For years I thought he was using a slide on Life's Been Good until I saw him play live, holy crap we were three feet away what a master. Sometimes he uses a slide and other times he doesn't
There's no better way to start a rainy weekend than with your lessons! Especially, cool when it's Joe Walsh....an all-time favorite. Great job...as always! Thank you, Rob!
Joe is one the greatest guitar players ever. I'm 68 and have been listening to him since I was 15 years old, hanging around Kent State. Akron-Cleveland players have played those bends forever because we learned them from Joe 50 some years ago.
Coreect!!! Joe Walsh is the most underated guitar player. And does not take a back seat to any! Guitar player. How many guitar players can play in a 3 piece Rock Band. Like the James Gang. Not many folks! Thanks! For giving Joe respect. Listen to Boston. More then a Feeling. Their biggest hit. You will hear a Joe Walsh lick. Ps. Tom Schultz is a huge James Gang fan.
My favourite guitar, a Goldtop with P90s - a very happy place to be. Change all of the plastics to black, add locking tuners, roller bridge and Ali tailpiece and it's perfect.
I have seen Joe twice with the Eagles. The second time he played Turn to Stone which is my favorite track of his! Love your playing Robert. Hope to jam with you someday!
I use this trick for blues and rock. I don't remember why i started doing pre-bend but i was fan of Joe Walsh playing style so probably i learned this listening Eagles and his solo work.
Great video. I don't think I have seen anyone else discuss pre-bends as much as you are doing. I saw Joe Walsh with Eagles on their most recent tour. He's still playing as great as ever, and the fans love him as much as ever. In fact the Eagles show is really divided into two parts--- all the Eagles stuff, and all the Joe Walsh stuff. One of my all-time favourite guitar players.
I love your channel.. Ive been playing for the better of 35 years (not a slouch by any means) and i learn a ton from you and I love your style of teaching.
It’s about time Robert! I love metal and hard rock! But!!! Also southern rock. Bands like .38 special, the eagles, joe Walsh, the James gang, Molly Hatchet… you just kick back, listen to them with a smile on your face, and try to jam along to them. FUN!!! Great video!!!!
I played with Joe in the 80s. Sometimes he plays the A portion of that 1st riff on Str 1 and 2 on Fr12-14, especially the C on the 2nd string, 13 fret, then he moves it down to the 10-12 frets for the G section. He has many ways to play most things.
I love Joe Walsh, nice one Robert, I have been employing this technique since I started playing as my dad used them to great effect. I never used them in my own bands in the 80's, bending strings in the type of music that I wrote was a no no. I did however use them in the cabaret that I played to support my own music. 😎🎙🎸✅
You know I just got to thinking, I haven't been playing for 48 years, as of now I've been playing 49 years come Christmas Day that is. And then next Christmas I will have started playing guitar 50 years ago. Wow! What a road I have come down. Homecomings fairs unbelievable clubs played for crowds of 18,000 Plus people had my share of road time. That is why I know exactly what Bob seger was talking about and the song turn the Page which is a song I'm fairly famous for because of his song I can sing with heart that's one of them. And I love playing today as much as I did with that old Checkmate Sears and roebuck acoustic that I seen under the Christmas tree 49 years ago. Well I just had to say something about it. I hope as time goes by that a lot more people on this website today get to say the same thing someday, I hope.........
Thank-You for the lesson! I saw Joe Walsh from row B on the aisle when "The Smoker You Drink" was new, but I never understood til now what made his playing so unique. Incidentally he changed guitars to play the slide solo in "Rocky Mountain Way" and changed back al fine`. (Roadies are a MUST!)
Way back , I bought a B.B. King album in the discount bin of a local store . B.B. King L.A. Midnight. There were 3 guitar players on it , B.B. , Joe Walsh and Jesse Ed Davis . To have been a fly on the wall of that session .
It's a feeling, confidence and soul . Joe has it all . James gang , 1969 ,wow . He plays better than he can talk these days . one of a kind, never got the credit really . Still playing, top shelf .
You make it look so easy, but i can actually see how you are doing it. For some reason most UA-cam tutorials I watch I can't see what they are playing.
Great job Rob. In the first JW ex. the first 3rd str 16thfret bend can also ring (hold it) as an arpeggio lick & release- Great practice & it builds up strength
Lately I've been working on as I bend a note up on the high E string (pick one any one it don't matter) I catch the B string note in the same fret on my bend up and pre-bend the B string note and let that note do the dropping. It sounds really cool by it's kinda weird to get the hang of but once ya do...
Greetings Robert! Sorry to hear about the damage to your fingers, I hate it when that happens, and I have learned to try using gloves 🧤 to prevent damaging my fingers as much as possible, however, it still occurs occasionally, I once cut one of my fingers badly while I was just washing a plate, and it needed about half a dozen stitches, and it also required some occupational therapy. You can never be too careful, I have learned, the hard way. Hopefully, you will be all healed up soon, I hope and pray for your speedy recovery. Great lesson today! Joe Walsh is often overlooked, but is definitely an awesome guitar player and he has his own unique style that is seldom replicated. I saw an interview with him once where he mentioned that an exercise he often did to warm up led to the creation of the Eagle’s song “Life In The Fast Lane”, I am sure everyone here is familiar with the opening riff of that song. His playing and songwriting deserves to be studied more closely. He is definitely a one of a kind guitar player. Thank you for posting these videos! Please heal up soon! Please have an excellent and awesome day! ☀️✨
It's a great service you are doing for young players these days who lack the discipline and attention span to sit and listen to an LP and figure it out for themselves.
I saw Joe Walsh at the Peabody hotel in Memphis with just a bass player and a drummer and it was awesome I don’t know of anybody that could keep up with him
Joe seems like a really fun person, too. I heard a story from someone who's friends with him. They were hanging out, and at some point Walsh said "Sorry, gotta go. I have Eagles practice" ... that always cracked me up for some reason.
I haven't commented any in quite some time but I'm still here Robert! I really like what you showed today is really cool! Believe it or not playing 48 years I never figured out quite exactly what he was doing and it's so simple. It's crazy how we can overthink things sometimes. And and some good ideas to use that drop bend always call it I use it a lot actually have for years I just get a tune in my melon and make my guitar a window to my soul. Getting that zone and there's nothing like it even to this day. Take care bro and Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Joe Walsh is one my absolute favorite guitarists . I’m not a fan of the Eagles , I definitely think he made them better . Just not what I’m in to . But I absolutely love his solo work , and of course the James gang.
A _true_ guitar hero. For me, perhaps contraversially, joining the Eagles damaged, or at least took the steam out of a solo career which up to _So What_ was just getting better and better. As a fan of his solo work before t'Eagles, I would rather he had not joined.
I wouldn’t say he made the Eagles better it was another phase of the eagles that needed the icing on the cake that was Walsh that gave us Hotel California but Walsh was kicking ass anyway 👍👍👍
Joe Walsh, King of the "Chika-chika" mute between chords. p.s. RB, you left out an important step in your Joe Walsh pre-bend lesson. During the pre-bend it is imperative to squint your eyes and open one side of your mouth. ;- p
If you've had a few drinks or partook of another substance, I'd highly recommend watching the video where Joe Walsh demos his signature PRS guitar. But here's the kicker - play around with speeding up or slowing down the playback speed. It's hilarious.
Joe Walsh has been on my top guitar players list since The James Gang days. I've followed him throughout all his iterations. He had some early personal stuff to work out, but hey! Who doesn't? In the immortal words of JW, "The smoker you drink, the player you get." And that's a fact, Jack!
This is a very good catch on your part, a very good observation (or earservation?) on your part. I agree, he is quite underrated. I play a lot of his stuff, but I sure don't sound like him.
I've been playing a long time and picked some of these licks up from Joe but didn't really process it that much until I saw a video with Guthrie Govan talking about bends a few years back. Now I LOVE pre-bending and doing all kinds of tasty things with bends and when to release them that I just never paid attention to when I was all about learning sweep-picking and playing as fast and clean as possible. Great lesson, Robert. Cheers.
Robert Fripp - (the world's greatest solo) - "Babies on Fire" from Brian Eno's "Here Come the Warm Jets" album. I know it's obscure but man, talking about sounding like strangling a cat! I figure you probably won't do it but I wanted you and others to check it out. High volume required. Seriously frenetic, furious, frantic, and Frippilicious.
Joe is an amazing man and a very brilliant musician. His genius in writing and performing . He has a trademark sound. What size strings do you use.? Great job with hurt fingers
Who would you guys like to see next in the Guitar Hack series?
Mick Robson or Chris Whitley.
Keep the Joe going with Joe Perry.
Dimebag Darrell
How about some Alex Lifeson?
How about Lar from Primus?! Hes got suuuch a unique playing style!
Don Felder is also an extremely underrated guitar player as well. His phrasing and note choice is absolutely insane.
My favorite guitarist. His playing is always so tasteful and melodic.
@@BudgetRC_Channel Yeah he's definitely the most versatile guitarist they ever had. He can play everything from Chet to Wes to Jimi.
All Of You is one of my favorites.
Not underrated by me
@@BudgetRC_Channel you should read his book, it is really good. It's also on audible as an audiobook.
For years I thought he was using a slide on Life's Been Good until I saw him play live, holy crap we were three feet away what a master. Sometimes he uses a slide and other times he doesn't
I love Joe Walsh. He is amazing. His tone and style is beyond words. I would love to play like him.
There's no better way to start a rainy weekend than with your lessons! Especially, cool when it's Joe Walsh....an all-time favorite. Great job...as always! Thank you, Rob!
Someone's in the North East.
@@drewjohnson4794 you got that right!
I learned the pre bend technique while breaking down the lead to Hotel California. As well known as he is, Walsh is an underrated player IMO.
Joe is awesome, always in the moment, unpretentious and genuine. A true American Rocker.
Joe is one the greatest guitar players ever. I'm 68 and have been listening to him since I was 15 years old, hanging around Kent State. Akron-Cleveland players have played those bends forever because we learned them from Joe 50 some years ago.

Joe's playing always pocket. Always remarkably relaxed. Melody and timing. Love ya show and lesson, thanks!
YES!!!...TURN TO STONE LIVE '77..THE GUITAR PLAY BETWEEN WALSH AND FELDER...LEGENDARY!!!..AND UNDERRATED SADLY
That's the jam that made me want to play saw him live in red rocks colorado
I use this trick for blues and rock. I don't remember why i started doing pre-bend but i was fan of Joe Walsh playing style so probably i learned this listening Eagles and his solo work.
Always love to watch your lessons. I’m playing for about 14 years but still learning from your videos. Greetings from Germany 🤘🏻
Even with your fingers wrapped you're still waaayyyy better than me! Joe Walsh is the man!! Absolutely love his playing!!
I have said he's one of the most underrated guitarists for YEARS! Great video!
Great video. I don't think I have seen anyone else discuss pre-bends as much as you are doing. I saw Joe Walsh with Eagles on their most recent tour. Dude that tone is ridiculous. Playing is superb as always

This is awesome. I agree Joe Walsh is a legend. I think he said in an interview Duane Allman taught him to play slide.
I played with Joe in the 80s. Sometimes he plays the A portion of that 1st riff on Str 1 and 2 on Fr12-14, especially the C on the 2nd string, 13 fret, then he moves it down to the 10-12 frets for the G section. He has many ways to play most things.
The thing that always got me Joe Walsh was his unique spin on timing. That would be a great lesson.
Your tone is spot on for Joe Walsh.
I love Joe Walsh, nice one Robert, I have been employing this technique since I started playing as my dad used them to great effect. I never used them in my own bands in the 80's, bending strings in the type of music that I wrote was a no no. I did however use them in the cabaret that I played to support my own music.

Dang that guitar sounds killer love the P90's

1:21 you can hear this in a lot of Eagles solos..this is textbook walsh. Fantastic.
Yes! Let's celebrate Walsh while he is still here with us. Interview please?
Just love to listen to Joe Walsh play. Excellent guitarist!
That neck pickup sounds amazing!!!
Great quick lick, what a revelation!
Literally heard "Life's Been Good" on the radio before this dropped. Love that song. Thanks for the insights!

Love the goldtop too..my dream is a worn goldtop..even like a firefly or harley benton..slim picking in my reality
Joe really is a master of very cool iconic licks for sure , great lesson !
It's a feeling, confidence and soul . Joe has it all . James gang , 1969 ,wow . He plays better than he can talk these days . one of a kind, never got the credit really . Still playing, top shelf .
Joe looks like such a great guy... And a sensational guitar player with a melodic talent
My FAVOURITE new channel. ... Thanks Robert.
Funk #49 is such an incredible song 🎵
Great idea to add some spice to my playing. Going to try and incorporate some of that into my playing.

That was great very informative. I've been a big Joe Walsh fan since I was in high school in the early 70s. So we're talking James Gang
Small details always makes a big difference. Very helpful.

Brilliant! Joe Walsh is an absolute LEGEND!!!
You said it true!! I feel he is very underrated and underlooked!
The show must go on! Band-aids and all! Cool hacks man!!!
OMG, that sound is SO good!
Thanks for the tips. Really changed my playing.
Met Joe at NAMM one year. He is one of my favorite guitar heroes
Joe Walsh has soul and knows how to communicate it through his playing
funk 49 is a funky riffed song i practice all the time and try find my own groove to the core riff.
Great stuff. Like most of the really great guitarists, Joe definitely has a sound all his own. Very cool.
It's a great service you are doing for young players these days who lack the discipline and attention span to sit and listen to an LP and figure it out for themselves.
Awesome vid. Always appreciated Joe's guitar playing. Masterful.
Love Joe walsh.,I would love the song I've been trying for decades (I know where your goin, ) your take would be awsome
I saw Joe Walsh at the Peabody hotel in Memphis with just a bass player and a drummer and it was awesome I don’t know of anybody that could keep up with him
Love me some Walsh! Thanks Homie!!
Good point about reverse bends.
Joe seems like a really fun person, too. I heard a story from someone who's friends with him. They were hanging out, and at some point Walsh said "Sorry, gotta go. I have Eagles practice" ... that always cracked me up for some reason.
joe never gets the credit he deserves, hes definitely a pioneer of the classic rock guitar sound
Whoa, whoa, whoa...Who ever said Joe Walsh was 'underrated' ??? C'mon dude! This guy is an Icon!!! 🤣✌♥️
This is a great hack. Such a big fan of Joe Walsh...thank you Robert!
Thanks again Robert.... Love using pre-bends... George Harrison loves him some pre-bends, too.
What's great is that you are teaching people to get out of their comfort zone. Cool tips that makes you want to grab your guitar.

Dude, you are a great teacher. Great personality, very knowledgeable. Thanks.
I just love your channel. You are so easy to listen to. Love your riffs and lessons.
Man that Les Paul sounds awesome!
I like in Joe's solo in Hotel California he plays a bend on the high E string and that simultaneously becomes the pre-bend for a note on the B string.
Sounds great, Robert!
Listen to Joe Walsh on LP's over and over learning to play!

Joe's solos are great. They are so musical. I enjoy them much more than shred solos.
ROBERT BAKER< Can you do a video lesson about Mark Knopfler pedal steel double stops and pedel steel bends
This one was a great technique inspiration video. Thank you sir.
Excellent lp and tour...
Very cool licks. So many good guitarists to hack. What about Blackmore or Brian May? Some classic British rock.
