Have you ever tried to measure the oil level on your BMW and had it time out or fail? Well, it happened in my BMW Z4 with the N20 engine and I wasn't going to risk engine running low on oil. Since BMWs no longer have regular dip sticks, the oil level sensor is the only way to know how much oil is in the engine. When the oil level sensor measurement fails or the sensor isn't working correctly, it means when the car runs low, it will not inform you like it normally would to add a quart of oil. This job is pretty easy to do as the sensor is at the bottom of the car and can be easily reached after taking off the protection shield on the bottom with just a few bolts.

Removing the $2 oil stick in favor of a $100 sensor is where BMW jumped the shark.

Not my favorite.. it also takes a while to get the results and when you think your engine might be low or out of oil, it's not fun.

Would be a lot easier if it was a regular dip stick, but at least this way the car can report to you once you are low on oil.

What happened to the original engine? Low oil cause the timing chain to break or the intake camshaft to dry out and seize? I have a 2015 x3 with the N20 engine and it snapped the timing chain because the intake cam bearings were not being lubricated for some reason. The bearings basically melted to the cam and put so much drag on the timing chain it snapped. Curious what happend to yours?

    • @Soggersnuggets

How did u solve it? It’s probably a faulty sensor. I got a Z4 recently with 80k miles and the oil sensor was kinda broken. It was giving me a wrong reading. A new one costs about $30. These sensors seem to be a common problem among Z4s and BMW should rly fix it for the newer cars

@@SimpleCarGuy Oh i can imagine! I found two pin hole cracks about 5mm away from the sensor area! i had to bring everything surrounding the sensor's hole & 3 mounting threads back to bare metal, add permetex cold weld to the area & sand it down again, let it dry over 24hrs, test fit, heat cycle engine & observe another 24 hrs for a leak ( cause i detest re-jacking the car up again. Also all the oil pan bolts under the oil line were loose, i carefully snugged them all and now we are officially leak-free...for now ;) cheers!
