    My wife saw these and told me we have to have some of these, so we picked up 6 from a local grower and I’m building them a separate pen and coop of their own to make sure they are not bullied by my other chickens, as these are my wife’s pets they will no doubt be pampered, we will likely grow them to sell not to eat and I may have them raise my young chicks and ducklings as I understand they make excellent mothers and will raise other birds young as their own.

    surprisingly my silkie is the most dominant hen I have. She’s always docile but if pecked by other hens she puts them in their place. I have 3 Rhode Islands and none of them are dominant over her. There even one Rhode Island that fears her.

      I have one aggressive silkie hen and one who wouldn't hurt a fly. Very funny but the sweet one who gets beat up cries when removed from the mean one, funny how that works.

    I’ve been bugging my parents to death to get a silkie chicken since we’re planning to get 3 or 4 chooks. We have a very small backyard but it’s the perfect size to have a silkie in it.
    And of course to show I’m committed to getting and taking care of my favourite breed of my favourite type of bird I’m researching the hell out of what I need to do to keep the chooks happy

    We just lost our 4 month old Silkie rooster to Marek’s disease. We got him after I lost my bantam rooster to a predator. He was the only silkie we had, so definitely will have to get more in the future.

    I bought 4 for a hell of a deal today! 50$ for a blue rooster and 3 blue hens. The lady had a blue splash hen that she sold her to me for an extra $20. They are such an interesting breed!
    I'm excited to have them

    I hatched 3 silkies for our yard, unfortunately the heatwave killed two suddenly the other day. The third one, who has crossbeak is now an inside chicken so I don't risk losing her to the heat as well. She is so well behaved, I'm surprised how affectionate she is, much like a dog or cat. Spoiled to the bone, but nonetheless probably the best kind of pet you could ask for.

    • @mobstercrow7515

      Keep them inside when it gets too hot! Extreme heat will kill any animal, including humans. I'm getting chickens to keep in my house and I suggest you do to. My aunt used to keep her chickens inside before she died from cancer. They are very clean animals and they even make diapers for them.

    • @ahorseofficial
      @ahorseofficial Рік тому

      @@mobstercrow7515 Yes, I'm keeping everyone inside. I'm in Texas and we've had many summers that would get hot, but never hot enough to kill our chickens (in fact they seemed comfortable in it). This was really strange and sudden, but I suppose it has to do with silkies specifically. None of the other chickens, dogs, or goats had any problem with the heatwave. Lesson learned I suppose :(

      @@ahorseofficial They have thermometers on amazon that you can connect to your phone so you can check the temperature inside of their coop and run. I highly recommend buying one! Silkies are also very bad for the heat and cold since they don't really have feathers.

    Our silkies are very timid. Our rooster on the other hand never backs down from the other roosters. He even takes on our bronze breasted tom turkey. Our Rhode Island reds are very nice to our silkies. I have to say the silkies make excellent mothers.

    Do you have any tips for introducing silkies into a flock of other more aggressive breeds? I have a flock of 5 road island red hens and 3 Australorps. They have a massive coop/run and they free range in the afternoons. I would like to add some silkies but knowing that they tend to be more docile and will be much younger I am thinking it might be a bad idea to try and mix the two, though I don't really have the time or space to build a separate coop/run.
