- Pope Francis is facing calls to rescind a centuries-old policy called the ‘Doctrine of Discovery,’ stemming from a series of edicts, known as papal bulls, dating back to the 15th century, which states that white European nations "discovered" North America when they first arrived on the continent during the age of exploration.
The Catholic Church and several countries, including Canada, used the doctrine to justify the seizure of Indigenous lands.
Protesters interrupted the Pope’s morning mass at the Sainte-Anne-de- Beaupré Basilica outside Quebec City on Thursday to demand the pontiff rescind the long-standing edict.
Meanwhile, Canada’s bishops are working with the Vatican on a plan to address the issue, according to organizers of the papal visit.

Treaties are law. Do you really want to go back and try to negotiate? How can you prove ownership? Is it not the belief system that states you are not the owner of the land? Were you not a nomadic people? Basically, you are trespassers on this land? The treaties were signed by great leaders who had a vision of integration and give the ability to thrive in a changing world. Stop the entitlement, treaties and laws are written. It's up to all Canadians to Uphold them and update them as they become irrelevant. Do not make Canada weaker for some shiny beads and shells. It's time to take ownership and make Canada stronger.

No treaties in most of BC and most of Quebec. And as for proving ownership, that was done in principle in the Delgamuukw case before the Supreme Court of Canada which ordered the Crown to negotiate but failed to stipulate that the negotiations be done in good faith. So your Queen, being unable to agree with herself as to how much would be spent from which of her two pockets, backed out of court ordered negotiations and to this day refuses to recognize Wetʼsuwetʼen title in defiance of the Supreme Court of Canada.

I'm sorry, but just because we all are living in "the best time to be alive" does not make up an excuse to ignore the wrong doings of the past. That is such an abusive mentality to have. We both live in "the best time to be alive" and yet you get to experience your culture and know your ancestors who likely died peaceful deaths and yet I do not. My culture was ripped out of my family and we were told to be ashamed of who we are and were abused for it and now I'm left picking up broken pieces trying to find out who I am. Before settlers ever came, their lives were good. When they first stepped in Canada in the 1500's they killed 90% of native populations with disease alone. I will forever refuse to acknowledge our past is something to just be swept away and ignored, and this doctrine is still a symbol today of abuse that was allowed. "Terra Nullius" in the doctrine of discovery meant no mans land unless its inhabitants were christian, and if they weren't christian they were labelled as plants or livestock, not even called humans. That meant the land wasn't theres, even though they had lived there for well over 20,000 years. The last residential school was closed in the 90's, and in those schools they abused kids in every way and killed them. That isn't something you just ignore. Today we are trying to learn who we are and go forward in peace by letting people know of the injustices we endured that still effect us today while also trying to reclaim land that was stolen because that land holds our stories and our past. Many of us are broken, on the streets, and lost because of the abuse our families faced. And do NOT use that royal proclamation to justify any of the land selling. Natives sold their land because they were basically being forced to. The land the settlers had moved them onto was barren and couldn't bear crops or support life. They desperately needed the money to feed their families. I would not consider that a fair deal.
So, yes, I've done my history, and for me I think our ancestors who suffered are happy we finally have a voice now because that voice has been silenced for hundreds of years.

It's not "Indigenous lands" it's Canadian land. We all have the same right to be here. I don't need need Native permission to live in my home country. Canada is a big country, pretty sure there's enough room for everyone.
I am grieving for the suffering of people but I suspect many are thinking that if the Pope rescinds the doctrine the next move would be to try to use the rescinding to revoke the treaties and try to make a claim based on the Popes rescinding.

The people behind this current narrative are finger pointing the Catholic Church. Even though the French Explorers (Catholic) lived peacefully with the Indigenous for 200 years before John A MacDonald pushed the English (and Protestant) colonizing of Canada. Not only did he want to eradicate the “Indian Problem”… he was also trying to eradicate the “French problem”. The Catholic Church has said time and time again that the 1493 series of bulls have no legal and moral standing. It’s bull of 1537 is amazing and the language was way ahead of its time. The voices behind this narrative also no not understand how much the Protestant Monarchs of this period hated the Catholic Church and absolutely were not recognizing the Popes authority. Revoking the Doctrine is potentially a necessary next step in Canada’s truth and reconciliation journey. If it is important to Indigenous people of the country, it should be important for all Canadians too. Healing takes both an apology and an acceptance. It takes commitment and communal work. We must never forget the pain that was felt by so many, and we also must move peacefully forward together.
