As someone with Crohn's disease I get tired of trying to explain the disease to family and friends. And that I just can't change my diet and make the disease go away. Going to just start sending this video to them. Thank you

I also have Crohn’s disease and I have tried different diets to try and help. One diet started working for a bit but then I started getting stressed and I started experiencing symptoms again staying on the diet after the stressful event and I still had major symptoms so I didn’t know what to do. It’s really tough for me now to try other diets.

I had considered colectomy for my UC when I was starting college since I couldn't live my life at the time with the symptoms I was having but decided against it when I learned that 25% of people with UC who get a colectomy developed Chrohns within 10 years after the surgery. Ended up putting off school for a year but doing much better now.

One more request for a condition to potentially cover in this series: Boerhaave Syndrome/Mallory Weiss tears. It's something I wish I'd known about when I was bulimic. It's also something that I think would be beneficial to increase awareness of because there's a common misconception in eating disorder communities that bulimia can't be lethal and is therefore "better" or "safer" than anorexia.

    I'm excited about this series!
A couple of requests for diseases to cover:
    1. Epiploic appendagitis - I had never heard of it until I got it, and it was interesting to learn how tricky it can be for doctors to catch.
    2. Auto brewery syndrome- it's so interesting that this is something that can happen to the body. Last I heard, it's a controversial diagnosis, so it would be interesting to hear about the controversy too.
Thank you for what you do!
Edit for people who are curious about what these conditions are:
Epiploic appendages are little strands of fat that are attached to the colon. In rare cases, these strands can develop a thrombosis or twist in ways that cut off their blood supply; this is called epiploic appendagitis. It's not a dangerous condition and almost always resolves on its own, but it's very painful when it's happening.
Auto- brewery syndrome is a very rare condition where certain fungus or bacteria in the gut cause carbs a person eats to ferment and turn into alcohol, so the person gets drunk despite not drinking. Like I said, I think it's wild that this is a thing that can happen!

@@ksharma103 Thank you! The EA thankfully resolved within a few days, as it does in the vast majority of cases. Honestly, the most frustrating part about it was that, since it's pretty rare and presents so similarly to appendicitis, diverticulitis, ovarian torsion, and ovarian cyst rupture, I ended up going to the emergency room and getting a big bill for something that would've resolved on its own. But still better to have EA than any of those conditions.

Sorry you've had to deal with not only this disease but also family members who're trying to be helpful without actually trying to understand what and how they can actually help you. On a side note, rapid unintentional weight loss, regardless of the initial size of the victim, is a sign of a lot of very serious medical conditions that include what you have and just straight-up cancer so it really shouldn't be congratulated and it's messed up to think that, if things were a bit different, they could've been congratulating cancer instead. I hope you're doing well and are at least able to get your IBD under control so it's at least manageable for you.

    I have both diagnoses..
Got UC at 23, 3 years later I had my colon removed and got a J-pouch - and 6 years after that I started with symptoms again and 2 years later I was finally diagnosed with Chrons…
My GI doc had a hard time seeing the Chrons because of my initial ( really classic symptomatic) UC - so he only wanted to treat me for pouchitis, even though the doctor that did my pouchoscopy multiple times said that my presentation was classic Chrons, and my inflammation was not at all located in my pouch….
So - as an immunocompromised patient - please look at all the information….
I am 48 now and have 6 autoimmune diagnosis - and even though I don’t have my colon anymore, I do have other diseases that link to that through the autoimmune thing…
Oh - and yeah - I have tried biologics - they tried 3 different things, and the last one gave me heart issues…
So now I live as stress free as possible, and am on NO medication for the autoimmune stuff…. Only pain management ( for my sacroiliitis )

One of my dogs has IBD. Apparently his intestines send out antibodies when food arrives. He was misdiagnosed for years, so very poorly, collapsed often, especially in the heat, bad appetite, bloody diarrhea. He saw vet after vet, including alternatives. I get so mad now when I think of the courses of antibiotics and other medications I had to force down his throat and how much unnecessary pain he went through, and how often he was admitted to hospital on a drip. It wasn't until I joined a forum on Facebook that it confirmed he was suffering from IBD, and it wasn't until he had his first doses of SBoulardii and a hydrolysed food that he had a "normal" bowel movement. I still remember asking a vet if Hills ZD wouldn't help when he was prescribed his 4th course of antibiotics in a row, and he said no, he doesn't need it🙄🙄So he was on the ZD for 4 years, and his intestines have healed so well, I can occasionally give him well cooked rabbit and venison as well. He's back to being like a puppy now, with most of the pain grumpiness gone. He still can't tolerate deworming though, throws every kind up, so he hasn't been wormed in 11 years. A human baby colic medication made up by a local pharmacy, and baby Buscopan are all he needs occasionally now. Also something the vets said I shouldn't give for more than 2 weeks🙈 One of my other doggies has IBS, stress related from an abusive first home.

I have also had a dr say that not everyone loses weight with IBD. Although more common : there are some who have the oppesite where they gain weight.
I am under investigation after over 26 years of being told IBS and slow bowel. Had all the available IBS medications and diet changes, none worked. Now 27 and they are finally sending me to gastro for possible IBD. NHS stuggling right now though so will be months before i am seen by a consultant. I have had more bloods, stools done and they are trialling me with colestyramine aka questrant. Over a week and no change yet. Still going 4 + times a day : diarrheoa , nausea, acidic or sulphuric poop and on bad trips i get hot/cold, shakes and vertigo. Past 7 years i've been like this. It's rough. Yet it's taken so long because i gain weight, i don't lose it : no matter how healthy or unhealthy i eat, exersice etc. Nothing helps.
I am really hoping this medication works soon because i see this one being another bust.
Waiting on date for a SehCat scan. Xx

I'd like to know if fecal implants are becoming a common effective treatment and for what. And how the fecal transplant is graded, what criteria is used for safety, content, effectiveness of contents / how they're either sourced or created. Thanks!
I've heard legitimate news stories on how they have been lifesaving. 🤔🤨

I have a question and I'm asking you because I really do not have anyone else to ask sadly and you seem open to do so. When they do a colonoscopy do they use a dye for the process to either point something out or to clean something out?
I ask because to my knowledge I am allergic to every contrast used for med procedures, thus far. I am known to throw up with the IVP contrast (kidney stones l the barium contrast ( Either for the MRI or the cat scan I can't remember which it's been 20 years), the other contrasts they've used to determine where my cysts are. Whatever they used for IVF and even the contrast that they use for eye exams ex where I am in pain and cannot use my eyes to drive back home let alone see for 2 days since everything is exceedingly blurry. So in the end I ask because I was told that I need to do to my age have a colonoscopy. I'm not sure I can if it comes with a contrast. Thank you for being willing to answer my question.

my husband has a fistuala but has not been diagnosed with IBD, the drs say he doesn't have ibd and fistula's sometimes just happen. My husband had his first surgery on the fistula 6 months ago and is expecting to have a 3rd soon. Can you tell us more about fistulas? I'd love to know if there's anything he can do to prevent this from "just happening" again.
