I just bought a mirror lens out of eBay but it doesn't have the filters, do you happen to know what are those? UV filters? Polarizer? I wanna make it sharper and I bet it's got to do with them filters
Hello 7:41 The secondary mirror is not in the middle. When blurred onto a point light source, this should produce a perfect donut. May have happened during assembly or during transport. I can't say to what extent the back focus plays a role in this. Disassemble carefully and reassemble using a caliper The mirror systems, be it as a mirror lens or as a Schmidt cassagran telescope, are a bit diva in that sense.
thanks for the review, actually the flower shot on 7:34 looks good, it has a special look to it despite being soft, if it was sharp it would've been an ordinary shot.
I once owned a Vivitar 600mm f8 cat lens in the late 1980's. I must have used it with my Canon EOS 5 and EOS 10 as far as I remember, it wasn't too bad. It certainly seemed to impress one or two at the camera club. It was well made and a sort of metallic grey in colour.
I'm also looking for a cheap long lens to do astro viewing/photography. I've noticed there are several cheap long lenses available and they all seem to be blurry. However, there is another Opteka 500mm lens that is long that seems to have fairly good image quality. Would be great to see you review that after returning this lens.
You can pick up a 4 or 5" Newtonian telescope from Orion or Celestron for around the $200 - $400 range. Tripod is usually included, and all you need is a T adapter to attach your camera. You'd have to spend thousands on a lens to get anything that will be comparable to a telescopes light gathering ability and resolving power.
I have the F6.3 version of this lens and whilst I have had better results than you have managed on an APSC Nikon it still is a pain in the arse to use. The converters supplied were useless in my opinion, just magnifying (literally) the problems with the softness and difficulty in focussing I encountered. I bought mine for moon footage too, the prices look tempting but you get what you pay for.
I wish I could comment with a photograph. I own this lens. While it will never win a sharpness contest, I have taken many wonderful pictures with this lens. Fresh out of the camera, it's not outstanding. However, after minimal editing, I am able to pull out much more detail, contrast, and color.
i appreciate you told us sir i was about to buy this as well and there was no single video to guide me so thank you very much. i wish you take one of the best pictures of moon ever taken:)
Is there any way to dial in the distance on the mount adapter? Or is the only adjustment the actual focus on the lens? I can help but wondering if maybe the lens is just slightly too close or to far in relation to the distance to the sensor. I have looked at buying these on and off for a few months though and if they are all going to produce the same results you had then I’d probably pass on it (just like you recommended). Anyways, just was curious about the mount adjustment. Hmm...even if there wasn’t an adjustment, I wonder if you could adjust it (albeit only further away) but unscrewing it 1/4 to 1/2 a turn of the mount threads on the T-mount and see if then you can dial in focus better. Either way thanks for making and posting the video. I’m still sort of curious and I’m also a m4/3 user so my results would be similar.
forgot to say full frame =500mm 1.3=650mm 1.6 =800 mm so what more can you ask for and remember 500mm ==500th of a second 650= 650th of a second etc and iso 800 works well for me up to 1600 iso and you can use this hand held down below 500th if your iso is high enough and still get fair to good shoots
Thanks for the video, I was thinking of buying one of these but wasn't sure if I could get a sharp image, you have answered the question, again thank you.
I just picked up a Tokina rmc 500mm f8. It has none of the focusing issues you are seeing. I’m guessing the old school Japanese attention is much better than a current knockoff.
I have just brought a old canon 500mm FD reflex/ mirror lens its fixed F8 i added a fd/eos converter so i can use it on my canon cameras (ie) 1d 7d 6d etc i have a few okay lets move on i have found this lens is a good basic long lens no auto focus so you need to focus your self i have taken good sharp pics and used it for moon photos got some good shots on a full frame i get good shots and no vignetteing by Using a 12 mm extension tube on a 1.3 or1.6 format you do not have this problem you can still find this lens on the net the whole thing has cost me $230 nz dollars and it works
uhmm no 2x is doubling your magnification sooo it would take the 500mm zoom to 1,000mm 2,000mm would be you using 2 of your 2x with the 500mm EEeeeekkkksss!!!!!! is your auto focus disabled to Yikes thats bad!!!
Thanks for getting to the point, Ian!
After 7 loooong minutes
Thanks for your work to make this lens work ,good movie keep it up
This lens is meant to be used with the clear filter it came with.

Did you use a tripod? Does your camera has 10x magnification or more for aiding focus?
Is one filter required for it to work correctly?

Hi Mate. I have a canon 550D. What lens you recommend to take photos from the moon until 100£? Thanks

how about using mirrorless magnifier and ibis. must be better

Hi, can I ask did you take the images with the rear skylight filter off or on during the test?
Hi, both and I tried again last night and got just as disappointing results
Micro four thirds. One and a third of what? It is actually 4:3 Standard Definition (SD) TV aspect ratio.

i'm thinking to buy one...but this is obsurd ... thanks
Just noticed this lens on eBay and thought okay who would use this, then I see the quality and it's just horrible.
For £80 you could have got a 2nd hand telescope and got a better picture.
Optically a paperweight.
Falsch geschraubt
Nasty things
Surprisingly the copy of this lens I have is the sharpest mirror lens I have ever used, and that includes the Tamron. Must have got lucky......
