Thanks for the shout out. I said you would love it. Been waiting for this vlog since I met you that Sunday morning. Watched this with a smile in my face. And the walk was 48 miles in 20 hours. All for Andy's man club. Keep cranking it Iain.
It's great to see you tackling the locks single handed and getting through the troubles such as grounding on the cill between chambers without turning it into a big drama. Just calmly sorting it out. Narrow boating should be a calm time. I raise a half full glass of ale to you.
I've watched all your videos. This is the most stunningly beautiful canal yet. I can imagine how serene it would be. Thank you for posting your videos. I'm really enjoying them.
Hi Robbie, I have to agree with you that canal looked superb, lovely film. The triple locks looked a bit like hard work for a single hander, but with your outstanding explanation of how the set up worked, I can honestly say I’m none the wiser 😂 no offence, love your vids, all the best mate!
How nice to be back onboard "Naughty Lass". The Chesterfiled is certainly a very picturesque canal. Your video was wonderful and congratulations with the camera work and commentary. The locks were very interesting. It was kind of you not to ask me for help! Thanks for taking me along for the ride
Robbielad! Another BEAUTIFUL vid...I SO enjoy the heart-aching beauty of the countryside. You really are living a wonderful adventure on the Naughty Lass. And HAPPY BIRTHDAY...number 26? Anyway, thanks for sharing, and looking forward to (hopefully!) many more beautifully-crafted videos from you! Cheers! J.
Robbie, I have tracked you through many, many episodes, winding through the English countryside at a snail’s pace. I find your videos extremely relaxing just a spitting distance from nature. All the green is hypnotic, especially as here in Ontario snow is everywhere and icicles are hanging off the roof. Every day I look forward to plugging into your broadcast, relaxing most of the time, only frustrated when you’re frustrated. Anyway, all I wanted to say is that your videos are appreciated, both for their quality and their personal content. Keep up the good work, as there’re many hungry people out there. Paul Telegdi
Hey Esther yeah I am sorry - just hadn't been able to find time to put together this sort of video for quite a while because of all the other stuff I'd filmed with Lou. Thanks for watching 8^)
Great job Robbie. I have to agree with you Kiverton Park to the Lock Keeper pub is outstanding and will look forward to the restoration of the last 9 miles of canal that will link it to Stavelly Basin as the last 5 miles has all ready been restored. Have a great one pal and look forward to the next one. Crank It....
Beautiful canal. I'm always amazed at the engineering and the ingenuity of the different locks considering they all ere designed well over a hundred years ago. Well Robbie will be looking for the next vlog. Until then keep cranking it
That really is a beautiful canal, great footage too. I’ve never had much interest in narrowboats........until very recently. Love your work, while you’re young, enjoy every minute of it 👍🏻
Been looking for this video. This is probably my favorite video for the scenery alone. This stretch of canal really gives you the feeling of being on your own out in the middle of nowhere.
I agree with the other commenter, but being from the US and being a woman, all these lovely areas look like great ambush spots for a small ruthless gang to overcome a single sailor and rob etc. I would not feel protected out there alone without a gun.
@@cmcmahon8551 Guns eh. Therein lies the problem. Thankfully, on the whole the UK isn't like that and we don't have to watch our backs at every corner.
Belated birthday wishes from me too. Oh the drama of those locks, they did look hard work for you on your own. Lovely scenery though isn’t it. Looking forward to the next episode. Thanks for sharing!
Fantastic vlog , Robbie the Chesterfield canal is indeed beautiful. We live not far from Kiveton and if they ever get round to restoring the bit between kiveton and Chesterfield we would be even closer to the canal .
Hi I live aboard 21 months learning all the time .don't have much data but when I have it I watch you I love your videos. Hope one day to meet you take good care from Tracey x
Another great video Robbie and superb photography. Interesting to see you at Chelsea, Fran and me gave up our life in horticulture for our narrowboat life.
Great video Robbie...beautiful canal....a load of seed on your roof is always going to be sticky!!!!..oh the joys of the English language...keeep the vlogs coming...🍷🍷
Robbie, great video as ever, amazing canal the Chesterfield, I had no idea it was like that. Triple staircase locks have always filled me with trepidation, never actually having done one, so to see how you managed it single handed was very helpful. It seems that grounding in the triple of double was not that consequential after all and quite difficult to avoid sometimes, is that always the case? The footage of the beer with the lock in the background in the evening light. Maybe it is because beer, locks and evening light are all things close to my heart, but you do have an eye for magical visual moments that 99% of other video makers just would not see.
Thank you Mike what a nice comment - I try! Yes although I got stuck twice coming down, going up was ok I think and in general most staircase locks are absolutely fine - and actually most seemed to be manned by lock keepers. 8^)
Fantastic video Robbie. Chesterfield was on my 'to do' list when I had a boat narrow enough, just never got done. Having been told how nice it was, I have seen some of it from the towpath, and agree. Now, just for your info. The carpenter who made Bardney lock gates, just before he retired told me he's made all the gates on the newly reopened upper part of the Chesterfield. Safe cruising mate 😁
I'm ok thanks Robbie. Finally got the Nuffield injectors done, had a trip and been to a show. Weather broke for the weekend, however had a nice drive there and back without getting wet.
Great to see you back been missing your vlogs I am boat hunting now for Lincoln mooring to live on and loved your local vids and pubs I need to check out lol Let's crank it !
Wow. Just discovered your channel and I love it. Literally spent a whole evening watching your videos. I run a business in Sussex, which is pretty stressful - I’m dreaming of one day simplifying my life and living on a narrow boat. For now though, your excellent channel will do the job nicely 😎
Thanks very much Julian! I love to hear about people bilge-watching hope I haven’t given you too many ideas!! Living on a boat can also be stressful too! 8^)
Yes you’ve given me lots of ideas! Working my way through your channel, you give a balanced view on everything. Although I am slightly impulsive, it’s going to be years before I can live this dream. I’ll stick with boating holidays for now. Be great to catch up with you some time for a beer.
I am jealous. This part of the canal is just storybook level.i think I would stay there as long as possible. And by the way you clean up right nice. And the flower show would have been of great interest to me. By the by what do you do at the flower show. Having been a perennial and orchard landscaper/ installer for 17 years and 4 years in a retail greenhouse I am interested. Thank you for some great views of this lovely section of canal. Thanks for taking me with XOXOX

I appreciate your videos, Robbie. They calm my anxiety here in Seattle. I also like that you show us where you are on a map. I lived on a boat in rural Washington State and enjoyed the tranquility. I always smelled like diesel fumes and local folks figured I was a live--aboard, which was fine. Do you ever use a drone for aerial photography? That would be a nice touch. Cheers!
Awesome, that’s so good to hear. I tend to watch ASMR to help with mine. Drones - I don’t know... if I can get one that can automatically track me as I’m moving along or going through locks maybe? Or an underwater one how cool would that be!!
@@RobbieCumming.......You don't really need a drone for the under water shots. Just a GoPro in it's waterproof case, I use em on the Model Yachts. A cheap one gives good enough footage and wont cost the earth if you lost it. Just tether it to a pole.
That's unfair... yes it was two months since my last solo voyage log but have been busting a gut trying to get the others out. It's not been easy working two jobs and doing UA-cam the last couple of months. Appreciate what you're saying though.
Hi Robbie! It looks very nice there! I am moored at Cromwell Lock and not going any further north as my anchor is in my Mum's shed! The micro pub at Sawley Lock was temporarily closed when I was there :( I am off to The Soar next. Loving the videos and the music, thanks!
Robbie Cumming It's okay, I just go with the flow. Have you just been in Waitrose in Newark, looking perturbed at a Walnut Whip? If not, you have a double!
Beautiful video Robbie , an area well known to me. If you walk to Chesterfield make sure to look at the church with the crooked spire. Stories have it that the spire was so astonished to see a virgin getting wed that it turned round to have another look !
Hi Robbie. Glad you turned right at Torksey and visited the Chesterfield, I almost lost my chimney on that low bridge!! If you fancy a look at some of my videos, purely time-lapse, but my trip along the canal. Sorry I missed you bringing Lou through Thorne and didn't get to film you coming in at Keadby, expertly done though :-)
I would really love to travel like this, I know it is hard work but it is something I still dream of. Unfortunately I live in United States, but maybe someday I will get to do it. I think it is the ultimate way of seeing your country.
I once met a lovely couple on the UK canals. They were British but had moved to New Zealand. In their retirement, the would rent their house out in New Zealand for six months of the year and come back to the UK to live on their narrow boat. Sounded perfect.
@@RobbieCumming I really can't remember! They were looking for a mooring for the night and we were leaving ours in a couple of hours so I said for the to tie up to us till we left. Possible the same couple. There can't be too many with the same story.
That's the first view I ever seen of the " crank " been wondering what crank it crew .. was refering too....how exactly do these mechanics work ?... seattle USA
Still scratching my head but not because of your explanation of how these locks work, more in wonderment that someone thought this was a good idea to do it this way. ‘Carry on up the Chesterfield’ not quite the same as carry on up the khyber 😉
Hello there very nice n interesting good camera work Stunning scenery n interesting viewing Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon.
Hello Robbie went to the canal day a couple of weeks ago at stavely and got a flypast from the Lancaster. The work is going FULL speed now to get it reinstated all the way to chesterfield and it"s just the bit from Renishaw to stavely left to do the chesterfield bit is just about finished I cant wait for the marina at chesterfield to be built but the plans look great it's gonna be quite large.
Welcome back. Lovely place to get stuck in the spring - Lindrick Dale and Turner Wood. I remember seeing the canal before and during the rebuild and now thanks to you, after. Are we working up to the 'Crankin' guitar, or are we having 'new' sounds? Steve ;-)
Hi Steve. Yeah man been working on a lot of new songs, but most seem a bit too 'hype' or 'gangsta' for the vlog. The songs don't always flow but will keep cranking it! 8^)
Hi there! This is my local canal and it really is as beautiful as you say. Please could you big up the Chesterfield Canal Trust (I am not geeky enough to be able to add the link but you are!)...there is just 9 more miles to connect up so that the canal is restored in full. We are waiting for final Hs2 plans so that the restoration can progress further. Thanks! Sally x
Such a beautiful canal - such narrow locks! What if she had stayed jammed and the water kept coming?? Eek... And that interesting beer. I get the unfiltered unpasteurised milk - didn't know you could get beer like that - must be tasty. Just going to look it up - possibly the most useful part of the video... Just kiddin
Yes very narrow but we would have got out of there safely even if it was overflowing! Ha ha yes look up the beer - or go into a real ale type pub and look for 'hazy'/vegan beer...
Well I assume from your comment near the end of the video that it is close to your Birthday. So Happy Early or Belated Birthday. Hope you had or have a great day. Take care and may you have many more to come. Cheers from across the pond in Alabama. And we know what you mean about it being HOT !!!!
Hey Mark thanks v much - was my birthday in May when the video was filmed. Would love to visit Alabama and many other hot places but I just can’t take the heat! Oh well 8^)
That is a lovely, if narrow, canal. Complicated locks those triples. Do you see much Japanese Knotweed besides the canals? That beer looks like a hangover in a glass. Good vlog Robbie.
Ha ha no it was ok really. Not seen any but perhaps my eyes aren’t tuned in to it - certainly see a lot of touch me not balsam though which they say is a pain. Thanks John 8^)
On those rather narrow locks that don't have cross overs. Could you just have a 10-15 foot plank you could throw across, then walk across, then put the plank back on your boat? Rather than have to walk ahead or behind to a ladder or bridge?
Thank you! You're basically inside a metal box sweating your balls off. I actually went back home to see parents last week, and to get some actual work done as the heat was so much that I was just zombified 8^)
When we saw you, you said you where dragging the bottom a lot on here, is that why you got caught on the cills? we're going to have to get to the top some time, havn't been past Forest yet. But it looks spectacular.
Hey Frank, no not caught on the cills - that would be really dramatic - I just found the boat grounded out because of the shallowness of the locks! Thanks for watching mate! 8^)
Looking at that lock gate windlass handle at beginning brings to mind thought that I'd want a leash on mine so I didn't drop it in the lock or canal and lose it. Well, either that or a pile of about a hundred or so extras stashed aboard.
He he yes I have dropped it before now but managed to rescue with my sea magnet! I had it in a holster but that got caught, turned upside down and ‘plop’! I stick it in between my belt now where it can’t move. 8^)
Scott FW not a good idea to have a hand strap on it- paddles can occasionally slip, if you're not concentrating and the thing spins round it could easily break your wrist. A lot of people leave them attached to raised paddles while locks drain or fill- again a bad idea, if the ratchet slips and the paddles drop, the windlass flies round and off the shaft becoming a two kilo pointy missile...
Really enjoyed this video. Your country is beautiful. Love this narrowboating life! I specifically enjoyed the time you spent explaining the triple lock, etc. Thanks
Yeay, Chesterfield Canal! I'm right down the end of it, the part you can't get too. There's a couple of tour boats down this end, I don't think there are any private boats. It's a little bit far to walk in my state of health, so I got myself an electric bike. I ride over bridge no. 1, past Tapton lock, usually get myself a sausage cob at Hollingwood Hub. That blow-hole you showed reminded me of the time I saw a guy working the lock at Hollingwood Hub; for maintenance, I think. (The canal was just-about flooding, another guy had just cleared away some debris from the sluice inlet.) On the first turn of the crank he had to turn the crank and turn himself, so the spurt of water which came up the hole wouldn't get him in the face! Anyway, after HH, I go on to Stavely Town Basin which is weird after the leafy ride up; it's all new and bare! Empty too, not being connected to the rest of the network yet. There's another extremely low bridge south of the basin, just the one. After the basin, there used to be about 300 yards of water before the works, but that's all drained out now; the new lock is empty and all. I'm not sure why, but I overheard something about a new bridge being made too low, and the canal having to be lowered. After Stavely, the good bike path leaves the canal and follows what was once a little railway line, very straight and flat, banked high above the countryside, and like what you said of the canal, it's lined with trees which sometimes part, giving great views. :) I see the canal again at bridge no. 18, it's in a really sorry state there. Sometimes I turn off the railway and follow the canal, full of reeds and all.
Thanks for the shout out. I said you would love it. Been waiting for this vlog since I met you that Sunday morning. Watched this with a smile in my face. And the walk was 48 miles in 20 hours. All for Andy's man club. Keep cranking it

Beautiful video Robbie , an area well known to me. If you walk to Chesterfield make sure to look at the church with the crooked spire. Stories have it that the spire was so astonished to see a virgin getting wed that it turned round to have another look !
How weird! I’ve seen the spire though and it is quite something! Love quirky stuff like that 8^)
Thanks Robin...saw you on Jono’s blog....the canal looks lovely
Robin?!!! Ha ha!!!
What a lovely canal. A great video
Thank you Chris!
Wow, great... and Happy birthday
#fiddlingwithmywhistle
Agree Robbie beautiful canal.
I would really love to travel like this, I know it is hard work but it is something I still dream of. Unfortunately I live in United States, but maybe someday I will get to do it. I think it is the ultimate way of seeing your country.
Totally agree. Keep dreaming and you’ll get there!
I once met a lovely couple on the UK canals. They were British but had moved to New Zealand. In their retirement, the would rent their house out in New Zealand for six months of the year and come back to the UK to live on their narrow boat. Sounded perfect.
I know a couple like that too. Names were Sarah and Riggs?!
@@RobbieCumming I really can't remember! They were looking for a mooring for the night and we were leaving ours in a couple of hours so I said for the to tie up to us till we left. Possible the same couple. There can't be too many with the same story.
Hau'oli La Hanau 4 year later.
I love the scenic bits. Thank You
That's the first view I ever seen of the " crank " been wondering what crank it crew .. was refering too....how exactly do these mechanics work ?... seattle USA
Oh yeah cranking it mostly refers to getting stuck into the many locks! Seattle - cool place!
Great video. Good to see what looks like a little (or less) used canal. What is it like going up the locks? I'm thinking hard work. ALL the best.
It is - but at least there's no rush from other boats waiting! Thank you for watching 8^)
Stunning canal, really is
Happy birthday ♥️♥️♥️
Thank you🙌🤓
Still scratching my head but not because of your explanation of how these locks work, more in wonderment that someone thought this was a good idea to do it this way. ‘Carry on up the Chesterfield’ not quite the same as carry on up the khyber 😉
Wow. Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
Hello there very nice n interesting good camera work
Stunning scenery n interesting viewing
Thank you for sharing your video cheers take care see you soon.
Thank you Robert v kind of you 👍
Really great episode. Beautiful country.
Thanks Dave!!
Great vlog Robbie thanks for the journey & happy belated Birthday. :)
Cheers mate!
Ah brilliant news thanks for the update! 8^)
Love the vlog! Were saving for our narrow boat now! Hope to cross paths one day 😃🛥
Great vid Robbie, very informative with sone lovely gems.
We sold our Boat last week on the Kennet & Avon 😭
😢 Aw no! Funnily enough I bought mine on that very same canal.
that view at 6.30 on is stunning!
6:30 yaaassss my favourite! 8^)
Robbie great scenery and by the way you scrub up okay.
I agree with great beer in Cheltenham got to be town of the week :)
Thanks! Sally x
Hi Sally yeah sure will put the link in the description! Thank you for watching, and big hugs to you wonderful people for your efforts 8^)
Oh well 8^)
My, my...you do look a bit dapper at the flower show. Nice!
Awesome as usual👍
A lovely little film, thankyou
So are you going to start up a canal boat flower pot show? The more canal boat join in the better the chow will be!!!
On those rather narrow locks that don't have cross overs. Could you just have a 10-15 foot plank you could throw across, then walk across, then put the plank back on your boat?
Rather than have to walk ahead or behind to a ladder or bridge?
Yeah probably be a bit dodgy underfoot (nothing is that level on the canals!) and a bit of a pain having to haul it around but why not give it a go!
Robbie, its a way, so you can ride! But did they bye the stone? Cheers stay safe.
Great video, thanks. In this weather, is the boat comfortable to sleep in? Not too hot / stuffy?
Thank you! You're basically inside a metal box sweating your balls off. I actually went back home to see parents last week, and to get some actual work done as the heat was so much that I was just zombified 8^)
robbie! I love your videos ! I have to come viset you again soon, or you me? really lovely editing work dude!
Thank you really appreciate that Jasmin 8^)
that was fun :), lovely area
That is a gorgeous scene
Absolutely beautiful
When we saw you, you said you where dragging the bottom a lot on here, is that why you got caught on the cills? we're going to have to get to the top some time, havn't been past Forest yet. But it looks spectacular.
Hey Frank, no not caught on the cills - that would be really dramatic - I just found the boat grounded out because of the shallowness of the locks! Thanks for watching mate! 8^)
Loved It!
Nice vid enjoyed it thanks. That engine is so loud in all that tranquiltiy
Ooh it’s so pretty. How was the flower show? I always mean to go, but never get round to buying tickets on time
Thanks Lorna the gardens were a lot smaller than I thought they would be 8^)
Robbie Cumming yes, I avoid a lot of things for worry they’ll be small than I hoped
Ooh er!
Great vlog as usual...Yale lock fail😀
Kingsbury Water Park In The West Mids Lovely Little Spot All Year Round
How long is the chesterfield canal. ? Love your blogs
Hi Simon... it’s just over 31 miles long 8^)
What's happening there at 9:12 with that square hole in ground apparently venting up from ground?
Exactly that - the air is rushing out of the vent as the water rushes into the lock. Sorry I should’ve explained!
Ah, that makes sense.
Really enjoyed this video. Your country is beautiful. Love this narrowboating life! I specifically enjoyed the time you spent explaining the triple lock, etc. Thanks
You’re welcome Anna thank you for commenting and glad you enjoyed my history/science lesson (not areas I’m known for!!) 8^)
Yeay, Chesterfield Canal!
Lovely thanks Ethan fantastic description, grateful as I’ve not had the chance to see it for myself yet.
@@RobbieCumming, you're welcome!
