  • What is an arpeggio? An arpeggio consists of the notes of a chord played in succession or, for example, tones being played as a broken chord instead of a block or solid chord. Arpeggios are common in piano music; in fact, they are a basic building block of harmony. This is why the study and technique pertaining to arpeggios is absolutely necessary for pianists. This four part teaching series will be an excellent resource for information on the finger development needed to play arpeggios. Let’s get started!

I cannot hold 2 & 3down while I move the thumb under. No matter how much I twist my wrist. I must release to play the upper c with my thumb

That is perfectly fine. Never force or over-extend your fingers; keep the movement/stretch gentle. It is always necessary to keep your hand relaxed; this will enable your fingers/thumb to extend further providing more results. Remember, the exercise is to train your hand for more movement and strength; it takes time and repetition. I would also like to recommend my tutorial "Beginning Piano Exercise - Preparation for Scales, Arpeggios, and More." Even if the "Preparation" exercise is easy for you, it will provide more ease for the arpeggio exercises. You are on the right track! 🎵

What fingering you suggest for Db, Eb, Gb, Ab triads, what do you think about some technique -text´s authors who suggest about to use 123 fingering in this particular chords? Thank you

The Db major, Eb major, and Ab major arpeggios are all the same shape and therefore can have the same fingering. For instance, the Db major arpeggio would be 4th finger on Db, thumb on F, 2nd finger on Ab. A general guideline is to play the white note with the thumb when there two black notes in the arpeggio. For root position arpeggios with 3 black notes, the fingering generally would be 1, 2, 3. I hope that helps! 😊🎹

I'm so glad you are learning to play the piano!! This exercise can definitely be challenging. Feel free to move your wrist to allow the thumb to gently stretch. For instance, when the right-hand thumb has trouble reaching under fingers 2 and 3, turn your wrist more to the right, giving your thumb more room to move under your hand. The left-hand wrist will move to more to the left. Be sure to remain gentle; don't over stretch. You will definitely be able to reach this goal little by little. I think one of the next tutorials I'll produce will be a wonderful preparatory exercise that specifically trains and isolates the thumb for moving under the fingers. Stay tuned; I think it will be very helpful. 🎵
