That was an awesome breakdown. This really shows the brilliance of Joe Walsh and his ability to take something simple, put a lot of feel into it, and make it sound complex!
Joe did an opener for Foreigner back in 1985 at the Hampton Coliseum and the wife & I went ....the show was awesome. Before the show ...Joe did an interview with the local rock radio station. He gave the best interview and even called Stevie to ask her what she was doing ...it was a hoot. I love Joe and so glad he survived his crazy drug and alcohol days. I thank Stevie and The Eagles for helping him survive ...he is such a talent. Thanks for sharing this vid Kelly ...I like anything Joe :)
You got a new (and sober 14 yrs.) subscriber Kelly Dean, because Joe is THE REASON, I picked up the guitar back in 1979. He is still my main man! I hope to meet him one day soon, but I did shake his hand from my elbows on the lip of the stage at the old Ritz in Manhattan in 1988. I could look up his nose and get slapped with the sweat of him and his bass player that night. I miss that place!! Small venue with about 350-75 people standing (but for the bar or the balcony) it was AWESOME.
I mean, come on! One of the most recognizable rock & roll guitar tones ever! AND he broke Stevie's heart. Makes one feel like an underwhelming human being in comparison. What a cool guy.
I met Joe at an event a few years back (we have some mutual friends - if you know what I mean) he has an amazing story and is lucky to be alive. Anyways - you're a damn fine player Kelly - I'm glad I stumbled onto your channel.
Their stories are just as good as the music. I was a kid to a young teen and bating down drug myself at 11 years old. Rock n Roll , Drugs, and then Sex. In that order for me. I feel just as lucky to be here myself and I hit the drugs hard into my mid 30's. No heroin thank goodness or meth. But everything else of the eras I did them. Pills, acid, weed, hash, cocaine, Sherm, mushrooms, ludes, alcohol, you name it. I was game. I'm lucky to still be here at age 55. All those concerts every weekend! Lifes Been to me So far!
Great job, you did great on life’s been good 👍 it will be a much happier song when anyone Is down about themselves and the better you are the better you get both playing and feeling about yourself. Plus the riffs and solo are great to!👍
What a brilliant tutorial. Clear and concise, straight to the point. So many tutorials beat about the bush, repeating over and over and taking an age getting to the point. You sir are right up my street, give me what’s needed so I can get on with working on it. Thank you so much. Subscribed
I played with Joe in the 80s. He was exactly how you hope he’d be. He offered me coke and I said “No thanks, I don’t” and Joe asked “when did you give up?” It didn’t occur to him that a guitar player in the 80s didn’t use drugs. I played with him when he was at his worst. No matter how wasted, he could still play.
If uncle ted was the hottest guitar player in your list from Michigan, ol' Joe is def the hottest player outta Kansas! Sick dude on that gitfiddle. And as always I was entertained
Hey Kelly, I started learning guitar late life and am leaning into the intermediate level now I think, so thank you for the lessons! I can remember in high school pumping quarters into the juke box when this song first came out. Keep the videos coming!
This is a REALLY good instructive video and presented in a very doable way. The best videos on YT are made by true fans of the artists they're covering, and it shows in knowing the true fingerings and tendencies of playing a song. This song intro is a guitar lesson in itself, so many textures and positions--with pulloffs, slides, bends, muted notes *and triplets. The best, I think, intro to a song for a new guitar player to learn a lot of essential skills. I tipped you a $20 señor KDA. *(added edit)
WOW, this was great fun. Another Joe favorite has always been "Life in the Fast Lane". Everyone sorta knows the intro myself included, it's the rest of the tune I'd like to master. Please show us how to play this one?
Grrrrreeeaaatt tune tutorial Kelly i seen him 5 time what a hoot this guy is and such awesome riffs he came up with , i was wondering kelly do you have any of the music that is your own you should do some of the stuff you have came up with because i bet you have some kick ass stuff of your own. YOU ARE A GUITAR GOD BROTHER.
Great lesson and I agree this is a great riff. Joe Walsh such an amazing guitarist. And thanks for the history, I didn’t realize all those things about Joe Walsh. Thank you for sharing that amazing video footage of Joe Walsh! ❤Oh my goodness is that a telecaster in your Hands ! Did you get a new guitar for your collection? I just watched your guitar Collection video and you weren’t too fond of the telecaster that you had😂
Say him play the Star Spangled Banner at Kent State University's Homecoming football game (circa 1984), then play all night at "JB's" bar on Water Street. 🎸
Thanks for another great lesson! Your playing and tone is always spot on and your teaching style makes it easy to follow Are you playing through the blackstar that’s in the shot and if so, what model is that?
I've always felt like it's important to see an artist play their own music live. It's the chance for them to convey to the audience what they think is important in delivering the music from a single instrument and without the full sound of all the extra guitars in the studio track. Of course backing tracks ruin this live but being more of the original recorded music, if that's what you want. Not for me peronally.

Nice. Clear and concise.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Joe Walsh but this lesson is changing my mind! Thank you.
Great lesson!
Joe Walsh: "I had more fun in my 20's in the 70's than I'm having in my 70's in the 20's." LOL!

Your tone and playing is absolutely spot on! Good lesson too.

Thanks man! The eagles copyright striked my channel last month. As a result, I'll be staying well away from their stuff in the future sadly.
Those dudes are straight up a holes, except joe of course
So good. Thanks for breaking it down and sharing the other video. Check him out here on YT when he was on Live From Daryl’s House show.

Hey Kelly. Is that a Dm chord you're using at the end of the step-down at about 0:40?
A5 chord. The one at D7, G9 & B10? That chord? If so, that's an A5.
@@KellyDeanAllenGuitar Negative. It looks like the little step-down from F (in a Dmaj shape) to Cm to what I think is Dm. ???
Very strong fingers
Are you going to do a tutorial on the solo?
Yep. In a few days.
What's a doublestop?
Playing two notes at the same time.
You gotta make that Joe Walsh face!
Maybe you should use More distortion?
Tutorial doesn’t start until 7 min in
Correct. These videos are part tutorial, part rock and roll history lesson.
Wake me up if the lesson starts. Cheers.
The actual teaching is great, but man, you gotta stop repeating yourself… I hadda plow through this. 👍🙌❤️
Hard to pull off the first riff with 10s on your guitar. Or, Joe has really strong hands....
I use 10s.
Toughen up pal
@@yesindeed5608 Yes Sir. Working it daily. Love this tune......

Cool insight 😸
@@coldroses5337it's an insight into his life, and the guitarist video is talking about his wild life at the beginning, I don't think it's irrelevant.
