Lyrics:
It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain's starting to slip away, hey hey
I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
Think I want you still
But there may be pills at work
Do you really wanna know how I was dancing on the floor?
I was trying to phone you as I'm crawling out the door
I'm amazed at you, the things you say and that you don't do
Why don't you ring?
I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I'm walking up surrounded by me
A&E
It's a blue, bright blue Saturday, hey hey
And the pain's starting to slip away, hey hey
I'm in a backless dress on a pastel ward that's shining
They gotta watch you still
But there may be pills at work
How did I get to accident and emergency?
All I wanted was you to take me out high
And I was feeling lonely, feeling blue
Feeling like I needed you
Like I hoped you'd call and hoped you'd see me

There's a really understated sense of humour to most things Goldfrapp produces

Back then, a dear friend of mine always would say this reminded him of me. As I went through drug addiction, nearly died 3 times and came out the other side. Times change as do people. But Jambo, I’ll never forget the help you gave me x
The significance of the video is that nature has the power to heal a broken heart and just as the seasons so too will our suffering pass.
I love your analysis. and I LOVE this video!
No one else could make this as good…..her voice is perfect!
My most played song in the 16 years I’ve had iTunes ... at last count played 1,749 times! Such a beautifully written and composed song that I never tire of.
Oh me too, was and still am obsessed with it, the musical complexity and layers is just amazing
If you like the layered orchestral synth sounds and haunting melody I think you would like the Moody Blues. Nights in White Satin is is a gorgeous song but only a small taste of the Moody Blues. Gypsy and Candle of Life are two of my favorites.
😫💜! Amazing!
I love everything she has ever done 😊❤️
Absolutely! Very well said! Isn’t it funny how one can’t explain the magnificence of art? You can only experience it for yourself!
When the video to this song starts out, it builds up to a rather happy, rapture of pleasure... and then that moment, because you're listening to the lyrics, as well, your heart suddenly sinks, because this is about something heart-wrenching and bleak. What a beautiful video... Goldfrapp, you guyz never cease to amaze me with your art, man. Love! 3:)
They never fckn cease tae fckn amaze me n aw
Haven't heard this for ages. Still brilliant!
One of my favorite Goldfrapp songs.
every time I hear crows I think of this song...its such a crafted song, love it. Thank you Goldfrapp
Great song and very much under rated and appreciated.
How can this utter masterpiece have less than 1m views?!
i have seen this woman live she is the most amazing performer i hope she carys on
What a clear voice! I wish I had known her from further back : )
Brilliant! - First advised to me by the Grert, Late Andrew Weatherall (1st album), been a fan ever since!
still beautiful and fresh
magnifique !
Still loving this song after years and years of listening to it on my way to work. Makes my day automatically better.
This song is beautiful.
Very Nice !!
I love GoldFrapp!
I Love This Song, Is Beautiful
Favourite Goldfrapp Song LOVE IT!
Loved the song and now I love the video too.
Very creative and strangely tender with that friendly dancing leaf monsters.
This album is full of great songs. Love this kind of new direction in the sound of Goldfrapp.
Pra vc Gi aaaaauu
One of the BEST women in music! :D
Such an underrated song in my opinion
I like them and this song is amazing!!I'm in love with it...
this song really truly touches my soul, is there any other songs like this?
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill.
Espectacular en HD!
A great video. Its not just Europe. Everywhere has great if they allow people to express themselves. The proximity to a time when they were controlled, often indicates how free they feel, but sometimes, it is the inverse.... there's really no math that can be applied to it. Hunt out what's great... the finding of it; that makes it even more great than being able to say "The BEST stuff only comes from _____". It's the finding of it, the obscurity, perhaps even that makes it better.
the earth in time knows excellent end to reveal him at
the other side
Playing this in A&E during the pandemic. Just for the lols.
Someone tell me what they reckon the song is about.. Only recently I found out A&E stands for 'Accident and Emergency'. So I'm thinking 'dancing on the floor' means she was having seizures.
Goldfrapp is you song one my favorite ;)
awesome video!!! dancing leaves are cool!!
2023 😍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Wonderful song.
Ame!! me encanta Goldfraap :)
146,669? thats totally unviewed! :o
This is still heartbreaking played at 1.25 speed.
Lovely bushes! :)
u gotta love a bush that dances! lol
songs in the key of A&E - Accident & Emergency - SpaceMen3
A farcry from the sheer geniality of Felt Mountain
Been a Goldfrapp fan for years now and still amazed at the pretentiousness of the hardcore Felt Mountain fans.
A&E... I'm from North America, so I thought the title meant Adam and Eve instead of the equivalent of the Emergency Room. I wish I'd known long ago what this song was about.
I've had too much experience with suicide attempts and spending hours in the cold white of the hospital. It's such a surreal experience, being admitted to the ER. Nothing seems real.
As have I. Many 72 hr holds for “mental un stability” before I was 21
Your not alone friend, I’m here, I love you. Remember me when you’re on the edge again.... take my hand, I’ll bring you back ❤️🙏🏻🌈
My first impression carried me to remember the movie "La Vallée", by Barbet Schroeder with soundtrack by The Pink Floyd... rsrs...
Como é que eu vim parar no pronto-socorro?
Tudo que eu quis foi que você me tirasse de lá
Eu estava me sentindo sozinha
Sentindo-me triste, sentindo que precisava de você
E eu tinha esperanças de que você ligasse
Eu tinha esperanças de que você me visse
Pronto-socorro
Yeti's at the weekend. Alcohol is big problem for all people.
Someone said this reminded them of Siouxsie and the Banshees song the Rapture. I don't get it.
@booth231 As a fellow American, I second that apology!
@NinkaPanda all the vids keep getting deleted by the video assassins :(
@Literarymasochist i don't get why great european bands are unknown in the US but we have to listen to all the shit that comes from there.
Alison Goldfrapp is old enough to be my mother...this feels weird
I am here because of Sophie Ellis Baxtor... What an under rated song
are those monsters from Doctor Who in this with her?
just beautiful,,,,check out the new album 'tales of us'....single drew
OK Go video .. lol
capitain McMillan? are you?
hahahahaha
The one song that can always have me breaking my heart crying everytime I hear it. It sums up loneliness and wanting someone so much to give a damn. Waking up surrounded by me, a feeling only certain people will understand.
Hoping someone will come and save you, but they don’t.
I’m sorry no one came to save you, Mum.
I gotta say, more than nearly any other song, this one always breaks my heart. It sounds like a normal sentimental love song, but listen to the lyrics and you learn its about someone who wakes up the next day after attempting an overdose suicide because of their broken heart.
Woah. I've just realised that.
That’s what the story is! Your 100% right! I started to observe that this song an the video reminded me of someone who is a victim of a kidnapping at a club on Friday night and their body was found in the middle of the forest… and she’s waking up confused and disoriented… but your interpretation makes much more sense!
THATS THE ONE
So true ❤️🩹
The "suicide" connection is a STRETCH...
As the Lyric states "I want you still"...
Seems Alison is merely describing her SHEER Disappointment of Waking Up Alone in bed in her beautiful backless dress...
Thank you for considering my thoughts...
As big of a genre shift as this was for them, this is hands down my favorite Goldfrapp song. It really is the definition of beautiful.
Indeed. We'd had Black Cherry & Supernature before this album was released. It took me some time to adapt back then, but it's my all-time favourite album of theirs now. It was the song "Road To Somewhere" that first hooked me in. Seems like a lifetime ago now! If I had to pick a favourite song (which isn't really possible), it would be "Melancholy Sky".
It IS beautiful.
I was a huge Goldfrapp fan up until this album... I just wasn't ready for it when it was released, and I stopped listening to them for years.
Now I'm going back to listen to Seventh Tree and everything they've put out since. My favorite album used to be Supernature...but now, Seventh Tree has easily surpassed it. I'm annoyed at my past self for not being able to see how good this was at the time. On the other hand, I'm kinda glad. It's like I'm getting to discover Goldfrapp all over again, and it's awesome.
Right On !!
I kind of Grew up in the Woods ( dirt bike Riding/Kegger Parties lolol So I get such a Kick out of watching the Foliage/leaves come Alive taking Human Form and Dancing Around ! I have never seen anything like it before nor since ! Allison has Great Voice !!
@@MsFuzzipoo I know Exactly what you mean ! Thank God for You Tube !! LOLOLOLHAHA
Only discovered Goldfrapp recently at 53 years of age . Loving their style. 💎
Wow your in for a treat
I discovered them back in '98 or so when Strict Machine was used in a GameBoy Color ad. I emailed Nintendo asking what the song was and got an answer the next day, downloaded the song, and from then on I was a fan not only of Goldfrapp, but the tech revolution.
@@akiramenai4973- Strict Machine is off their second album Black Cherry which was released in 2003.
Revisiting during Covid 19 lockdown .. what a tune while I'm feeling lonely, feeling blue...
yup .... you should look up "saying something" justin timberlake .... yup i know
not a good guy ... but trust me ... its a bit special :-)))
Alison Goldfrapp = 21st Century's Kate Bush
Absolute perfection. What a poet. Love Alison Goldfrapp.
One of the dancers is called Russell.
Another is called Leif
He's branched out since then, but he always goes back to his roots
You're 'barking' mad, the pair of you!
You can try & think of a few more puns, but you'll soon get 'stumped'.
Time you both 'logged; off!! :-D
i just twigged what you're all talking about. i did knot get it for a second.
Wood you all shut up
Seventh tree is a masterpiece 🖤
Masterpiece IMHO this album is indeed. Not a lot of those to be found. This song has a chipper sound but is haunting. "all I wanted was you to take me out": methinks she is talking to the pills she took. that's a darkness that we all dread facing.
Still listening in July 2024. Still brings all the feels. 🩶
Saw them live 3 times. Beautiful underrated band.
Lucky you!!
Never seen them tour in the US. Been into Goldfrapp for 14 years
I never knew she had a video to this. I love this song, and I really enjoyed the video.
Just everything about this song.... masterpiece!
I have probably seen this video 1000 times... im over analyzing it like wayyyyyy toooo much. I love it, crafted with so much detail and love... just like the song.
I bought Seventh Tree when I was really young, listened to it once and shelved it. Roughly one month ago UA-cam recommended that I listen to 'ride a white horse' and since then I have rediscovered my love for this band and this album in particular. Seventh Tree is a truly fantastic album and A&E is frankly beautiful. More of the same please Goldfrapp!
Seventh tree was my 1st real wake up to Goldfrapp, every song is stunning, then i discovered Black cherry, years apart, many many years later. As with sexy sultry Moloko
Goddamn, this (and Happiness, and Caravan Girl) just make me swing from tears of sadness to tears of joy. Nothing quite like a Goldfrapp binge after staying up all night with red wine.
i absolutely agree! Did help me out of crisis and sadness.
Perfection! Alison Goldfrapp is last relevant visual music artist.
How GENIOUS thas is. The video, the rythm, the melody, the lyrics, everything. Should have been a worldwide smash hit! Goldfrapp has so much hidden gems to discover! It's timeless, it's unique, honey for the ears!
And so it was that this song played in my head as I waited at A&E for a psych evaluation. 🌺
I hope things are improving for you, friend.
Forrest creatures, Alison with her appearence and beautiful voice and at the end Will with a cup of tea...all of that makes this video so special :-)
It's the cup of tea makes it!
Bliss, Goldfrapp have never disappointed, they make great music, emotive, melodic and with a touch of odd.
I could eat Goldfrapp's music... all of it. And save my favorites for dessert... all... at... once. 3:)
Their music is totally underrated and Alisons voice is by far one of the best around! Loving it
such a sad song about a woman taking an overdose and ending up in A & E - classic
This is so relatable to me....a couple years back (shortly after lockdown began) I just thought FK it ...I'd had enough because I felt like my life was in ruins and my mental health in tatters ....so I just wolfed down sleeping tablets and thought "to hell with it" ...the next thing I knew it was a couple days later in A&E (only briefly conscious) and then next time I woke once again it was evening on the ward.....I'm not a weak person....not that attempting suicide makes you weak ....I just didn't try because of the COVID lockdown, alot of things had happened in my life that culminated in this ...making real music like this all the more emotional and powerful....goldfrapp is so hugely and terribly underrated ...I've been a fan since "black cherry" ,..bought the CD at 16🤗😊
A favorite from Seventh Tree and this version looks stunning compared to what was available before. I'm glad to see more of these restorations making their way onto You Tube. XX
In the music she says:
"How did I get to accident emergency?!"
so, A&E = Accident & Emergency.
@I like frogs A lot of people in the US know it only as the ER (the Emergency Room).
And unfortunately, us 'Mericans aren't known for our knowledge of other countries... we REALLY could benefit from learning about other counties, but so many of us (especially right now) refuse and shove our heels in deeper 🤦🏻♀️...
Sadly, what's obvious to you isn't so clear to a lot of people who share my nationality, but hopefully that'll change someday... a gal can dream, right?
@@MsFuzzipoo I wouldn't worry to much about it.Seeing as the whole human race.Isn't that bright.Even know some think they are !!
I sang this *so* many times at the local Karaoke bar. I thought I was doing great, but nobody cared.
Everybody was just requesting "Bad Romance".
I still have not heard any of her songs that I have thought:"I don't like that"
who here in 2024?
Yep yep, still sounds great!
A beautiful and sad song about wanting companionship! I love her singing voice and the musical arrangements.
This video makes me giggle and burst of joy. The dancing leafs bodies are just terrific. Such smooth transitions and seeing Will at the end is just the ticket. Love it xx
I love Goldfrapp, she has such a huge vocal range in this song.
takes me back to my 20s beutifull women/gym/bank full of money lol then life got harsh hahaa
I hear ya mate ! Getting old is shit :(
Gosh, Alison has a voice like an angel, all her songs are amazing. She reminds me sometimes of Kate Bush's voice, but more melodious
OK to address the incorrect analogies of the song. Alison said this song was written about a visit she made to the accident and emergency department but she didn't say what she was there for. Upon analyzing the lyrics its clear the song is about a suicide attempt with pills that landed her in the A&E. Ive found this song really relevant to my life recently relapsing on drugs after being in love with someone i couldn't be with.
Thank you. I can't understand how people don't get this song ... it always seemed obvious to me, even before I'd ever known what Alison said about it. I hope your'e in a better place mentally now.
was it your dad
equally Alison is a fantastic storyteller and fantasist, as is Kate Bush and a lot of the great songwriters. The songs are not necessarily about themselves, or at least not completely. I would probably assume that the song isn't (completely) about her personally, rather than she can empathise extremely well and put herself into a character's shoes to write the song. I found the quote you mentioned and she said "It was inspired by a few hours I had in A&E on a Saturday afternoon. It was nothing serious but I remember they pumped me up with loads of painkillers. I was standing there looking at all these rugby players coming in on trolleys - arms up there, noses round there. They were in those weird green gowns they make you wear and it was all a bit surreal. And I suppose A&E is a sort of metaphor for a relationship that was going horribly wrong. That's all mixed up in the song too."
Love her voice ❤️ and the Will Gregory is killer on the music production
I’d like to emerge from the leaves like that in my local woodland, scare the dog walkers innit 😂 great tune.
I always thought the intent was obvious, but apparently not ... the song is quite sad. It's about a girl who has just gone through a break up and overdoses because she's sad and lonely and misses her ex. She wakes up in A & E (the backless dress is a hospital gown) and hoped that maybe he'd stop by and see her ... but he never does. He never even calls to see if she's ok.
Still remember coming down to my family computer to watch this video before going to high school...this and checking the updates on Smash Bros Brawl
I love this song. I love Goldfrapp and all they do. But I really dislike this video which instead of adding to the song, detracts from it. The lyric 'I was feeling like I wanted you/And I've woken up surrounded by me' is superb. Especially the 'surrounded by me' - there is a small pause before the word me, and the whole phrase just conjures up someone whose troubles have led them to be in an A&E ward with tubes and drips and machines and constant monitoring and deep in the middle of their own woes instead of being deep inside a loving relationship - and we are watching people dressed in leaves prancing around, The only part I like is when Will's camping kettle boils at the end and he makes a cup of tea.
+Steve Wise thats music videos for you, sometimes they relate to the lyrics, sometimes they're just there to compliment the instrumentals
Many great songs of the last 25 years have poor music videos.
I've been in the emergency room (North American alternative of A&E) for mental health crises before, and the situation is rather surreal. I imagine the A&E visit described in the song was even more so. I think the music video could fit under the perspective that the leaf dancers are meant to create that surreal atmosphere. When Alison is shown at the beginning, lying down and turning over limply -- I see someone who knows what it's like to find themselves emotionally numb, staring blankly at the ceiling.
In fact, her body language throughout the whole video seems almost catatonic, as if she's merely "going through the motions"... It breaks my heart, now that I think about it. "Think I want you, still, but it may be pills at work..."
whenever I need soothing I come to goldfrapp
+Psychokitten113 that's what I do as well
