    Something to be aware of with non-denominational churches is that, while they claim to be non-denominational, they often do have ties to specific denominations. In the words of the comedian Tim Hawkins, "Non-denominational, you're not fooling anybody, you're just a Baptist church with a cool website." From my own experience, most non-denominational churches are either Baptist or Pentecostal. You usually have to look hard at their statement of faith to get an idea what they're actually a part of. My theory is that using the label of non-denominational is just a successful marketing ploy, because people are more likely to enter a church if they don't associate it with preconceived notions about the actual denomination and misinterpret the non-denominational as meaning it's a theologically neutral environment.

    • @SimplySkeptical22
      @SimplySkeptical22  2 місяці тому +10

      That's exactly it. Most "nondenominational" are actual Baptist or "Bible first" churches. Their goal is to evangelize therefore they want to remain as neutral as possible to attract as many newcomers as they can.

    • @TheLonestarofTexas
      @TheLonestarofTexas 2 місяці тому +3

      I don’t think that anyone who is truly serious could ever really consider themselves to be theologically neutral. You either got some beliefs that were thought of before by Christians of the past, or you’ve got some new novel idea, but whatever notion you subscribe to, it’s going to necessarily mean that you don’t subscribe to any other, which I don’t consider to be a bad thing by the way, as I said, that’s the only way to be a serious Cristian. What’s the point of going through all the effort if you just say everyone is right? I know there are some people who say that and still do go through the effort, but it would seem to me that there would be no need for those kinds of churches to exist if they really believed what they said. For the record, i’m Catholic.

    I’ll chime in as a Catholic convert (grew up Lutheran and toyed with Non-Denom’s before marrying a good Catholic girl and converting) I have found myself more wrapped up in the true presence of Christ in the Catholic tradition than I ever was with “Non-Denominational” or even Lutheran, even though the liturgy is nearly identical between the too (style of mass or service). So many Non-Denoms are wrapped in scandal or other sketchy immoral practices, even more so than many accuse the Catholic Church of. They invite you in with this clean veneer, but once you’re in the fold the curtain falls and you see what’s really there, and more frightening without any real ramifications having no hierarchical structure. Some groups are better than others, as I believe that Christ can belong to any church of true believers and followers, but what the one church has to offer is so much greater than yourself, which is where the church of “me” fails so tremendously.

    One must ask. Does God put on a "show" with screens, neat productions and free items or does God prefer sacred tradition? God was born into poverty, among the animals, is he looking to put on a really cool tech savvy production or will he attempt to connect to you through his own creation? @BirchWind 2 місяці тому +2

      Perhaps not, but Jesus was relevant in his interactions with those around him during his time on earth. That relevance and ability to connect with others, is what kickstarted this huge thing now known as Christianity. So - in an era of dwindling church attendance, it's the mega churches drawing people in.

      It’s notable that Jesus never set up banquets or put on plays and performances to attract people, which would be the equivalent of what modern mega churches are doing but in the first century.
      The Church is a hospital for the broken (which is all of us). That’s different than trying so desperately to catch people’s eyes using pop culture stuff.

    Ultimately my investigation of Church history and reading the ante-Nicene Fathers convinced me Protestantism is out of continuity with the Ancient Church. I was convinced I had to investigate the claims of Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox and the Coptic Church.

    Just one more thing, church, in my opinion, is about reference for Jesus, who died for the sins of the world. Choosing a church based on how cool the church looks or something else on those lines should come last (or nshould not even be taken in consideration).

      I appreciate your questions! If you check out my Intro video, I do address some of this. As a nonbeliever or a skeptic I think it is still important to expose myself to different religious ideas. If you are a believer and think that nonbelievers have no place in the church, then you are closing the door in their face for the chance for potential conversion. Many evangelicals believe that the nonbelievers are the most important people to reach.
      Also, I completely agree with you that a church should not be judged based on its aesthetics, and rather the religious sermon itself is the most important. Where I live in the Bible Belt of America, there are many “fun” and “exciting” churches that focus more on the performance rather than doctrine. You and I share that opinion, along with many others.

    Mega churches can afford to have all of these things because of the very large amounts of money they bring in. The more money they bring in, the more bells and whistles they can provide. It's like a big motivational seminar with religion as it's background music. I've seen some great small Anglican and Catholic churches fade away as the big evangelical mega-church types have moved in. The mega churches starting at a small location, but having music, handing out food at parks, putting on community events during the holidays and then they become huge and rich. Great advertising and marketing plans. I'll still always prefer an Orthodox, Catholic or even Anglican church if wanting to be in a Christian based faith group. I suggest checking out a Reform Judaism synaogue, or Orthodox. You'll see yet again a fully different way of celebrating God. (this time without Jesus as a mediary). So many different ways to God.

    To start, I have to confess that it's pretty disingenuous when a church gets rid of their denominational name to call themselves non-denominational. It goes along with what you're saying, they care more about some sort of walk/relationship with Christ than about theology. The problem with not going into theology (the study of God) is that you can't know His will, and thus, cannot walk in obedience to Him. I can understand why you call yourself a skeptic, as the vast majority of churches are bent on pleasing people to get money to keep the doors open. I love it when churches seem oblivious to gimmicks, and trends. Yes, you are correct, God is a judge! We sin every day by the things we think, say and do, and by the good we leave undone. In short, everyone has sinned (excluding Christ). We sin far more than we're aware. Everyone deserves eternal Hell because of sin. From a 'fairness' point-of-view, God should throw every last one of us into eternal Hell. Jesus the Christ came to atone for the sins of His people, (the people whom God the Father gave Him). This, of course, touches on the doctrine of "election". Oh, this is a huge subject that can't be given justice in the small space of this forum! Christ said, "If you love me, you will keep my commandments." The good works that we do, do not merit Heaven. Yet, a growing faith in Christ, and increasing good works show that God the Holy Spirit is at work in us. Good works become our offering of thanks to Him. They also feed back into our sense of faith. But faith is a gift from God. Yet, we work with that faith.

    Oh, gross. You’re content farming the Faith. You had a sub for ten minutes.
