I think the US should absolutely do more. Speaking as an American who has watched his country attempt to forcefully export democracy his entire life. Except now someone wants that freedom and democracy and America is barely trying.

Failure of the Arab spring 'regime change' movement put a dampner on that appetite. Countries need to first champion civil values - such as broad-hearted tolerance (of race, sexuality, religion, etc.) before they can benefit from democracy. Ukraine is a highly conservative society - living in a way that is not so different from the self-suffocating conservatism one finds in Russia - and look how interested in true democracy they are 🤷.

The US is pulling back from dominating world affairs. Agree with it or not that's the way it is. It was understandable when half of Europe was under communist control that western Europe needed as much help as possible, but that's no longer the case. Europe is almost entirely free of Russian control. It must find a way to help itself without constantly relying on the US.
The US will make sure Ukraine doesn't lose, but Europeans are the only ones who can make sure they win.

Ukraine is the only non-Israel country with a Jewish president, the defense minister is a Muslim, and I’m sure other key leaders are Orthodox Christian. Former Gen Zaluzhny attended a Ramadan iftar with Crimean Tatar troops.
The war and subsequent dislike for all things Russian has caused many Ukrainians to reconsider LGBTQ rights because of how anti-LGBTQ Russians are.

Describing US interference in world affairs as "attempting to export democracy" is delusional. Destabilising numerous other countries isn't democracy. Mind you, the US can only loosely be described as a democracy, it's more of an oligarchic plutocracy with democratic window dressing.

We are playing a game with Russia, but Putin isn't. This will be looked back, in history, and the free world will be asked what we did or didn't do to support Ukraine people and wonder why? 😮 Dictatorships have NO reason to exist in the year 2024. 😢 We of the USA have been isolated from war and have forgotten what it is like. We have forgotten what it's like to watch evil destroy everything that you loved and lived for. Sad😮

@johnsmith. The game of the U.S. has and continues to be boiling the frog, the frog being Putin and Russia.
We give just enough to Ukraine to hold off Putin's invasion but not enough for Ukraine to actually defeat Russia. Incrementally increasing Ukrainian capabilities as needed to keep the Russian army mostly in place and having to expend huge amounts of men and materials to make even tiny mostly insignificant gains.
Eventually the frog will be boiled but the cost to the people of Ukraine doing it this way is just brutal.
It's clear at this point that Putin is not capable of actually taking over Ukraine as long as the west continues to support Ukraine but the drip drip of western aid that seems to continue to be the way forward is horribly unfair to the people of Ukraine and the sacrifices that they are being forced to make to continue this war for so long is simply unconscionable.

The US has spent less than 2 months of a single years military budget on military aid to Ukraine, over almost 3 years. Thats less than 3 weeks a year going to Ukraine.
Most of that is being spent paying US citizens to manufacture replacements for what we've sent.
In exchange we have gotten mountains of data on how these weapons perfrom in realmworld conditions, we have massively depleated russian will and resources, and weve been able to reassess our spending priorities for the next 20 years as we see exactly how vulnerable a 25 million dollar tank can be to a $400 drone.
Best money we have ever spent.
Not to mention...oh yeah, we are developing ties with a future ally that is proving way more tough, capable, innovated and brave than we ever gave them credit for...also, outing the incompetence of russian military has massive value. They cant even organize a schedule for turning their stored vehicles around every couple months to avoid sun rot.
All for 6 to 8 weeks of our normal military budget.
Absolutely could not have bought the opportunity if we had tried.
At this point, the only reason not to go all in and ship them everything they need is to intentionally drag the war out in order for further weaken Russia and make sure we can focus on China for the next 20 years while Russia tries to rebuild through a wall of sanctions that wont drop until they form an actual representative government.

There is a risk here that we often overlook. The Russian military is now actually larger than it was in 2022 and some of the more "elite" formations that were mauled in 2022 are now back to operational strength and fighting effectively.
Meanwhile both Ukraine and Russia are being forced to improvise on a modern battlefield at a pace that only really exists in wartime. (the whole drone and "cheap loitering munitions" space has really developed during this conflict.
While sanctions certainly have an effect we also overestimate that effect. Russia has managed to increase its arms production and continues to trade on the world markets. (Russian oil and gas is being sold as far and wide as Brazil, India and China and continues to be sold into the EU market through intermediaries despite sanctions!)
None of this has stopped them being able to make those bloody hypersonic missiles that daily terrorize Ukraine and degrade Ukrainian infrastructure.
We in the west (and I absolutely include Europe here) need to stop sitting on our hands hoping it all goes back to "business as usual" and collectively do better because no matter how "weakened" Russia may be by this conflict and associated sanctions even a weak but victorious Russia sets an unwelcome precedent.

I keep thinking back to the fact that there seemed to be no way militarily for Putin to prevent Wagner from reaching Moscow. That was only 8,000 men. Of course they were Russian and if they reached Moscow and forced Putin to flee they might have been able to take the reigns of government and access additional supplies and forces from that point, whereas a Ukrainian raid in Moscow would be an at least brigade sized suicide mission, so not really feasible except maybe in the case of a general collapse of the Ukrainian lines creating a now or never situation. Yet the action movie fan in me refuses to stop asking “what if?” .

A nice touch to end with from the general. It reminded me of another former US general (General Hodges) speaking to Ines Pohl of DW News. At the end, almost without thinking about it, she reverted to German, "See you soon, auf Wiedersehn!" to which, without missing a beat, Hodges responded with a cheery "Auf Wiedersehn. Tschüss!"

    • @jasondean88888

The US has spent less than 2 months of a single years military budget on military aid to Ukraine.
Not to mention...oh yeah, we are developing ties with a future ally that is proving way more tough, capable, innovated and brave than we ever gave them credit for.
