I can see so many of us share a lot of the same thoughts. Your comment about simplicity.., that is what hit me after about 1 minute. I think about my $1,100+ Honda and I look at this old relic - so effective and so easy to fix and understand. My Honda.., no.., its overengineered.
The rewire alarmed me. With a Metal Mower, it is easy to accidentally cut the Power Cord. Yet, there was no Earth Supply on the Plug or machine. I would not use it until the Mower had the correct wiring.
This is some cobbled up mess that somebody threw together 50yrs ago. It had a circuit breaker for an on / off switch 😂. You know there was no company that actually produced this abomination.
The ease with which you bridge gaps with brazing shows your considerable experience. Your temperature control of the workpiece with the oxy was a pleasure to watch. Beautiful resto!
Great restoration. It reminds me of my high school days back in the 1960s when I would cut my folks yard with an electric mower. It was a Sunbeam, a nice cutting mower with two blades that were belt driven. It was light and easy to maneuver. The yard was so big that I used a 100 foot (30 meters) extension cord and still had to use one power outlet for the front yard and a different outlet for the back yard. It was light enough that I could pick it up with one hand.
I cut our lawn with a double-bladed Sunbeam electric motor! I loved that thing! My dad taught me how to properly use an electric mower, and away I went! Trying to find something comparable now is impossible. The other thing I loved about the Sunbeam was that the handle could be flipped, rather than having to turn the whole machine around at the end of every row of cutting.
Yup Sunbeam 151 great little machine, there was also the Flymo mower, no wheels, also remember one with a 12 volt car battery and a motor like a starter . Gord
Mr. Gamb, you did an ultra fine job of restoration. You gave this old mower a chance to prove what it was capable of doing. I was amazed and entertained with your video; such a professional job on both. It makes me feel good to watch these videos where some one can make an old beat up item return to its glory. You are a handy person and I applaude your efforts. Thank you.
My friend's family had one of these. My friend was forever running over the cord, cutting it and shutting off the lawnmower. It has several places where his dad spliced the cord together again. Amazing. Nobody got electrocuted.
The worst point about that Mower, is - if you slice through the Cord, it could be instant death. There is no Earthing on the machine at all! No Electrical safety!
Refreshing to see a real restoration, not some artificially aged device. This guy has some serious talent! And I applaud him for resurrecting such a cool, antique machine!
I am 85 and enjoy repairing anything. I find it a challenge. Most men had this outlook many years ago. Now a days..if it breaks just throw away and buy another. So I like many men enjoy seeing everyday things around the house repaired. My 30 year old car is in very good condition as I have done all repairs myself. So is my 25 year old lawn mower..old but still dependable. So if handy..repair and keep running. 😊😊😊
First time viewer here. I felt like I was watching a strange combination of "My Mechanics", "Odd Tinkering", "Hand Tool Rescue" and a little "Al Bladez" thrown in at the end! What a great job with the brazing!! I came in to the video skeptical, but you did a fantastic job!! Hope your channel does well and grows!
Fantastic! I’m currently “restoring” a 1959 AMF HOMKO 18” push mower, but not to this amazing level that you have done here. The body filler really makes the deck smooth and looking factory new. I was going to do that on mine but I’m just going to use it as a utility mower to do rough mowing so I didn’t bother. You truly are an artist!
What a cool friend! I have a 2 year old son who is in love with the mower! Before I fixed it, it was scared when it started, because the bearings made a lot of noise! Now that it's quiet, do you want to come and help push when I'm cutting!🥰
You, sir, have got yourself a new subscriber. Very refreshing to see some real restoration content, as well as some real craftsmanship on this platform that is oversaturated with fake videos. I look forward to watching more of your videos, this one was certainly a nice way to wind down after a day. Take care.
Holy crap that is some masterclass work. It's amazing how many little moving parts go into such a deceptively simple tool and how many tools you needed to maie this possible. You should have far more views on this.
The idea behind the center mounted handle is to flip it over at the end of the row. You don’t have to turn the mower around or walk backwards. My grandparents had a similar machine when I was a kid (I’m 65 currently) and i thought it the greatest thing since button top shoes! Thank you.

I honestly didn’t think there was such a thing as an electric lawn mower. You did an excellent job of restoring it to working condition. It cuts the grass like a beast.
At first when I saw you introduce the mower, I was like, that is a strange looking vertical shaft engine. Turned out, this is a nifty corded electric push mower. Didn't know they were around that long! Seems like that is for small lawns. 1/4 acre or so. Knockout job with it though. Was thinking how is he going to fill in all those rust holes? Brazing? It's different. I thought you were going to actually use a MIG welder to fill those holes in, but brazing works too.
I love real restoration content where it's not just something new someone bought and buried in the mud for a week. This channel is always real restoration of actual classic objects.
Sometimes we challenge ourselves just to see if we could do something. Would it have been easier and less expensive to buy a new lawnmower? Absolutely! Would it have been as satisfying? NO! Thank you Mr. Gamb. We appreciate your service. Luckily this is an electric motor with lots of torque. Any petrol mower would have stalled in that tall grass. Very impressive.
I’m not surprised to see it effortlessly cut that tall grass. That large of a motor must have some serious torque to it. Gas mowers die once they fall below a certain rpm, but the electric only pushes harder the slower it spins. Beautiful.
Our neighbor had one when i was a kid. To keep from running over the cord, he would cut working away from the outlet. He didnt have to turn the mower around. Just flip the handle over and go back the other way. The cord was then always on lawn already mowed
Dear Mr. Gamb. 👍👌👏 Oh WOW, simply fantastic! Very well done again (video and work). It's quite impressive how strong but quiet this little mower actually is. A beautiful restoration. Filling the holes with solder takes me back to when I was repairing the tub of a 1980 Hoover washing machine. I knew there was some leaking coming from the tub, so I thought would be a couple of holes and that would be it done. When I shone a torch light through it, there were literally a hundred pin-holes. It cost me nearly a £100 pounds in silver solder rods and hours of work, but it was worth it.

In a world of over engineered products, the sheer simplicity of that mower is refreshing. I bet it was affordable too.
True. Affordable and repairable too, probably.
It looks like something that a plant electrician cobbled together after the lawnmower motor seized because he forgot to mix oil with the gas.
I can see so many of us share a lot of the same thoughts. Your comment about simplicity.., that is what hit me after about 1 minute. I think about my $1,100+ Honda and I look at this old relic - so effective and so easy to fix and understand. My Honda.., no.., its overengineered.
Me too. We have an eclectic/battery riding mower. Over engineering at its best. Yet this little ditty pushed thru high grass and did a good job.
I would bet that's a home made contraption' circuit breakers aren't switches
