I ate at one of the many Frisch's Big Boy restaurants- today where I live in a suburb of Dayton Ohio. I had a Big Boy platter. Big Boy is still my favorite place to eat. I'm 65 years old. My wife, three grown kids, and three granddaughters are well acquainted with their menu. Thanks for this video. It made my day!
Bob Wian demanded two things always at his restaurants: good food and good service. At the Glendale California drive in back in the 60s, the carhops moved like greased lightning. The cars would back up into a line out onto Colorado Blvd. just waiting to pull into a drivein spot. My Father who was always tight on his tipping, always left a good tip for these ladies because they truly earned it. Great memories !
The Original Bob's Drive-In Restaurant, was torn down for a strip mall. Lots of people tried protesting the demolition, but certain people didn't understand it's cultural significance. At least the second location in Burbank survived.
There was a Frisch's Big Boy where I lived in the early 1960s. As a little kid, our family rarely ate anywhere buy home, but when the parents would give me a Frisch's Big Boy (it might have been a kid's size), I was in ecstasy! To me, it was the best thing ever.
Most of them in northern California were Bob's, but on the trip to Tahoe for my brother's wedding in the 70s we stopped at a JR's along the way! My cousin had a Big Boy talking doll (that had no clothes on him at the time of our visit, haha!) and one of the expressions he said was: "Let's go on a picnic! I'll bring the pickles!"
Thanks for the happy memories. There was a Big Boy in Milwaukee, WI. Back in the 60's it was the cool place for my high school to hang out. Guys would show off their cars and cruise down 27th St. The food was great! I always ordered the platter that came with a "salad". It was simply a wedge of plain o'l iceberg lettuce with the best blue cheese dressing I have ever had in my 72 years. The strawberry pie was perfect. Saturday night was date night. It may be my favorite hamburger I ever had. Who ever thought of thousand island dressing on a burger. I've tried to duplicate it many times always failed.
I worked for Bobs Big Boy in Frederick Maryland as a server during the mid 80s. The Howard Johnsons in Frederick MD became a Bobs Big Boy. Both Bobs in Frederick closed and the one the building that used to be Howard Johnson’s was torn down
I grew up in Detroit in the 1950s and 1960s and got to eat at the Elias Brothers Big Boy once. As a college student in Orlando I got to be a waitress at a Frisch's Big Boy. Loved making the chocolate cake/ice cream desserts.
There was a local drive in that went by "big boy" back in my hometown of Lawrence, Kansas in the early 50's, but the "official" stores made them change the name. They became the "Big Buy" in about '53.
I grew up in Hazel Park and went to the Big Boy all the time. When my Grandparents came in to visit my Grandma had to go to Big Boy for the Slim Jim and Strawberry Pie. The Hazel Park restaurant closed but there is one in Warren that is great!
First Big Boy I saw was in Gatlinburg Tennessee in '67 while I was on vacation with my folks. If it wasn't for the statue I wouldn't remember the restaurant.
I really miss going here, they disappeared in FL, but for a short while in the early 2000's there was a store in the Maitland area. Sadly it didn't last long. I do order their tartar sauce online, they have the best!
There’s a Big Boy restaurant down the street from me. Had a Super Big Boy, onion rings, and a chocolate milk shake the other day. When I was done I took a five hour nap. Delicious 😂
There was one in Perrysburg Ohio. Found it shut down. Not because of the restaurant, was due to lack of employees. They couldn't get anyone to work. Last time I was there ) at the Perrysburg location), in June of 2021 they were still open. Pulled up and order 5 Big Boys. It took them over thirty minutes to receive my order. I received the same excuse, " we are short handed". The manager was nice and discounted my order. She told me the younger kids don't want to work anymore and they were paying $12.00 a hour. I just shook my head. Glad there are other locations in the Toledo area which are still open.
Yeah those were the days,. Go cruising or drag racing on a street called Telegraph, that was on the edge of Detroit, we had two Big Boys on that street, and for me it was like mandatory to be there on Fri or Sat night. you had to back your car into a spot next to the call box, get your order and check out the other muscle cars either pulling in or just passing through. Great burger and great times. Also never got a ticket .
When I was 12, we had this little place in South Ft Worth called "The Chuckwagon" (It was designed like a Conestoga). My favorite item was a pineapple milkshake with these little, multicolored plastic monkeys they would put on the straws 👍🇺🇸💥
Alex Shoenbaum opened a restaurant called Parkette in Charleston, WV and later renamed it Shoney's Big Boy. Shoney's were located throughout the Southern US.
Their was a (quite good) chain restaurant in Friedberg, FRG when I was there in the 1980s with the US Army. I friend of mine, from Clevland OH, used to say the place was a "Teutonic Bob's Big Boy."
ok, i just noticed something. the original recipe for any of the burgers has the cheese placed on the bottom but in some of the figures and statues, the cheese is placed beneath the top patty, little bit of a head scratcher there
I missed Classic Big Bob burger in Pasadena, texas long long time ago last time we eat at Big Bob since 1976 or 1977 on Halloween Day until 1980's closed place because dumb Immigrants and migrant problem from border!!!!

I'm 65. Those were the best times in America. I'm so thankful the good Lord allowed me to be born in such a great place.
I'm 66 in 2023 and I too, have fine memories of America before Lyndon Johnson empowered America's Democrat enemies to destroy our civilization.
The waitresses were not allowed to use the word-hamburger. They were only called Big-Boys.
Oh the hot fudge cake!!!!

My second job when I was 15 was waitering at the Shoney's Big Boy in Stone Mountain, Georgia. That was back in 1971.
There are still several in Cincinnati Ohio.
I probably eat there once a week.
So true.
I remember when I was a kid and we had a Frishas Big Boy. I loved their hamburgers. Never had one as good.
Bob's Big Boy, truly an American icon. 🍔
He was made by my dad Bill Swan
Priceless! God bless you and yours always and thanks again for everything you do! Thanks for the wonderful memories!

We had Shoney's Big Boy in the southeast. I remember the Big Boy statue out front. Then one year he disappeared and was replaced by a bear mascot.

My VERY FIRST JOB was with BOB'S BIG BOY when it was a part of Marriott Corporation.

Elias Big Boy just south of Detroit and Frisches Big Boy in Toledo, our favorites in the 60's. On Friday's their spaghetti dinner was always great.
In the Pittsburgh area, Est'n Park Restaurants used the Big Boy logo.
I really miss going here, they disappeared in FL, but for a short while in the early 2000's there was a store in the Maitland area. Sadly it didn't last long. I do order their tartar sauce online, they have the best!

Cleveland?
There were Big Boy restaurants down the east coast as well. I remember eating there on trips back and forth to Georgia.

Great food tied to a lot of memories. For some reason back east the chain was called Shoneys.
I remember Kips big boys. I loved that sauce on the burgers.
I miss the BIG BOY.
We have 3 in our area SW Ohio.

The Frisch's that exists today is now a separate entity from the main Big Boy operation.

Manny Stallman drew this for years. Great artist . . . .
OMG...Remember Eat N Park (from Bob's Big Boy), and Isleys chipped beef.....
Patton Oswalt sounds pretty good narrating this. Come to think of it, he'd be a good model for the big boy too.
