Modular Jam 06 | Moog Subharmonicon, Mutable Instruments Beads, 4MS Listen IO
I’ve recently been making more complex Subharmonicon patches to really explore what it can do, before stripping them back to something beautiful and melodic.
I reckon this is one of my favourite jams so far - I feel like I'm starting to zero in on the kind of music I love to make. It's incredibly satisfying to be making progress on this creative journey.
Thanks for being here with me - we hit 100 subscribers since the last time, which is a great milestone!
P.S. Apologies for the video quality of this one. I was trying to be clever, but it turns out I don’t know that much about video…anyone got any tips?
--------------------------
Patch Notes
Sequencer 1 is playing a sequence on Oscillator 1, but I’ve enabled the Sub2 control so the sequenced notes are changing the subharmonic relationship to the root note for the second sub voice, instead of sequencing the pitch directly. This makes for a two-tone bass where the tones get closer together as the pitch gets higher. Unfortunately for some reason, my Osc1 Sub1 isn't working, so I'm not using that for this patch.
Oscillator 2 is set up the same way, but I’m using Sub1 in the traditional sense, and so it is sequenced by Sequencer 2. One of my favourite things about this patch is that the second step of Seq2 actually hits a slightly detuned subharmonic, which you can just about hear if you listen out for it towards the second half.
There’s no particular logic to the patterns or how they overlap - the SubH is a happy accident machine more than anything - and in this patch I particularly liked how the bass sequence is clearly repeating, but the two melodies together have no clear start and end point.
On to Beads, then. Audio from the SubH goes straight into Beads, and I’m using both sequencer CV outputs to modulate the Time and Feedback parameters.
I find that when Feedback is constant and the Pitch control is up an octave (as it is here), the pitching and re-pitching of the signal can get a bit overwhelming. Using CV to gently modulate the feedback leaves a bit more space - at least to my ears.
The grain playback is reversed using Size, Density is at 2 o’clock for random grain generation, and the attenurandomisers are adding a little movement to everything.

Modular Jam 05 | Moog Subharmonicon, Mutable Instruments Beads & a prototype module
Переглядів 2,2 тис.Рік тому
I've wanted to make a drone for ages - in fact, ever since I started following @habnmusic (if you aren't following him yet, you should be). The Moog Subharmonicon and Beads are both ideal candidates for making drones, so I sat down this weekend to have a go. The result is more of a slow chord progression than a drone, but I really liked it. For me, it feels like travelling through a city late a...
Modular Jam 04 | Moog Subharmonicon & Mutable Instruments Beads

Hi friends, it's been a while. While I've been gone, some things have changed in my modular case, and I've been working on something else pretty cool (which I can hopefully share soon!). The most obvious change is that I've replaced my ES-9 with a Moog Subharmonicon and a 4MS Listen IO. The reason I bought a SubH was because I quickly discovered that I actually wanted something expressive and h...
Modular Jam 03 | Ableton Push 2 & Mutable Instruments Beads

I bought Beads because I knew it would reignite my creativity - and in particular, my love for just playing music and getting lost in how something sounds. I find myself getting caught up in the technical aspects of 'producing music' so easily - and ironically, I never actually produce anything anyway! For this one, I made a flat white and dusted off the Push 2 to spend a few minutes playing so...
Sunset - Ambient

I've been away a fair bit over the last few weeks, so I haven't had much time to film another modular jam, but I did catch the sunset while on a boat in the Dover Strait, so that kind of made it worth it. This short ambient piece is something I put together to go with the video. Hopefully, it's a worthy accompaniment to what nature can spin up. Thanks for watching! Patch Notes There's nothing f...
Modular Jam 02 | Mutable Instruments Beads

Trying out something a bit calmer this time. This beautiful piano sample is from Splice and was already pretty heavily processed, so I've used a bit more of a light touch with Beads, letting it sparkle over the top. More about that in the patch notes below. On another note, I've made a couple of changes to my rack - most notably adding some character to one of my makeshift blank panels in the f...
Modular Jam 01 | Mutable Instruments Beads & VCV Rack
Переглядів 3122 роки тому
I've wanted to explore the modular world for a while now, so I recently picked up a Mutable Instruments Beads to get me started. This is the first in a series of little jams exploring the module, with some help from VCV Rack via. an Expert Sleepers ES-9. Thanks for watching. Let me know in the comments if you have any questions about this patch, or if you want to suggest something for me to try...
I dream of running my m32 and subH into some Mutable mods
This sounds beautiful 🔥 now i think i need a beads module
Love those moogs. Nice job here. Sounds great. Beautiful subh sequence.
genial...Bravo. ca peut faire la BO d'un film de SF...
🥰🥰🥰
this is incredible. I'm trying to learn my subharmonicon, you made this sound incredible. did you build your own case?
That Subharmonicon always sounds amazing! Lovely jam here! How have you been enjoying the Moog over going with output from the ES-9?
Wow xxx
Lovely work on this S !
Superb sound !! !! 👍👍✨✨
🤙🌌🤙
LOVE THIS
Hey do you use the 4ms listen io as a send and return for using pedals?
This is really great! So uplifting!
This is gonna make me go get a Subharmonicon
Triple Co Roast - good choice!! ☕️ Bristol lad? Lovely drones my friend 🙏
👍👍👍👍👍
I love your music. ❤
Sounds absolutely beautiful man. I am a producer myself but quite new to modular synths, would love to know more about your set-up and how everything works!
this feels somewhat like a summer evening in a 80s Movie. Or the Life is strange Soundtrack. Keep up this work. Its wonderful
OMG, so much power in a simple sequence! ❤
sounds awesome 😀
nice one
Love it
Very nice jam! How fortuitous, as well; I just removed my SubH from a larger case and put it into a 104hp skiff as a stand alone instrument with some drum modules...
That’s the way to do it, I think! I would use it less as an instrument if I had too many other modules surrounding it - this way, it’s more playable and tactile. A kick drum module like the Kickain is pretty high on my list, I reckon it would pair pretty well with the SubH. What drum modules do you use?
Thank you, it's a beautiful sound. ps something reminds me of moderat fast land
Wow, that means a lot. I love Moderat! Thank you!
Great atmosphere, congratulations! 🤗
👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed!
Excellent, really 😊
i got one it boosts my bassstation and my hydra/wavestarte are right next to it .hydra has cool gate/clocks out to stab in too
I like your use of voice samples.
This was the first time I’ve tried it, but I think it works pretty well. Glad you enjoyed!
Man, this is good.
Thanks! 😁
Great!
Thank you!
😍😍😍😍
Bravo!! 👏👏👏👏👏🤩
Thanks for listening!
Beautiful. I'm thinking of getting into synths. Is there an alternative to Beads I could use that would give me a similar effect?
Thank you! You should do it - eurorack synths are a particularly satisfying creative endeavour imo. In terms of granular modules - there are a few out there, and they each have their own character. I haven’t tried these personally, but Miso Cornflakes, Make Noise Morphagene and Qu-Bit Nebulae look pretty interesting.
@@servantsounds Awesome, thanks for your response!
These guys could use this video to sell these things...I was immediately looking at how it cost...
People think Drones are simplistic and rather easy to create. That is SO untrue! To make an impactful sonically intriguing Drone is extremely difficult. I'm always amazed by an artist who can create a dynamic Drone. I still can't do it yet. Your piece is a bit more complicated than the basic concept of a music/sound Drone yet very close. Clever idea in the way you chose to structure the recorded voices amongst a Soundscape which adds a touch of melancholy and a dream-like haze of slow motion to the entire experience when listening to this Sound Piece. Bravo. Very well done! Just subscribed ~💡🎶🎛👏🏽💥
Thank you! I agree, often the things that seem the simplest require the most artistry to create. I'm really enjoying learning the process, thanks for following along! I have so many field recordings so it was good to find a use for one. Like you said, voices and world-sounds infuse music with such a specific emotion 😊
I really enjoyed reading the patch notes here. Really well articulated and given me some sparks to explore. SubH + Beads makes so much sense.
Thanks! I really enjoy writing the patch notes so I'm very glad you found them interesting. SubH and Beads is just a brilliant combo, but they do take a bit of dialling in. Sometimes they fight for attention in the patch 😁
@@servantsounds ha yeah I can totally imagine. Let’s face it, the SubH is a tricky beast in its own right. Then adding granular processing on top of that 😅 still it makes sense to me. I might have a go myself.. I’m wondering if I could take a copy of the sequence of the Sub, send that to another voice and send the output of ‘that’ into Beads. Essentially keeping a pure version and a glitched version.. 🤔
@@draconianrhythms that's a good idea! Parallel processing the sequence like that would also mean that you could apply the reverb to only the granulated signal, which would leave your original voice clean and unprocessed as a foundation. You might get a bit more sonic clarity that way - everything goes a bit washed when the Beads reverb gets past 3 o'clock.
@@servantsounds yeah man, there’s something in this I reckon ;) I will try to get something patched this Friday along these lines and will share the results 😁 it’s been too long since me and the SubHarm have done battle haha
@@draconianrhythms Please do! I'd love to hear what you come up with 😁
Really nice emotional sound! Could be further defined with some EQ-ing =)
Thank you! You're right, maybe I'll start doing some in post-production - or better yet, buy another module...
Lovely stuff! Thank you
Thanks for listening!
Great work.
Thank you!
excellent. bravo
Thanks for listening!
Less is more. Love the minimalist approach in this jam. Sweet !
Agreed, often the simple patches are the best. Glad you enjoyed!
I love it.
Thank you!
Very very nice great work
Da capo! 🙏👍 Beautiful arrangement - you’re a natural born artist 🎷🎶 Keep up the great work 👍 Love and light from Khao Lak, Thailand 🇹🇭❤️☀️🌴🥥
Thank you!
Sonds great! Very athmospheric!
Thanks for listening!
Beautiful textures there - and the "mind the gap" recordings fit perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you! My favourite part of that field recording is at the start, when all the different announcements overlap. Field recording is a wonderful exercise in really listening and appreciating ordinary things, and I find I notice so much more listening to the recordings back.
Gorgeous!
Thanks!
