 A few thoughts. When my VANOS first went bad, it had similar symptoms, it stumbled all over itself, it didn't perform well and gas mileage decrease, and had a tap like you describe. I bet when you change that timing chain tensioner you find it broken. Another common issue with throttle behaving like that is with the throttle actuator, idle control valve, and throttle position sensors. When installing these parts new they must be synced together; unfortunately it is not plug and play. Check out this link, you may find some info:

      @@FatboysGarage Thx will check ! Did a recent bullet proof on vanos like you have and tensioner is only 10 k old and taps on start up cold ! have no codes and this is intermittent ! but for now need to change timing chain tensioner and fuel pump going from there ! Thx again

      yes, i see the link i had in the description for individual clamps no longer works. If you want a full kit that is OEM style the link in description works. I will find the individual clamps and post in the morning. Do you want oem oetiker clamps?
