Modular Jam 04 | Moog Subharmonicon & Mutable Instruments Beads

- Hi friends, it's been a while. While I've been gone, some things have changed in my modular case, and I've been working on something else pretty cool (which I can hopefully share soon!).
The most obvious change is that I've replaced my ES-9 with a Moog Subharmonicon and a 4MS Listen IO. The reason I bought a SubH was because I quickly discovered that I actually wanted something expressive and hands-on: an instrument, not a tool. To be honest, it was pretty hard to admit that my original plan for a hybrid modular system was the wrong direction for me - particularly after investing in something expensive like an ES-9! Such is life.
I've had a lot of fun with the SubH so far, and the 4MS Listen IO lets me run it through Beads, which sends it into a whole other level of ambient.
Thanks for watching. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about this patch, or if you want to suggest something for me to try in a future jam.
-----------------------------
Patch Notes:
The SubH patch is quite simple. I'm using Osc 2 as the bass voice, with Sub 1 working as the root note, which gives me the ability to create nice intervals above it. Osc 1 is the lead voice, and is driven by three of the rhythm generators to add some interest to an otherwise simple melody.
In terms of patching, it's also quite simple. The output of the SubH goes into Beads, and then out to an audio recorder via the 4MS Listen IO: what you hear is straight out of the case. I'm using Seq 2 to gently modulate the filter cutoff, creating small changes in timbre over the course of the 4-bar bass sequence.
The size parameter in Beads is set almost fully CCW, so that the grains that Beads generates are reversed. This makes for a sparkly, kind of swelling texture, which you can hear most clearly towards the end as I increase the Dry/Wet amount. Seq 1 is patched to the Size input - and because Seq 1 is polyrhythmic, this size parameter shifts unpredictably, constantly creating new textures.
Beads is in Sunny Tape mode, which to my ears goes super nicely with the rich harmonic content from the SubH. Some of the other Beads parameters have the attenturandomisers adding a little bit of movement. Finally, the Pitch control is shifting the grains up an octave, and the Feedback is dialled in to add extra texture in the high frequencies.
Towards the end of the video, I freeze the buffer in Beads, allowing me to filter down the SubH and increase the Dry/Wet to let the granular textures ring out, as a kind of washed outro.

this feels somewhat like a summer evening in a 80s Movie. Or the Life is strange Soundtrack. Keep up this work. Its wonderful
Love this piece, so cool to see what people do with their Subharmonicons.
This sounds beautiful 🔥 now i think i need a beads module
Superb!!! Really well done on your Sub and Beads combo !👏
OMG, so much power in a simple sequence! ❤
Love those moogs. Nice job here. Sounds great. Beautiful subh sequence.
sounds awesome 😀
Superb sound !! !! 👍👍✨✨
Beautiful
Very very nice great work
Less is more. Love the minimalist approach in this jam. Sweet !
Agreed, often the simple patches are the best. Glad you enjoyed!
🥰🥰🥰
Beautiful piece. You won’t regret switching to the SubH!
Glad you enjoyed! I'm loving it already - it's a very versatile synth.
Excellent!! 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Love it
Gorgeous!
Thanks!
Nothing sounds like a Moog!
you and this...made my day. thank *YOU* 🙏
That means a lot! Thanks for listening 🙂
Excellent combo .. I need to try this ❤
SubH and Beads are a brilliant duo! Thanks for watching 😁
Nice combination of gear. The SubH is one amazing instrument and interesting to read about your pivot in the modular world. Took me a long time to realise something similar. Look forward to more.
Thank you!
I love your music. ❤
👍👍👍👍👍
lovely
Very relaxing
Thank you!
Da capo! 🙏👍 Beautiful arrangement - you’re a natural born artist 🎷🎶 Keep up the great work 👍 Love and light from Khao Lak, Thailand 🇹🇭❤️☀️🌴🥥
Thank you!
Very nice your minimalist setups. You have a subscription for sure. I hope there's more to come. Regards
Thanks for listening! There is more to come, for sure.
That’s beautiful 😃🌈🙏🏻🕊✨
genial...Bravo. ca peut faire la BO d'un film de SF...
Man, this is good.
Thanks! 😁
I love it.
Thank you!
this is incredible. I'm trying to learn my subharmonicon, you made this sound incredible. did you build your own case?
Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏👏🤩
Thanks for listening!
That Subharmonicon always sounds amazing! Lovely jam here! How have you been enjoying the Moog over going with output from the ES-9?
Great!
Thank you!
Wow xxx
Very nice jam! How fortuitous, as well; I just removed my SubH from a larger case and put it into a 104hp skiff as a stand alone instrument with some drum modules...
That’s the way to do it, I think! I would use it less as an instrument if I had too many other modules surrounding it - this way, it’s more playable and tactile. A kick drum module like the Kickain is pretty high on my list, I reckon it would pair pretty well with the SubH. What drum modules do you use?
🤙🌌🤙
This is gonna make me go get a Subharmonicon
Thank you, it's a beautiful sound.
ps something reminds me of moderat fast land
Wow, that means a lot. I love Moderat! Thank you!
I dream of running my m32 and subH into some Mutable mods
Drop that on a tape loop or just put RC 20 over your input in any DAW and witness the amazingness. Great sequence, I've also got the SUB out from my Setup and use it as a standalone entity. Found it veri hard to make it play nice with other modular stuff i have.
Good idea! The tape emulation in Beads is pretty good, but there’s a proper reel to reel on my ‘to buy’ list. It’s almost obligatory for ambient music! You’re right, it can be a bit tricky to tame - I have most success just using the seq outs to modulate other gear contextually with the sequence. Thanks for listening 🙂
i got one it boosts my bassstation and my hydra/wavestarte are right next to it .hydra has cool gate/clocks out to stab in too
Beautiful. I'm thinking of getting into synths. Is there an alternative to Beads I could use that would give me a similar effect?
Thank you! You should do it - eurorack synths are a particularly satisfying creative endeavour imo. In terms of granular modules - there are a few out there, and they each have their own character. I haven’t tried these personally, but Miso Cornflakes, Make Noise Morphagene and Qu-Bit Nebulae look pretty interesting.
@@servantsounds Awesome, thanks for your response!
These guys could use this video to sell these things...I was immediately looking at how it cost...
