Potential purchasers be aware. There are two versions of this lens, the original, and the updated. In my haste, I ordered the original version for my Sony Camera, at a "bargain price" on eBay. The original version has a red ring. The new version is plain black, with no red ring and costs more than the bargain eBay price of the original version.
Thanks for the info
Well, I'll know in a week when it arrives. I used the link to purchase and hopefully receive as per image no red ring.
This morning, 6 left, no 1 is available at this time as per the link.
They sure went fast!!!
Do you know what the differences are?
I just got mine from Amazon, and even though I specifically asked whether it was the upgraded version - i ended getting the one with the red ring :(. I will be returning. This is the model YN85MM F1.8S DF DSM. What should the new model be?
For all those wondering...
The new version is significantly updated, with many benefits to it.
- fully aluminium body (yes, this metal is actually named aluminium and "aluminum" does not exist on planetEarth).
- slightly better lens elements.
- lens coating improved, making the thing almost flare-proof and the front lens water-repellent.
- AF actuators are backed with a better firmware.
- a waterproof and dustproof ring was added at the back, by the bayonet mount.
Beware when choosing, because even the Yongnuo site displays the old version when you get to it through search engines. Take time for a deeper search down this page, then you may find it.
Same warning for most sites - especially A., where they try to fool you, as always, by prompting the old version in 90% of search results - where you must be sure you are watching at the newer iteration. The absence of the red ring helps, but it sometimes is difficult to see when pictures are not properly captured.
I own this lens (previously had a Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8) and it's awesome for the size, weight, AF and sharpness! And the value is great! Highly recommend!
I bought this lens based on this video and it is sick! I'm using it on a Sony a6600 (so, it's like a 135mm) and the sharpness is amazing. So far, I've just used it for distance street photography and can't wait to do some street portraits with it. Please stop these reviews as my wife is starting to realize I have a lot of lenses...!
Yes, It's totally nuts. The lens collection thing does become a bit of an issue!
Nice! I had 3 Yongnuo speedlights that survived over a decade of hard pro use, I preferred them to my Nikon speedlight! I was very surprised how good they were for a very low price.
Yongnuo is making quite good lenses for some time. This year they supposed to announce 23mm , 33mm and 56mm f1.4 lenses for APS-C but so far they only released 33mm for Nikon. Still waiting for Sony E-mount version.
On Yongnuo's Website, I have seen this...
"YONGNUO 33 mm f/1.4 APS-C for Sony/Nikon/Fuji".
Have a look to see if it's what you are looking for.
Thanks!
It would be great for them to add Fuji-X mount to the supported lens. Also, would like to see this compared on APSc to the Viltrox 75mm.
its a little too ig for apsc when compared to fuji or sigma 56mm lenses
if they make a cheap apsc version i will snag one. the only option we have rn in ttartisan which is also interesting
Thank you Mark. I guess I have to get one now.
BTW, I bought the TT Artisan 56mm f1.8 based on your review and recommendation. I use it in APSc mode on my A7RIV. I shot some pix of my grandson over the weekend and the images are very comparable to what I get out a Sigma 85 f1.4 I have on loan. Similar results, Huge difference in price!!! The focusing on the TT is a little slower than the Sigma but nothing really big.
Great to hear, yea, a few of my friends also have the lens and we all keep saying that we can not believe how good it is.
@@markwiemels Yeh. these Chinese lens makers are really doing it. A few years ago, they were butt of the jokes but not anymore. They have arrived. I also bought the Viltorx 20mm f2.8 and very happy with it. Soon I have to let my Tamrons go!!!
That's quite a good lens for the price! Nice video!
I know them from their solid flashes but not lenses. Now they need to make a Fuji x-mount. Thanks!
very interesting lens for sure, at this price point
I own the Viltrox 85 1,8 MK2.
It's not the sharpest lens
But it delivers tons of detail.
I like it for the slightly reduced micro contrasts.
Looks beautiful on portrait shots
I would love to see a compare between the 2 lenses
I don't think I've ever used a bad 85mm lens (like looking for an unsharp macro lens) but this does look very good.
in brazil this brand is well kmown for cheap and budget lens, its very popular with canon users
Just bought the Sony version from your affiliate link, thank you for this heads up!
This lens is INCREDIBLE!!! I'm selling some other lenses now. Lol
I bought an optical snoot, and the 50mm that was included for free was a Yongnuo 50mm f1.8. I assumed it was going to be junk since it was a freebie, but it’s great! Autofocus too. I replaced it on the snoot with an old manual and feel like I got an incredible bargain nifty fifty for my canon.
Snoots are for lighting last I heard
It is, smart guy. 😁 An “optical shoot” puts a better lens at the end so you can project a more detailed image, like a logo on a 35mm slide. Snoots sometimes have a rudimentary optical system for zooming and focusing your cookies. My optical snoot gives you a lens mount so you can pop a photographic lens on the end for more detailed imaging, and selectable focal lengths.
your channel is one of the very best on youtube
Wow, what a kind and timely comment. I have been just sitting here and thinking, "Is it time to quite this UA-cam thing?" Thanks for the encouragement.
@@markwiemels don't quit. I find your reviews and commentary to be straight forward and honest. You cut to the chase. Keep doing what you're doing 🙂
85 mm seems to be the easyest focal to build for full frame.
Samyang, Meike, Yougnuo... even at budget price they are all good !
But for me the best bokey maker ever is the Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF (version1 asphéric, not the version 2).
I have a Yongnuo 50mm F1.4 Nikon F mount. It's pretty decent. It's not the best, but it does a good job. Its all or mostly metal build. I bought it used on Ebay for about $80. I'm sure like many budget 3rd party lenses, it's a crap shoot whether or not you're going to get a good copy.
As always, I appreciate your review and thoughts on this lens. Also appreciate that you share your honest thoughts, regardless of how you obtained the lens.
Here is my concern. If I were a company sending someone a product for review to be shared with a large social media audience, I would make sure that specific sample was the best I could find. Looking at the comments on the Yongnuo website you shared for the RF mount version reveals a wide range of experiences and what seems to be some pretty significant quality and consistency issues. The specific sample reviewed here is great, but it seems like randomly finding great samples could be a problem.
B&H appears to have the older (based on another comment on this video) RF version of this lens, which I might be tempted to try since they stand behind whatever they sell. Probably wouldn’t order direct from China based on reasonable possibility of issues and trying to sort that out with an overseas manufacturer.
Is there a link to best photograph software video you done I can't find it. Thanks
We have the YN 50mm F/1.8S DA DSM for Sony and it's sharp with beautiful bokeh!
Any lens like this for apc Fuji cameras?
DxO rating on this Yongnou lens in on par with Zeiss and Sony G master
Are you able to use this with an adapter for a Micro 4/3 Panasonic camera?
I have Sony ZV-E10 and I'm looking for an auto-focus portrait lens to take promotional self-portraits with. Will this work on my ZV-E10? Do I need some sort of adapter? These things are too expensive (even at the budget end) to accidentally buy something less useful (which I found out by buying my Sigma 16mm F1.4 which is manual focus - making it horrible for self-portraiture).
Thanks MarkWiemels!
Try Viltrox 85mm f1.8 FE II, I am using it and it's pretty good
No comparison to this lens. The Viltrox isn’t even rated anywhere near this lens. Plus, the Good but older Sony 85mm 1.8 is a far better choice than the Viltrox
Could you do a review on the yungnuo 50mm f1.8 ?
I bought this lens and it is a gorgeous lens with beautiful bokeh. I recommend this lens for sure. Very nice soft shallow depth of field
For decades, I have used two SLR bodies and two lenses (85mm and 35mm) for photojournalism, documentaries, street, weddings, general subjects, and portraits (85 for head & shoulder portraits; 35 for environmental portraits).
If I did not already have an 85mm, I would seriously consider buying the Yongnuo YN85mm f/1.8 auto focus lens. I am very pleased with the Yongnuo flash units that I am currently using.
How is this compare to the Canon 85mm f/1.8?
I did use this lens for basketball game, it works well, even though the af speed is not as fast as my 50 f1.4 gm.
Great insight, thank you for sharing that.
Great review. Now I am glad I sold my Canon 85 1.8.
The big big question.
How does this 400 buck lens compare to the big daddy Canon 85 1.4 L series. Cos I love my image stabilised creamy dream maker. But the Canon is 2 gorillas so can this youngie slide in at 1/5 the price and make me cry? How big the bokeh? Maybe its all down to the IS. But if Tamrons done a Vibration Control 45mm could… …
Expensive hairs we are splitting. I may be up for selling my favourite hunk of glass.
I also had 50mm mark II on yongnuo, they say its not good as the STM lens(I guess its true,I haven't tried stm lens yet,its too expensive here in philippines) but on its price?yongnuo is sharp, even its Mk 1(tried it as well),and I even use it on a cropped sensor
This lens is bananas good. Really exciting what Yongnuo is doing at these prices!!
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis @Mark Wiemels you two should do a livestream together
Z mount looks promising for some band and concert pics 👁️
Satanic
If you guys are confused by the title, just check the description for the name, it’s not hard.
Sharpness isn’t everything. I love the value prospect for this lens, and I think it will be great for beginners.
I’m starting to value focus falloff, bokeh rendering, and coatings more than pure sharpness now.
Great video mark, ignore the haters who tell you to change the title
Agree with your thoughts here, I am the same and often speak about this in the videos.
@@markwiemels I think sharpness is important when you start creating, but character becomes more important when you define what you create
How does this lens compare with the sigma 1.4 r 85 mm?
Is there anything comparable for my Nikon D850 full frame; DX, FX?
I wish that lens for Fuji!
I bought this lens, impressively sharp
This one looks great. I have the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 for Sony and it's also very good, but bigger and heavier at 484g vs 346g for the Yongnuo. It's what I use for portrait shots at family gatherings.
How about "sun stars"? This performance realm, of course, is in opposition to "fastness" as it is achieved at tight aperture settings. It requires an even number of aperture blades. Can anyone tell me how many aperture blades exist in this 85mm lens?
Seems nice, their marketing is improving as I see many videos about this lens popping up at the same time. Won't buy it though as I'm waiting for the new Sony 85mm F/1.4 or even F/1 according to some rumors.
Can anyone please enlighten me if it is possible to mount this lens on my L mount (Panasonic LUMIX GH5)?
Would this work on my sony a7ii ?thank you for this video.
Yes.
Hi Mark, will this work well for a Fujifilm X - T20 ?
He hasn't found a Fuji mount option
EF mount?
Has anyone had success with the Canon RF mount version??
Hi Mark, is this lens compatible with EOS 5D Mark IV?
No, mirrorless only. Unfortunately, no one, including Canon, is developing new EF lenses now.
Is the vignetting eliminated on APS-C sensors?
I would say so, but I have not tested it, based on the full frame results I think it would be very minimal on APS-C.
I did try two times cheap lenses and they all failed more or less early. The TT 27 mm AF stoped working after a minor hit in the metropolitan. The fuji 27 mm takes rough street situations without stopping to work. The TT 25 mm lens bayonet is wobbly and moves around setting the focus… never again a cheap lens… there is a reason why those lenses are cheap…
Interesting that you state " no one has heard of this lens"...Here in Bangkok their are several Yongnuo brand lenses...flashes...ect on marketplace at any given time...Cheers
Great Review 👏
Do you have any review of Lens for indoor sports?
What would you recommend?
I have a Canon M50.
Nobody heard of? Sure have. Yongnuo has been about for many years. It does a 50mm copy of the Canon. Inferior - unless its method has vastly improved. Not a name I'd associate with quality but then neither were Tamron and Sigma but both have vastly improved.
Yongnuo would have to have done a ton of quality control improvements for me to ever consider buying one of their lenses ever again.
Admittedly, I got what I paid for back in the day, but it also left a bad taste in my mouth.
Hello sir, i need a suggestion.
7artisan 24mm T1.4 is good for videograhy with fx30?
i need a budget manual focus lens for my own work not for commercial.
is it worth to buy?
no XF mount ! :(
They do have some XF lenses, that I will be checking out.
👍
I like sharp lenses but this dont speak to me ... this abberation and colors .. not my story but for B&W can be game changer :)
@AskarMassalimov-ib5sq i know its sharp like a hell...i have sony 1.8...its ok light and...ok ☺ i have viltrox 16mm 1.8 and i know its new generation of lenses now
Really no body ever heard of Yongnuo, they've been around since the DSLR era and provide an affordable Speedlite. I don't believe you for this one.
I've been using the Yongnuo nifty-50 lens for probably around 5 years now and have loved it. But I've never heard of anything else they've made before! They really should get to marketing their lenses.
Looks like I’ll be bookmarking this for a rainy day. Per Yongnuo’s website, it even looks like it supports Canon RF mount natively. I honestly didn’t know anyone other than Canon were even able to make RF mount lenses yet.
Hey Mark, I'm new to photography. Is this lenses compatible with the Nikon Zfc camera?
Is the Canon version illegal to import into the US? The link you provided showed two versions for RF cameras. One had a strange mount and note that you had to push the button on the lens rather than on the camera to dismount. They were the same price. Comment?
So when is the in-depth review on this lens coming out ? ua-cam.com/video/q8HbDS7vN1M/v-deo.htmlsi=z9ocWAxGAwkt8TTP
Working on a comparison video that might be two weeks away.
Yong-who? 😉 China definitely seems to be upping their game as of late.
We use this lens on our podcast along side expensive sony lenses. It won't be replaced by a sony even though we could. Super sharp.
Sharpest comparison to what ? I see in Amazon, people who actually purchased it are not posting any positive reviews. Is your review based on another website? Would be nice to put it side by side with a native lens to back up your reviews please
Thank you
Yes, the website is DXO mark, as I said in the video, you can see all the comparisons there.
Would it work on nikon d3200
If you can find it in F mount I believe it will work as long as the lens has an internal focus motor and doesn't rely on the camera to focus it. Since the D3200 has no focus motor. It will look more like a 127mm lens though because of the camera being a crop sensor camera.
Useless to me because it doesn't have EF mount canon.
Insane value. Might have to pick it up for Nikon Z
Keep in mind the cameras used to test. The Jongnuo was tested with the 61mp a7rIV and the other ones with the 42mp a7rII.
These days pretty much all lenses are super sharp but most are not well corrected for CA's etc ( 3:13 as an example )
I use that example later in the video to point out the CA.
this thing is beautiful
That yongnuo 35mm ef clone has terrible ratings…are…we sure?
I think that was their first or second autofocus lens, released a decade ago.
The pronunciation of the brand isn’t quite right. It should be pronounced as a single word quickly “Yongnuo”, (Yongnuò) not as “Yong … newo.”
This company is well known for their flash units for canon and nikon, i didn't know they made lenses now
Yongnuo has been a minnow to date, with decidedly "average" lenses, so it looks like this autofocus RF mount lens has gone under Canon's radar!
Whelp, let me grab my wallet. Nice breakdown.
I immediately know you were going to talk about this lens. No one knows it
:( no L mount
I known, I hope the add that one.
it is flat as hell ...
Photos looks amazing, looks special. It seems like a good choice in case of object photography, thank you!
