    I bought one a year ago. It was doing fine, but then started to die back. I d decide to wash away all the soil and put it in water. It’s doing much better now. It pretty much lives in the water now. I tried some Miracle Grow, but that just turned the water green and produced a lot of algie.

    I Have a dumb cane plant I got from a shop that was closing down and it was infested with aphids, it was very tierd and I took care of the aphids easy enough, idk if maybe this plant is more sensitive to aphids and the solution to kill them or if its something else, but I've tryed alot, firstly I repoted him into a slightly larger pot and i added perlite but i used old reclaimed soil i had that had bark in it and mainly only grew seedlings into sprouts then I had him in my plant nursery with uv and heat normally used in spring for seedlings but I used it as a quarantine cause I have other plants I don't want to get aphids just incase, but I thought I was underwatering him and cause although after aphids treatment it started to perk up and look better even geting more growth slowly one by one the leaves yellowed and browned going crispy at the ends of them, so I tryed wattering him more and them bam new growth goes brown and mushy, and I cut the mushy leaves off the crispy ones are still there as they are the only open leaves he has and there is 1 closed leaf as of rn and I've brought him into my room cause of my last point my mum brought attention to me that it might be geting uv burnt and idk if that's the case, before I brought him in I repotted him removing large chunks of bark from the new soil/compost I have and adding perlite into it again, forgot to say when I saw the plant going crispy I also got a liquid fertiliser for it and the first 2 times I did it a week appart but then I thought, it's winter I should probably do it 2 weeks apart I am based in the UK and I'm just wondering if there is anything else I should try or if I just now need to play the waiting game now that it's inside the house on a windowsill that in spring and summer get alot of sun after midday then autumn and winter get most sun in the morning to midday, sorry if my wording is not great and I'll try and reword anything if need be I just realy wanna Try and help this plant cause they are realy pretty

    I have one that I've had for over a year, it was a gift to me. it's about a 1.5 ft tall. Lately it cannot stand up on it's own, I have it propped up on a shelf. Is there a certain type of pot I should transplant it to? Or should I I propagate it?

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  2 роки тому

      Lizzy Shanika, Dumbcanes do tend to have a had time standing sometimes when they get taller. Have you tried staking the plant? You could put a stake on both sides of the plant and tie from one side to the other. As for type of pot, it's good to use a glazed ceramic pot, as they are heavier than plastic and will help hold the plant up better. Look for one that is a bit deeper, to allow for holding the plant up, but ensure that the roots will be filing the pot by 2/3 and the remainder is soil. You don't want a little bit of roots in a really big pot. You could also propagate the plant, but I'd try these other tactics first. Lastly, is the base of the plant where the crown is firm? If it is squishy at the base of the plant at the soil, it could be crown rot, so something to also check.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  4 роки тому +1

      Lindsey Hofman, The mishappen foliage comes from the plant not getting sufficient light. Plants bend and twist and reach towards any available light they can get, but it can deform them in the process. The stems likely won't start growing straight, unfortunately. Your best bet is to start removing stalks one at a time and wait in between for new stems to start growing. If you give the plant good lighting, those new stems will grow straight. Let me know if you have any more questions about this!

If it just needs to be repotted and hasn't shown any signs of root rot, you can simply repot in new soil without using and peroxide. • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  5 років тому +1

      Hi MsANEWU, Thanks for watching! When leaves die and grow small that is an indication of the soil being too wet, and there being too much soil. If you repot in a smaller pot that has excellent drainage, the plant will do much better. You want the plant/pot combination to be 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot. Here is a video about that showing you what that looks like. ua-cam.com/video/NXy8W8rz-Ec/v-deo.html

    I have another question I bought a begonia a double flowered one on clearance and I need some help to revive it it was sitting in the sun and the leaves are brown on the edges but down towards the bottom it looks green I don’t know whether I should cut it back hard to the green let it go and see if it will grow a little bit before I cut it back or what I should do. Look forward to your answer.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  5 років тому

      Christina Hutchison, Whenever a plant has been stressed by incorrect growing climate or care, it's often a good idea to wait and let it grow in the correct environment for a little while, and with the proper care. Cutting it back is also stressful for it. Once it has acclimated for a couple of weeks, then you can cut it back. Although I would only cut it back at that point by 20-30 percent. So remove the worst parts. Then wait for it to put on some more green before removing other parts. It wouldn't necessarily kill the plant if you cut it way back, but the stress of doing so will mean that it'll take quite awhile to grow again. Are you growing it indoors or out? Let me know if you have more questions.

    Just a small footnote, because of monoculturing they seem to not be as hardy as they used to be before that method of tissue culturing or cut propogations, over the years I have bought these plants each year, and recently have noticed that most plants dont make it a year, I am very particular when it comes to plant care. I also suspect they are dropping some kind of bloomer fertilize at local stores, which makes them really lush green up front, but makes them falter quicker from overgrowth. -> I have found that my plants do best with slow release fertilizers, and using magnesium supplementations make the plants boost in growth, I do believe most potting soils lack magnesium and even most far,m lands.
    PS> I have used soil from forest floor around areas where tree leaves have broken down over the years, making a loomy soil, really works very well, which is like your acid your adding I imagine. I have a few friends who have fish tanks, they use the water from those fresh water tanks and filter with UV light to water plants with, they also have great success in growing these plants.
    However I have had a deal where I lost about half my plants the last year do to some disease causing ROT from the top down. I was wondering if you have ever seen that issue, where the roots look healthy but the top turns to mush. I am suprised because I cant find many sources for issues about this but I did come by an article that said Hosta viruses and some tomatoe virus stems turned very similiar do to not sterile mediums of cloning. I don't clone my plants, or anything of the likes, but I did buy those particular ones from the same place, and had repotted them all in different areas, so I had cleaned those plants very well. I guess my question is what caused them to die, I am in process of trying to save a few of them I actually removed the tops and removed the stems from the soil, and took the rooted bottoms to a new location and repotted, now the plant is reviving and growing new leaves, but I am very frustrated because I am not sure will this problem return over and over or is it something else? I always bleach my cutters, and dry before I cut, and never trade cuttings from pot to pot, mainly I am concerned if it is a virus should I just destroy those plants and pots, I do not want this spreading, but I had about 8 different pots develop this condition, within a 3 month period, my first thought was maybe some kind of bugs, but nothing around soil, soil is not wet as I dont drown my plants in water. Also since I fertilize all my plants the same way I ruled out that as the issue, since my other 30 are fine. I would appreciate any suggestions, also is it true that cuttings should be placed in water, or should I direct pot them to root?
    I was considering cutting my older plants to replace the newer ones that are dying, though will not reuse the same soil or planters. Appreciate your videos. :) Thanks.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  5 років тому +4

      Abbot Christian, Thanks for watching, and thanks for your comments and questions. I have noticed that the dieffenbachia cultivars are much weaker than year's past. I agree that they are loading them with fertilizers and growth hormones prior to selling them to green them up. This leads to the plants "detoxing" later and then faltering. Boosting the plants with these chemical fertilizers and growth hormones is akin to giving steroids to the plants and then the unsuspecting gardener gets them home and doesn't continue the process, and then the plants falter and may die.
      I agree that many plants do suffer from low magnesium. Epsom salts do work well for that issue, providing the pH is correct so the plant can absorb the calcium.
      Regarding your question about about the dieback in the plant itself first and not the soil, it seems to be acting like a Phytophthora species in its manner of attack. That could be coming from water or even if you have used soil from the ground. You do mention using forest floor soil, which is definitely rich in good bacterial growth and hence bioavailable nutrients, however, it could contain phytophthora species that could cause problems. There are more than 170 known species. (For instance, Phytophthora ramorum is a pathogen that causes sudden oak death in certain species of trees.) Each Phytophthora species affects certain species of plants. Have you had problems with certain species of plants? It sounds like your practices are good with bleaching your pruners, etc., and pots. So I would look to soil or water in terms of potential contaminants. Let me know if you have anymore questions or comments!

    What does it mean when there's water droplets 💦 on the leaves??

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  2 роки тому +1

      CHANN3L TH3SPIRIT, This can occur when the plant is transpiring. Transpiring is like human sweating. It is perfectly normal. It will occur more often after a plant has been watered. Transpiration humidifies the air for humans, making it easier to breath for us, and plants humidify each other when they transpire. My video that published today talks about the process, which occurs via the stomata. Stomata are breathing/sweating pores and where the moisture comes out. Here's today's video: ua-cam.com/video/4dGwcQS-6Xw/v-deo.html (This question would make a good video, so I'm putting it on my production list!)

      @HealthyHouseplants  5 років тому +2

      Kathy Frankenfield, Thanks for watching. The blooming is generally an indication that the plant is pretty mature and healthy. It does sound like it needs to be repotted. If you do really heavy pruning, you could shock it. It's best not to do more than 20 percent at a time. I'd suggest repotting in a slightly larger pot and pruning by no more than 20 percent when you do so. If you want the plant to stay in the same size pot, you can do that. Just adding new soil to the same size pot will help it. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

      Sara's Randomz, Thanks for watching! You want to keep dumbcanes slightly moist, but not soggy. So when the soil begins to dry out by at least half of what it was after being water the last time, it's time to water. You have to walk a fine line with these plants to not overwater them, yet not underwater them. That's why I suggest waiting until it's half as wet as it was the prior time. Let me know if you have anymore questions.

    • @HealthyHouseplants
      @HealthyHouseplants  5 років тому +2

      Bianca Bell, Thanks for watching. It sounds like a case of root rot. Dieffenbachia are susceptible. Yellowing leaves and the drooping leaves are a sign. Is the base of the main stem squishy near the soil? How wet was the soil before? And was the plant ever sitting in wetness for awhile? That can lead to the start of root rot. What sort of light is it in? They like bright light, and if they get a bit too wet and are in too low of light, they can also start root rot. Here is a video on how to spot root rot that I did: ua-cam.com/video/sMyrDAPaEBQ/v-deo.html. And then I just did another one on how to save a plant with root rot, if you determine it is root rot: ua-cam.com/video/inLZQZC_tes/v-deo.html. I bought my dieffenbachia from a nursery. A couple days after it came home, the leaves started turning yellow. It’s been a couple of weeks now and it’s still turning yellow. Wilted. Soft leaves. And now, brown spots.
    I watered it heavily the first time, thought I overwatered it so I repotted it. Didn’t work. So I moved it closer to bright indirect light. Still didn’t work. So I moved it outside where it’s really humid thinking it needed it. Still didn’t work. I just repotted it, the roots look completely fine! But the young leaves keep yellowing. When I cut them off, the stems turn mushy and fall off. I pruned it. Cut off the brown spots and moved it back inside. It’s growing and looks healthy but the leaves just keep yellowing.

      They don’t need too much! That’s the art- you don’t have to water as much with a self watering pot and also the leaves yellowing means she is eating herself for nutrients
