My dad played Harry in this game. Turned the game on last night to show my daughter. Being a retro game enthusiast it’s fair to say she is proud of her Grandad being on the PS2 😂
What do you mean? It was as good as you remember it because that’s when you played it. If you’re going to judge it by todays standards then it’s silly.
The game still doesn’t even look that bad. i Remember the graphics being sick when I played as a kid and you can tell why. Pretty solid for a early 2000 Ps2 game
I think the main thing that only really us Brits who live here love the most about this game is the realism. Everything is straight out of real life! All the cars were real models you'd see on English roads, all the shops and buildings were recognisable like William Hill and HSBC etc all the road signs, the adverts on the sides of the buses, the street layout of London! Even the phone boxes with the BT logos... Unfortunately this was the last time we got such immersion in a game set in England. We've had watch dogs and assassin's Creed that has the city landmarks but lacks all the real life little details this game used!
I had a mate that lived in the UK around this time then came back to Australia saw me playing this game and said the same thing! He even showed the offie where he got his booze...
A tier comment, thank you. Exactly what I've tried to explain to foreign commentators, mainly Americans. Kingston, Lewisham,Croydon etc, never see them in anything.
The representation of London is incredible, especially considering the hardware it was running on. I started working in London the year this game came out, twenty years later I’m infinitely more familiar with the city than I was back then but the real joy of this game is it’s now a snapshot of old London. It’s pre Elizabeth line, pre the Manhattan on Thames era of the Square Mile and just looking at the old cars and old brands tickles the nostalgia real hard. It’s a remarkable achievement.
My best memory of this game was my Dad's reaction. He knew London like the back of his hand. When he played the game he would get angry, and be saying, "That's not supposed to be a one- way street." "Your uncle spent time in that police station." "Sunrise are rubbish!" Context on that last one, my dad worked for a company whose rival was Sunrise... Sunrise vans are in the game.
no. no. nooooo. no. no. no. no. no. this game would never work as the remaster. It's too simple in the structure. It haves too many licenced stuff. The gameplay is wooden. I remember being so hyped for The Getaway back in the day because of the open-world phenomenon that GTA 3 started. I got the game and I never finished it and still haven’t finished it 20+ years later. It’s not that I didn’t like the game, I just never saw it through to the end for whatever ridiculous reason. One of my early gaming regrets that I need to mend. Man I’m glad I found this channel. It’s hitting the nostalgia sweet spot for me at the perfect time.
I've half completed many games and I regret it because now that I've experienced next gen sequels or just better games and graphics in general, it's very hard to go back and enjoy them. I played the original driver on a ps1 a few years back, couldn't believe how bad it looked and so rather than ruin my memories of it, turned it off after a few minutes lol

This and Black Moday are underrated gems they were ahead of their time back in the early 2000's so for anyone who hasn't played The Getaway and the second game The Getaway Black Monday i'd highly recommend giving them a try. They might be 20 year old video games but they're worth playing and they're worth the experience i've had endless amounts of fun playing both of those games over the years.
I love this game! Don't know how many times I completed it, but after watching your video, I remembered every single detail! Thank you for this trip down memory lane!
This game was far too hard when I was 9-10 years old. I remeber it so well as if it was yesterday. Black Monday was alot easier but still a hard game. I cant beleive how good this game still looks and its crazy that in this world full of reboots, remakes and remasters that the getaway has never had that treatment.
One of the best games I've ever played. The story and soundtrack were top notch. The realistic gameplay mechanics set this game apart from other games at the time. The car handling was real dodgy though with stiff unprecise steering and the unpredictable slide at times. I remember driving being vastly improved in the sequel.
As a British person, the first part really made me laugh in a good way. Always love hearing how Americans perceive us through TV/Films/News and unfortunately our terrible government and the 50/50 liked/disliked Royal Family. Love that you’re a big fan of The Inbetweeners. It’s one of the must loved shows here. Recommendation that you watch the TV show Skins (the original UK version) Season 1-2 and 3-4 are the best seasons. It’s not a full on comedy series like The Inbetweeners but more of a comedy drama series following a group of teenagers/friends after leaving school and attending college/sixth form. I’m also the mod on r/TheGetaway and I’ve shared the video there if that’s ok with you. Always great to see someone look at The Getaway after all these years have passed + really love your content/videos!
I remember that, there was a influx of news copies arrived at the Dixons store I worked at at the time and we had to box up a the old copies and send them back not reason given initially but we later found out why, I've still got an original copy with the BT logos on the vans.
A bit of a shame. Was released as a Sony Playstation only/exclusive at a time when GTA was peaking. If this got released today i think it would be GTA V level of interest/popularity. I dont think it would get made today, too many copyright claims and violence. We wouldnt be allowed to show all those real life cars/advertising/shops etc.
So glad this popped up in my feed Im 56 and loved this game when it first came out,i even remember the little fold out map of London that was inside with the disc, still got it😂
Used to stay up for days playing this with my brother. We literally would just go around finding awesome cars like the skyline and the go kart. Great game.
As a kid I could never beat the first levels. So I just drove around and did GTA style stuff. The second Getaway game was a massive improvement over the first. Hopefully you get around to doing a review on that one!

I didn't know you could heal until like 2 years after playing this and beating it several times. They did not make it obvious at all. Would have saved a lot of headaches had I known from the beginning lol. LOVE this game.
I waited for so long to get this game after seeing commercials on TV, and when it finally came out we were in the midst of a huge blizzard and I was devastated that I couldn't get to Best Buy to get a copy. A few days later though I finally got my hands on it and it was a truly life changing, ultra immersive, cinematic experience like no other! Even now you don't see games like this anymore.
The intro is straight up from lock stock and two smoking barrels. Highly recommend that movie it’s nothing like the getaway. Getaway have always felt intriguing, it’s like if Gta went British just not triple A. (I know rockstar is from Scotland). Guessing the close we get to that is Gta 4. Even tho they took influences from gritty US crime films. Great review man
The kind of realism in this game is something you'd NEVER see today. There's no way so many companies today would allow their brands to be shown in a game all about gangs, drugs, cop killing and crime... It's a shame because I've been waiting for a Getaway 3 every since I was a kid..
I still remember how good it felt to flawlessly drive from Charlie's house to the ship of Mark's last level in the TVR sports car without getting a scratch. I swear, I have it recorded on a VHS somewhere at my dad's house haha 20 minutes of hardcore focused high-speed driving
I played this game as a 10 year old and absolutely loved it. I visited London the following summer and was freaking out at the bridge and castle that were in the game. At the time I couldn't imagine how games could look any better and I was convinced they'd make a sequel where I'd be able to drive past my house (couple of hours drive from London). Loving those crates of Stella and fosters during the stealth part.
My brain had tidied up all my memory of playing this in its entirety. The "time out" music chime and stages, especially the yardie one was like I had played this last week. Wow
What a game....wish they'd remake 🙏 And looking back on it I didn't realise how tricky the controls were. One of my favourite parts of the game was the different musical sounds it made when one of the gangs were about to attack you....brilliant.
I’ve been watching your videos for the past 2 weeks, jumping around to games that I like to hear your thoughts on them but for some reason this video has been at the top of my recommendations for the past week. I’m here to watch now, let’s see why UA-cam wanted me to watch this specific video of yours
Great memories of this game. Remember being blown away by the fact you could drive around real London, in real cars, see real landmarks and spot real brands. Wasn’t overly in love with the gameplay (vs GTA) but loved the detail.
Imagine if we lived in a timeline where Rockstar created the artistic masterpiece that is RDR2, weren't corrupted by sheer greed via GTA V shark cards.. And put the same love and passion into a duel character The Getaway 3 game
I loved how The Getaway looked when sitting next to my older brother playing it, but our copy would have 30 minute long loading times, so I never got to actually play it myself...
I remember hanging out in my Friends basement in the Projects playing this game and everybody coming over getting lit just to watch me play. One of the best games I ever played.
I love your videos mate! As an insomniac they have been perfect for helping the long nights. Not to say they put me to sleep; far from it! They are just the perfect combination of soothing and informative. As for The Getaway, I remember my 7-8 year old mind being blown away by seeing a game based in the UK, not to mention the real car brands. Unfortunately I was too young to deal with the difficulty curve, having played GTA 3 first, it sadly didn’t offer enough for me beyond the first 2 missions. Glad to have finally seen how it plays out! Keep up the videos man!
Despite its obvious flaws i like the how intuitive the game was as well as how graphically impressive it was for its time. The lack of HUD down to the streets and such was a pretty smart move albeit it has flaws but with a bit of polishing the game could've been something much bigger.
I fought my way though most of the game until you have to fight your way out of the police station which just seemed impossible to do. Then I figured out leaning against the wall to regenerate health. That was the game changer for me 😅
I know the layout of central London fairly well IRL so playing this game way back when was surreal. I knew most of the backroads through muscle memory.
Still in my top 10 and I was 14 when this came out I thought it was next level and I still appreciate it. I remember my dad coming into my room and asking what movie I was watching because he heard all the sirens during the 35 minute driving sequences.. good times.
Second year of highschool, and I had so much fun hanging out with my mates playing this game. My dad yelled at me to do better in French class, so I switched to French language track and kept playing with subtitles. I remember the French dub being decently well done.
this was my first game for the ps2 in january 2003... i couldnt wait to get home to hook up the console and boot up the game, both for the first time. i wish i could relive those days as a 12 year old
Back when this game was new, i got all the way to the last Mark Hammond mission (the one on the ship) without knowing you could auto-aim or recover health by leaning on walls, god knows how i got that far without those perks, i must have died thousands of times. Once i found out, i eventually beat the game. Such a great game, memorable characters (especially Jolson) and really tough missions, better story than Black Monday in my opinion
I can definitely say that for black Monday, they definitely improve on the gameplay front, at least where the driving is concerned. Vehicles don't skid as much on hard turns and the signals will turn on at junctions to show you what roads to take as opposed to just pointing a vague direction. Not to mention having the map available from the pause menu. Shooting and stealth stays mostly the same however.
I remember getting stuck during the stealth mission as the girl, sneaking around the police station. I’d like to go back, as I’m smarter at games now lol.
Man this game was hard as shit as a kid, i just drove around until i died or failed, loved how it had actual cars of the day. Wish i went back to actually play it
Yep, you can see the tribulation of games with "open world" elements in their infancy: a large world, and nothing to do in it. The original Mafia has the same problem, only partly mitigated by an occasional single side mission in between two story-based ones, and a free roam mode with some wacky objectives. Happy to know you enjoyed the game nonetheless; if anything, it may be the gateway drug to Guy Ritchie's movies, which I strongly recommend (The Snatch and Lock, Stock before all others): don't miss them!
The open world was just a bit of an extra "bonus" in this game. It's a cinematic/narrative driven game that's linear, but also happens to have an open world. The whole story takes place in like 12 hours? That's why there's no weather or day/night cycle either. There wasn't anything to do in the open world because that wasn't the focus.
Absolutely used to cain this bugger back in the day. Loved the free roam mode and finding all the hidden vehicles and causing carnage. Black Monday is also well worth a video. Very fun game too
This game had the best cars and setting in any video game ever. If you're from uk and Ireland its an absolute dream just freeroaming familiar streets and driving familiar cars. I know its prob shi now for younger people but back when it was out it was amazing. Same with the 2nd one and the first 2 driver games
This and Black Monday was a fantastic game. Imo very ahead of its time. There was supposed to be a 3rd installment for the PS3, but was canceled. As far as Black Monday, it has a completely new story. It’s not a continuation of the first one. Absolute shocker to me. Pay close attention to the story. The attention to detail is phenomenal. Liam ended up being killed in a shootout massacre. That was probably one of very few connections to the original storyline. Looking forward to seeing that video!

I’m not usually a fan of remake / reboots in general but this game should be remade.
Imagine if we lived in a timeline where Rockstar created the artistic masterpiece that is RDR2, weren't corrupted by sheer greed via GTA V shark cards.. And put the same love and passion into a duel character The Getaway 3 game
I remember these graphics were the BEST back when I was growing up. I played the demo over and over again.
Wow, I was not expecting to see this in my recommendations. My favourite newly discovered channel of the year so far! Thanks, Subscribed!
This game is so unique, there are no games like it really. The combat gameplay is intense action and super classy in its own respect.
I loved how The Getaway looked when sitting next to my older brother playing it, but our copy would have 30 minute long loading times, so I never got to actually play it myself...
Still miss this game. My parents wouldn’t let me play GTA so I got this. Just as good!
To this day I will never see the Lexus SC the same again 🤣
Remember that game Gangs of London on PSP. I put so many hours into that game as a kid.
Funnily enough, this video popped up on my recommended just as I was downloading an ISO for the game. Talk about convenient timing.
If there's one game that needs a reboot... its this masterpiece
Been waiting for this video😂😂 that’s my Sunday sorted
Despite its obvious flaws i like the how intuitive the game was as well as how graphically impressive it was for its time. The lack of HUD down to the streets and such was a pretty smart move albeit it has flaws but with a bit of polishing the game could've been something much bigger.
This game is soooooooo good back in the day. The story and the gameplay was just superb.
I fought my way though most of the game until you have to fight your way out of the police station which just seemed impossible to do. Then I figured out leaning against the wall to regenerate health. That was the game changer for me 😅
They don't make games like they used to! This felt like you were playing through a mob film, excellent!
I know the layout of central London fairly well IRL so playing this game way back when was surreal. I knew most of the backroads through muscle memory.
After playing this game, I never want to drive in London... Not because you drive on the wrong side of the road... It's just all so "dense".....
I remember the French dub being decently well done.
remember being up all night playing this as a kid one of my fav games of all time
this was my first game for the ps2 in january 2003... i couldnt wait to get home to hook up the console and boot up the game, both for the first time. i wish i could relive those days as a 12 year old
We NEED a Getaway and TRue Crime Streets of LA and New York City REBOOT
I must have been a patient kid,I remember the confusion I was going through but actually enjoying every minute of it 😊
Mate I am so glad someone’s done a video on this it’s one of my best games from when I was a kid but it was really hard like what a game bro
Its literally impossible to include real cars in a game like this today considering how butthurt manufacturers can get
Has it been 20 years already since I played this game. Damn I'm old. I had fun playing this game as a kid.
I replayed it on my ps2 this year, it’s still just as difficult as when I was a kid
You weren't spoon fed instructions like most games these day. What an iconic classic!
I kept checking since last night lmao 🤣 I'm starting the video now! Thank you for great content!
What a game , smashed it as a youth , tried playing it few weeks ago couldn't even drive to the first mission lol
It’s still a bit of a pain in the ass from what I remember, but good luck
Man this game was hard as shit as a kid, i just drove around until i died or failed, loved how it had actual cars of the day. Wish i went back to actually play it
Mark hammond ?? Raaaattttttiiiiiiiddddd loved this game so much
Yep, you can see the tribulation of games with "open world" elements in their infancy: a large world, and nothing to do in it.
GTA 1 and 2 had plenty of stuff to do on the side. This is just cost-cutting or ImMeRsIoN.
Rock n Rolla is a good one also
The open world was just a bit of an extra "bonus" in this game. It's a cinematic/narrative driven game that's linear, but also happens to have an open world.
The whole story takes place in like 12 hours? That's why there's no weather or day/night cycle either. There wasn't anything to do in the open world because that wasn't the focus.
love your video man! keep up the awesome work!!!!!
Absolutely used to cain this bugger back in the day. Loved the free roam mode and finding all the hidden vehicles and causing carnage. Black Monday is also well worth a video. Very fun game too
It's a bit like an English Mafia game.
Mafia got a remake, so a remake like that for The Getaway might be worth it.
Ahhhh the nostalgia ❤
Have you ever considered doing speedrun recaps on video games? This would be a great one to start with!
Deserves a remake. Loved The Getaway the sequel was good too.
My cousin and i still randomly shout at eachother "stop! I need your details" 😂😂
What a game, a true classic
This is hands down of the best games ever made on PS2 and an absolute missed opportunity for another household franchise.
I like this game so much, bring me a lot of memories :)
Loved this game. 12 years old when this came out. The yardies in south London were always my favourite battles
Gave me a chuckle how you drove on the right side of the road at the start.
An incredible game, both this and it's follow up.
Cool video. Loved this game as a kid, used to quote it with my friends I grew up with, and had a laugh doing it. Good memories 😀
The smell of weed and Paca Rabanne ultraviolet, and this game take me straight back to the early naughties
I remember playing that back in 2004. I loved it, but it was a challenge. I had to look up a walk through to help with a lot of it
U do great videos and the getaway was sick I remember when it was new. And that's cool u know of the inbetweeners
Honey wake up! Fuzzy Slippers posted!
