  • Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to Bower Cave, where pioneers traveling to Yosemite stopped for the coolness, music, dancing, and partying. Among those who experienced Bower Cave in Mariposa County were John Muir and James Hutchings, two legends in Yosemite history.
In 1953 the cave was also explored by Jon Lindbergh, one of the children of aviator Charles Lindbergh. In the 1950s the cave saw the death of one man who tumbled in approximately 60 feet straight down.

Marie Becker, born Mayer, was my second great-grand mother. Caroline and Fritz Wenger were my Great grand parents. Fritz’s sister was married to Jim McCauley. My grand mother was a daughter of Caroline and Fritz.

Those times were much slower paced, and I think much more enjoyable. As I'm approaching 70 years old, I'm feeling more nostalgic for those times of yester year, and it brings a tear to my eye.

If we lack education, we lack hope. Thank you for sharing unique history lessons with us. I teach 3rd grade in Salinas, CA. and I’m grateful for these stories. Thank you, Jeff!

Wow, all my life as a child and teen, I grew up going to Yosemite quite a bit. I had family who worked and lived in Yosemite Valley for years!! They lived on a row of homes facing the Ahwahnee Meadow. My grandparents and my mom along with her 2 brothers also spent a lot of time there as well and this is the first time I have ever heard of this place! Thank you for sharing that story!!

Well done Jeff. One of my favorite hobby’s is listening to old Jack Benny radio programs. There is one particular episode (Feb 1940) where he and his whole gang travel to Yosemite National Forest for a ski outing. I’ve never been there but your trip helps me “put a face” if you will, to that period of time. Bless you and thank you so much!

It's been about 20 years since I visited Bower Cave. Briceburg Rd. still looks like asphalt patches on top of the old patches on top of the older patches, etc. Thanks for taking us there. Cool place!

That big hole looks scary but there is so much fascinating history there. People were very resilient back in the old days . I enjoyed this trip on the trail too. Thankyou Jeff 😊😊

I love this story, what a beautiful area it was on the drive to the cave. The cave is in a really rugged area. Not easy to get to. Good job there Jeff. You are lucky to be able to go to all these great and interesting places. I know you do a lot of searching for the past history. Thanks

Even though I was safely sitting in my chair, I got shaky watching you near the edge and had to skip ahead. Now that's what I call fear of heights. There is not enough money to get me to where you stood.

Hello Jeff Alan here again I spent many many trips to Bowers cave originally there was no water in Bauer's cave but a minor exploring the cave tapped into a spring and filled it up with water the old hotel there used to have an out building next to it when they tore that building down there were two bodies found underneath the floor supposedly two minors that had disappeared back in the day when I lived in Coulterville I worked for Mariposa road crew I got to travel that road all the way to Yosemite and got to work on it filled in potholes on the road also kept the culverts dug out so that the water would pass under the road and not over the road walk behind an asphalt truck pulling asphalt out of it by shovel the fill in the potholes since it was not a very heavily used road anymore they were not going to use much money to fix it I missed that area and all the wonderful memories I have of it about another 8 or 10 Mi east of Bowers cave there was another Community there where they did Mining and they built the School House that Schoolhouse was carried out and put along the highway there in in Greeley Hill it was opened as a grocery store for many years I don't know what his shape is today today a bar across the road from it called Yosemite Sam was also a very old building and was a good place to eat back in the day
