This fly is a collaboration between John Barr and I, as he came up with the idea for a super buoyant hopper to use as the “indicator” fly in his Hopper/Copper/Dropper rig and I came up with how to tie the dang thing. We played with several different ideas and configurations based off of my Charlie Boy Hopper pattern and finally came up with the Mother of all hoppers…the BC! These photos and directions are an excerpt from John’s book, Barr Flies and I am telling you right now, if you don’t already own this book you should call the shop right now and order it. As you all know, John is perhaps the single most innovative fly tyer of our time, and his book is a treasure trove of insight into his fly pattern development process.

Outstanding looking fly, Charlie. I might buy from you one of those special machined bullet tools…😉

Charlie that's such a nice looking fly I'd hate to even tie it on and throw it in the the water

So so hilarious with your tool. Can you make them in different sizes too?

I was asked by a guy at a local fly shop named Lance Egan to ask you what your "confidence flies" are. =) Thanks in advanced!

Great looking pattern, Charlie. I've had guys adamantly tell me, "Trout don't eat wasps or hornets." Never made much sense to me.

I tie a simpler version somewhat like an old Jack Dennis tie but it probably wouldn't work as well with a dropper. I like to coat the bullet head with something like flexament to keep it from getting torn up too quickly. I can see this would float like a cork.

I am sure I can find that high-tech finely machined bullet head tool at my nearest Staples. Or I and send you 15 bucks + 5 for shipping hand handling. One of the things that really make your instructional videos so good is that you know a good joke and how to fly tyers are such gadget hogs. I learned some things with Bullet heads, I always had a bit of trouble with those. But it sure makes for a cook hopper pattern.

Nice tying! I'd like to buy a couple dozen of that special tool. Is that enough for a discount?

All those young tyers out there who are now in treatment or in asylums, it is your fault!! You probably should have told them that handling elk hair that masterfully takes YEARS, not hours, of practice and experience. Such a great pattern, and even if mine don't quite look as nice, tight, and clean, they still catch a LOT of fish! At least you told them about the secret tool, though. That helps.
