      1:54. So many foremen and journeymen over complicate. They won't teach you the most efficient way because they don't want you to then do the job better. They don't want people after their job. Residential construction is usually straight forward, and shouldn't be that hard to teach. You're working with wood too, so it's not like you're drilling into metal studs with tech screws. And wood is easier to saw.

      Thanks guys feel lil smarter that i knew that, but really feel slow where something possibly flew over my head. He mentions that, to get the stud height(to be able to cut all studs one time ) you measure the height of the wall then add the thicknes of 3 plates (1 1/2 x 3 = 4/12 inches) and subract that amount from the measured height, to get stud height. This confused me, because if the stud fits between 2 plates why are we subtracting 3.
      So in my mind its like this, if i have a wall i measured 100 inches, i am making a frame to fit that,frame height is 100 inches also, now i subtract 4.5 inches from 100 = 95.5.. wouldnt that make the studs too short? . If the stud is to fit between top and bottm plate, shouldnt i be subtracting 1.5(top) +1.5(bottom plate) =3inch for a stud tight fit? .... i dont know if anyobdy follows what im trying to say. thinking i missed something,but keep replaying and still dont see it

I feel well educated and ready for this step except for the following questions. @13:40, you showed us the 3" deck screws and how it goes through the 2x4 into the stud. Are you using the same size screw to attach the double top plate? If you secure the double top plate with 2 screws at the stud, will it hit the 1st fasteners?

    • @brucebranch1683

      You don't need to be directly on the stud when attaching the double top plate as the studs are already connected to the top plate. Just roughly adjacent to each stud is fine

    • @DESIGNPEPO
      @DESIGNPEPO 5 років тому +2

      I think the idea to screw above the stud is because if you put them in between the studs, then the electrician when make a hole through the two top plates may hit the nails with the drill bit.

    When you are doing the wall lay out, just a tip. You can always nail those 2 2x4’s together flush. Then go 15 1/4 and put a duplex or regular sinker, then attach the tape to that nail. Then go every 16 inches from there.

    Hi Shannon, thanks so much for this very informative video. Really enjoy all your content. When you are mounting the double top plate, you say to put two extra nails where the studs are. But if you do that, aren't you risking hitting the nails that are already there connecting the first top plate to the studs?

    If I understand correctly, when framing an 8 foot wall, the 2 top plates, the bottom plate and all standing studs should measure 8’ tall. Please correct if wrong, never done carpentry. Thanks

      depends what you are doing but for an interior wall that is not having to fit between an existing floor and ceiling I like to have 8'-1" this allows for standard sheets of drywall and a little wiggle room. Ceiling gets drywalled first with 1/2" or 5/8" drywall, then two rows of 48" drywall on the walls and that leaves you a little bit extra at the floor which is covered by flooring and trim.

    How do you avoid obstacles such as pipes running on a concrete wall in a basement? Would you just avoid putting a continuous stud wall over it and just skip it, so when the drywall is applied it is covered seamlessly, even though all the drywall measurements would be off?

      ya you need to work around those types of things as good as you can.
