The Getaway really needs to make a comeback. Back when the first two games came out, we had like 10 open world crime games a year (including GTA). Now we don't get any. Perfect time for Sony to put one out.
Yeah, it's crazy how we got so many crime games in the 00s to nothing other than GTA V...for almost ten years...it's been too long. Theer's so much room in the market for a few more of these.

@@VandergriftMoefies definitely does! London is known for being grey. If you listen to the ambient sounds in the game they are very good too and add to the atmosphere. It's that mash up of tyres on the road, people talking, air and aeroplanes. Like they recorded real street ambience for the game.
You should try the new watch dogs.. its set in london and is pretty good! (I highly recommend playing the other two watch dogs prior to get a feel for the story / lore) and sadly they are set in USA. but the newest watch dogs is in London.
Too many licences were involved from car manufacturers to real advertising billboards and real shops etc. Probably wouldn't even pass advertising standards. Also not many companies want to have videos of death and mayhem in front of their businesses. Were not far removed from public terror attacks across London and Europe. I do miss these games but can understand why they have not been put on PSN.
Yeah, I heard about the third sequel to the game around that, could of had Getaway 3, 4 and maybe 5 on the Ps3, then have 5 be also on the Ps4 as well as 6, 7 and 8 until the Ps5 comes out, but we have VR games that are more spiritual successors to them tbh
I'd love another getaway game. I'm so sick of literally everything being centered around the US and Americans, being able to drive around london was a huge breath of fresh air
as an american i agree, also this game was brutal and the villains felt like true dirtbags that could exist in real life. Gta's satirical styles can often make it feel campy.
Watch Dogs Legion was dogshit Lol. forget the game itself, the fact that it doesn't even capture the essence of the place it's being set in. Ubisoff has turned into such a soulless cash grab corporate, they are selling the same product with different gimmicks each year
Loved this game as a kid. Played the boxing club level on a demo disc over and over again until I finally had the game in my hands. This game combined with the shooting mechanics from Max payne 3 as a remake would be so much fun to me. I used to play the free roam as mitch and find all of the "hidden cars". Good memories even though it had it's problems
That intro with Amon Tobin's theme, yeah yeah yeah. In fact the whole OST was damn good, big dada/ninja tune artists all over the place. Gotta love UK gamedev just for that.
This series was revolutionary and while it’s hard to tell now, these graphics and the level design were a BIG deal back when the game released. I’ll never forget a detail that while not a big deal now, was an interesting quirk at the time….leaning against walls and resting to regain health, this was not a common thing at the time of the game’s release, in fact I think this was one of the first times I saw this concept.
The game has dynamic shadows, noticeable in smaller darker environments. That's really unheard of for the PS2 era games especially given that it's an open world GTA style game
Absolute classic of a game. Playing an English gangland game was a good time, and 12 year old me adored it. Solid story, good gameplay, and I particularly loved the "realistic" elements, like the lack of HUD, the "in game map" being car indicators, player health being shown via the amount of blood and wheezing the player character displays, being able to regain some health by resting against a wall and catching your breath, the weapons available to you being shown on the player and not in a bag of plenty... some truly innovative stuff in these games.
Compared to the predecessor I remember that I loved the secrets in this game like the hidden racecars, the keys you could find in each mission, the races, the garages where you could save cars and the different endings. Overall I liked the vehicles more and the bikes were awesome too. But the Sam missions really were a pain in the ass and Mitchell was a weird character.
This still stands as one of my favorite games of all time. I played this before I got my hands on GTA3, and I think its tone kind of warped my expectations of Grand Theft Auto. Getaway: Black Monday was the first "cinematic story heavy" game I played and it really stuck with me. I've always hoped for a follow-up, or even a remaster, but upon learning more about how...challenged...the studio's history is, I guess that will remain a dream. Thanks for this review. Great to look back on.
*Thank you!* I grew up with this game, replayed it many times and finished it again last year. I've uploaded many bass covers of it's original OST on my channel as a tribute to the game, the studio and everyone involved in this release. Such an underrated game! Been waiting for the elusive Getaway 3 for more than 15 years now!
I remember playing this game for the very first time and lost track of where I was supposed to go until I realized i had to use the blinkers that indicates which direction I'm supposed to be headed good times,,
As a result of you having played the game years after release, the criticisms don't weigh up. If you had played this or the original in the early 00s, like all gamers at the time, you would have looked through the game manual, which provides you with control layout and if I remember correctly, a physical map. So it really was not that difficult. I personally really enjoyed the more immersive lack of detail, health determined by amount of blood and damage, directions through indicators etc.
Back when we got a handbook with the disc. It had the details of the game, the controls and other things that explained something in the games. Nowadays you just get a disc!
I miss the instructions book cos I used to get home with a new game, open it, then take the instructions book to the toilet to read thru while I had a dump. It was like a ritual for me when buying a game. Nowadays I kist buy digital and realised whatever it said in the books I didn't need to be told and could just figure stuff out.
8:56 "I wish they'd picked a better time of year to set the story, as the skies are always grey and cloudy" - No, that's just what London looks like year-round. :)
It would be really fun if we ever get a reboot of this series. Or rather more games set in London over all, something like that old GTA set in the 60s but in third person

Fantastic review as always Colourshed, I remember the stealth missions with Sam I literally gave up on because I thought they were terrible when I was about 10/11. London Studio definitely should get the opportunity to work on a new Getaway title because they’ve got the experience as a triple A dev and tech to really fix the combat, driving and camera systems. This video has also reminded me I should give Blood and Truth a go as well!
I played this again today, and actually found the street I stayed on, when i visited london. Near russell square and the building on the corner is iconic, ITS IN THE GAME. Unfortunately the rest of the street is very different, i chalk it down to being 13 years before I visited, and lack of tech. Despite that its still impressive, I just wish they would make a getaway 3 with an even MORE realistic london with real brands and stores!
I remember climbing around on the lamp thing like in 16:36 and waiting for them to come around so you could knock them out by jumping on them and after a long ass time I made it somehow. :D
The first open world game I've ever played ! I have a lot of fond memories of playing it as a kid. I mainly played free roam as Mitch, exploring the map and driving around. I think I still have the CD somewhere and I still have my PS2 so I can still play it in its original form if I want to
Nothing like starting 2022 then a review from ColourShed Productions and also, may you please review Grand Theft Auto London, Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars and the LEGO video games!
Unfortunately it's not on PC 😭 Imagine if The Getaway 3 didn't get cancelled, hopefully the Series gets revived The Getaway 3 would have competed with GTA 4 There's two things what are underrated in Games, Police games and Open World Games set in London There's not been a Good Police game since Swat 4 and Black Monday Btw there's a Game called Ready or Not on Steam which is like a Swat 5 but it's still early access, it's good but needs polishing
I grew up gaming in the 2000s. It was a golden age for games, all the cool ideas, the storytelling, the adventures. I'm a writer now and it's been such an important influence for me.
I don't blame you for hating this as most fans of the original did as well. The first game had a great atmosphere and sadistic humour, while this just feels broken. From the controls to the cameras. Yet another franchise broken due to sequels.
I loved this game, it neatened up a few things from the previous game and the interiors were great. I would love to see this game remastered but I bet it would be a licensing nightmare. Many of the car manufacturers screwed the developers around, such as BMW, Mercedes, and Volkswagen. Nissan and Saab also have hidden cars in this game which have only been discovered in game as of 2020-2021, as they were last minute cuts.
Give or take it's been 16 years im still hoping I see the 3rd game. I casually check every few months but it never happens this franchise is dead and has been all this time. It's the hope that kills you, for me these 2 games where everything I wanted and I knew next gen console's would take it to next level. In 34 soon i have a family yet here i am clinging on to something that doesn't exist 😕
I played the getaway black monday as a kid and recently to check how good it is and i have to say, the game has improved in many places. For one, it's much easier, the difficulty wasn't all over the place(one of the aspects i didn't like about the original getaway), cars don't break as easily and i did like several cool things you could do like for example, you can store cars in freeroam and save them which was neat. It felt like the getaway but with a few changes and i do agree with the point how it feels more like an expansion. Personally, the getaway series was very fun and enjoyable but it had some serious faults that held it back and made it not as popular and it's a shame cause honestly, these games have a lot of good aspects to them and i'd love to see a remake or reboot with the flaws ironed out.
Well aside from story and side content, 1st The Getaway was better game, at least for me. When you get to know the quirks of OG driving physics, cars feel a lot better than in Monday. And the addition of camera controls makes the game somehow more janky than it was.
Im glad to see this video. Even tho this game came out a long ass time ago but it help shape the games for the future. I hope u guys make more videos like this... It seems like time almost forgot about the classics like The Getaway
Its hard to see now but back then this game was so far ahead of the competition, and while I recently replayed it and see the controls/movement felt awful, back then I never noticed it. The combination of licensed cars, a real non American city, and a serious/dark story line, made it one of my favourite titles ever made, I would buy a PS5 for this game alone if they were to make a new game with the same basic ingredients.
Yeah the Boxing gym is a real boxing gym. I used to box there. In the game it's called the Shoreditch Boxing Gym. In real life it's called the All Stars Boxing Gym. There is a board on the wall inside the game that says "Welcome to All Stars Boxing Club" and the interior is accurate and looks just like it did in real life. The location of it isn't accurate though as its in Harrow London and not Shoreditch. The porn place will more than likely be real too. Not been to that one but been to some in Soho London. Great game and still waiting patiently for the Getaway 3. R.I.P to Eddie O Connor real name Dave Legeno. Was a lovely bloke was Dave.
I only played Black Monday but I remember being annoyed when playing as Sam. A criminal hacker who refuses to use weapons is IMO not a good character for a game like this. I think it would have been better if she was allowed to fight but could only use handguns.
Speaking of weird glitches, in the first game on the mission inside the police station I died maybe halfway through, on restarting I instantly heard gunfire and thought this was odd. I followed the dead bodies and saw an NPC taking down the enemies. This wasn't just any NPC, it was Marks character model. This was a glitch I was never able to replicate or have seen anyone talking about it since. Truly bizarre.
I remember beating this game back in the day. Don't remember nothing about it. But it was one of the best games I played. And I didn't finish the first game. Didn't like it. Black Monday deserved more love. True Crime sucked yet got 2 sequels
Hahaha I know exactly what you're talking about with the big heads! That was one of the first things I thought of when I played this game the first time
I remember this game. My Getaway 1 disc was stuck on a endless black screen which lead to me getting this one. Looking back at it, im actually surprised my younger self completed this game (Especially the missions being Sam) with no hud or help text. Rip Mitch though I remember some fight showdown happening and he died in my run.
Oh man I loved this game back in the day! It's a bit awkward and perhaps too arcadey in the driving model department plus the lack of an interface (so your only indicator of low HP is the amount of blood on your character) as well as framerate issues, but man I'm really sad we never got a getaway 3, despite many many years of rumors for PS3. Then PS4 came and went - nothing. Now we're at ps5 and still total silence. Not even a remake or a remaster
England is dark and grey like this all the time. It’s why we should take vitamins because we literally get no sun other than 2weeks at summer. The entire rest of the year looks like this lol
For your next video, it may be worth highlighting what happened to Getaway 3, which was due for the PS3, there was even a teaser trailer and then it got scrapped. That'd be a cool investigation.
There's a movie game I desperately want you to cover from the PS2 era called rise to honor, when I was a child I remember the demo disc that had some transformers game, rise to honor and another game I can't remember. A couple years later I remember renting and finishing the whole game and being so happy i played the demo beforehand.

The getaway and it's sequel were great games. I wish we could get a remaster or remake.
I remember playing this game and driving on the wrong side of the road lmao
I'd recommend the VR game Blood & Truth.it's excellent and it's made by the same people that made the Getaway
Unfortunately it's not on PC 😭
Imagine if The Getaway 3 didn't get cancelled, hopefully the Series gets revived The Getaway 3 would have competed with GTA 4
There's two things what are underrated in Games, Police games and Open World Games set in London
There's not been a Good Police game since Swat 4 and Black Monday
Btw there's a Game called Ready or Not on Steam which is like a Swat 5 but it's still early access, it's good but needs polishing
the cars , the yardie house crack music xD. setting fire to a restaurant :D 16 year old me was feeling like a gangster playing this:)
Vaguely remember playing this game when i was a fetus lmao
Lmao
I grew up gaming in the 2000s. It was a golden age for games, all the cool ideas, the storytelling, the adventures.
I'm a writer now and it's been such an important influence for me.
Me on the 6th January 2022: Remembering that game and beginn a playthrough.
ColourShedProductions few days later: Okay. Here is a review.
I love the quality of your reviews. Very entertaining. I hope one day you’ll review Overboard! (aka Shipwreckers!).
I love the sleeker look of your PS2 between new and never gets old from usage
So, so glad people are still talking about this game
Man I loved this game its cool to see it mentioned again
This game gives me a shit ton of nostalgia. Between this and GTA:SA at the time, I was set with open world games. THANK YOU for covering this :)
I remember buying this, completing it in about a day, then returning it the next. The days when you could do that. 😁
I fucking hated Sam's levels, it was so bloody hard finding which way you had to go, it was really easy to get lost
A game way ahead of its time. No doubt about that.
Not played this sequel, but I loved the original game. Bloody hard, but worth it. A GTA-style game with that map would be fantastic.
Well aside from story and side content, 1st The Getaway was better game, at least for me. When you get to know the quirks of OG driving physics, cars feel a lot better than in Monday. And the addition of camera controls makes the game somehow more janky than it was.
Getaway is Sony first cinematic game. Without him we wouldn't have Ghost of Tsushima
I never even really noticed the head size thing, and now I can't unsee it... It's like an orange on a toothpick! Lol
I remember playing this as a kid at a friend's house and not really clicking with the game. Glad it wasn't due to bad taste.
Loved just driving around in the skyline or the golf cart in the first game never got the chance to play BM though
Happy new year man!!! And for everyone my fellow men and women of culture aswell
Man I wish the getaway did come with a next one I loved that game so much
I remember beating this game back in the day. Don't remember nothing about it. But it was one of the best games I played. And I didn't finish the first game. Didn't like it. Black Monday deserved more love. True Crime sucked yet got 2 sequels
The London streets and general UK roads aesthetic in this game is absolutely spot on it's almost bewildering
Hahaha I know exactly what you're talking about with the big heads! That was one of the first things I thought of when I played this game the first time
Even I questioned why their heads were too big at the beginning of your video🤣
Fantastic review as always!
Maaan I was waiting for you to say something about his head. I loved the first getaway and never got a chance to play black Monday
One of the best games from back in its days 🙌
I wonder why the heads are so big?! I'm so glad you mentioned it as I honestly found it so distracting. Definitely DK mode ON!
How did they get all the licensing for all the cars?
I never noticed the heads being too big and now I can’t unsee them.
It took me an eternity to figure out your blinker was your navigation and to restore health you had to lean on the wall
I wish they would do a remake of both with modern controls maybe packaged as one game but I don't ever see us getting another getaway game again.
was a really neat game for its time . Worth playing. It really made you feel like you were in london
Watch Dogs Legion did a great visual recreation of London. Can you imagine a new Getaway game using Ubisoft’s map that would be incredible
There's a movie game I desperately want you to cover from the PS2 era called rise to honor, when I was a child I remember the demo disc that had some transformers game, rise to honor and another game I can't remember. A couple years later I remember renting and finishing the whole game and being so happy i played the demo beforehand.
