I wasn't even looking at the screen when you broke into "Ten Years Gone" and, man, that thing has THAT tone. Everyone may be raving about how it looks (with good reason) but it also SOUNDS like a million bucks worth of Les Paul. 100% Pure Awesome.
I've owned a natural top 76 custom since 1984 (you can hear it on my videos), so I can understand how much you love this one. Mine has no flame at all, but it always has been beautiful, and I would never consider getting rid of it. I did have Mike Lull (rest in peace!) refret it and plek it in 2019. He also swapped in some 500k pots which opened up the guitar tremendously, increased the output and made it less dark.
It didn’t have 500k pots from the factory? Or is that when they switched to the 300k for a while . I haven’t watched this whole video yet so if Trogly mentioned it I apologize.
@@allstopblue5717 Nope. 300k (or less haven't checked em on a meter) Mike Lull took one look at it and he said "let me check the pots", and yep they weren't 500k. I guess the pots from that era have been known to be 300k or less, especially from the Nashville factory. He explained how all my signal was dumping to ground. I saved the old pots but would never reinstall them myself. I played the guitar over 30 years with that dark cloud holding it back 🤣
Funny how many people associate George with the rosewood telecaster considering his general dislike of it. Didn't use it very often after the rooftop concert, gave it to Delaney Bramlett. George really liked the strat and les paul though, Rocky and Lucy were kept around and used for the rest of his career. It might be neat to see the Gibson Lucy reissue on the show.
Interesting fact about rosewood Teles, if you watch the Festival Express movie you can see Jerry Garcia playing one in1970. It could have belonged to someone else but he wasn't exactly known for playing other people's axes. Truth is that Jerry actually played a lot of different guitars even though he is only identified with a few.
I'm pretty sure that was once George Harrison's rosewood Tele, if I remember right he gave it to Delaney Bramlett as a gift and Delaney and Bonnie were on the Festival Express tour.
@@markbaum9615 yes and interestingly the first guitar work Doug Irwin did for Jerry was modifying the Alligator Strat. In the output jack cover is a treble boost that became the Alembic Blaster which you can still buy. Another early fan of Irwin's work was Lowell George from Little Feat. He's the one that turned Jerry on to him.
OH MY GOODNESS!!! That is such a beautiful guitar! My gosh! The gold is fabulous! No wear through on the bridge or tail piece! The flamed 3 piece maple neck! No string scratches on the headstock! And the top! A two piece that the center seam is slightly off center with that beautiful triangle! Oh my! I LOVE THIS GUITAR!!! Great find and I know it will be cared for!
Being a custom furniture Builder I can tell you that natural top has "Quilting" layers to it rather than a "Flame" top. Absolutely beautiful either way. Love it. I like the Yeti myself.
You’ve have a lot of cool guitars you’ve shared with us but I’m with you, top three if not higher in your collection. That is stupid gorgeous and sounds great.
its awesome to see trogly getting some of the rare wood gibsons because he is the man that will carry the torch for the future of guitars and the knowledge to coming generation's
The gold plating is in amazing condition for a guitar that old. I like the pancake/sandwich body construction. I think it adds a bit of extra interest to the side of the guitar. The great thing about natural finishes is the grain of the wood makes every one unique. Even non-flame or non-birds-eye tops can have an interesting pattern.
Fender stratocaster came like this in the 1970s. I'm thinking just a few more of these types will show up on the market. Maybe 3. At the most . Your right about the namm show. That's we're they were both sold That explains the hang tag. And the different case. No pop out winder's. The dealer at the namm show made up the storyline of G. Harrison. To get top dollar.
I'm not sure Gibson needed to "win over" George Harrison. He started playing Gibsons in 1962 when he bought a J-160E. From there he played an ES-345, SG Standard, J-200, not to mention the red 1957 Standard he got from Eric Clapton. There are people who have meticulously and obsessively studied and documented the instruments the Beatles used, there's no way this guitar would be unknown if George owned it.
I owned a 74 custom in white that faded to creme a la Randy Rhodes as a kid. That Guitar reeked of laquer when I opened the case I still remember the smell. Mine had a 3 piece maple neck and no pancake construction.
Isn't She Lovely< Isn't Stevie Wonderful? oops, carried away - that top is like we're drunk, get dizzy and fall over. There were some Natural one offs Sticker pups like, a '71 sold recent Reverb - plain top. The middle posit. on this bad boy is to die for!!
Sounds really good for a custom.....those pickups are rich with tone... I'd love to hear them played through a Marshall half stack ..or even a Friedman
Seems probable by calling Gibson and giving the serial number it may have a reference to where it was sold and if George H has also any connection. Martin Guitars always knows about serial number ones, and generally has them in their museum. Example the 200th anniv. D45’s
I generally do not like the Natural finish on LPs, but that one is gorgeous and special. That Brazilian Rosewood top is gorgeous as well, but I'm certain that both of those would be way out of my price range if they were for sale. Those are definitely keepers, though.
Beautiful guitar. Having been born in '74 (mid December), I often think it'd be cool to own a Les Paul that was made about that time (even better if it weighed 10lb 3.5oz, as I did when born), but it's not likely to happen.
So I own 1976 Gibson Les Paul Recording. Always wondering why mine had a three piece Maple neck. Thus the first year with the three piece Maple neck. And last year with the original design lay out. I always wondered why it wasn't mahogany like my 1973 Les Paul Triumph. See this video pointed out why but not till 1976 did that neck make to Recording. 1975 and all earlier where mahogany. Thanks again for updating my gibson history. Stay safe and enjoy. Thought I would share that little Gibson history update. Another special thing. Live in Pa. And not 20 miles away is a 1976 Recording for sale just one serial after mine. Not with chainsaw case though and mine looks better more original cover plate. But was amazed by that. Even write the shop. Not amazed about it as I was. Just bragged about his. Once again thanks for filling in my void.
About pancake bodies: On literally ALL the ones I've seen (especially with natural finished sides) the pancake layer has been the same general shade of brown as the mahogany that sandwiches it. There is no way it's maple, even though that's what absolutely every source says, and I would bet good money on this.
You said steel wool could erase the anniversary logo, but wouldn't bending steel strings during playing do that also? Just a question. Love your show. Bought a Les Paul Studio and a standard SG since I started watching!!
Beautiful find Trogly you should get in touch with George Harrison's estate his son may have documentation on serial number?George had thousands of guitars arround the world in storage,Cheers!
Man what a beautiful guitar , but man the top on my Standard I would challenge your top Vs the top on my guitar brother, but I can’t compete with the back lol I just got mahogany back n neck so u crush me there !!! Lol all in good gun bro! Lol for real you got such a killer collection and you have taught me so dang much , I just thought I knew my Gibsons lol Love the show I watch it daily , mabye I can send you this ole Standard with its AAA Flamed top and no it’s not as pretty as yours man wow what a beauty!!!
I bought a 1976 les paul beautiful maple top nearly exzact to the one austin is holding but I traded it off in dec 1977 at work for a car. I miss that guitar and think of her often as for the car long recycled by now.
I thought Macca had left handed Les Pauls during his time in Wings AFAIK ... although he did play some right handed rosewood teles as a leftie during Wings .... I remember seeing photos of this ....
Most high end Les Pauls don't do much for me but holy crap this is one of the sweetest Customs EVER.
Vincent do you like my 2018 cherry sunburst Traditional?

Yes it has that tone. I listened to that segment (around 21:00) several times and that tone gave me goosebumps. So rich and clear. Good find Trogly.
I concur 10 years after deliveryman.
I've never seen Jimmy use a Fender amp...and it still sounded that good.

That top is transcendental. It’s like the God of Maple sent it to Gibson.

Jerry played various brands in the early daze......then he discovered Alembic with Doug Irwin... ....

@@markbaum9615 How about that Travis Bean guitar with the solid steel neck he played for a bit not an Alembic but quite the outlier!
I'm pretty sure that was once George Harrison's rosewood Tele, if I remember right he gave it to Delaney Bramlett as a gift and Delaney and Bonnie were on the Festival Express tour.

In 1973, I purchase a new Gibson Les Paul Custom. I loved that guitar but the gold finish discolored and pitted pretty quickly.

If you don't like the pickguard covering up the quilted maple top, get a clear pickguard made for it and throw the original in the case.
Just picked myself a 79 LPC in natural, and it is a beast of a guitar, but also the sweetest clean sounding guitar I’ve owned. I love it
That is a beautiful LP!!! Wow!!! Whenever you get your museum open I’d love to see that in person… just absolutely breathtaking!!! Thanks Trogly!!!
