Huge public service announcement, but keep in mind that some head gaskets are directional (as in "this side up") if you ever wanted to try the repair on your own. Also, I feel like they didn't stress enough that if you have a blown head gasket, there's a chance that the mating surface on the block or head could be warped, causing the new gasket to fail. Subies aren't thaaaat bad. It comes down to the driver mostly, make sure it's got oil and if it's boosted just don't floor it at 2k rpm cause it'll destroy the engine. I had to trade in my sti to go back to school and the sales dude who test drove it did exactly that. I tried to explain to him how bad that is and to simply down shift when going uphill. He kept doing it. Any doubts I had about trading it in went out the window, I knew the car was fucked just by that short drive. Sure enough, I heard the guy who bought had the engine die on him literally 2 weeks later. I bought it new and drove it for 120k mostly on stage 2, had no issues. It is mostly the driver. Now I have a brz and love it.
Man I had to replace the head gasket on my honda civie today. I'd pay 5 to 6000 for a miata just because of how easy it is to replace it compared to any other vehicle I've ever seen. This has honestly inspired me to make a life long project out of making a car company that just destroys every other car company. Insanely reliable and insanely easy to work on with super easy to replace parts that are cheap. If you are considering buying a car with a blown head gasket, research how easy it is to replace it and go from there.
ALWAYS test to make sure it runs before installing all the others accessories (Radiator, hoses, A/C, etc). Saves you a lot of trouble if you have to backtrack, and running it without coolant for a few seconds won’t affect it.
@@apfel_taartje475 there won’t be any adverse affects by running it for a few seconds. Obviously if running it for minutes you would want to put Coolant or Distilled Water in it.
Or they know how to properly do head gaskets. This job was a complete failed hack job. He didn't check the block, didn't check the surface roughness, didn't check for true top dead center, didn't check the head for flatness. True DIY hack job. And no I didn't thumbs down, I never do that. I'll thumbs-up it because I find the failure entertaining. 😂
@@nitroustommy3668 I think you missed the part when they said he took the entire motor to a shop and had it machined. What they failed to describe was how important it is to check the item you pointed out.
@@mexzcanninja7412 oh I've must have missed that. I don't think they pulled the block and had it checked. They definitely didn't check for True top dead center and I bet the timing was way off ("building fuel pressure" 😂). Block and heads require a certain surface roughness to use MLS gaskets so they might be using the wrong gasket because I doubt the block is smooth enough (they're not even from the factory) I mean, you don't know, until you know, you know...
I've done I few head replacements (and thus head gasket replacements) over my time working on vehicles, and it is definitely a long and irritating process, but in the end it definitely pays off
0:33 seconds into the video. On Sunday of this very week. I just replaced a Valve cover gasket on my 4.2l inline6 GMC Envoy. I had to take the intake, air filter box, air intake "4200 Vortec" plenum, and intake manifold off. As well as the alternator, to have room for the intake forward upward sweep to remove the intake manifold. All just to get to the valve cover bolts. A few steps further and I could have removed the head and just done the head gasket since I was that far in there. But a blown head gasket wasn't the issue. Massive amounts of oil in the spark plug tubes (coil over plug system) meant a leaking valve cover gasket. It was the spark plug tube gaskets, but it still counts as a valve cover leak since those are apart of the valve cover gasket kit. FELT SUPER ACCOMPLISHED AFTER DOING THIS JOB! 👋💪💪💪😁
We have a Lanz Bulldog, and last week we figured out that my great-grandfather just threw away the head gasket away, because he accidentally burnt the head too hot( you need to set the Head on fire to preheat the engine) and let the gasket melt. Now we overhaul the Motor after about 60 years. This thing ran without a head gasket for the last 60 years, but the compression was not the best, that’s why we repair it. But the torque from that 10l one cylinder is still amazing.
I purposely bought a Subaru with a blown head gasket as the vehicle cost plus cost to fix was too good to pass up, and BTW- they are pretty easy to fix. Took me all of a Sunday afternoon.
EngineerSean UA-cam what the fuck kinda sorcery do you possess to repair a blown head gasket in 1 afternoon when my local shop quoted me 17 hours of labor to repair it not including re machining?
Also paramount: make sure the block and head don't need decking. You can replace a blown head gasket all day but if the block or head have eroded or blown out material the gasket won't seal.
Yeah, this looks like a huge pain lol. I’m all for changing oil, plugs, etc maybe even light suspension work but I do not trust myself to properly line up cams
I'd like to add a couple things. If you're changing the head gasket you need to 100% replace the head bolts with head studs. I highly recommend ARP head studs(It looks like that's what they're using in this video based on the nut design). I use that brand on my 6.0 diesel and torqued down to 210lbs, they hold exponentially greater than the stock Ford head bolts. You want to do this because any other performance upgrade is going to put additional force on the head bolts and increase the chance of blowing a gasket or other damage. Bigger turbo, bigger injectors, whatever. You can't just add stuff and expect it not to add stress to other components. It might not be as cool but investing time into the engine block before accessories is the way to go. The other thing is cleaning the heads and block. I'm used to diesels where most internal components turn black so I don't know if gas cars just stay clean or not but people go crazy trying to make their heads shine and they clean the head flat but think the stained metal also needs to come out. By over cleaning it, they warp the head. My recommendation is to buy a 100 pack of razor blades, WD-40, pb blaster, brake cleaner, whatever and use that to keep a layer of lubricant on the head and go through about 20 razor blades lightly cleaning all four surfaces. Once you're absolutely sure the head is clean... spray it again and go through a couple more razor blades. More stuff will come off. Then you're good.
Last year I blew the head gasket in my Sentra spec v. Taking it apart wasn’t terrible but I was definitely fearful of putting stuff back together. Making sure everything lines up like the timing belt and camshafts gave me a lot of anxiety. It was a $3500 job and I got it done for $200 (did have to buy some tools). If it didn’t work I was probably junking it anyway but it’s still running strong thankfully. This was my first big job on a car. I had a similar issue with rough idling but was smooth over 1200 rpm, and at idle it would drop dangerously low sometimes
on my old D15 civic (EF hatch) you didn't even have to pull the exhaust/intake manifolds out of the car, just loosen and pull away from the head, then remove all the electricals... made it so much easier...
You need to pull fuel pump fuse. Cycle the engine a bit to get oil system filled. Then put fuses back in. Once back, cycle key a couple times to on position. Listen to fuel pump cycle. Now your fuel system is primed. You can now safely start the car.
As an F-150 owner, I can't stress enough how envious I am watching you guys standing there bent over in the engine bay, and not a step ladder in sight... 🤧
dude my homie just snapped a head stud, but as he backed it out of the block, the broken part followed just due to the way it broke. when the head was off again, I just pulled it right out with my fingers. threads were fine, but stud was stretched and broken as fuck. same with the first one we torqued down. I suggested to him (before all this happened) that he should replace the head studs because they stretch, and he was like "nah, it'll be fine" well it was not fine. replace the head studs whenever you have to take the head off. I'd say we got lucky as F U C K
Last year I bought a 1996 Mercedes E420 for just over a 1,000€ with good spec, almost no rust and rather clean past. The only thing I had to do was a head gasket job. 250€ later and it's running strong and smooth after almost 10,000km by now. Yes, it is worth it and anyone can do it with enough time :-)
Just for you to know, usually, like 99% of the time, when a headgasket blows: it doesnt mean that the gasket itself it's broken or something. Insted what happens is that the cylinder head surface where the gasket sits, it's bend due to a high heating and cooling so fast. Sometimes even the cylinder block surface where the gasket sits, also bends. That's what trully leaks. Sometimes, the 20% of the times, just by putting a new gasket, may get the form of that bend and prevent it from leaking. The other 80% of the time yo will need to resurface the cylinder head. Sometimes you also have to resurface the cylinder block. Otherwise you will never rapare that at all.
Seriously this video is garbage, well over half of the time when you have a blown head gasket, you need a hell of a lot more work done than a new head gasket.
In the case of my MR2 it was just an old gasket starting to deteriorate. (Mine wasn't really blown though, just had exhaust gas leaking into the cooling system, causing overheating.) I measured the head and block for warpage and it was all within spec. Slapped a new gasket on, (did port/polishing, valve job and replaced all seals while the head was off) and good as new!
I was scrolling for a comment like this. They just breeze by the fact that he took the head to a machine shop, didn't even say that it was the head they took there or what they are fixing - warping (but clearly did because its so clean). Really takes the value of this video down to 0.
Damn this makes me miss my MR2. It was so amazing having a little, light car that was pretty easy to work on because the parts were small enough to fit in your hands. Plus T tops or Targa tops are the best roof arrangement ever. When you go down hill on back roads during the evening time, you can feel the temperature change as you dip into cool, misty fog.
With the bp 1.8 non interference your method is fine but with interference engines it's poor practice to set the pistons to tdc THEN set cam timing. Set your crank timing to 60ish degrees btdc, then set cams, then bring your crank timing up to tdc. This insures no contacting issues when setting timing regardless of engine type.
the first time i replaced a head gasket it took me about 10 hours. I had no idea what I was doing and used painters tape to label everything. When I reassembled everything and the car ran again I was hooked.
Only thing I didn't hear mentioned in this video is that if you already are replacing the head gasket and plan to make more power or boost an N/A car, even if it's not anytime soon, you should consider a nice set of head studs. They're pretty inexpensive and easy to install if you've already gone this far into working on the engine.

How does a video about replacing a head gasket inspire someone to get a degree in mechanical engineering? You know with that degree you aren't going to be doing any wrenching, right? You'll be spending most if not all of your time behind a computer screen designing things in CAD.
@@Shorty15c4007 why do you have to shut the dude down like that? What do you get out of it? You cant begin to know a single thing about what he plans to do with that degree. I don't think they pulled the block and had it checked. They definitely didn't check for True top dead center and I bet the timing was way off ("building fuel pressure" 😂).
Block and heads require a certain surface roughness to use MLS gaskets so they might be using the wrong gasket because I doubt the block is smooth enough (they're not even from the factory)

Dohc vs pushrod v6. I know what I'd prefer to work on.

I love all of Donut... But this is, by far, my favorite series. PLEASE never stop...

So true sometimes the head cracks which you would only notice after resurfacing clearly this guys first head gasket
Agreed they dont mention any of that info..
Except when the 800€ gaskets start to leak and u put alluminium tape on it because u're poor and live in a quite rainy country :D
Woah MR2's are pretty nice (you should get one)
With the bp 1.8 non interference your method is fine but with interference engines it's poor practice to set the pistons to tdc THEN set cam timing. Set your crank timing to 60ish degrees btdc, then set cams, then bring your crank timing up to tdc. This insures no contacting issues when setting timing regardless of engine type.
