I love a good terestrial. You can never tie enough. The fly tyer in me wants wants to tie up 500 different patterns (a bit of an exaggeration, but you get the point) but the angler in me uses about 1. Beetles on the other hand, the fish just can't seem to get enough of them. Whatever variant i throw at them, they gobble up.
Cool to hear Craig! I don't think I've used a beetle all season though. Ants and hoppers have been working well enough here but maybe I'll break one out this weekend. :-)

Thanks Wes! I just checked your channel again and I was subscribed but didn't have notifications on so I've missed your last couple. I just changed that. You've got some quality ties! Good audio, camera work and lighting. One tip- make the flies in your thumbnails much bigger! Zoom in so the fly is at least half the thumbnail. Just my two cents but I think it'll help your CTR. Let me know if you ever have any UA-cam or behind the scenes questions. I'm happy to share what I've learned over the last couple of years.

I've taught myself this year to fly fish through watching UA-cam vids. I'm doing great was so frustrating at first. I've decided to try fly tying to. I just got my first vice and some materials today in the mail. Going to give it a shot this weekend. Wow, this is great to hear Chris! There's nothing like finally starting to tie. One tip... don't let it get overwhelming. There is a LOT out there... and I mean tools, materials, fly patterns, books, and generally a lot to learn. My advice is to just have fun. Don't worry if your first flies aren't pretty. I'm sure the first flies you tie this weekend will catch fish. :-)
500 videos! That’s amazing! I don’t know if I have 500 patterns in my boxes. I doubt it. These videos are very helpful regardless of the viewers skill level, very welcoming and accessible.

Hoppers are my absolute favorites..I’ll tie some of these up soon! Finally getting lots of rain and rivers are flowing with a few flooding. What a change. What I really like is seeing how your channel has really evolved into something completely different than everyone elses. Then we started to see the man and personality behind the vise...The back stories, personal stories, history, mistakes on the vise that we all encounter that you don't edit out. I'm not the least but surprised that you have gotten to 500 ! What I love about your channe:l 1) Videos the right length. I love Kelly Gallop, but I almost always fall asleep in the middle.of his tying vids (I am 60 so I do nod off on occasion) 2) Tone and personality are engaging, 3) good variety and some fun deviations (holiday flies). ...Keep up the good work.
Thank you for these kind words! And I sincerely appreciate the feedback. I'm not sure how many people have noticed but my videos have been trending toward 7-9 minutes over the last several months. I've slowly learned that that's the sweet spot with everybody's attention span these days. I like Kelly's videos too but I agree with you, it takes him forever and I find myself fast forwarding through a lot of it. And in any of my videos that get to be 12 minutes or longer, the watch time goes way down.
Really like that pattern, Matt. Your choice of dub is spot on! What I call a "dirty look" is far more natural than the bright yellow I see some choose. Not surprised about the 500 videos. I'm more surprised that it's been less than three years that you've grown this channel. Keep up the good work my friend!

I don't have the emergers one but do have their Benchside Reference. I may have to pick up the emergers one, but wow, I'm checking it out now and used copies of the hardback and spiral bound are quite pricey. It looks like we can pick up a paperback for about $10 though. Thanks for the note!

wow 500 videos is awesome, I have been watching for about two years and I have enjoyed your site. I have tried some of your flies, as soon as I heal up I am going to try them out on some panfish. Congratulations Matt! As we discussed in a previous posting, your videos got me back into tying to keep my mind occupied. I can say since subscribing to your channel I've watched every video since. What I really like is seeing how your channel has really evolved into something completely different than everyone elses.
Your first videos were you tying flies with the camera focused on the vise like every other channel. Then we started to see the man and personality behind the vise...The back stories, personal stories, history, mistakes on the vise that we all encounter that you don't edit out. Things we all can relate too.
I couldn't be happier for your accomplishment and we're all better for it.

I've been tying up alot of mini foam Hoppers in different colors for a friend who is going to The cornejo's River, quality Waters in Colorado near his property. I've been with you almost from the beginning and saw this channel grow . You've come along way and I'm all in. This channel has changed my life. I'm not the least but surprised that you have gotten to 500 ! What I love about your channe:l 1) Videos the right length. I love Kelly Gallop, but I almost always fall asleep in the middle.of his tying vids (I am 60 so I do nod off on occasion) 2) Tone and personality are engaging, 3) good variety and some fun deviations (holiday flies). ...Keep up the good work.
Thank you for these kind words! And I sincerely appreciate the feedback. I'm not sure how many people have noticed but my videos have been trending toward 7-9 minutes over the last several months. I've slowly learned that that's the sweet spot with everybody's attention span these days. I like Kelly's videos too but I agree with you, it takes him forever and I find myself fast forwarding through a lot of it. And in any of my videos that get to be 12 minutes or longer, the watch time goes way down.
Love this hopper a lot more realistic than the 500 foam hoppers I’ve tied. Should be a great low water pattern for fishing the Diftless this fall

Really like that pattern, Matt. Your choice of dub is spot on! What I call a "dirty look" is far more natural than the bright yellow I see some choose. Not surprised about the 500 videos. I'm more surprised that it's been less than three years that you've grown this channel. Keep up the good work my friend!

No way Jim! You can’t ditch the foam!! Sometimes we need a hopper to hold up a heavy bead head. And I’m pretty sure this thing isn’t going to float all that well. Or for very long anyway. I guess I’ll find out on the water this weekend. 😁

It’s been lots of fun trying some of the patterns and learning tying techniques from you. However….since you have done 500 videos that means Jim and I have had a minimum of 500 cups of coffee and for me it’s more like double that while watching your videos. ☕️ reload. Might as well keep up the tradition. 😁

I don't have the emergers one but do have their Benchside Reference. I may have to pick up the emergers one, but wow, I'm checking it out now and used copies of the hardback and spiral bound are quite pricey. It looks like we can pick up a paperback for about $10 though. Thanks for the note!
@@SavageFlies That’s why I went with the paperback the others were a little pricey. Spiral bound are nice for at the tying bench but not always available.
