#1 Trap hi hat trick for finger drummers

- After discovering how to do drum rolls by swiping across the pads of an 8x8 pad controller (specifically, my Launchpad X) I figured we could apply that same concept when playing those super fast trap hi hats, so this video demonstrated how that is done and, more importantly, that it sounds awesome!
Setup instructions can be found here (in the drum roll blog post):

This guy is always sharing gems! If you’re not Subscribed to his channel...you’re missing out!
Wow sick beat, especially since you’re someone who focuses less on trap. Looking forward to new videos as always, especially once I get my Launchpad X in in January!
Thanks! Lots more stuff is coming in 2020. Let me know how you like the launchpad!
Love this channel. Just ordered a launchpad x today. Keep these great tutorials coming!
Will do, thank you!
Clever. Great lil cheat code bro, I might use this. The pads on the launchpads are nice, if a bit small.
I finally did this last night on my Lauchpad X. I also found I can consistently get double taps on the pads when I want. This is sometimes a problem, but with the mirrored drum kit, it is easier to do it when I want and prevent it when I don't want it and the result seems like something that shouldn't work, but I can do pretty decent rolls just with two pads. Not something you can do easily double finger tapping a single pad.
I did mine in Bitwig (works the same in Ableton Live) by copying the original 4x4 grid drum kit sounds to the required pads in the higher note pads groups, which allows me to keep the original drum kit on a 4x4 grid in its default MIDI mapping. But I can switch to an 8x8 drum grid and I get the mirrored drum kit when desired. In Bitwig, I used Jürgen Moßgraber's DrivenByMoss driver which adds Ableton like support for Lanchpads to Bitwig. In Ableton, when a drum kit is selected, you can just press the up key to do the same.
Nice! 8x8 is a lot of fun with all these weird possibilities that you have all of a sudden. I keep coming up with new stuff as well :-) your setup sounds very good as well!
tof man! haha i loved how at 1:44 your face started to go all gangsta all of a sudden :D see ya 🍀
Sometimes pulling a face makes a difference. This was take 3 and hands down the best one with that face :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove hahaah yeaah i totally feel you on that! ;) love your channel by the way, discovered you i think 2 days ago. great stuff 🙏🏼
@@evanmotions ah thanks! This is the last video of 2019 but I'll keep em coming in 2020 after the christmas break :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove I'll be looking out for 'em! fijne feestdagen! (I'm assuming you're dutch too) 🍀
@@TheQuestforGroove quick question by the way, I have a Novation Launchkey Mini MK3. Do you reckon that is enough for a beginner into finger drumming, or is the layout of the pads not effective enough for what you're teaching? thank you
that stank face!!! you gotta make more of these videos man! make your own trap style beat with the most complicated rhythmic high hat patterns played live!
Haha thanks! Stank face really helped getting the grime in there :-) 2020 will be the year of many more performances!
I appreciate you man. Thanks for your excellent videos
So so cool!!
Damn bro your a genies :)) I was actually working on my 1/16 speed around 180 specifically for trap hats. Now? F**k that :))) Thank you really
Hahaha, yeah for that I wouldn't work on speed. There are lots of other cool things you can do where you do need speed so it's worth working on tour technique, but the thing with trap hats is that they were "born" programmed. Nobody played them live :-)
LOL good one! Nice bag of tricks mister :)
Thanks for this.
Hey, really cool method! Haven't seen anybody else use this. I'm in the market for a pad controller and was wondering if the Push 2 allows you to "glide" this easily over the buttons too or is this unique to the launchpad?
Yeah you can do it in the push! I actually did a workshop where someone with a push set this up after I explained it and it worked.
@@TheQuestforGroove Thanks for the quick reply man, you're the best
Genius
Hey Rob,
I'm getting into the launchpad gig and I have looked this up everywhere, but could you explain how to set up the custom mode like that and assign the colors and beats to it in Ableton.
I really love your content and I aspire to be more like you!
Please let the beginner community know how to start sick beats and covers like this.
Thanks!
If you do my beginner course on questforgroove.com (free!) I explain all the basics of my playing!
Hey man! i stumbled upon your channel and im getting a launchpad x soon! was wondering where you get your drum samples from? Thanks man!
Those are Addictive Drums 2!
Oh and maybe some from the other instrument XLN audio has... it's called XO.
@@TheQuestforGroove thank you!! Great videos btw! 🙌🏻🙌🏻
Superb. We've talked in your comment section about 4 x 4 vs 8 x 8 before. I've yet to invest in either because this is just one musical interest of mine (and I'm indecisive AF, lol). For my music, I don't ever see myself playing a traditional drum kit; I'm all about synths and weird sounds. It seems like a Launchpad X may give me more opportunity to groove with synth drum sounds, where artificially rapid playing is used often. Would you still steer me towards a 4 x 4 because I'm a finger drumming beginner?
Well, if you're someone who likes to fiddle around with synths and weird sounds and also do some finger drumming i would say get the launchpad x. You can mess around with it and have countless options for how to set things up. A 4x4 like the maschine mikro is ideal for finger drumming especially as a beginner because the pads are easy to hit, you can memorise the location of the sounds faster and it will help you focus on what matters (groove) instead of having an endless amount of buttons to play with :-)
So for fun and synth + drumming combo get the launchpad x. For specifically getting better as a finger drummer get a 4x4.
Cooooool I broke my head how I'm going to do it..
Hy Robert, how are the pads in comparing to the ones on a Push 2 ?
Launchpad X and the push seem kinda similar. The launchpad pro mk3 might actually be little more sensitive than the push.
@@TheQuestforGroove Are the pads smaller in height from the launchpad than the Push 2, I know Push 2 got wide pads because they are rectangular.
I'm not sure but I think the launchpay pro mk3 pads are a little smaller in height as well.
@@TheQuestforGroove Aaiitt man, tnx fr the info, cause of the Covid-situation it will take a while to test them out. Cheers ! love yr show !!!
nice :)

oh wow cool idea. i've already ordered the X and that's going to be the first thing i try with it
you sound kinda ill tho. you okay?
I'm 100% fine! I am a bit tired :-) Going on holiday tomorrow and starting the new year fresh and healthy :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove wooo!! wishin you a speedy recovery, and have fun whenever you do. i still kinda have a whole week before my holiday starts :c
Stankface activated. Hahahaha
It makes difference in the groove :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove It must do. Its so universal.
@@TheQuestforGroove I think someone should make a documentary about finger drummers. I think even as someone that is interested in music production it's such an undiscovered mysterious branch of music. I'd love to but I really don't know enough about the subject. I think it would focus less on people that we knew used MPCs for production and more on people that we know had exceptional skills. A brief history and maybe a current generation.
Just an idea maybe someone could see this and run with it.
Like ....can the drummer get some??
But... look at the video just before this one. If you take the whole layout one pad to the right: your are now able to use this trick with two complete bands of pads to the left side ! In your two jams, you didn't use the very right ones at all...
Oh yeah absolutely there are many variations you can make with this!
Rob this is legit FIRE!!! Love it my dude!! Enjoy your holidays looking forward to more heat in the new year!!
Haha, thanks! I'll be back!
It is nice seeing you exited about your new discovery. Congrats and thanks for sharing it.
Thank you Im buying this unit soon...
Why did I not think of that? I always thought about it as a loop. I'm just watching all of your vids, dont mind me.
edit: Could you once do a video where you just play different genres? Like not a tutorial, but show/compilation of your previous playing.
Hey thanks for your undivided attention! :-) I played quite a lot of songs and styles. As for songs, you probably wanna take a look on this page. It has a bunch of links to UA-cam vids where I play songs. Some of them are tutorials but some are just playthrougs. For example: The Police - Can't stand losing you, Green Day - Basket Case, Run DMC with a twist, Vampire Weekend A Punk >> questforgroove.com/learnthis/playing-songs/
Oh and here's another one that was not included on that page: ua-cam.com/video/RITHVnoj80Y/v-deo.html
@@TheQuestforGroove Thanks! Exactly what I needed.
While waiting for my launchpad pro, I am trying to figure out if I can remap the drum pad layout to this layout when using hardware drum machine with GM mapping. Can I set a custom layout on launchpad when using hardware drum machine?
Ben je Nederlands?
Ja!
Great idea!! Quick question, which sensitivity setting do you use on the LP X? Thanks :)
I tested 3 of them and I set two if them to medium and one to light. They're not 100% the same in terms of pad sensitivity.
😍😍😍
Man you're so versatile, I love it. Is there any way I can hear the beat you made for the TV show?
That's the one actually. It's the backing track for this returning segment called the History Rap. Imagine George Washington rapping about his life (without saying his name) and then the kids had to guess who was rapping :-). But this was the exact music used.
@@TheQuestforGroove Oh sick man, great work. I definitely dig the beat. I'll have to peep that show sometime haha. Did you just make this one beat for the show?
No I did things for them every year but unfortunately the show got canceled. So this is the first year in like 5 years that I'm not working for them making fun tracks. The show is Dutch and you seem to not be able to access the content outside if the Netherlands. So its hard to share.
Yo dude, loved the vid! For what tv show did you have to make the beat, if I may ask? :)
It's a show called BVQ (it's a dutch show that's called "best friends quiz" but in dutch). For kids. And theres a segment called "history rap" where some historical figure raps about his or her life. People like Julius Caesar, Cleopatra,, Columbus. Real funny :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove damn man, had geen idee dat je voor Nederlandse tv muziek maakte! Hopelijk krijgt je channel ook wat meer exposure want het is echt fantastisch! Keep it up!
@@TheQuestforGroove Hahahaaha shit, maak je klaar voor de "You stole this from a Dutch kids show" type comments! En ja, maar ik ben zelf niet zo'n persoon dat veel fingerdrumming doet dus zo zie je dat zelfs een ander publiek komt koekeloeren, maar wat algemene production type videos zouden je zeker naar boven helpen stijgen, my guy ;)
Very nice groove and samples :)
Samples are from XLN audio "XO". And the groove is mine I guess :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove XO Accoustic library is good? Kits are layered?
@@phosphore7991 well it's just samples. So no different samples for different velocities. I use it for that electronic sound. It's basically a drum computer with a lot of tools for programming and shaping beats. But I'm using it to play live :-) takes some time to set up. I used a nore mapper plugin to link the right pads to the right sounds and stuff. But once that is done, theres a very large library of sounds that's easy to navigate!
@@phosphore7991 for acoustic I'd get addictive drums 2 :-)
@@TheQuestforGroove Thx for the reply ;)
This is great! Nice to see a channel in this lane where the creator actually has talent.
Thank you! I'll keep em coming. Thanks for watching!
Very clever idea. Good execution and beat as well.
