- Our Budd Slumbercoach is almost ready for production; we just need to beef up the orders to where they should be for such an exquisitely-detailed model. So Jason, Jordan and Josh are making their case once more, this time from on board a REAL Slumbercoach at the Illinois Railway Museum!

Hey, was expecting a scene with Jeremy opening a box of cereal (Rapid-O's 😉) and pulling out one of these beauty coaches, like an 80's cereal commercial! Would buy it in a heartbeat if it was in N scale for VIA Rail! Also, as a future passenger car collection set, I'd love to see the Rocky Mountaineer in HO/N scale! Cheers! 😎👍

We'll need to build open bottom frame bridges over dead flat reflective 'water' features that allow the underside of the coaches to be reflected upward toward the observer - hiding dim LEDs within the structure to illuminate the details. Then come up with a good reason to either stop the train on the bridge or move it so slowly across. 🤔 Challenge accepted.
Modern problems require modern solutions!

Hi all, I ordered mine (in Amtrak) months ago. I visited the slumber coach at the IRM during the amazing Rapido weekend. What an amazing crew. I met everyone but Jason and Janet who were delayed. Thank you so much for getting the E5 out of the barn. I rode the Zephyr twice and the Zephyr once. Wait, who shot twice once? Lol. Can’t wait for a car type that I rode back in the 90s on Amtrak on the Lake Shore Limited ❤

The underside does have a lot lot lot of accurate detail which makes the cars a bit pricey. If you do not plan to roll your trains down an embankment you might want to buy them to be displayed in a case with the underside shown.
We should make a custom upside down storage case!
I have mine on pre order with Lombard Hobbies. I may order another with a different name board for the NP NCL.
And yes, it would be great to see a tail Car , Observation car for the NCL someday. I and others would like to complete my NCL. Thanks for all you do for the Hobby. Dave

Jason, if tooling the HEP on the car isn't possible, can we get something in the poly bag to glue onto the end of the car. I can only speculate on how much this would improve orders but I would definitely order a second!
I wish we could, but we've already pretty much maxed out the tooling budget for these. I used to add my own HEP details (to my own HEP2 cars) using MU receptacles and styrene. -Jason

The prototypes really found a home on the Florida trains and I wish we had a modern equivalent. HO scale shall have to suffice. (I'll have to see which one's I rode in before my order.)
I have one on pre-order with Lombard. I really hope you guys get the orders you need. I am also really hoping you will do more of the North Coast Limited cars. One reason I model 1970-71 to do the the very brief BN version of the NCL and the Empire Builder. Product suggestion: I need more of the EB cars too.
I found out that Budd had designed 2 additional car types for 'The Canadian' back in 1954: a Parlor car to run Montreal-Ottawa & a Sleeper Dome with single berth rooms under the dome along with 4 sections & 4 Roomettes. CP decided not to order them.

2:40 aren't the rooms above and below each other fitted together to maximize space? If they were just alternating floor levels there wouldn't be a point, could all be on one level. What am i missing?

I know that my roads (ATSF) SP, UP) didn't own any of these, but did they travel to Los Angeles as a foreign road passenger car?
We haven't seen any info about them traveling to Los Angeles, but that's not to say it didn't happen.
Any plans to do the SF elcapitan cars?
Not planned at this time. Walthers has released many of the cars from the El Cap already so you may want to look out for those models.

I have a question if someone can answer. I'm going to model a SF Super Chief from Missouri to California. I road this train when I was 7 to visit my grand parents in California. Loved the trip. I'm not sure of what coaches would of been running at that time so would the slumber coach be part of that. From 1967-1970 on the Santa Fe running from Missouri to California.
the Santa Fe never had this car type. They only had first class sleepers, single level
The Santa Fe didn’t own any Budd Slumbercoaches, but they did have the “Indian” series of 24 duplex Pullman sleepers that looked somewhat similar.

I’m disappointed you didn’t show the interior of the real car and explain why they used the staggered windows and high seats.
to be able to use the dead space above main level rooms for roomettes. Other cars, first class types like CN's E-cars or CPR's Chateau cars. Your feet did not use the whole hight of the room, so the next, upper level compartment was half-way upstairs, and the upper room could be reached by a small staircase from the corridor.
We'll explore that in the next video!

As cool as the upcoming Slumbercoaches are, I'll say I'm more than a little bit disappointed that the appropriate HEP-era details for the later Amtrak versions aren't being done. That's been the main thing keeping me from reserving.
Considering how nuts Rapido usually goes over detail variations, this seems like a notable missed opportunity in my eyes.
While we would have liked to do the correct details for the HEP conversions, unfortunately the cost to tool the correct body and under frame would have exceeded the number of cars we could have sold. Sorry about that.
It's too pretty to derail! I'm going to put mine on a shelf. A boring old shelf. Might put some people in it & they can rest assured that they will be safe in that car.... for an eternity!

CP almost bought these, but it seems they cancelled the order and went with the rebuilt heavyweight U series sleepers instead.
