Armoured Personnel Carriers in Northern Ireland (PSNI Land Rovers)

- Heavily armoured police Land Rovers responding, patrolling and preparing for events in Belfast, one of the most dangerous areas in the world to be a police officer.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has hundreds of Tangi, Pangolin and Penman Land Rover Armoured Personnel Carriers to protect police officers from the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
These are now primarily used for Crowd Control such as during protests and riots where the threat of being bombed or shot is greater than in other areas of the UK.
They are also used to protect police officers from ambush while patrolling in areas that are home to para-military groups, or dealing with terrorism.
For these reasons all police officers in Northern Ireland are armed and carry firearms. Specialist units such as the Tactical Support Group (TSG) assist regular officers by providing manpower, riot control and counter-terrorism.

i hope everything was okay and i honestly hope that there were no injuries to anyone even to the police, the civilians and the drivers of those AWESOME "beasts" for vehicles...... 🙂.... thank you for the videos that you three upload you guys! i really appreciate them a lot..... because i have learnt some new things as well along the way while watching you emergency videos......... 🙂
@@rebeccafionacornel6558 Thankfully no reported injuries for all sides involved! We did see some of the damage afterwards but nothing too bad. Happy to provide and thank you for the positive feedback as always Becky!
@@CobraEmergency 🙂.... and next time, please be careful, okay...... it was scary when one of those guys in the armoured police car stopped and came to talk to you guys....... kinda scared me for a bit, because i thought that you guys were in trouble...... but i guess that why we get these videos..... you three know what you three are doing is very risky..... but please be careful next time not to get caught...... 🙂 well i hope that you have an amazingly awesome day today and everyday....... may you three stay safe, protected and blessed always...... 🙂
@@rebeccafionacornel6558 Yes we'll be careful! Thank you for your thoughts! We're always happy to speak to the police officers and let them know who we are and what we're doing, especially when they stop to ask! It's also useful so they can give us any advice or help us in anyway - for example one told us where to go to see these Land Rovers on general police duties, which was around the city centre nightlife! :)
@@CobraEmergency nice to know that......... 🙂...... i always felt that people are not all bad you know...... same goes to the police officers and the other emergency services........ thank you once again guys for the videos you make 🙂
As an NI expat, it's curious to see how things have both changed and yet stayed the same in the last 20-odd years. Got my driving license in 1991 so the Troubles were still very much ongoing. At that time all of the RUC Land Rovers were painted battleship grey, and you were likely to see them alongside Army Land Rovers. The drab grey didn't do much to make them blend in... They also had quite a few "regular" patrol cars in my area, which were typically plain red or blue, mid-sized and up Vauxhall, Ford or Rover with plain black steel wheels, very obvious thick bullet-proof glass all around, and the sort of stance a car will get when it has a bunch of heavy body armor embedded in the panelwork. As an...uh..."enthusiastic" young man with a car, I learned quickly to spot these "unmarked" cars from a mile away and slow down before I got a ticket! The high-visibility markings came in later, probably with the changeover to being the PSNI. Those Land Rovers took some serious abuse, wasn't uncommon to see footage of them being pelted with all kinds of projectiles and on fire, driving on through it like it was no big deal.
Love LR for their long life and mighty. Really great off-roaders.
When you see Tangis responding you know its kickin off
Was always weird growing up thinking these were normal police cars. You'd see them everywhere and think every country had them...
Though, pretty cool vehicles when you look at them from the outside of NI in
i totally agree with you on the "COOL" factor! yup they are really cool, and to be honest this is the first time that i am seeing these....plus i live in India and we don't see vehicles this at all.....
Why do American police need MRAPS even for riot duty when Police in Northern Ireland have used a smaller jeep that is designed for riot control
@@oscarosullivan4513 u.s military sell them at a discount to the u.s police force
@@generalkenobi5173 Not meant to be a popular programme I believe
@@oscarosullivan4513 not meant to be a popular program for the public. However due to U.S laws after an incident years back when the U.S police didn't have enough fire power and protection laws were bought into place that made it easier and more cost effective for police forces to buy military discounted vehicles.
I am from Belfast and I have to say, these jeeps are not personnel carriers, they are regular patrol vehicles that police in NI perform regular patrols with they're not just for disturbances and riots etc
Mm yes that was my thinking! But on an official PSNI fleet list it has them marked as 'APCs'. I guess as they do carry a group of officers for riot control, as well as patrol and regular duties.
Although they only use them for regular patrols in the most dangerous areas
Not really. They use them for patrols everywhere they patrol using them in my neighbourhood and my neighbourhood is one of the most peaceful districts of Belfast
It really is a case of just having them staffed and they'll move from area to area. They patrol the city centre a lot particularly just on nightlife.
More recently though, there have been more and more PSNI cars patrolling due to the NI Assembly Election and I have not seen one jeep only cars so they are definitely going out of fashion as NI gets safer
Nice video of home...miss it.
Awesome video! Unique vehicles for a unique security situation, I suppose
yup!
unique would be incorrect you can see them on regular patrols in areas with high levels of paramilitary gangs on a hourly basis
Lower pitched sirens would have sounded cooler on those Land Rovers
Some of them do have lower pitch sirens, they're most common in Belfast
@@unknown45754they used to have two tone horns as well
@3:51 must have been the bit where they came out and asked you why you were filming outside the station. Probably told you that you were a security threat. 😂
And they’d be right to think that as people actively try to kill police officers in ni and place bombs on there’s and there family’s cars
Amazing video!!! 😊
There really cool most are showing there age though aren’t they . I suppose they’ve been through quite a lot . But there’s nothing quite like and old Defender armoured or not .
i totally agree with you.......
They got new ones from 2012 onwards
@@oscarosullivan4513 Ah ok .

@@rebeccafionacornel6558 Your welcome
This is really cool
Lots of NIAS and PSNI respond 5-10 a day I hear whenever I go down to belfast.
the psni land rovers are called land rover tangis. and they also have pangolins which are newer
Awsome
They carry personnel and they are armoured, that makes them armoured personnel carrier's, I spent many years in one,Hotspur and tangi !
J2 was a cracking ballsy unit much respect brother.
nice video
👍👍
Hi. I was wondering when this was? Interesting seeing one respond, but late at night calls for interesting things. (I would be happy with a month if possible?)
I can't believe the massive camera they've mounted to the Land Rover at 2:40, it looks ridiculous, it has lights built into it, thermal and night vision and IR lights too. You have a police helicopter in the sky with a bigger and better camera, is it really needed on the Land Rover? Plus the street also has an array of CCTV cameras.
Could've been a water cannon or just a spotlight
I find it weird people thin k these are cool, just normal here back in day use to be grey and the British army had green ones where they could pop their heads out the top.
I see these on the regular as im from coleraine
whats the difference of Tangi, Pangolin and Penman
I think their difference is their manufacturers
Body, shape, manufacturer.
Tangis were, I believe, built in house by the police. Pangolins are the replacement for the Tangi. The Pangolins look similar to the Tangis but they are built by an external company.
@@davimurph pangolins built by ovik and tangis built by ruc engineers
Do they have a good amount of nornal police cars too or are they mainly all armoured? As I guess those are not quick responce?car chases would be super short 😂
Most of the police cars are normal they just use those in the bad areas, as you can see in the video there are normal police cars.
@@C.CUMM1NGS yeah I saw one. In the background and obviously the unmarked one. Cool to see Irish policing
@@C.CUMM1NGS very good point! sir....
@@the15minutegamer i agree with you on the cool part! but where i live (i live in India by the way) these would come in very handy and also in India whenever, there is any problem on the streets, the police use these long sticks that we Indians call the Lathi! that they use to chase/ disperse the crowd......we call that the Lathi Charge......and well people get really hit pretty bad because those things are pretty heavy, but this is only where people/protesters are very stubborn and won't move even if the police throw Tear Gas or use the water cannons on them...... and just a couple days back there was an incident where some police officers were injured just because of a new article that went viral on our local news papers and news channels...... so i think that these vehicles would come in handy during such times
@@rebeccafionacornel6558 oh yes I have seen those. I can imagine they hurt a lot and probably get used in a bad ways too. Keeps the police safe. They are very armoured!
Why don’t they have Ford Fiestas
A ford fiesta would have a hard job standing up to a petrol bomb or brick let alone an IED, grenade or AK47.
@@C.CUMM1NGS good point! but what about those rocket launcher things that are normally used on tanks? are these vehicles tough enough for those as well, sir? because i don't know anything about these vehicles and i have never seen one of these before until now, actually this is the first time i am even seeing them.... but they really pretty cool to look at as well, i won't deny that......
@@rebeccafionacornel6558 I don't recall any instances where RPG's were used, but if one was used i doubt very much that it could withstand it.
@@C.CUMM1NGS ow! i guess then, i better keep such ideas or thoughts to myself in such cases, sir...... because as my parents always tell me "Rebecca, your ideas are always dangerous" even if most of my ideas are mainly about making bead woven jewelry or even trying to get information on different topics that interest me.... plus i am very curious and in this case i really was curious about how these vehicles would do if RPGs were used..... and in this case i really hope that RPGs are never ever used on these or any other vehicle.....i wouldn't want any life being lost under any circumstances.....i am pretty sensitive, for a so called "The Toughest Tomboy in school and college" (or at least that's my friends in school and college used to call me) i actually have a couple of family friends from my mother's side who are in defense....one of them is in the Indian army and the other is in the Indian air force.....the guy who is in the Indian air force was also my classmate for three years in school as well..... and though i am very proud of them, i still wouldn't want to lose them......or anyone as a matter of fact.... i really don't like violence of any kind....... so, i get upset very easily if i hear anything about violence.......
@@rebeccafionacornel6558 they have to withstand serious abuse, bullets, bricks, petrol bombs and such... They must protect the occupants from fire.
These vehicles would have originally back in the day been military colours, the police branding is a fairly new concept.
I can remember been up over the border in 2001 and there was tons of these, army patrols along with police

Shouldn’t really be recording these guys they take it bad sometimes and pull guns
If they do that then they should lose their job, citizen's should always record public servants in the course of their duties to keep them accountable

That IRA parade was painful to watch, flying foreign flags in our nation hahahaha
What foreign flags granted they march like the holy stone of Clonrichert was shoved up their arses (Father Ted reference).
You mean union jacks in Ireland?
Give back Ireland to the Irish, Scotland to Scottish, Wales to Welsh, independent Mercia to Midlands.
Isn't this what Britain preaches to other states, under the form of democracy?
They've been offered them back we've held referendums for them and they want to remain British,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales all have their own Parliaments/Assemblies where they make their own policies and laws,
you see unlike some other countries i wont mention, we listen to the people and give them what they want,
off course you have your typical extremists who don't care what everyone else wants and only care about what they want so they cause trouble.
Mate look im irish and sure i want it all to be ours but thats most likely not gonna happen so just live with it 🇮🇪

@Turkic.... look i understand what you mean, but well to be totally honest.....what you say sounds like an ideal philosophical thought..... but well, this is reality...... and in reality, things just don't happen...... i mean, if everything went back to what it was.... we all would be fighting amongst our own selves like in ancient times when small kingdoms tried to expand into their neighbouring knigdoms..... I live in India and according to our Indian Constitution my country is "supposed" to be a "Sovereign, Democratic, Republic" that believes in "Justice, Liberty, Equality and Fraternity"......but in reality, these are just something i personally call "Paper work" which just means "it's just for show"........ but anyway, like my mother and father always tell me "If you can't help in anyway....then DON'T BOTHER ABOUT IT" .... my parents are fairly straight forward, even going so far as calling me out if i get too worked up about things that don't bother me in anyway...... i have no choice but to just mind my own "business"...... so i think you just need to forget what is "preached" in any country because to be totally honest it's just not worth anyone wasting their precious time and energy on something they know they can't help....... sorry to be so honest with you, but well, it's the truth......
