It's so weird to me how Carhartt has become "trendy". Carhartt was founded as, and always has been, a brand focused on making extremely rugged work clothes for manual laborers. They make the best stuff and my ass has been kept warm by Carhartt coveralls many times while wrenching on cars in cold temperatures. I really hope this newfound "trendiness" doesn't stray them away from their historical precedent.

I remember when in middle school to high school for me in 2010, The North Face was suuuper popular. All the cool kids had a certain North face jacket. It surprised me that the jackets were pretty damn expensive, but I soon realized that most quality jackets are. I think it's better to spend a few hundred on a nice jacket that will last you a long time and keep you warm, than to buy a cheap jacket that wont last long.
Speaking of Supreme, I think they'd be a good company to make a video about. They have a pretty unique and interesting business model where they deliberately make their products limited edition and difficult to get a hold of in order to increase hype (a little similar to what you talked about in the beanie baby video). The whole collaborating with "random" companies and products, their stuff having a huge re-sell value etc. There's a lot to talk about.

@@A_78939 a brand cannot survive off hype alone, they've long since not been a skater brand, no skater can actually get it. So should they ever produced more, they'd lose their "hype", and remember this, supreme doesn't get any of that "resale" money. Other people are making money off their name, and not supreme itself. So it's not necessarily a company that's "killing it" financially. Especially if all their "hype" can go away overnight, if the "kids" decide supreme is "over" now. So long as kids keep feeding into it, and keep buying a shirt for more than triple it's original price, then supreme can keep being supreme. But it's a brand with a Sword of Damocles having over it.
Looking to buy a Winter coat I came across the perfect one; all the features I wanted, all the tech I didn't know I needed, and it looked fine. It was labeled "North Face," a company I hadn't heard of (though I understood the meaning) and, it was quite pricy. Since it had everything I was looking for I bought it and … it was the best coat I've ever owned.

Jim Young - I can't speak for their low end stuff. Their synthetic down (thermoball) is actually superior to patagonia's synthetic (nano puff). Their tents are on the level of big Agnes (who is a pretty premier company). When I'm looking for outdoor gear than tends to be on the higher end, one of their products is usually in my top 3 choices. My two fav base layer tops are both north face

Like their coats and jackets because they are less bulky then others but provide the same protection agains the elements. Seems like the high end label conscious consumers have moved on to other brands but they are a good middle of the road option.

whats your point? this is the basis of marketing. building a brand sells your business. its the same reason reviews are so incredibly important to a brand. when one person likes it, the next is far more likely to try it.

Also a Canadian, and I would also love a video on the HBC. The HBC is the oldest active company in the world. At their peak, they pretty much controlled the entire fur trading market in what is now Canada. Nowadays, they are a moderately-sized retail company.

Anything expensive is "hype". Juuls, Apple products, TNF, Patagonia. Hype is just peak marketing. (Which can be a very good thing)

Yup in my area people who wear north face typically drive brand new chevy tahoe and wear ugg boots 🤣. whereas people who wear Patagonia typically drive a honda civic, smoke weed and call themselves a progressive 🤣
Those in know are aware that, similar to Nike, Adidas, Under Armor, etc, North Face is a fashion/image brand first and an athletic company second.
Their good stuff is good. REALLY good. But more than half of their stuff is barely a step above generic, with a brand name logo slapped on. And the difference between their performance and their leisure apparel isn't always obvious to the untrained eye. The prices are almost the same.
Agreed. and the same could be said about many other brands, such as for example Fjällräven, of which I have a few items, such as 3 backpacks, a pair of trousers and a jacket. The Kajka backpack is very well designed with for example it's adjustable shoulder width, which I use for when wearing just a tshirt or wider if I have many layers on - brilliant, and the outer side pockets which in theory can carry say a dringing bottle angles and easier to reach, but because of the elastical string, will drop the bottle real soon, which I di ;) But the thing about G1000 material in it's many variants I don't really get. It reminds me of the old English "oilskin" fabric, which was a pre-modern times invention of trying to make a fabric that could repel water, except that it didn't. My Fjällräven Bergtangen hardshell is their most extreme hardshell jacket and is.. not waterproof, no matter how much I impregnate it with their own stuff. And it wears pretty quickly and gets holes easily. The shape and function of say zippers is very good, hence I still use it and it is very silent when wearing it, contrary to a super noisy arcteryx jacket, which is about themost noisy jacket I've come across. Back to the Kajka backpack, which looks very bad even before use, because of the G1000 material (and it's variants). On the Fjällräven trousers, I am supposed to heat up their wax combo and melt it into the fabric. Except it won't repel water, but it will make them feel dirty and sticky. My Fjällräven light insulated jacket is stuffed with Primaloft, which in itself is okay, but the outer material is so thin, that it wears downand gets holes almost right from the start. It works well, but for a fairly short while.
For example, why is it, that most hardshell jackets have a strange string tying placement so that when in use, it can be felt on the back of the head? Why not design it better?
So I got this The North Face dufflebag, generation 4. Works well, but why can't The North Face not make a combination of their 3 earlier models, and we can benefit from all the experiences we've had through those? I also have a TNF hardshell Steep Series in Futurelight, which was waterrepellant at start, but that quickly went south also. It would seem that on each generation, TNF makes something well, and something goes south. It's still better than any, I believe. Why not give it a couple of daisy chains inside on each side? And why make the stiching worse on the newest model?
Another example: the old model Rolling Thunder had better handle, better aluminium stays, better wheels and better back than the present day model, so I finally gave up on that and bought a Ortlieb RG85 instead. Same goes for boots. Some boot benerations just split and some works well. I think some knows the Nepal for example. My old Scarpa Phantom Ghost doesn't and I still have them, though they do wear on the outside of the boot itself. Hmmm... The best hardshell I've had was the now since long defunct Lowe Alpine ceramic triple point which lasted me some 14 years and only then fell apart, not the zippers, not the snaps, not he fabric, but the ceramic layer just went into dust all over the place. It's been on me on many mountain trips. My old Raichle boots did well, and after Mammut took over, they still works okay. Because of that I got a helmet holder from Mammut, and it simply doesn't work - it's a bad design and executed badly, so now I make one myself. Not a hard job at all, but still goes to show that even big old companies can lower quality. In real life I've found each company makes a few products very well, and the rest is so so. Different products for different brands fortunately.
Anyway, we all have some experiences from real life and it would be good if someone from those companies actually listened to us, the customers, not advisors and what not. I guess it can be hard to maintain quality and mass fabrication at the same time. And please drop the china/far east fabrication. These words are not meant as a rant, but as a description of real life experiences. Have a safe great trip!

Lol, I’m a pro rock climber, and I’ve lived in Mexico my whole life, I visit the USA a couple of times a year, and this last time I went to a north face store looking for quality climbing products, but now it’s all form over function, they did have a couple quick draws and some dry ropes, but they left the ropes where the sun hit them hard (very bad, makes them brittle and u die) and then there’s a whole bunch of BS, new rope cut and hot glued to a post just for looks, the us and big corporate organizations have a mindset that everything is disposable, but in Mexico we cherish our products and things.

Panasonic used to be a brand name of Matsushita, besides Technics and National (and I guess more). They rebranded the whole of Matsushita as "Panasonic" in 2008. They make a lot of products for a plethora of companies. They're in aviation all the way to car parts. Just a lot of their stuff they make under license for other companies. Example, the Fender sound system in my car has the fender logos in the Soundsystem. But when I took the cover off it was all Panasonic.

I have a coat I bought in 2000 still as good as new so was worth the money still wear it.
the older stuff was good I recently bought a backpack and it lasted less than a year before falling apart all the fabric just wore out and turned to strings

I use a North Face backpack everyday. And I got it in 2007. 12 straight years of everyday use and this thing is still in great condition. Same for their winter coats, I feel like the quality is so high that for regular everyday use, the materials never seem to rip or break apart. I should probably get a new backpack at some point, but I love how long this one has lasted me and I'm sticking with it until it tears apart even if a smaller or other backpack may be more "Fashionable".
Their jackets and pullovers were unbelievably trendy about 5 years ago. They were high quality, but my God were they expensive. So I never bought one. Didn't realize they almost filed for bankruptcy.

A small note At the time of purchase of North Face by VF Corp, Vans was a spearate co. Vans was acquired by VF Corp after it acquired North Face, in 2004.

This is so disappointing I feel like where I live in Austin Texas it’s a pretty casual more expensive brand. 70% of kids at my university wear Northface backpacks. I just bought one. They’re very casual and practical, they fit everything and are perfect for walking around campus all day! They jackets are top of the line and love them when I wear work out clothes in the fall or winter! Guess I won’t wear any of my northface stuff when I go to the UK 🤕🤣

Me and my family have had the same jackets from them for well over 10 years. They deliver quality. My two mcmurdo jackets keep me warm with just a T shirt on. One I just bought, and one is nearly 10 years old. I love them.
North Face makes great cold weather clothing. I moved to the east coast last year and had my first extremely cold winter ever. I had a great North Face jacket to keep me warm on those negative temperature days. Plus they're really well made and work like they're supposed to.

@Mike Miller Yep. Something tells me they care much more about people seeing them in a Patagonia cap than they do about the buffalo often depicted on those hats.
As an avid outdoors person one thing to note about North Face is that they had a fall and rise within the technical outdoor community. A few years ago they started really pushing their apparel for the casual user and a lot of technical people stopped buying North Face cause it just wasn't good enough. They've turned around recently and have been releasing a lot of decent clothes and gear again. One thing that I think has really helped get them back into being for technical people is by sponsoring and collaborating some really awesome and extreme athletes.

Great video the only thing that I would add that many companies do not give valid credit to is what I call the urban/hip hop affect in the 90s Tommy H & Nautica apparel was a huge brand in the community after let’s say some questionable comments by the brands about their lack of enthusiasm for young people wearing their apparel many were looking for something new. With the heart of hip hop being in NY a colder state the NF winter coats took off. They were seen as high end like the previous brands I spoke of but with more of an edge due to their origins. Once the North Face blew up in these communities as we all know they then become main stream. It would be great if you did a video on the impact of hip hop culture on apparel.

7 years ago I bought theirs backpack - The Noth Face Vault. Man...I used it bakc in colleage, while regular shoping, hiking, kayaking, in the woods, mountains, while moving and the overall amount of stuff it helped me to carry is basicaly stunning. Did it tore up? Not a single seam. Yeah, I had to use additional DWR, to bring back water repellency, but other than that...Man, this thing is SOLID, and it is one of the cheapest of their's backpacks...And I'm still using it 😍😎

I’ve spent my entire life living in the NW, (Alaska, Washington, and Oregon) and the North Face is a very popular brand in those states. Columbia and Carhartt are also very popular brands too. These three brands are popular in two very different areas, the big cities and the small rural towns.

10:30 As a skier I own 3 winter coats. 1 is a thick, old Columbia ski coat, the second a sleek Dri-Tec North Face ski coat that's thinner by heat insualting, and one's a standard snow coat for the warmer days (also a North face)
“The north face” actually refers to the north face of half dome, not just any north face of any mountain
I am an avid hiker/backpacker. I have been to the top of half dome, not that hard compared to whitney. There were a lot of people getting to the top that day. As a result, it took awhile to get up and down the cables. I remember swinging around people who were too scared to move. We ended up going down the dome at nightfall and hiking back to the campground in the dark. We all had flashlights, so our biggest concern was making it back before their pizza place closed. My friends took a shorter route because they hiked faster. I took the horse trail back. Initially I was alone, but a lot of people did not have lights with them so I ended up with a bunch of other people following me single file back to the campground including one who really freaked out. Made it back in time for pizza. Practically all my stuff is Northface. There are some high quality timeless designs that they still produce. Patagonia used to have these kinds of products but quit producing them to I suppose widen their appeal.
Got a north face jacket once.
Wore it for 5 years and is very comfortable and warm.
My college backpack, all 4.5 years, was a wonderful magenta pink. I finally got rid of it when I had kids. Now they wear the jackets and The North Face has been part of my life for nearly 25 years 🏕

My NF 'adventure' jacket is 35+ years old (I'm way older then that). We're both completely wrecked now, but I'll never get rid of my buddy. I gave the guys at the shop a pretty good laugh a bunch of years ago when I had to take it in to have a repair done. I told them I wanted to put it into their zipper hospital and hoped they would be able to save him. They did. Excellent video. Thanks for the info.

The nearest one from me is almost an hour away , yet I manage to eat there at least once a week. It's soooooooooo damn delicious!!!!!!!! And the cleanliness and customer service is unparalleled!

My uncle used to work at a North Face retail store and so I have a lot of North Face gear. I always wore their quarter-zip fleece sweaters in the winter (I've diversified a bit now) and I have a prized windbreaker/ski shell jacket that I've been wearing since at least 2011. Last year the zipper broke and I sent it in to their warranty repairs office. It took a while but it did come back in the mail good as new. I love this jacket so much, and according to my uncle they don't make this product line anymore, so I'm glad I was able to get it repaired.

North face has 1 nice thing, a lifetime warranty on any damage or defective things, long as you don't take a box cutter and the zipper comes off they will fix it for free or a equal store credit for what the item was worth.
Used it 3 times now and twice they just traded it with something in store and 3rd time they sent it in and fixed it for free shipping it back to me, took a month+, but still free!!!! Kudos for them standing by there brand even though my north face rain coat was 5 years old they still replaced it with a new one off the shelf in store like the do. Happy to go back.
Lifetime warranty info is priceless.
I used a north face backpack between 6th grade through my last year of college. 10 years of being overly stuffed with way too many textbooks and the only damage is a bit of dirt. Durability is worth it!
Well the 1990 Mountain Jacket and The Original Recon Backpack is what had me buying their stuff but 2008 their stuff hasn’t been the same 👎🏽

Last season I picked up skiing. I live in Utah, and I’m within a half hour drive of four world class ski resorts. When I got decked out for ski gear, one of the things I picked up was a North Face thermal jacket. It quickly became something I wore regularly. If it’s slightly too nippy out for my hoodie, I wear my North Face thermal jacket. It’s something I think will last me for a good long time, like the Helix ski jacket that I’ve had for fifteen years.
The most interesting part of North Face has always been the knock off names. I’ve seen South Pole, east bank, north rise, and more
My dad took my siblings and me climbing all the time as kids, and a lot of our tents, jackets, etc. were from The North Face (though we just called it North Face). To me, it's a brand I associate with camping and great memories. I got my favorite North Face hoodie at a silent auction during a climbing competition we went to. None of us competed, but we watched some really cool climbs and got to meet amazing people.
I learned about the North Face back in 2007 when they started sponsoring mountain gears and jackets to news reporters of GMA7 (a TV network company here in the Philippines) when they were covering Rome Garduce's climb to Mount Everest, and was hailed as one of the first Filipino mountain climbers to reach its summit.
Since then, they continuously provide blue polo shirts to almost all news reporters of GMA7 bearing the North Face logo.
On a funny note, a specialty store here in the Philippines that specializes in producing t-shirts with parody versions of popular brands made a version of the North Face shirt that says "the Fuck Face". Hahaha!

I bought 2 North Face goose down sleeping bags in 1976. I still use them today.
I worked for an outdoor adventure store in college in the mid 2000s. Columbia and North Face were the low quality brands, but North Face priced itself as a competitor for Patagonia and the like. People, mainly sorority girls, bought it up. Genius -- well played huge conglomerate who bought North Face. Perception is reality. Actual reality is secondary.
I live in NYC, and you see a lot of fashion trends come and go through the seasons. Around 2009-2011, everyone was wearing North Face winter coats, real or counterfeit, and then came Canada Goose, and just last year it was Moncler.

As a Canadian, I always think of the Loblaws supermarket chain when I see the North Face logo.
When I think of the brand, I always think of that awesome North Face Edition Chevrolet Avalanche that was available in an exclusive shade of green. Somebody in my hometown had one, and I liked the color so much that I wanted to paint my Beetle in it.
