I received the same lack of curiosity from my psychiatrist. After he saw me as a patient in severe suffering for years, when I became well, he began to question whether I was ever sick. And this was a decent doctor who was very conservative in his approach to prescribing medication. 😢 I wish he was excited to help his other patients experience the profound transformation I had!

You raise a good point in your second sentence: when a non-mainstream treatment ends up working well, the response is to question the validity of the diagnosis (i.e., whether the patient was faking illness) as opposed to regarding evidence of positive outcomes as a contribution to the field. It's disappointing to see psychiatry operating on the principle that "the person is the problem" in order to avoid culpability for its own missteps and poor judgment calls.

I can totally relate to the adulting process. I live with my parents, and they see me getting better on medical keto. They are gradually letting me take on more of the responsibility I would ideally be handling on my own. Mom doesn’t fold my laundry as much, help me with dishes as much, they ask me to watch my nephews on my own when my sister drops them off for a few hours. At first I was like “what?” But I honestly wouldn’t have it any other way. Happy Anniversary Rob and Lauren!

There's no taste worth it to make yourself sick again. Also ancestral foods rich in fats and proteins are what the human kind evolved on. Our body and mind prefers it. We're just conditioned through colorful advertisement that sugary grain based junk food is for pleasure. It's not! Good point Rob, it is evident in the clinical healthcare industry that we have to depend on our personal advocacy. That requires us to basically educate ourselves to communicate up to the point of being close to a clinician as well. That is what has impressed me so much with this journey, Lauren and Rob had to get into the trenches to go toe to toe with the providers. You are both inspiring humans! ✌🏽

Yes, when Rob said, “this should really be patient-led,” I was jumping for joy that someone without a mental illness could see this important truth.
It’s so silencing to know this logic in your bones without having any outlet (surveys, client liaison, exit interview) for input to providers on what works and what doesn’t.
As a result, people continued to be offered the same old “best practices” (as defined by ??) help that isn’t actually helpful, and leads to despair and disempowerment.

Hi Lauren. About a month ago, I saw your videos about medical keto and how the diet has been helping you (as well as many other people with mental illness). At the time, my depression and anxiety were absolutely awful - my current medication wasn't doing its job well anymore, and I was sinking. Seeing your videos inspired me to try keto, and, although I can't say how effective it has been with my mental health because I also changed my medication plan since then, keto and dieting have become such an important and positive part of my current life. It has brought me so much joy, challenges that I'm proud of myself for facing, opportunities to learn about how I can take better care of my body, opportunities to expand my creativity and scope in the kitchen, good habits & new routines that keep me afloat when I'm starting to feel low again, etc etc. I'd like to believe that keto, the experiences I've had through this new diet and the new medication have all significantly contributed to this incredibly positive-change I've recently had. Less depressed, less anxious, more confident, happier..
I am grateful to you for sharing your story and giving me this push into keto. Thank you so much. (I'm cheering for you!!)

@tiny-lightningr-tv4ly I have not experienced any symptoms for the past 3 years, so there is no management currently. I was diagnosed after two psychiatric hospitalizations. For the first 3 years of my disease, I managed by attending individual therapy, taking medication under the care of a psychiatrist, and attending healing prayers at church. I did a lot of work addressing psychological trauma, forgiving, and praying to Jesus to heal me. With time and treatment, my symptoms decreased to the point where I no longer had symptoms, so they reduced and eventually took me off the antipsychotic medication. There were many times when I thought I would never get better, but I believe I was healed by God, based on my spiritual experiences! So I wanted to share my experience, in case it helps anyone. If you by disaster mean a lifetime in an institution. Be happy that he's 20 now and not 30 years back. A lot has changed for the better. @@ciobalina7445 I assume you're aware that:
      1. 99% of psychotic episodes eventually, or quickly, resolve without medication
      2. Hallucinations are very common, and can be reliably produced by no more than sleep deprivation, sensory deprivation or prolonged stress
      3. All antipsychotics carry some risk of lethal and maiming side effects, taking them reduces life expectancy and results in excess deaths. They SHOULD be taken when necessary, but NOT otherwise.
      4. People with schizophrenia are only half as likely to carry out violent crime, compared to the general population. But twice as likely to be a victim of crime, compared to the general population.
      5. The above come from reliable sources online. The 99% figure I think was a Dutch or Scandinavian study, the crime figures, an Australian one. The excess deaths caused have been noted and led to guidelines aiming to reduce the usage of these medications in Scotland amongst other places. Hallucinations information comes from military studies, research on sensory deprivation and population surveys which found the majority of standalone psychotic episodes are never reported to healthcare professionals. Information on medication side effects comes from patient leaflets included in the packets and from public health data.
After my first psychotic episode, we didn't inform medics, I recovered in 3 days, had no medication, and had no more hallucinations for 20 years. It was prolonged stress, exhaustion and loneliness. Circumstances.
My next episode lasted longer, because my circumstances were worse, and led to medication for 2 years, AGAINST the guidelines saying I should be taken off it within 6 months. I had to fight to be allowed off it. I experienced 100% depersonalisation during those full 2 years, which lifted in a week when I came off it. Plus another 28 side effects. Again, it was prolonged stress, exhaustion and loneliness. Circumstances.
I've not had any hallucinations in the decade since. This time, I sorted my circumstances permanently.
Antiquated stigmatisation, often by people with irrational fears and urge to control others, who I've found play around with illegal, psychotropic drugs themselves as often as not, is unhelpful.

I totally understand your bafflement of your psychiatrists lack of interest. But for most people with your disorder , most just go off meds and have a total mental health catastrophe. You have gone above and beyond to make so many changes to help you wean of your meds which is why you are being successful with it! Keep doing you for your own health! You have been so cautious with this and you are truly an exception to the rule with decreasing your meds! I pray that you continue on and are successful with no speed bumps in the road. Most people would not do well with what you are doing!

I'm planning to be a psychotherapist, and the keto diet always peaked my curiosity, I started learning about it through health studies for it's effectiveness with weight loss, heart disease, diabetes, but over time I increasingly saw so many individuals talking about how beneficial it is to treat many, seemingly unbeatable disorders, including cancer even at stage 4 (like Mr Guy' incredible story) , bipolar, and now schizophrenia, epilepsy.. Experts of both the medical field and the mental health field are not doing enough to learn about Keto's potential. There's so much potential and very little research which simply doesn't make sense. Most of what I've learned about it is through individuals' experiences like yours. Thank you for covering this very niche topic extensively.
I think the main issue is that most big pharmaceutical companies are not incentivized to research or promote the keto diet because most would rather keep selling their addicting medications instead of seeing people doing well simply using a diet they can't profit off as much. Why would they fund such research..

Holy Christmas, Lauren, you medalled! 🎉🎉🎉🎉 That’s very cool! And a testament to how well you can set a goal in your mind, follow the steps to achieving said goal, and achieving that goal (even while still in med tapering/withdrawal!)
You could teach me a few things about functioning through withdrawal (chronic pain, chronic physical illness, chronic mental illness - I’ve been in withdrawal many times - and it sucks).
Funnily enough, when we moved in, I ended up on a keto diet (we couldn’t get groceries from 2 places yet, so I ended up making do with what I had - which was mostly protein/fat and I couldn’t eat any carbs because Celiac/nut/peanut allergies, and they didn’t sell GF bread or crackers that didn’t have nuts in them).
And you know what? It was the best I’ve ever felt mentally and physically.
Thank you for documenting this - my care team (it just keeps getting bigger, as parts of me malfunction - we learned I have Ehlers-Danlos in 2018 (I was born with it - it was just "Mystery Illness and Mystery Pain" for 33 years first. I was sure it would need to be named after me)) includes a dietitian - so I’d need to get some input from her - but I think they’re ecstatic when I eat protein 😂

If you focus on staying in zone 2 and 3 only for your runs, you can rebuild your cardio structure to match your Central Nervous system which has just gone through a major restructuring with keto. It’s not fun watching your overall pace go down but eventually you will improve that by using the zone 2, 3 as a running strategy for a while.
