    The concepts discussed in this video were fantastic, though Stoicism has left a sour taste in my mouth in recent years. My ex tried his best to practice it, but he really did stuff down all his emotions. I guess he thought taking some time to "let it all out" wasn't Stoic? But it ended up hurting him (AND our relationship...sigh). So, sadly, I've only ever had negative first-hand experiences with it. Obviously a person could argue that processing the emotions in a healthy way (and not just ignoring them) could be a Stoic practice. So, idk, maybe he was just "doing it wrong". >_>

    • @Alanflamer
      @Alanflamer 3 роки тому +9

      I think that if he couldn't deal with his emotions, and they ended up exploding, he was not stoic at all. He could be trying, he could think he was doing it, but in the end he was just bottling up. I thing people mix the two, as if they are the same, because of how, generally speaking, the "social media social sciences" talk about them. I can't even believe I lived to see Laci Green talking positively about stoicism, seeing as how much feminism seem to hate it, just because of this mixed up they do.

    • @MrCurbinator
      @MrCurbinator 3 роки тому +5

      Yeah he was doing it wrong. Not his fault though, its a pretty common mistake. Theres been a misunderstanding that is foisted on men as to how to process emotions. It got lost in the hyper masculine Hollywood washout of the 80’s and 90’s, where men started losing touch with the environments that had formed the tenants of healthy masculinity (including stoicism). Any guy who has been forced to become well acquainted with strife, violence, conflict or danger of any kind will be will tell you that bottling your shit up leads to disaster. Therefor stoicism is best done by creating a tight knit support group that can be trusted, then communicating issues in a controlled way, so as to process them with the most amount of perspective possible. This form of stoicism should be in every mans life. Saves a fortune on medical bills and dry wall

    Thank you Laci for another great episode. I feel this topic all the way especially being a Leader. I face a lot of challenges with my subordinates and I use a lot of resilience techniques to help them get through any hardships that come through. One of the main challenges we face a lot is failure but we try to help them understand it's temporary and to learn from it and continue to try rather than giving up. Again thank you for another great topic.

    Just realized, probably a lot of internet rage happens because people find that they can't in fact control what other people in the internet say and do, because there's less personal threat involved in non-face-to-face communication.
    People react to other's expressions and body language, and manipulators use those to guide conversation, and eventually thoughts. And we all manipulate a little bit when speaking, most without realizing it, because we want our conversation partners to like us and agree with us, or we want to agree with them so we follow their cues.
    But texts on screen aren't conveying feeling and emotion well, so nobody feels the intrinsic need to like and agree as they would witch a human present.
    Of course even in person, some people just straight up don't care or are hostile to you or your position so all but the best manipulators are going to find those conversations daunting.

  • @LordOfAllusion
    @LordOfAllusion 3 роки тому

    In listening to this I was thinking about things that I have been wanting or almost obsess over and I realized that maybe a proper stoic mindset would be akin to how we approach video games.
    Even though there is a proper overarching narrative that we’re trying to accomplish, our goals are simple. We know that it’s possible to solve this puzzle. We know it’s possible to win this fight. We know this battle is just one of many more.
    In the midst of this chaotic gunfight, we don’t concern ourselves with the boss fight coming up in an hour or maybe even at the end of the round. We are focused on defeating the challenge in front of us. And if we lose, we don’t (typically) shut down the game forever and burn the chosen console. We start over until we accomplish the next task.
    In video games we live in the moment, explore our options, and try to make our player character the best we can be. We accept that there are aspects of the game we can’t control, and we try to manipulate what rules about the game we CAN control in order in order to achieve our goals.

    Love Marcus Aurelius. I’ve read his Meditations many times. Some beloved principal thoughts I carry with me: put things in a realistic perspective, incl re: brevity of life, futility of fame, past is past, future not here, we only have the moment; if you can change it, do it; if you can’t change it, take another path; enjoy what you have, but don’t love it so much it will be awful to lose it

    Corsets are good for keeping you sitting up straight apparently, properly fitted ones of course.
    I don't think that this comes under stoicism, he was an early christian after all, but Boethius had a good piece of writing on how he dealt with losing his wealth, position in the senate and more while waiting for his execution. He sort of engaged in cognitive behavioural therapy to deal with everything that was happening to him. He changed how he framed the things that were happening in his life too though.

    i'm not an expert but from my lectures i know that in any way stoicism philosophy wants you to maximizing the number of positive emotions. its even the opposite, they wanted you to control your positive and negative emotions. the point of this philosophy is not controlling emotions in order to be happy, but controlling them for promoting virtue and rational thinking.

Feel what you need to feel, understand the reasons for them whether it's failure or life just not working out how you wanted. Being at peace with yourself is important before taking next steps and those are whatever you want them to be. Pushing yourself again, reaching out, shooting for goals again, whatever little steps to help you feel like you're progressing again. Sincerely hope this helps and you have a great day.

    Imo, there's way too many people who either want others to kotow to them or want acceptance from others. As an example; some people at work think the worst of me, but others know I don't tolerate people not doing their job properly. I am abrasive toward those that do and should know better, but not as much toward people who don't (ie new employees). While I don't seek acceptance, I do make sure my employees want to work for me. Not just do the minimum to get by, but work at a high standard because they know I'll go to bat for them when it's needed.
