My first electric guitar was a '54 LP Custom Black Beauty, the "Fretless Wonder." I bought it in 1964 for $125.00 from a guy going in the service who never thought he'd play again. It was a lot of guitar, let me tell you. Powerful, thick sound, very heavy though. I sold it Three tears later for $400 and bought a '67 Cherry Red ES 345, gold plated with factory installed Bigsby. Never missed the LP because I really wanted the 345, which was and is a great guitar. Eventually I had three other LP Customs, but the one I have now is an '82 Wine Red Custom with Tim Shaw humbuckers. It's the best one other than the '54 I've owned. Not a great vintage (by the book, at least) but it doesn't matter. A great guitar is a great guitar, period.
Neck Pickup: Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones Both Pickups: Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival Bridge Pickup: I Believe in a Thing Called Love by the Darkness
Years ago I had one of the later re-issues of this guitar, maybe 70s sometime. I recall it was a heavy bugger. Sadly I had to sell it for financial reasons (lack of!) but yes it was really nice! Keep it up Mark, in the last 6 months I have become addicted to GOTD. The prices make my eyes water but then I am in the UK!
Really, really cool, one of my "if I could afford to buy any guitar" guitars. I remember seeing a re-issue(or maybe it was a 40- something or 50-something anniversary re-issue, might've been a used one too, can't remember for sure)version of one of these pre-PAF LP Customs in the '90s at a local music store, and wishing I could buy it. They were asking like $1700.00.
Mark, I dare you to play some Alice In Chains and Blue Oyster Cult. And radio staples are not allowed. All EQ's at noon and a little reverb. HaHa! Digging it!

The Terminator I don't think they carry ibanez or Jackson , there's an older episode where he had a Jackson but I don't think they see the kind of guitar very often
Jonathan Dean that's exactly what I thought. But the wear on the tailpiece and the color of the P/U selector is different. And the CME bridge looked the work on the magnets. But I had the EXACT same feeling.
Didn’t he also use it for Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed? I think that one had some painted psychedelic art on it, totally awesome. I read he used it on Can’t You Hear Me Knockin as well. I swear I remember reading this somewhere lol
Absolutely right. He had the 1960 3 pickup model a few years earlier (see Rock n Roll Circus video.) I wonder though, did Keith use the 72/73 reissue or did he have a true 54/55/56 model? Any idea? I can not seem to find any earlier photos of him with that guitar than 1972/1973 tour...
Al Raymond I believe it was a true 50s model, I want to say it was a 57 but I can’t remember for sure. I bought the stones gear book and it says that basically from aftermath until Sticky Fingers it was his main guitar. It also said he used an ES 330, Non reverse Firebird, Dan Armstrong Plexi, and a weird Maton guitar that he recorded Gimme Shelter and Midnight Rambler with so who knows. I remember reading the Beggars Banquet sessions were basically all done with the Les Paul Custom. The tones on Monkey Man and Cant You Hear Me Knockin definitely sound like it too
I have the ,Epiphone, Les paul Custom 1955 outfit with,Gipson P -90 soubar single coll pickups version. Of this guitar models. I hear you play ,Bad moon Raising.

Funny - I said "three tears" instead of years. I shed more than three tears
every time I sell a guitar!

khravefan52 Doesn’t Bad Moon Rising almost sound like End Of The Line by Traveling Wilburys?
Achilles I think ya mean doesn't End of the Line sound like Bad Moon Rising.
Corey Mineard Oops, ha ha, yes. You're right.
Corey Mineard Doesn’t it though?
both pickups sounded like ''it's all right'' by the traveling wilbury's
"Mark, what's that mean...?" hahahahaha Killin me! :D

Bad moon rising is such a killer song and the way marks bopping with it makes it great to watch and hear
Wow, very beautiful guitar and sounds amazing too! Thanks Mark.

The most beautiful guitar ever made! Amazing!!
Touching YOOOOOOOUUUUUUUU!!!
was NOT expecting Mark to bust out the darkness! loved it!!
My dream guitar... stunning...
My wife has a waffleback and she's a 56......dress size. I don't dare try to pick her up.
absolutely stunning guitar.
Outside of my personal '57 LP Special, the pre-PAF '50s Custom is my Favorite LP all time. Love that Staple ALNICO pickup.
The custom makes up for straturday. Cheers!
Rock and Roll !!! @ 6:02
😅😅😅 Joel is always trolling Mark.
I can hear how much it loves dirt too. Such a Gem.
This guitar just set my EQ at noon. Love the early LPs.
once again les Paul what a wonderful example to the simplicity of rock n roll
This guitar is my dream. Great vid Mark!
My fav version of all the carved-top LPs. Staples rock!
I did.. I sang "there's a bathroom on right".
Mark - I salute you for playing The Darkness!
We love you Mark
Loved all three!!
Mark, thanks for the explanation of ALNICO, I always wondered what that meant. Rock on!!!
Oh, I want THIS guitar, oh man! Gotta be my favorite of all the GOTD guitars.
hope you got lots of cash
Ahhh, the reason I could not find that Guild F40 on your website is that it sold immediately
Okay, I LOVE this one. Exactly my kinda instrument, from the looks of it.
I'm not much of a Gibson guy but man I want one of those and/or a '56 Goldtop.
I'm a fender fan/player, but that les Paul sounded fucking incredible.
That binding is killer.
Wow look at the checking on that. Cool.

Waouuuu love that sound, cool.👍🎶👍
What does aluminum nickel and cobalt mean
RoyalSnow umellt.
It's the construction of the magnets under the windings..
mortensen1961 oh jeez I already know this stuff Mark just said we would ask so I asked sheesh
alneco
On this one the magnets are not under the windings. Those rectangular poles are the magnets.
Dream guitar wow
Beautiful
Gorgeous
Something very cool about old low output alnico pickups
Far out man -- Jen is beautiful xx
Fantastic!
cool guitar thanks!
Marks three favorite songs: 1. Gimme shelter 2. Gimme shelter 3. Gimme shelter
sounds amazing ! really lie the sound of the staple pickup
that is frikken gorgeous...nice playing fella😀big up from Scotland
Great sounding Les Paul that!!
What a beauty!
Florian Wolf
Any Epiphone Wilshires? I'd love to see one on the show!
RoyalSnow What does Wilshire mean?
it's a body shape
Ultimate Les Paul in my book. Don't even need the black leather jacket equipped with all the relic tools.
Dude put some of that stuff on a CD and ill buy it love that stuff !
That's one of me all time 'wish I hads' ...and the condition is remarkable!
Go on, just this once... how much?
Wow ! What a beauty...:-)
Darkness. Yes Mark! Who knew you were a fan. Props
That's pretty crazy that Chicago Music Exchange JUST put up a video of an almost identical custom.
I would love to see a Jackson or an Ibanez on this show, great guitar today by the way.
The Terminator I don't think they carry ibanez or Jackson , there's an older episode where he had a Jackson but I don't think they see the kind of guitar very often
William Nisbet yeah I know but it would be super cool to see one though
The Terminator please
Go to Guitar Center. Norms sells stuff that's worth more than your house - Jackson and Ibanez don't qualify as rare vintage anything
Hahah the darkness!! Gotta love it
damn the lacquer checking!
Just curious Mark, with all those at ur fingertips, what's ur number1, you own?
Hmm, did you buy this from CME? They did a video for a 56 Black Beauty and it sold, now you guys have one a few days later.
Jonathan Dean that's exactly what I thought. But the wear on the tailpiece and the color of the P/U selector is different. And the CME bridge looked the work on the magnets. But I had the EXACT same feeling.
Jonathan Dean same for me. But no this isn't the same. Not the same scratch on the body.
Damn Mark is The Riff Master !!!! By the way awesome guitar
Keith Richards played one just like that one on the 1972 & 73' tours.
You sure it had P90's ? Because I remember a 3 humbucker version with bigsby!??!
@@jessicawalden6072 yes sir, you can type in Keith Richard's 1973 tour and see a few photos of him playing it
Didn’t he also use it for Beggars Banquet and Let it Bleed? I think that one had some painted psychedelic art on it, totally awesome. I read he used it on Can’t You Hear Me Knockin as well. I swear I remember reading this somewhere lol

best job in the world
Mark, do you pick songs that originally used the same guitar you're playing?
Louder please...... definitely a beauty 😍
I hear this '56 being recognized more and more.
awesome
alnico alloy makes for a stronger magnet - so, louder, probably, and maybe more faithful sound reproduction
Darkness,perfect selection
What's that instrument on your left shoulder at the start? It looks like a banjo case or something but I'm guessing there are no banjos in the store.
Any coincidence that the Chicago Music Exchange channel did a video with a 56 LP Custom the other day?
The p 90 by itself sounds the best ! Fuckin rad
Can’t believe he kept that leather jacket on. I would have told him, “You just bought it!”
Did they get this from Chicago Music Exchange?
Very good......
what pedal you're using? this tone is so cool
awesome! and WOO! THE DARKNESS!!!
Oh baby....Uhn!
Can you do a Gretsch Duo Jet or a Gibson Marauder please?
Did you check if they have them? He can't just do one if he does not have it
Fluro Flash Thanks, the website doesn't always seem to reflect what they have. They also have a warehouse or storage space filled with goodies.
I'll take two ✌🏻
I remember last year you guys had a couple of Strats come through. Maybe one will show up in the summer. haaha
Is that pickup configuration original? I thought the 56's came with two staple pickups.
Just tune it to open e when u do gimme ,sounds so much better than standard
Mark what does les paul custom mean
I always think he's gonna bang a guitar on those shelves
When you opened the case I thought "vampire guitar".
I shouldn't cry..
The bowling alley called,,, need you in the back resttin pins!!!!
What was the last song he played?
There's one for 27 grand out there on the Interwebs.
The carves on that thing the 56 and ealier seem to go a lil deeper then the ones that get pumped out today
I just saw an Epiphone kind of try on these Fretless Wonders. They seem alright for 1% of the price of this one! Hahhaha!
I have the ,Epiphone, Les paul Custom 1955 outfit with,Gipson P -90 soubar single coll pickups version. Of this guitar models. I hear you play ,Bad moon Raising.
I can't stop watching these. I have to get some work done god dammit!
I like the camera zooming/moving around while playing for the visuals, but for the sound it kinda sucks!
one day he's gonna be like the final guitar of the day and we'll say don't you mean of the week and he'll say NOPE
Knuckleheadmcspazatron that'll be awesome
There is rad, then there's freekin' rad!
