Hi Robbie ! - Just a note about the 'beer of the week' "Old Tom" (one of my favourites on draft). When I was a 'stoodunt' at Liverpool, I went round a brewery tour of Robinsons, and the tour guide (when asked) said the reason its called Old Tom is that it (supposedly) smells like an old cat !!! It must be in brewing stage though, as it smells OK to me when I drink it 🙂 Brilliant series you are doing, love the drone shots that give it some context, the sound of your Lister engine brought back a few great memories. Pete (ex-crew on 'Antelope' (FM&C) in the late 80's)
8.5%?!! Good grief, that's more than TWICE as much as the beer I normally drink, when I'm allowed to go to a pub! I've had about four bottles of beer since March 2020 because I seldom drink at home. Two of those were 3.8% - which is fine for me - and two were special. Belgian beer from Brugges, called Zot! (Exclamation mark included.) We (the enthusiastic hire boaters and myself who form a crew whenever we can) fell in love with "Zot! The fool of Brugges" on one of our many visits there, one of which was via the canal on a cruiser. I am relieved and pleased for you, Robbie, that Naughty Lass passed her hull inspection. I have known a couple of boats that looked fine, yet had major hull defects that needed extensive (and costly) rework. One was a narrowboat that had a big area of basically ferrous oxide lace around the galley outfall. I'm genuinely pleased Naughty Lass is safe and insurable for future cranking mate!
Pro tip: Reheat pizza in a frying pan with a lid, medium high heat. Put pizza in and after a few minutes put a couple of teaspoons of water in the pan away from the pizza and put t'lid on tight. The water steams and stops the pizza from drying out, once hot through and cheese melted, take out and enjoy. Thank me later :)
Old Tom - there's a pub in a village in Herefordshire that used to sell a beer called Old Tom from the barrel. They had a challenge years ago whereby if you drank 5 pints of Old Tom, walked out of the pub to a phone box 1/4 mile away, phoned the pub then walked back you would get drinks on the house for the rest of the night. And to the best of my knowledge, no one ever succeeded. I had 2 pints one night (on top of a couple or three of pints of 'normal' beer) and it put me on my @r5e - and I used to be in the navy!!!🙂
Made it onto our boat too now . My beer of the week in dedication to you is shipyard american ipa, drinking it onboard watching your vlog. 9 days in and what a learning curve. Thanks for all the vids i learned alot before we got here
You've found my favourite Bottled Ale. Currently available from Asda on special at £6 for 4 bottles. Rich, malty and warming, Old Tom has a distinctive deep port wine finish, with bitter hops balanced by the heady aromas of dark fruit. Keep up the good work.
Hi Robbie, in Robinsons Pubs - Old Tom is only sold in half pints where you can buy it on draught. You can also by chocholate & ginger flavours - both very nice. The Robinsons Visitors Centre in Stockport is well worth a visit if you are ever in Stockport. The Peak Forest canal at Woodley is probably nearest to the centre of town - approx 2 1/2 miles.
right near our house ... wish we knew you were heading into our part of town . my Husband martin loves watching your tv programme and now ive just found you on youtube . Happy boating Robbie .
The dreaded survey is progressing about as good as one can expect. Under your close supervision I fully expect the repairs and blacking go equally as well . Go Robbie!
Hi Robbie, I'm a wine drinker and I tend to go for the lighter German varieties (particularly as I live here) - you're catching me up with that %-age! My "standard" white is 9,5%. I've been looking forward to the drydock and wasn't disappointed. Look forward to more!
Agree entirely on the beer it's superb. I know most people don't have the baseplate blacked but if that was done say every 4 years it would probably prevent those bugs getting at the steel. Keep cranking and as I said before I hope we aren't going to lose you.
Great to see the dry dock in operation. Also nice to see Ilford again. We helped crew Ilford down the Tardebigge flight a few years ago. She was being towed on a long line at the time.
O.K. Ive seen a few these narrow boat vlogs but I must say your format is rather good using google maps and Drones it brings the whole journey into perspective I can then sit back and say ``ahh so thats where you are ´´..great stuff cheers
Been meaning to post a comment on this, but kept forgetting to. My family has 260 acres of citrus in the San Joaquin Valley in California where we grow, Navel, Valencia, Blood, Cara Cara and 3 varieties of Mandarin oranges, and just finished planting almost 3,000 Lisbon lemons. We have 3 wells we irrigate with. All our wells are equipped with devices to put chemicals in the water to prevent microbes from literally eating the well casings. We have to spend literally thousands of $$ a year to maintain the pumps and motors on top of the chemicals. As our wells are 1,000 feet, or more, deep, it's an expensive proposition if the casing degrades so much it needs to be replaced. FWIW, if you ever see Bee Sweet branded citrus from California, there's a chance it might have come from our farm. :-)
The Old Tom @ 8:5% is a beer i have had before and we went past that amazing dockyard 2019 and marvelled at the swing bridges, brickwork on the railway arches and the varied collection of different styles of all sorts of boats of all shapes and sizes. Glad you are getting the NAUGHTY LASS sorted out and hopefully don't get any other unwanted surprises. Great vid as ever, take care, stay safe.
Lovely video. I bet your heart skipped a bit following the immortal words - "this is where the hole is". Glad to hear that nothing is terminal. See you again soon
Love your vids. I know it takes a little longer but I really dig that you went through the trouble of showing the location of where you and the dry docks are located. Save me time for looking it up. Thanks!
Always a pleasure to watch your channel Robbie, you’ve now got me thinking about getting a hull survey done on my boat when she’s out for blacking in a couple of weeks ! 🤣.
I’ve had Old Tom Beer, it was originally brewed by Hartleys Brewery in Ulverston-in-Furness Cumbria (where I was born). I was at the Stags Head in Windermere and they were selling it in half pints only, due to it’s strength back then, straight from wooden barrels at the back of a make-shift bar inside the pub. Robinson took over the brewery and the licence to brew their beer. I think Hartleys Mild is still a seller up in the North West. You should check out the Ulverston Brewing Co. all their beers are named after Laurel & Hardy Films and characters. Laughing Gravy beer is my favourite....This was the name of their dog by the way.
Great to see you as always Robbie 😊 glad naughty lass did fab in the survey and whoa with the ultra sound and metal eating bugs 🤪 just love the way you are so down to earth and great sense of humour that keeps so many of us smiling 🥰 x
Blimey! Metal eating microbes! I thought that only existed in sci-fi films 😳. This puts my sleepless nights about MOTs on my old Beetle into perspective. Glad you got it all sorted.
Another brilliant video mate, hope all goes well with the work that needs to be done, let me know when your in the Midlands and i'll pop some local beers to you, take care.
Great vlog Robbie.Hopfully me and esther will be fellow boaters soon.we have sold our house and ordering a sailaway widebeam from just round the corner from where you are ,wincham wharf aka narrowboats ltd.

from down here in New Zealand the hole on naughty lase looked like a small one. I am a little disappointed you TV series didn't get down here, any chance be found on the net? Still cannot travel yet to UK because of all the restrictions Robbie, and so it goes. John ..Kaiora mi. John
Robbie, I expect you already know that your series 2 of Canal Boat Diaries is being repeated from 5 April, Easter Monday to Thursday on consecutive evenings 7pm on BBC4 tv. (UK). 📺. 🤗
Always enjoy seeing the updates. Keep the boat in good working order. How long has it been since the last blacking? It looks like it was kind of ... gone.
3 and a half years - however don’t be fooled by what you saw if the pressure washer is fierce enough to put a hole through it can definitely take the paint off!!
Hi Robbie By an amazing coincidence, you mentioned Colin Edmondson in your latest vlog. I have just been in touch with him by e-mail over his booklet, "Going It Alone" which is about single-handing on a narrowboat. I'm sure it is the same man. BTW, you set off UP the River Weaver from Anderton towards Northwich. Jeff
Surprised to see a hole in the hull. Did you say your hull had been over-plated in a previous video Robbie? I thought that would give it another 20-30 years of cranking it.
Did you see the video from fox's afloat where they actually burn their poo and inhale it , would you consider burning your poo on your fire ? And do you think it would solve the composting problem ? Would be very difficult to transport any diarra you may have ?
That's 120 vlogs. What a journey I've had with you. I'm sad it's come to an end. However, I'm positive that there is more to come, Today is Easter Sunday 04/03/2021. When's the next video due out?
Great video! Robbie, do you use an external mic with your 12 Pro Max? We tried a Rode ME-L mic & it records so quietly. We've gone back to using the built in mic which is fine but when filming outside we get issues with wind. Cheers.
Hi Robbie, at least you survey was not to bad ,did you say you have to have another survey to get your license? Interesting video nice to see someone doing the survey what was the thickness of the bottom of your boat? Well Robbie hope you and your family are ok ,till next time take care keep safe keep warm,John 👀👀🍺🍺🌈❤️🥂✅
I have to get a boat safety scheme exam later in the year, bit like an MOT that one. As far as I’m aware bottom was recorded at being mostly 5.8mm plus an extra 4 or 5mm beneath the overplated steel.

Squeaky bum time getting surveyed. Great vlog Mr Robbie of the Cummings.

absolutely love the series hope there will be more, this series is on our home territory and we love walking the canals with our 2 dogs
You are hilarious and I love your videos! Can’t wait for it all to return to ”normal”. Thanks for keeping’ on crankin’ it!
I can almost smell that pizza and the beer all the way over here in Florida!
Good stuff! Now I'm hungry. Stay safe.
Hello Robbie,
Pleased to hear the boat passed the survey...
Take care.
Paul,,
Ooooh...surveys are fraught times. What an interesting place and I spied quite a few historical vessels here and there 👍

That heart stopping moment that every boat owner dreads.... "That's where the hole in your hull is..."

Fascinating watching how they test the hull. That's a good looking beer too! Thanks Robbie
Pizza and ale. Perfection.

Wowww so interesting getting ya boat service check and getting the hull re done, great vlog Robbie keep on cranking 👍

Lovely! I’ll let you know if I see any! 🍊
8.5 %... definitely a "session" ale...just as long as your "session" consists of two of theses at best!
The Old Tom @ 8:5% is a beer i have had before and we went past that amazing dockyard 2019 and marvelled at the swing bridges, brickwork on the railway arches and the varied collection of different styles of all sorts of boats of all shapes and sizes. Nice of you to present some more people, and the beer of course!
Robbie, your music is just getting better and better! Keep cranking it mate!
Lovely video. I bet your heart skipped a bit following the immortal words - "this is where the hole is". Glad to hear that nothing is terminal. See you again soon
I watched this guy on BBC4. He makes a first class programme. Well done. No pretensions or fancy speak. Beer is a bit strong so don't drive anywhere.
Thank you Robbie ...is my first but not my last..looking forward to watching you again!! 😊
I totally agree with Diane Rios. Love the dry dock living. Hope all is well. Can't wait for the next vlog. 🥰🥰🥰
Ahh cheers Carolyn #crankitcrew🙌

Love your vids. I know it takes a little longer but I really dig that you went through the trouble of showing the location of where you and the dry docks are located. Save me time for looking it up. Thanks!

That's where I will be heading. It's good to go where you know the business is professional and passionate about what they do.
I didn't want to look once I saw those holes. Lol. They seem like a nice family and place to go. Love that Cat bottle .
Thanks for the kind words, cheers!
You’re welcome Colin! Hopefully get to chat with you properly at some point!
Thank you for showing something that happens about half a mile from where I live
Cheers Tom.
Blimey! Metal eating microbes! I thought that only existed in sci-fi films 😳. This puts my sleepless nights about MOTs on my old Beetle into perspective. Glad you got it all sorted.
Congratulations on your BBC4 series!
Great Vlog Robbie. Very interesting on how a survey is carried out. Hope you enjoyed your Beer. Take care.

Ale and Pizza Hut, well looks like I wouldn't be having dinner at your place since I'm not a fan of ale or Pizza Hut .....LOL
Looked a long drop to the bottom of the dry dock. Careful with 8.5%
your taste in beer is much like my own. not to hoppy, excellent!
Love the vid and really love your music , keep em coming
Good stuff Robbie
That's a chewing beer mate 👍

Top gear is old Tom 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
looks like a great dry dock Robbie. I thought microbially induced corrosion was something that only happened to us oldies
😂
I live in Stockport & Work in the Robinsons brewery :-))))

Jeff
Oh I’ve got that book and didn’t even realise! Thanks I will ask him about it!! I know I set off up the river as I said - 20 mins upstream
would love to have the beer will see if I can find it here
Robbie, wondering if you tasted Samuel Smith's Tadcaster Porter, from Tadcaster? I use to buy it here in Pennsylvania and like it better than Guiness.
Not tried it yet but will do one day Im sure
Surprised to see a hole in the hull. Did you say your hull had been over-plated in a previous video Robbie? I thought that would give it another 20-30 years of cranking it.
Hello I just got your channel from David and Crusing the cut
I notice your beers are getting stronger!
TG for videos. 4:10 am and still can't sleep 💤💤💤
You’re welcome hope you can get back to normal sleep pattern soon!
Coincidentally, I had a bottle of Old Tom with my Friday night pizza a few months ago. Let's just say that I was well alight after one bottle.
At 2:20 "We can see the dry dock, wich is beneath the Weaver Railway Viaduct, built in 1862 is ninehundred meters long..." Some dry dock, eh? 😜
Grasping at straws there I think 😂
That was very Interesting and could be useful to other new boat owners ? 😀
Thanks Mike yes that’s what I was hoping
I really like your videos do you know where you're going next
No I don’t, but I would like to head north to Yorkshire
I am a big fan but I don't live on a narrow boat I wood love to see you as well. I really wood love to live on a boat because its around nature
Also my proper name is Henry
Did you see the video from fox's afloat where they actually burn their poo and inhale it , would you consider burning your poo on your fire ? And do you think it would solve the composting problem ? Would be very difficult to transport any diarra you may have ?
I’ve not seen that sounds smelly 🤢
That's 120 vlogs. What a journey I've had with you. I'm sad it's come to an end. However, I'm positive that there is more to come,
Today is Easter Sunday 04/03/2021. When's the next video due out?

Thanks! I use a Rode smartlav + with minifurs they are brilliant
@@RobbieCumming Perfect thank you!
I’m guessing it’s steel do they make narrow boat out of aluminum? And is galvanic corrosion on aluminum as also as iron/ steel hulls ?
All great questions to google my friend!
Just seen your programme on TV this evening. So …. just wanted to ask. Are you giving up boating for your family and friends or not?
Wonder why specifically a slaters pick hammer?
How do they put blacking on the hull, where it is resting on the wooden beams? Or do they leave a stripe?
Is that a bearing knock ? Don’t want you to damage your diesel motor now do we !have you considered electric? Quasi ale? Please explain not fimular with you use of the term quasi with ale ?
Bearing knock? Quasi ale? I’m so confused right now
Do you have a different type motor than most of the narrow boats or do they have a different one cuz yours is teams noisier and the others are quiet that I watch on UA-cam
good vid keep up the vids on the cut from lee
How often do you have to have this inspection for your insurance Robbie?
Every three years I’ve been told - depends on the age of the boat (mine was built 40 years ago)
did they not bleach the hull?
How often do you have to do this type of survey, annually?
God no - i only had to because my insurance company wanted to know what state it was in as it’s an older vessel
