I'm on about level 3. Playing 16th note breakbeats. Practicing paradiddles and as of yesterday paradiddle inversions with both hands. I really want to get to the sample triggering stage but I need more grooves before that.
Nice! That's a great place to be! Paradiddles for life mate, they're so fun. But yeah holding down a groove is going to be way more foundational than any crazy sampling stuff. Althouuuuggh you could layer some samples onto your kick/hat/snare/crash so that you're only playing the groove, but you're still getting to hear some other samples. That's one way I've been playing a lot lately. Check out my video on "how to make a layered drum rack" if you wanna know more about that.

I also noticed The Artist’s way behind you, I recently got that and stopped a couple chapters in because it seemed like a lot of hocus pocus to me to be perfectly honest. Mind you I’m big into personal development so I’m not the type who’s against self-help, I have books for days. Just wondering your thoughts on/experience with that book if you’ve finished it. Might be a useful idea for a future video 🤷🏽♂️
The Artist's Way is one of those books that you only really need at a certain time in your life, so for some people it might feel a bit whatever, but for others it can totally change their life for the better. Maybe one day you'll come back to it and it'll resonate in a totally different way. I love the idea of doing some book reviews actually, I'm totally going to write that down on my ideas list! I practice thumb on a kick, index finger on snare and the middle is a hi-hat, all allocated bottom-up in the middle two rows of a 4*4 grid.
Nice! Yeah all of this should work with any layout that works for you. Seeing everyone’s unique approach is one of my favorite parts of e-drumming. I come from a marching percussion background where there is tons of “correct” prescriptive ways of doing things so the radical individual freedom is so refreshing.

Hey, mate! Amazing video it seems like im between 4-5 levels. Can you give us some recommendations for learning materials because they are not that easy to find it seems like? I watched all JBlacks Old Video Tutorials and Checked few sections from Quest For Groove.
Yeah sure! Well of course you can cruise through the rest of my page, I have some great videos on building skill and technique.
Im a big rudiments fan coming from marching percussion so I would recommend broadening your scope from "fingerdrumming" to just "drumming" when looking for learning resources. A good 90% of technique, music theory, groove, etc. is the same no matter what you're drumming on.
If you're looking to do more acoustic style stuff Dragon Finger Drums has some great tutorials. The Sample Music Festival does the fingerdrumming world championships and a bunch of other stuff so you can follow them and all the people that show up in that ecosystem.
But honestly the biggest resource is actually going to be yourself and your own curiosity. Just play around and have fun with it! Fingerdrumming is such a new art that there are very few rigid guidelines or traditions, so you can make up your own techniques and styles. Just remember to have fun with it :) hope that helps!

So much good information here. Why not use thumbs? I’ve found using more of a vertical pattern layout easier, and the thumb is used for the kick. I’m maybe at level 5 here.
Nice, level five is great! These are focussed more on the complexity of playing than on the actual technique so you should be able to do most of them in a variety of different layouts. Glad you've found one that's working for ya! Lately I've been using my thumbs more to trigger extra samples and crashes and such. Definitely a useful digit lol 👍🏽

Nice demo dude!, do you find this drum pad layout is optimal for you? Also, how did you address the arrangement view overdub issue with push 2 in ableton?
Yeah I have a pretty unique drum layout that I've developed just based on my own style of playing. I have a video on the channel breaking down where I normally arrange all of my drum racks. As for the overdub issue I'm not sure what you mean exactly, care to explain? Maybe I can help.
@@hawtcocomusic Thanks for your reply man :) When you are in arrange view in ableton, set a loop for 4 bars. Arm a track with a drum rack and start hitting pads. Once it loops back over it will begin to record over the top of the previously hit notes replacing everything. If you hit the "+" at the top of the ableton UI, it activates the "arrangement overdub" which gets rid of this issue and lets you add to whatever drum pads recorded in the 1st loop through (so you can build the drum loop over many loops).
My question is how do you hit the overdub arrangement option from the push 2? I find it kinda annoying that it appears ableton push 2 does not have a button to switch on/off the overdubing of MIDI notes? By default push 2 seems to loops and record over the top
@@CH-fb4lz I don't have a ton of experience using overdubbing personally, but I think the Push 2 is primarily designed for Session view overdubbing instead of Arrangement view. If you're still struggling with it after awhile I suggest you hit up AbletonDrummer.com. they'll either have some tools that will help with this, or Tobi can even make you some custom plugin stuff to help, he's amazing at this kind of stuff.
Here's what I found in the Push 2 Manual: Press the Record button to begin recording. Now any Drum Rack pads you play will be recorded to the clip. Pressing Record again will stop recording but will continue playing back the clip. Pressing Record a third time will enable overdub mode, allowing you to record into the clip while it plays back. Subsequent presses continue to toggle between playback and overdub. During playback, a small progress bar will appear in the display to show the playback position of each playing clip.

For affecting the gain with velocity there is a knob in the bottom right of the simpler called “Vol

This is called the Ableton Push 2. Really great hardware if Ableton is your DAW.

real drummer here that also translates it to pads. You gotta give yourself the best chance with some bigger pads than a push offers. You've managed to get around this and work your muscle memory to align with tiny pads like that, but nobody should really be expected to do this. You want to be able to smash larger pads if you want to and not feel like you're dancing on a typewriter.
You're not using all 16 pads here. So no reason not to use something limited to 16 pads that are much larger. Get a Preonus ATOM for cheap and you'll be able to use two fingers on one hand to trigger and still have enough real estate on the pad. You're already good with this handicap. So you will absolutely take off flying on something with larger pads.
I have indeed played on a lot of bigger pads! Also very fun. I’m not sure if you’ve played on a push but it might be easier to play with the smaller pads than you think.
I’ve also had a lot of fun making 64-pad drum racks that operate more by “zones” than individual pads so that I can be more expressive- planning on making a vid about that soon!
But to be honest fingerdrumming will always be 2nd to drumming with sticks for me. The tactile experience of the stick and the sensation of some good rebound… there’s just nothing like it. 🥁
@@hawtcocomusic Hats off for evolving your own efforts like that. It all really comes down to what you are working with, what you are trying to accomplish and what makes you pleased with the results. I ultimately decided on a direction more similar to Spinscott. Where it's more about smashing out processed classic breakbeats that have been sliced up and no velocity to volume on the 16 pads. It just seems to favor the Dilla way of making the most out of the least. Your technique requires serious finger dexterity and exactness to get around those lil pads.
I know I can't finger drum for shit. I have to do one sound at a time. Spastic
It's all good, that's how your start! Soon you'll be able to build up to two sounds at a time and you'll only go up from there. Just stick with it! And let me know if there are any topics I could cover that might help you with your process :)
