Some of us Americans have been hip to The Hip for 27 years.
They are one of the greatest bands ever. From anywhere. They are one of the most important bands for me personally in my life. And I think at Large..
I was lucky enough to see them in Columbus Ohio at the Newport Music Hall with 800 other people who knew who they were. It was a big surprise to me. Because I never found anybody that knew who they were other than me. In fact there are several people in several states that listen to The Tragically Hip because they know me. And my three oldest children are all tragically hip fans.
The final show from the tour last year after gourd announced that he had brain cancer. Was the single greatest rock show ever. Because they were brilliant and the emotion could not be calculated.
    Long Live The Tragically Hip
    Long Live Gord Downie!!

If you actually listen to the Hips lyrics you would understand they wrote about things from all over the world. Gord disliked being painted into the "Canadian" corner. Using the Hip as a nationalistic tool takes away from it.

Back in 95-96 my band was playing a show in the Florida panhandle, when the bartender at the club notices my Tragically Hip T-shirt. He says, "You're not going to believe this, but I just saw them at a club over in Pensacola." He said that hardly anyone there knew who they were, but HE knew who they were, and couldn't believe he stumbled into the club that night and saw his favorite band. Sure wish I would have been there.

The people that thumbs down this need to be taken out back. Surprisingly, after watching this I feel much better. What a horrible heart ache it was finding out about his passing. It’s amazing how close one can be to someone they have never met by the the music they put out. RIP Gord. We’ll miss you so.

First time I’ve see this. I became a Hip fan after moving to northern NY in 1991. I’d hear them on the radio as I drove to/from work. Wondered who this band is putting out great music I had never heard. Saw them play quite a few times over the years; last time in 2015 in Buffalo. Tried to go to the last show in Kingston but couldn’t get tickets. It was so sad knowing I’d never see them play again. End of the Hip era.

      @@edwardcharles990 Fiddler's Green:
One, two, three, four, one, two
      September seventeen
      For a girl I know it's Mother's Day
      Her son has gone alee
      -ee
And that's where he will stay
      Wind on the weathervane
      Is tearing blue eyes sailor-mean
As Falstaff sings a sorrowful refrain
For a boy in Fiddler's Green
      His tiny knotted heart
Well, I guess it never worked too good
      The timber tore apart
And the water gorged the wood
You can hear her whispered prayer
For men at masts that always lean
The same wind that moves her hair
Moves her boy through Fiddler's Green
      Oh, nothing's changed anyway
      Oh, nothing's changed anyway
      Oh, anytime today
      He doesn't know a soul
There's nowhere that he's really been
But he won't travel long alone
      No, not in Fiddler's Green
      Balloons all filled with rain
      As children's eyes turn sleepy-mean

      New Orleans is Sinking:
She loves me, she loves me not, she loves me, she loves me not...
      Alright
      Bourbon blues on the street
Loose and complete under skies so smoky blue green
      I can't forsake a Dixie dead-shake
So we danced the sidewalk clean
My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim
Colonel Tom, what's wrong? what's going on?
Can tie yourself up for a deal
      ?
He said, "Hey north you're south, shut your big mouth
You gotta do what you feel is real"
Ain't got no picture postcards, ain't got no souvenirs
My baby, she don't know me when I'm thinking bout those years
      Music break
Pale as a light bulb hanging on a wire
Sucking up to someone just to stoke the fire
Picking out the highlights of the scenery
Saw a little cloud that looked a little like me
I had my hands in the river, my feet back up on the banks
Looked up to the Lord above and said, "Hey, man thanks"
Sometimes I feel so good, I gotta scream
She said, "Gordie baby, I know exactly what you mean"
She said, she said, I swear to God she said
      Ahhhhhhhhh nooooooooo, noooooooo, yeah
      !
My memory is muddy, what's this river that I'm in?
New Orleans is sinking man and I don't wanna swim
      SWIM!

Under lockdown, in isolation and quarantined for 14 days up here in an underground gold mine here in Northern Ontario as we are dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19. Stumbled across this incredible post. Thank you for sharing. I was 15 in 1987 and was able to sneak in to a small bar in Thunder Bay to see the Hip live. And have been a devoted fan to our beloved Canadian band. This certainly evokes strong and heartfelt memories I have of our national treasure, The Tragically Hip. So fond the memories are. Uplifting yet so tragic he’s gone, but at this moment my heart is nearly complete as I watch this post. Thank you again.

Saw them life the 1st time in New York city at a small venue in 2000. There was maybe enough room for 200 people and I was front stage center. The entire crowd were all ex-pat Canadians such as myself. Except for one young couple from New Jersey who happen to have heard of the band and wanted to check them out. Best performance I ever attended. Gord did bring a banana on stage.
Peace to Gord, his family and friends.

Over the veil. After a glimpse, over the top... Underappreciated. Un-Inhibited. They are tragically hip in every sense of the phrase. Thank you to the band member families who made great sacrifices to support these artists who are "violent and original" in your work. Many tears shred in the final concerts. Hope your collective journey was rewarding.

Got to meet Gord after a show at Dallas City Limits on Day fir Night leg, I think. He was standing out by the bus and I was able to tell him thank you for the bands music and it helped me very much. He just kind of stared at me for a second then closed his eyes. Full of gratitude and completely drained from the intense show, he simply said “thanks, thank you”.

The Hip, historically speaking, were one of the great supporters of everything Canada. Also, a great band that evolved so well over the years and produced some great records. The band wrote the music in a collective manner; there was no single or dual writers like you see in most bands. Maybe one of the least pretencious bands you ever saw in interviews. Gord was so comfortable in his own skin, just being himself. This band could rock with the best of them- RIP Gord; condolences to your family and friends.
