  • For more than a half-century, The North Face has competed in the space outfitting mountain climbers and skiers. But the outdoor recreation brand is now hoping to become a significant player in the $185 billion streetwear market. In the three months ending September 2021, The North Face had revenue of $883 million, 31% higher than a year earlier. And while interest in outdoor activities like camping has surged, climate change and consumer trends like sustainability have led to a range of challenges and opportunities for the brand.

    Patagonia is a great example that if you prioritize the environment while creating a great product, your competitors will become more environmentally friendly out of necessity to compete. Lead with a good model and others will follow.

      You honesty think they care about the environment? It’s all a marketing scheme. If making jackets out of boogers was possible they’d make the thickest jacket with boogers. This whole tree hugger thing is to just feel good about yourself while not actually changing anything in their life

    This story totally missed the fact TNF Founder Doug Thompkins and Patagonia Founder Yvon Chouinard were climbing buddies who climbed Cerro Fitzroy together in 1969. Both companies had the early heart of sustainability at genesis, but Thompkins decided his passions were best directed towards land preservation in Chile.
    This intriguing story thread may have proven too difficult to weave into the video.

      Tompkins was a tent designer and adventurer. His legacy was tents that used bendable poles outside the structure to replace the central pole. He was one of the first to sell tents with this design that worked well. In the 70s TNF improved this design with geodesic inspired domes. The legend goes that Buckminster Fuller himself was asked for his input on the first TNF dome tent design in the 70s.
      Tompkins sold out of TNF in the late 60s before they got into outdoor clothing and he's not responsible for any of the clothing innovations of TNF in the 70s. He then made his fortune in women's fashion with the global brand Esprit. He sold out of that over a few years after he divorced Susie in 89/90.
      Tompkins was a vocal critic of fast fashion from the 90s on and that criticism would have extended to the company he founded, which did more than anyone to sell consumers on style based outdoor gear that they replaced regularly.
      He remained great friends with Chouinard. It really is about time TNF addressed the environmental impact of their products but this move seems to more reflect consumer desires rather than the company itself. Ecological concern isn't baked into TNF like it is Patagonia. Perhaps if Tompkins had remained a shareholder that wouldn't be the case.

      The Tompkins foundation still exists in Chile and Argentina. They still do a great job. However, unlike Patagonia (the company) The North Face maintains no connection with those values anymore.

    The North Face brand has been destroyed in recent years (in the UK at least), it is now mostly a fashion brand for teenagers sold in JD Sports. Patagonia still tends to be only worn by those interested in the outdoors.

      North Face is profit driven since the original co founder Douglas Thompkins sold the company. He also happened to be best friends w Yvon Chouinard who founded Patagonia. While Yvon tried to tackle the clothing industry from the inside about environmental issues, Thompkins decided to sell all his shares of Esprit and use all his money to buy 10 million acres in Patagonia and donated it in order to preserves the area. North Face in the end is just trying to look like they care but in the end they are for profit company who just care about $$$

    The more time I spend outdoors, the more I realized I don’t need fancy technical gears. Maybe for a short period of time to break a record or very specific uses, those can give you an hedge, but the longer you stay out the more you tend to go back to roots (cotton, wool, wood, metal…).

      I'd take Patagonia 10 out of 9 times, but I don't plan to buy that many jackets or other large clothing items in my remaining lifetime. Having fewer options that are well designed is part of being a sustainable company. People shouldn't be incentivized to buy a new jacket. Ideally, people cannot tell if you are wearing a jacket from the 2022 collection or the 1990 collection because the products haven't changed. The only reason to change a design should be more sustainable materials and ways of production. People don't need five jackets. One or two are sufficient for 99.9 % of the population. So, there is no need to collaborate with Gucci and other ridiculous fashion brands in order to offer "cool" items for people who need to compensate their fragile, shallow personality by trying to buy a piece of a lifestyle that only exists as an imaginary image some advertisement created in their mind.

I remember first using it on a cold rainy day in a Bamboo forest in Kyoto. Patagonia relies on feeding stories to their minions while they actually harm the environment because their stories are not derived from valid science. North America is suffering from very large fires that have happened due to the meddling in forest management by naive but well meaning environmentalists.

    It seems like TNF's actual technical gear is always mysteriously on sale and generally pretty affordable. At least, that's how I ended up with ski bibs and shell from North Face. It's almost as if part of their strategy is for the fashion conscious to see people like me taking selfies from the tops of mountains while wearing their gear.

    • @caseydorn3309
      @caseydorn3309 2 роки тому +1

      Affordable in mountaineering is relative. As a mountaineer myself.... it ain't cheap. Time off work. Money for travel. Money for food. Money for the stuff that breaks or specifically is needed for this or that expedition that you don't own. Money for your gym membership. Time for all of those things (which is quite literally priceless). I meet lots of nice folks while climbing mountains. Most aren't poor though. So in sum, yeah, TNF gets street cred from your pics, but calling your gear affordable is relative. It's affordable relative to the obscene expenses that we all just accept for the sport, and that aren't actually that accessible. Take Denali for instance. After doing a few expeditions to prepare, and assuming you want to do it guided, you're looking at 10k+ cost of flights to PANC, the bush pilot to the remote land site, (etc). So at that point, what's a couple hundred for a single jacket?

    • @VoiceOverTrailReviews
      @VoiceOverTrailReviews 2 роки тому

      @@caseydorn3309 All good points. I figure that $100 for a pair of bibs and $150 for a shell is dirt cheap compared to what folks, including the high schoolers I teach, routinely drop on jeans with holes in them. I suspect TNF is (smartly) selling their fashion items for a higher markup than their technical gear. That said, I keep my mountaineering “affordable” by living in the Pacific Northwest and never climbing anything I can’t see from the city I live in. I also refuse to climb anything I can’t ski down and I’m sure as hell not going to climb anything I have to go through an airport to get to. If an ice axe is required, I’m out. If camping in the winter above tree line is involved, I’m also not interested. I get enough exercise to stay in shape by running and mountain biking. I figure less than 1 percent of the population ever sees the top of Mt. St. Helens and that’s enough exclusivity for me. I don’t need to be in the rarified .00001% who climb the truly epic peaks. I’m only there in the first place because I want to ski down. Once April rolls around I’m back on the mountain bike and the skis sit for another 7 months.

    At 1:20 there’s a pie chart on screen and next to it the words “85% of textiles produced each year, end up in landfills” the source is The North Face. What I want to know - is that 85% of all textiles in the world? Or is it 85% of textiles shipped to the US plus the textiles made here in the US? Or is it 85% of textiles produced here in the US but not any of the stuff being imported? Also I would like to know how they came up with that specific and high number. What methodology was used to produce that result, 85%. It seems to me that it would be really difficult to know with any kind of certainty how much of anything ends up in landfills. Starting with the admission that it is logistically impossible to contact every person in the US, and definitely not every person in the world lol. Next they, the north face, would have to be in contact with a seriously large number of people from each income bracket within our society as well as ensuring that an adequate representation of all racial groups was obtained. They would then have to rely on each person to accurately remember how many textile items if any that they purchased in a particular year that they threw in the trash. At that point North Face would have to create a big spreadsheet with each year going back say 10 years and then input the information from all those people into the correct year that A the item was produced and B in which year was the textile thrown in the trash. Only then could they even come close to being able to make such an outlandish claim as they did with that 85% number. Plus knowing when a textile was made and what year it ends up in the landfill isn’t enough information. It would be extremely important to know WHY a textile was sent to the landfill. Did it get worn out from use? Did it have a defect? Was it fine but the person just didn’t want it anymore? If so why didn’t they donate it to a charity?
    There are a lot of unanswered questions popping up

    Carhartt did there move into fashion the right way for there customers by keeping tough workwear separate from the over priced fashion pieces on Carhartt WIP brand.

      Exactly! I don’t want to hear about some foofy sweatshirt for dips in suburbs. I go to Farm and Fleet and get my tan union made in the USA heavy jacket. It’s just a jacket. That’s why I buy their fantastic jackets. They’re just jackets, warm, reasonably priced, extremely durable, labour responsible, domestically manufactured, jackets. For days off, and vacation, snowboarding, hiking, and such, I’m behind Patagonia.

    I have no idea why north face even collaborated with supreme or gucci in the first place. I feel like both of those brans bring down the style of north face i wonder how many people would agree with me?

    Re German Benno Dorer, CEO of VF Corporation (North Face’s senior holding company) AND, simultaneously, chairman of Clorox (the bleach company):
    “ What nationality is the name Benno?
    The name Benno is primarily a male name of Hebrew origin that means Son.” If you Google “Dorer”, it can be a Jewish surname.

    as the North Face moves further and further away from its roots, the less and less credibility it has as a supplier for serious outdoor equipment. While Patagonia stuff is functionally not much better, it has managed to retain the connection to folks who actually use equipment for serious stuff. It's sad to see NF move towards becoming nothing more than a generic clothing manufacturers. Of course, the market for the real stuff just isn't big enough for companies that are focused on just selling lots of anything. Very sad.

    I wore North Face exclusively for many years (since the very early 2000s). However, I have been quite disappointed by the quality of their products in the last few years or so. I feel like they've definitely gone downhill compared to what they once were in regard to the quality and longevity of their jackets. I have now switched over to Patagonia and am extremely happy. I recently bought the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L rain jacket and the Nano Puff winter jacket, and I've been very impressed by their performance and quality. When you live in New England like I do, you need a variety of jackets for all sorts of weather. I've bought some Patagonia T-shirts as well, which are super comfortable and have an amazing fit. I will absolutely be sticking to Patagonia from now on.
