Antique Fire Bell Restoration

- I found this antique Faraday fire bell from circa 1907 on eBay and thought it would make a perfect restoration video. I haven't seen anyone else make a video like this before. For once I found a project that actually SHOULD be polished excessively. I thought it turned out really well. I apologize for the large gap between this video and my last. This one took a lot longer than I expected.

I realize the contact on the hammer is arcing against the bottom post. No, the solenoid coils are not arcing. They are 100% working as intended. Apparently 110/120V is too much for this bell. I will probably use this with a doorbell transformer to step the voltage down if I use this in any sort of permanent application in the future.
One I had used a 24v transformer with a doorbell button. Wouldn’t want 110v AC running on outside of the school where it was, let alone through a doorbell switch! I would have tied a knot in power cord as stress relief. Well done
Nadia Fortune Yup. These were those thrice-damned bells that conditioned all us school kids to get to class, come in from recess, etc. many decades ago. Some were mounted outside, and just had the old heavy copper phone two-wire to power them, on a doorbell push-button. Wouldn’t want 110v there.
A lot of voltage at the time was probably 100v AC. could have been 50 or 60hz. Some systems ran at 25hz in 1907.

Sparking electrics. It's a fire alarm that's also a fire hazard.
you have become the very thing you swore to destroy
but isn't it too late be concerned about it when it starts sparking?
It hurts itself in confusion
That's sounds ironic.
No you see that's the idea, it creates a fire when it goes off so there's never a false alarm

I appreciate that your tools look like you take good care of them. When I was in school these types of bells were used to signal the end of class periods. It turned out great!
I sometimes do, begin to wonder which year this ancient fire bell was used?
Man hearing that bell gave me flashbacks of public school! Nice restoration, that final sanding and paint job is perfect. Love that you left the bell shiny, hope you use it in the shop as a doorbell! Thanks!
LOL to flashbacks of public school!

Very well done, but get a 0.1uf 330 volts capacitor for that spark. thumbs up.

Just a clean and paint not a true restoration he didnt rewind those coils
Douglas Morrison you don’t need to replace everything for a restoration just cleaning and painting will do fine if it works in the condition it is in
@Freddy McIntire Yes there is as old as that bell is the copper wire those coils are wound with are coated with shellac and with age the shellac will crack and peek THUS a short thats the reason that rewinding is ALWAYS part of restoration
Wow, you left that arcing. Madness.
If it ain't broke don't fix it
here, you will not only be entertained to watch the restoration but also you will learn how to disassemble & assemble things. GOOD JOB! you have a good memory to be able to assemble it again..

I don't know why but I find it more satisfying to see a non working thing be restored and fixed than if it works already.
Fantastic work though!!
Beautiful restoration, I can’t believe how clean that bell came out.
I see this a lot and as an electrician, it bugs the hell out of me. First off, you need better wire strippers. Klein makes amazing sets and like $15. The big thing is not tightly braiding the wires as you pushed them through the opening and didn't look like you did it too well when wrapping around the posts. Two options are at your disposal. Either tin the wires prior to wrapping them around the posts and the braiding will stay intact, you can loop around a screw driver for a good bend. Second is mostly the one I use for light switches and such. Strip off the amount you want exposed, then cut an extra 1/8" and twist and move it to the end. This will tighten the braid and keep the ends from fraying. Either method will help a lot when wrapping around the posts and will keep the wires from squeezing out so much when you tighten it down.
Thanks for the tips. Always nice to hear constructive criticism from people who are more knowledgeable than me. My soldering skills are essentially nonexistent, but I could probably handle pulling off what you described.
I can't believe you didn't mention the massive green arcs every time the bell hammer hits the bottom post! I don't think this thing was designed for 110/120V as it was advertised!
Best paint job I've ever seen in a restoration video.
What a nice, old rusty school bell. I love it.

Stunning, looks like it belongs to a 1940's police station. Keep up the good work
Its hard to say if it was actually used as a Fire bell. Or used for other things. These were sometimes placed in warehouses and Factories for when place would get Phonecalls or to signal for Lunch or quiting time instead of actually being used as a Fire Bell.
or in a school
The gunk inside looked like sawdust to me, made me think of a factory of some kind, or high school woodworking class.
What a great work you did in this one. Really like it. Nice! 👍
Nice job, you do great work.🙂👍🏼
Awesome resto. That’s how you shine a bell right there! Also is it just me or did removing some of the bell rust change the key of the bell?
Correct, the thickness of a bell's "wall" determines its pitch, the thicker the wall, the higher the pitch.
Why not removing the coils?
They are so old and rusty that they need replacement.
