Thank you so much for making this video. I’m deeply touched by how much energy and time you are willing to spend on making this video not only interesting but also profound and illuminating. Ever since I watched spirited away the first time when I was a kid, I’ve been so mysteriously mesmerized by the scene where Chihiro sat on the train and looking outside the window. I think about the scene whenever I can’t fall asleep to calm myself down. I never knew why. I thought it might be the music and the picture. But you gave me a really good explanation. The serenity and calmness came from chihiro’s growth through out the movie, from being panicky and scared in the beginning, to being calm and finding her place and knowing her role in the end. I love the comparison between this scene and the eating rice ball crying scene. I guess I felt like the eating rice ball crying Chihiro for very long and unconsciously yearned to become the one who can accept who she is and where she is at. Your analysis of the scene made me love this movie even more. I sang いつも何度もでも to my daughter from the day she’s born to get her to sleep. Now I’m getting to know why. Thank you again for your work.

Thank you for this truly wonderful exploration of the Ghibli canon, which delves so much deeper than most of the quite surface-level "tier ranking" style videos on UA-cam. Those videos have their merits, but I'm personally a bigger fan of this kind of deep analysis. Your editing was excellent and your script and commentary on each film was clearly heartfelt and deeply considered. I loved how you strove to examine the chief themes of each film, how you found positive things to say about all but the bottom few (which are deserving of criticism) and how you managed to draw together the personal/creative narratives of both Miyazaki and Takahata through their respective film canons. I cried during the Grave of the Fireflies bit. That movie, gosh. Just hearing you describe it was too much.
I wanted to make special note of what you said about how it is so worth it to explore the hidden gems of the catalog because you might just find your own personal favorite film among the lesser-known movies. I found this to be very true for myself as Whisper of the Heart is that special personal favorite for me. I also commend you for picking something other than (the usually default) Spirited Away for the number one spot. It's a masterpiece but not the only one Miyazaki made and I'm glad to see that recognized. Also pleased to see how high you placed Arrietty!
I watched this video in three segments when I could and I'm so glad I took the time to do so. You deserve so many more views. Please keep up the great work. This is the kind of long-form content that UA-cam alone can provide in an increasingly quick fix content culture. Thank you!

Thank you so much for such a measured response. I'm honestly not sure how to convey my gratitude but I hope you know how much I truly appreciate you taking the time, both to watch the review and to leave this comment. It means a lot seeing you recognize and acknowledge what I was striving for and I never once imagined that part of my commentary could move somebody to tears so that one's still processing for me!
Also always glad to see another fan of both Arrietty and Whisper of the Heart, and I hope if one day you catch Only Yesterday (if you haven't already) then it'll be to your tastes in a similar fashion.
At any rate, I plan to keep going so I suppose I'll see you on the next one! Thank you once again, and do let me know if there are any other franchises you'd love to see!

Finally someone who appreciates Arrietty’s beauty, most reviews i see about it only mention negative aspects about it and from what I’ve heard a lot of people who watched it found it boring. Its nice to see more people who also like the movie, great reviews!

Thank you so much! And likewise, I often see Arrietty dismissed as slow or ordinary, but I was hooked from the beginning so I figure I should give movies like that more of a shout-out.

  • @JohanneAndromeda
    @JohanneAndromeda 10 місяців тому +3

Your reviews are just enough funny to keep people hooked but not too much that it reduces the seriousness of the project as a whole and with just the right amount of depth in undercurrent detail to make the viewer think more in-depth about the movies than maybe they had previously.
Whilst the entirety of your Howls Moving Castle review was humorous to the point of danger (had I been drinking anything during it), I must admit to being a little bit biased for that one. It was my first ever Ghibli movie, so it holds a special place in my heart, even with it being, how did you put it?

I am from Japan and although I watched Only Yesterday many, many years ago, it is the one that I refer back to the most. I also think the artwork is the most beautiful of Studio Ghibli works. Like Taeko, I find myself tethered to younger versions of myself. This, I find both bothersome and encouraging, as you are you no matter how much you age.

    Personal favorites:
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (First exposure to Ghibli, loved the epic scale, a little rough around the edges but I enjoyed the "raw" feeling, well written female protagonist, interesting side characters, loved the plot and environmental messages)
Spirited Away (Magical film, it deserves all the praise, is not overhyped)
Howl's Moving Castle (Plot at times is a bit messy but I enjoyed the fantastical elements, visually very well done and creative)
    Great:
Castle in the Sky (Just a fun adventure film, only problem I have with it is the two main characters are a little undeveloped and at times the pace is a bit rushed)
Princess Mononoke (Fleshed out some ideas from Nausicaä, characters are very well written and interesting, probably the most violent out of all the Ghibli films had some more disturbing images which is why I knocked it down one peg-not pleasant to the eyes)
    Good movie:
My Neighbor Totoro (Very campy movie. I'd call it a "vibe" film. Good film to watch on a rainy day to cheer you up. Innocent feeling)
Kiki's Delivery Service (Fun film about growing up and venturing out on your own. I don't have much to say about this one. Has a simple story)
Porco Rosso (Plane sequences were very fun to watch, underwhelming third act, and doesn't have the most likable protagonist)
The Cat Returns (Probably had the most fun with this film, believe it or not, thoroughly enjoyed this one, transported to another world)
Ponyo (Liam Neeson did a wonderful job voice acting as the father, visually this one really stands out, I do see the influence of Little Mermaid)
Good movie but not my cup of tea:
Only Yesterday (I don't like to look back at my childhood memories but I think this one depends on where you are in life)
Whisper of the Heart (Probably my favorite of the "slice of life" films they've done, it's a feel-good movie about going after your dreams, very inspirational)
The Wind Rises (It's a very well done film, kind of a sad tragic film in a way, contains my least favorite scene of their whole filmography-blood gushing out. I felt a little depressed after watching this one. Interesting dilemma of finding/doing your purpose but having that role have destructive elements)
When Marnie was There (Probably one of the weirder films they've done. I enjoyed the plot twist ending. I wasn't a fan of how they depicted their relationship before the plot twist. It was a little too intimate for me)
    Meh:
My Neighbors the Yamadas (It's a fine film just didn't really do anything for me)
Arrietty (It's a well-done film, and it's visually striking I just wasn't invested in the smaller-scale story. This is probably the blandest film they've done)
From Up on Poppy Hill (Very beautiful visually, didn't like the potential incest plotline)
Gets too much hate but I was entertained:
Tales from Earthsea (Might be their worst film but I was laughing at how bad it was so it's kind of like The Room. The villain looked like Noodle from Gorillaz so that's a plus)
Earwig and the Witch (This film is not as bad as people say it is. I wish they fleshed out the ending more, it just ended abruptly but if you understand what it's based on it's a pretty good adaptation because the author died before they could finish it)
Bad movie would not rewatch/I did not like:
Ocean Waves (Longest 70 minutes of my life, did not have likable characters and I just didn't care about the teen drama/love triangle)
Pom Poko (I did not like this film. It was visually weird at times and the tone was all over the place. Might be my least favorite film of theirs)
The Tale of the Princess Kugaya (I did not connect with the protagonist/message of the film. A little too out there for me)
    One-Time Viewing Experience
Grave of the Fireflies (This movie is very well made and I appreciate it but it's way too depressing for me to rewatch)

@@gdplayer8768 Earwig is an abomination. But you know Ghibli will never make that kind of shit again. Cat Returns is a Ghibli movie for sure, but a really bad one. It's like an awful version of what Ghibli could be. An alternative dimension where Studio Ghibli makes retarded films like Cat Returns.
      Earwig is easier to ignore.
