I know you do mirrorless specifically but can you address pros and cons between DSLR and mirrorless and good cheap cameras good for low light and low noise? For example I've sold my t7 for an a6000 I found for 550cad. Hoping I made a good choice where I do a variety of styles although mainly astro and life or day to day stuff or still life I suppose. Which for me includes landscape and nature photography.
I own this lens (previously had a Zeiss Batis 85mm f1.8) and it's awesome for the size, weight, AF and sharpness! And the value is great! Highly recommend!
Yongnuo is making quite good lenses for some time. This year they supposed to announce 23mm , 33mm and 56mm f1.4 lenses for APS-C but so far they only released 33mm for Nikon. Still waiting for Sony E-mount version.
I had bought an 50mm 1.4 yongnuo lens for ef, i had so much regret buying it, because after less than a month one of the diaphragm blades shot out it's place, rendering it trash since it was a sealed body construction, so i'm completely sceptical about that brand.
Yongnuo is more widely known for their excellent line of speedlights. I've had one of their YN568EXIII speedlights for a few years that has never given me a single problem. This particular unit is comparable to the Nikon SB910. If I didn't already have the AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.4, I wouldn't hesitate to consider this Yongnuo lens.
I bought this lens based on this video and it is sick! I'm using it on a Sony a6600 (so, it's like a 135mm) and the sharpness is amazing. So far, I've just used it for distance street photography and can't wait to do some street portraits with it. Please stop these reviews as my wife is starting to realize I have a lot of lenses...!
@@Windsurfingaddict Well, I told her about the Canon L glass I had bought years ago for my 5D ($1900, $1700,,,). So I ask her to guess the price of the cheap lenses are and she is just now realizing to guess low instead of $800 or $900
I own the Viltrox 85 1,8 MK2. It's not the sharpest lens But it delivers tons of detail. I like it for the slightly reduced micro contrasts. Looks beautiful on portrait shots I would love to see a compare between the 2 lenses
no problem finding the lens for the Fuji X series in either US or Canada Amazon. For the Fuji it is 50mm or 75 mm equivalent. For those doing a lot of portraits it might be a worthy lens -- Can. $485.00. Being retired for 25 years, no longer a wedding photographer, its use for me would be very limited. I rather enjoy using the Viltrox 27 mm f 1.2 but of course it is more expensive.
After watching your video, I purchased one for my Nikon Z mount cameras. Wow! It's very sharp. I love it. I have been holding back from purchasing an 85mm because of the Nikon price. Thank you for recommending this lens. 👍
Thank you Mark. I guess I have to get one now. BTW, I bought the TT Artisan 56mm f1.8 based on your review and recommendation. I use it in APSc mode on my A7RIV. I shot some pix of my grandson over the weekend and the images are very comparable to what I get out a Sigma 85 f1.4 I have on loan. Similar results, Huge difference in price!!! The focusing on the TT is a little slower than the Sigma but nothing really big.
@@markwiemels Yeh. these Chinese lens makers are really doing it. A few years ago, they were butt of the jokes but not anymore. They have arrived. I also bought the Viltorx 20mm f2.8 and very happy with it. Soon I have to let my Tamrons go!!!
85 mm seems to be the easyest focal to build for full frame. Samyang, Meike, Yougnuo... even at budget price they are all good ! But for me the best bokey maker ever is the Samyang 85 mm F/1.4 AF (version1 asphéric, not the version 2).
Nice! I had 3 Yongnuo speedlights that survived over a decade of hard pro use, I preferred them to my Nikon speedlight! I was very surprised how good they were for a very low price.
I have two of their cheapest manual speedlights, bought them about 15 years ago. Still works like new, no cracks and no loose parts, just solid quality.
I bought an optical snoot, and the 50mm that was included for free was a Yongnuo 50mm f1.8. I assumed it was going to be junk since it was a freebie, but it’s great! Autofocus too. I replaced it on the snoot with an old manual and feel like I got an incredible bargain nifty fifty for my canon.
It is, smart guy. 😁 An “optical shoot” puts a better lens at the end so you can project a more detailed image, like a logo on a 35mm slide. Snoots sometimes have a rudimentary optical system for zooming and focusing your cookies. My optical snoot gives you a lens mount so you can pop a photographic lens on the end for more detailed imaging, and selectable focal lengths.
its a little too ig for apsc when compared to fuji or sigma 56mm lenses if they make a cheap apsc version i will snag one. the only option we have rn in ttartisan which is also interesting
As always, I appreciate your review and thoughts on this lens. Also appreciate that you share your honest thoughts, regardless of how you obtained the lens. Here is my concern. If I were a company sending someone a product for review to be shared with a large social media audience, I would make sure that specific sample was the best I could find. Looking at the comments on the Yongnuo website you shared for the RF mount version reveals a wide range of experiences and what seems to be some pretty significant quality and consistency issues. The specific sample reviewed here is great, but it seems like randomly finding great samples could be a problem. B&H appears to have the older (based on another comment on this video) RF version of this lens, which I might be tempted to try since they stand behind whatever they sell. Probably wouldn’t order direct from China based on reasonable possibility of issues and trying to sort that out with an overseas manufacturer.
I have a Yongnuo 50mm F1.4 Nikon F mount. It's pretty decent. It's not the best, but it does a good job. Its all or mostly metal build. I bought it used on Ebay for about $80. I'm sure like many budget 3rd party lenses, it's a crap shoot whether or not you're going to get a good copy.
No comparison to this lens. The Viltrox isn’t even rated anywhere near this lens. Plus, the Good but older Sony 85mm 1.8 is a far better choice than the Viltrox
For decades, I have used two SLR bodies and two lenses (85mm and 35mm) for photojournalism, documentaries, street, weddings, general subjects, and portraits (85 for head & shoulder portraits; 35 for environmental portraits). If I did not already have an 85mm, I would seriously consider buying the Yongnuo YN85mm f/1.8 auto focus lens. I am very pleased with the Yongnuo flash units that I am currently using.

I don't have the RF mount version, but think it should work ok. It has not IS in the lens to fight with the IBIS, and the lens reports the focal length to the camera body (for the IBIS to function properly) . So, in theory, it should be fine, but I can't say for sure as I can not test it.
This one looks great. I have the Viltrox 85mm f1.8 for Sony and it's also very good, but bigger and heavier at 484g vs 346g for the Yongnuo. It's what I use for portrait shots at family gatherings.
I've been using the Yongnuo nifty-50 lens for probably around 5 years now and have loved it. But I've never heard of anything else they've made before! They really should get to marketing their lenses.

Wow, what a kind and timely comment. I have been just sitting here and thinking, "Is it time to quite this UA-cam thing?" Thanks for the encouragement.
How about "sun stars"? This performance realm, of course, is in opposition to "fastness" as it is achieved at tight aperture settings. It requires an even number of aperture blades. Can anyone tell me how many aperture blades exist in this 85mm lens?
Minimum distance if 80cm makes it feel like there would be some issues using this for macro or even product photography, have you got any opinions there?
Interesting that you state " no one has heard of this lens"...Here in Bangkok their are several Yongnuo brand lenses...flashes...ect on marketplace at any given time...Cheers
Nobody heard of? Sure have. Yongnuo has been about for many years. It does a 50mm copy of the Canon. Inferior - unless its method has vastly improved. Not a name I'd associate with quality but then neither were Tamron and Sigma but both have vastly improved.
Hey mark which lens do you recommend for sony a6600 for portraits viltrox 1.8 or yongnuo 1.8 which is best lenses in ultra budget for best bokeh and portraits give me some more recommendations too
I have Sony ZV-E10 and I'm looking for an auto-focus portrait lens to take promotional self-portraits with. Will this work on my ZV-E10? Do I need some sort of adapter? These things are too expensive (even at the budget end) to accidentally buy something less useful (which I found out by buying my Sigma 16mm F1.4 which is manual focus - making it horrible for self-portraiture).
It comes in Sony E mount, and if you buy the E mount version it will natively work on the ZV-E10. Be aware of buying the updated version and not the original one, the og one with the red ring has all around worse performance
Was about to ask the same :D Especially when it comes to weight, CA and AF speed. weight can be compared with the spec sheet but the rest needs to be tested. For me i love my Canon EF 85mm f1.8 for indoor sports since the AF is really fast an mostly on point.
love your videos ... very informative ... long time z6 and z7 nikon user .. I need a great lens, low price, 14 - 120 range, f 2.8 ..I have adaptor, any suggestions.. love the review on the YONGNUO lens but have never used one.. I have the kit lens, 24-70 nikon I got with the z6 when I bought it.. great lens and serves a great purpose but not enough for those special shots a 1.4 or 2.8 wouold give. thanks for your input in advance.
Well 85mm f1.8 are not the most difficult to build and a lot of lenses are good in this category including Chinese brands (yougnuo as here, but also viltrox Sam yang and so on). But according to me even if the optics is easy to copy (not a lot of lenses inside) the reliability is not so simple and I would prefer to buy a Sony second hand than this one.
Sept. 30, 2024. I have had this 85mm for several months. My wish is macro, but I can do "closeups" in editing later. I set the autofocus on my A7-R2 for center of lens only for my many flower photos.
Yongnuo have native lenses available for micro 4/3 - the Yongnuo 25mm f/1.7 - the Yongnuo 42.5mm f/1.7 version Ii and they’ve just released the Yongnuo 17mm f/1.7 (50mm, 85mm and 35mm equivalents) respectively - they’re available on eBay and Amazon and AliExpress (the 17mm is only available on AliExpress currently)
The big big question. How does this 400 buck lens compare to the big daddy Canon 85 1.4 L series. Cos I love my image stabilised creamy dream maker. But the Canon is 2 gorillas so can this youngie slide in at 1/5 the price and make me cry? How big the bokeh? Maybe its all down to the IS. But if Tamrons done a Vibration Control 45mm could… … Expensive hairs we are splitting. I may be up for selling my favourite hunk of glass.
Is the Canon version illegal to import into the US? The link you provided showed two versions for RF cameras. One had a strange mount and note that you had to push the button on the lens rather than on the camera to dismount. They were the same price. Comment?
Sharpest comparison to what ? I see in Amazon, people who actually purchased it are not posting any positive reviews. Is your review based on another website? Would be nice to put it side by side with a native lens to back up your reviews please Thank you
Looks like I’ll be bookmarking this for a rainy day. Per Yongnuo’s website, it even looks like it supports Canon RF mount natively. I honestly didn’t know anyone other than Canon were even able to make RF mount lenses yet.
If you can find it in F mount I believe it will work as long as the lens has an internal focus motor and doesn't rely on the camera to focus it. Since the D3200 has no focus motor. It will look more like a 127mm lens though because of the camera being a crop sensor camera.

I have the kit lens, 24-70 nikon I got with the z6 when I bought it.. great lens and serves a great purpose but not enough for those special shots a 1.4 or 2.8 wouold give. thanks for your input in advance.
Is the vignetting eliminated on APS-C sensors?
I would say so, but I have not tested it, based on the full frame results I think it would be very minimal on APS-C.
Hi Mark, will this work well for a Fujifilm X - T20 ?
He hasn't found a Fuji mount option
Well 85mm f1.8 are not the most difficult to build and a lot of lenses are good in this category including Chinese brands (yougnuo as here, but also viltrox Sam yang and so on). But according to me even if the optics is easy to copy (not a lot of lenses inside) the reliability is not so simple and I would prefer to buy a Sony second hand than this one.
I'll give it a shot
Sept. 30, 2024. I have had this 85mm for several months. My wish is macro, but I can do "closeups" in editing later. I set the autofocus on my A7-R2 for center of lens only for my many flower photos.
UK Link???
Leica m mount?
Hi Mark, is this lens compatible with EOS 5D Mark IV?
No, mirrorless only. Unfortunately, no one, including Canon, is developing new EF lenses now.
no XF mount ! :(
They do have some XF lenses, that I will be checking out.
Thanks MarkWiemels!
Are you able to use this with an adapter for a Micro 4/3 Panasonic camera?
Get the EF version with a speed booster
Yongnuo have native lenses available for micro 4/3 - the Yongnuo 25mm f/1.7 - the Yongnuo 42.5mm f/1.7 version Ii and they’ve just released the Yongnuo 17mm f/1.7 (50mm, 85mm and 35mm equivalents) respectively - they’re available on eBay and Amazon and AliExpress (the 17mm is only available on AliExpress currently)
available for 4/3?
Great review. Now I am glad I sold my Canon 85 1.8.
But if Tamrons done a Vibration Control 45mm could… …
Expensive hairs we are splitting. I may be up for selling my favourite hunk of glass.
Can anyone please enlighten me if it is possible to mount this lens on my L mount (Panasonic LUMIX GH5)?
GH5 is MFT mount not L
Is it good for my canon R7.
Will this lens fit on a Canon T8i?
Is the Canon version illegal to import into the US? The link you provided showed two versions for RF cameras. One had a strange mount and note that you had to push the button on the lens rather than on the camera to dismount. They were the same price. Comment?
Older and newer version. The older got a red ring, the update is mentioned in the listing of the new version.
Does it work with Canon RF Autofocus?
Yes.
Has anyone had success with the Canon RF mount version??
Would this work on my sony a7ii ?thank you for this video.
Yes.
Would this work on the Sony Nex 6?
Thank you so much !
We use this lens on our podcast along side expensive sony lenses. It won't be replaced by a sony even though we could. Super sharp.
This company is well known for their flash units for canon and nikon, i didn't know they made lenses now
Sharpest comparison to what ? I see in Amazon, people who actually purchased it are not posting any positive reviews. Is your review based on another website? Would be nice to put it side by side with a native lens to back up your reviews please
Thank you
Yes, the website is DXO mark, as I said in the video, you can see all the comparisons there.
Looks like I’ll be bookmarking this for a rainy day. Per Yongnuo’s website, it even looks like it supports Canon RF mount natively. I honestly didn’t know anyone other than Canon were even able to make RF mount lenses yet.
EF mount?
I’ll stick with my Fujinon 50mmf2 and 90mm f2
Really no body ever heard of Yongnuo, they've been around since the DSLR era and provide an affordable Speedlite. I don't believe you for this one.
Would it work on nikon d3200
If you can find it in F mount I believe it will work as long as the lens has an internal focus motor and doesn't rely on the camera to focus it. Since the D3200 has no focus motor. It will look more like a 127mm lens though because of the camera being a crop sensor camera.
"The sharpest ever" should never meet any digital sensor in today's market unless one is doing medical photography.
Although this is more of a personal preference, this is totally a fair point.
The price difference to the Sony is not enough, eg $50 on Amazon
